A Pattern Based Approach To Web Design Formalization, Ahmet Sikici, Yasemi̇n Topaloğlu
A Pattern Based Approach To Web Design Formalization, Ahmet Sikici, Yasemi̇n Topaloğlu
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
World Wide Web is a global information network that affects many fields of our lives. The distributed, interlinked, visual and heterogeneous structure of the web makes it an irregular development environment. In this paper we propose a pattern based approach for increasing the effectiveness of development for the Web environment. This approach is based on the representation of the core meaning of each design as a set of patterns and requires the formulation of abstract solutions in a mathematical precision. This way not only reusable design experience will be codified unambiguously, but a smooth transition between the design and implementation …

An Agile Information Systems Development Method In Use, Mehmet Nafi̇z Aydin, Frank Harmsen, Kees Van Slooten, Robert Stegwee
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Recently, agile information systems development methods, agile methods in short, have got considerable attention from practitioners. One of the reasons seems that agile methods, to some degree, can be adaptable to different project situations. However, little empirical research has been conducted on this subject. The major goal of this research is to identify which aspects of agile methods are perceived as most critical and difficult to realize and how such aspects are adapted in practice. To reach this goal we studied the working practices concerning the adaptation of an agile method in the IT department of one of the leading …

A Robustness Analysis Of Game-Theoretic Cdma Power Control, Xingzhe Fan, Murat Arcak, John T. Wen
A Robustness Analysis Of Game-Theoretic Cdma Power Control, Xingzhe Fan, Murat Arcak, John T. Wen
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper studies robustness of a gradient-type CDMA uplink power control algorithm with respect to disturbances and time-delays. This problem is of practical importance because unmodeled secondary interference effects from neighboring cells play the role of disturbances, and propagation delays are ubiquitous in wireless data networks. We first show L_p-stability, for p \in [1,\infity], with respect to additive disturbances. We pursue L_{\infity}-stability within the input-to-state stability (ISS) framework of Sontag [7], which makes explicit the vanishing effect of the initial conditions. Next, using the ISS property and a loop transformation, we prove that global asymptotic stability is preserved for sufficiently …
Global Stability Analysis Of An End-To-End Congestion Control Scheme For General Topology Networks With Delay, Tansu Alpcan, Tamer Başar
Global Stability Analysis Of An End-To-End Congestion Control Scheme For General Topology Networks With Delay, Tansu Alpcan, Tamer Başar
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
We analyze the stability properties of an end-to-end congestion control scheme under fixed heterogeneous delays, and for general network topologies. The scheme analyzed is based on the congestion control game of [1], with the starting point being the unique Nash equilibrium of that game. We prove global stability of this solution (and hence of the congestion control algorithm) under a mild symmetricity condition. We further demonstrate the stability of the algorithm numerically for various delays, user numbers, and topologies
Flow Controller Design And Performance Analysis For Self-Similar Network Traffic, Peng Yan
Flow Controller Design And Performance Analysis For Self-Similar Network Traffic, Peng Yan
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Recent studies of high-resolution traffic measurement discovered the self-similarity in both LAN and WAN traffic. In this paper, we introduce a two-degree of freedom rate based flow controller, which includes a robust H^{\infity} control block and an LMMSE based capacity predictor. The former part can guarantee the robust stability against time-varying time delay uncertainties and the latter improves the transient response by predicting the self-similar cross-traffic. Implementation issues are discussed and performance analysis is provided to validate our design. We also investigate the prediction and control in larger time scale which is more applicable for the real network environment
Optimum And Suboptimum Blind Channel And Symbol Estimation For Siso Channels, T. Engi̇n Tuncer
Optimum And Suboptimum Blind Channel And Symbol Estimation For Siso Channels, T. Engi̇n Tuncer
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
We present three methods for blind channel and symbol identification from a single or multi-block observation. These methods are deterministic approaches suitable for the identification of quickly changing wireless channels. The first method uses the finite alphabet property and it has good performance even for noisy observations. It requires only a single data frame, which is a unique feature of the method. This method can also be used to identify the channel order. For multi-block observations, we present the maximal ratio combining cross relation (MRCCR) method. It is an optimum approach in terms of instantaneous SNR and is based on …

Giant Planar Hall Effect In Colossal Magnetoresistive La0.84Sr0.16Mno3 Thin Films, Y. Bason, L. Klein, J.-B. Yau, X. Hong, C. H. Ahn
Giant Planar Hall Effect In Colossal Magnetoresistive La0.84Sr0.16Mno3 Thin Films, Y. Bason, L. Klein, J.-B. Yau, X. Hong, C. H. Ahn
Xia Hong Publications
The transverse resistivity in thin films of La0.84Sr0.16MnO3 (LSMO) exhibits sharp field-symmetric jumps below TC . We show that a likely source of this behavior is the giant planar Hall effect combined with biaxial magnetic anisotropy. The effect is comparable in magnitude to that observed recently in the magnetic semiconductor Ga(Mn)As. It can be potentially used in applications such as magnetic sensors and nonvolatile memory devices.

Transport And Urban Environment In Developing Countries : The Situation Is Known, Pragmatic Policies And Understanding Of Related Elements Are Needed, Ali S. Huzayyin, Nermeen F. Ashour
Conference Papers
Environmental impacts of urban transport in developing countries are well known as indicated through many examples from Africa, Asia and Latin America. Policies and countermeasures are classified and listed as well as the numerous involved actors, variables and effects. A pragmatic approach is needed to ensure success and sustainability of the solutions. The paper discusses main barriers impeding applicability, success and sustainability of mitigation policies and countermeasures. It also outlines the complexity of handling and modelling such multivariate problem of policies, actors, variables and effects. A simplified approach is suggested, which can ensure applicability, implement-ability, success and sustainability of policies …

Red Imported Fire Ant Impacts On Wildlife: A Decade Of Research, C. R. Allen, D. M. Epperson, A. S. Garmestani
Red Imported Fire Ant Impacts On Wildlife: A Decade Of Research, C. R. Allen, D. M. Epperson, A. S. Garmestani
Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications
The negative impacts of biological invasion are economically and ecologically significant and, while incompletely quantified, they are clearly substantial. Ants (family Formicidae) are an important, although often overlooked, component of many terrestrial ecosystems. Six species of ants are especially striking in their global ability to invade, and their impacts. This paper focuses on the impacts of the most destructive of those species, the red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta), and focuses on impacts on native vertebrates. Red imported fire ants often become the dominant ant species in infested areas outside of their native range due to their aggressive …
Effect Of Catch-And-Release Angling On Growth Of Largemouth Bass, Micropterus Salmoides, K. L. Pope, G. R. Wilde
Effect Of Catch-And-Release Angling On Growth Of Largemouth Bass, Micropterus Salmoides, K. L. Pope, G. R. Wilde
Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications
Catch-and-release angling is popular in many parts of the world and plays an increasingly important role in management of recreational fisheries. Although the magnitude of catch-and-release mortality is well documented for many species, potential sublethal effects have been little studied. An experiment was conducted to assess directly the effects of catch-and-release angling on growth of largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides Lacépède. Angling mortality was 0.00 ± 0.092% for largemouth bass caught on plastic grubs. There was no difference (P = 0.57) in weight gain between caught and uncaught fish over a 40-day angling and recovery period. Although catch-and-release angling appears to …
Age-Specific Patterns In Density-Dependent Growth Of White Crappie, Pomoxis Annularis, K. L. Pope, G. R. Wilde, B. W. Durham
Age-Specific Patterns In Density-Dependent Growth Of White Crappie, Pomoxis Annularis, K. L. Pope, G. R. Wilde, B. W. Durham
Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications
The relationship between growth in white crappie, Pomoxis annularis Rafinesque, and climate, lake morphometry and population density was studied in 103 Texas reservoirs. Growth of age-0 through age-3 white crappie was significantly (P≤ 0.05) related to latitude, growing season and surface area. Growth of age-1 through age-5 white crappie also was related to annual precipitation. Multiple linear regression models with precipitation and mean catch per unit effort (CPUE) of white crappie as independent variables explained 14–22% of the variation in growth of age-0, -1 and -2 white crappie. By contrast, growth of age-3, -4 and -5 white crappie was unrelated …
Anglers’ Probabilities Of Catching Record-Size Fish, Gene R. Wilde, Kevin L. Pope
Anglers’ Probabilities Of Catching Record-Size Fish, Gene R. Wilde, Kevin L. Pope
Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications
Most state fishery management agencies publish lists of the largest (e.g., 10, 25, and 50) specimens of each species captured by anglers. We fitted normal
distributions for smallmouth bass Micropterus dolomieu and striped bass Morone saxatilis and a mixture of two normal distributions of largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides to the length of time that individual fish had been present on lists of the largest 50 specimens of each species caught by Texas anglers using rod and reel. In any given year, there is only a probability (p) of 0.102 that a largemouth bass large enough to make the recordweight list …
Relationship Between Lake-Record Weights Of Fishes And Reservoir Area And Growing Season, Gene R. Wilde, Kevin L. Pope
Relationship Between Lake-Record Weights Of Fishes And Reservoir Area And Growing Season, Gene R. Wilde, Kevin L. Pope
Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications
We used information from an angler recognition program to assess the relationship between lake-record weights of freshwater fishes captured by Texas anglers and two predictors of fish production and growth: reservoir surface area and growing-season length. The lake-record weights of two species, largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides and flathead catfish Pylodictis olivaris, were directly related to the logarithm of surface area. The record weights of all species studied were unrelated to growing-season length. Regardless of the statistical significance of individual correlations, there was a significant excess of positive correlations across all species between lake-record weights of fish and log surface area. …

Mammals Of Carlsbad Caverns National Park, New Mexico, Kenneth N. Geluso, Keith Geluso
Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)
Carlsbad Cavern was established as a national park on 14 May 1930, after being designated as a national monument for nearly seven years. The park is located in southeastern New Mexico, and today it encompasses 189.3 km2 (73.1 mi2). Eighty-eight percent of the park lies in the rugged Guadalupe Mountains, while 12% is located on relatively flat land along the base of the mountains. The park contains a variety of habitats ranging from desert scrub at the lowest elevations to coniferous woodlands on the highest summits. Five months after Carlsbad Cavern was declared a national monument, Vernon …

Abundance Of Blue And Humpback Whales In The Eastern North Pacific Estimated By Capture-Recapture And Line-Transect Methods, John Calambokidis, Jay Barlow
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
We estimated humpback and blue whale abundance from 1991 to 1997 off the west coast of the US. and Mexico comparing capture-recapture models based on photographically identified animals and line-transect methods from ship-based surveys. During photo-identification research we obtained 4,2 12 identifications of 824 humpback whales and 2,403 identifications of 908 blue whales primarily through non-systematic small-boat surveys along the coast of California, Oregon, and Washington. Line-transect surveys from NOAA ships in 1991, 1993, and 1996 covered approximately 39,000 km along the coast of Baja California, California, Oregon, and Washington out to 555 km from shore. The nearshore and clumped …
Visual Plumes Mixing Zone Modeling Software, Walter E. Frick
Visual Plumes Mixing Zone Modeling Software, Walter E. Frick
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
The US Environmental Protection Agency has a history of developing plume models and providing technical assistance. The Visual Plumes model (VP) is a recent addition to the public-domain models available on the EPA Center for Exposure Assessment Modeling (CEAM) web page. The Windows-based VP adapts, modifies, and enhances the earlier DOS-based PLUMES with a new interface, models, and capabilities. VP is a public platform for mixing zone models designed to encourage the continued improvement of plume theory and models by facilitating verification and inter-model comparison. Some examples are presented to illustrate VP’s new capabilities. One demonstrates its ability, for reasonably …

Bank Stabilization, Riparian Land Use And The Distribution Of Large Woody Debris In A Regulated Reach Of The Upper Missouri River, North Dakota, Usa, Ted R. Angrandi, E William Schweiger, David W. Bolgrien, Peter Ismert, Tony Selle
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
Large woody debris (LWD) is an important component of ecosystem structure and function in large floodplain rivers. We examined associations between LWD distribution and riparian land use, bank stabilization (e.g. riprap revetment), local channel geomorphology, and distance downriver from the dam in the Garrison Reach, a regulated reach of the upper Missouri River in North Dakota, USA. We conducted a survey of shoreline-associated LWD in the reach during typical summer flow conditions. Reachwide LWDdensity was 21.3 pieces km^-1 of shoreline, of which most pieces (39%) were ‘beached’ between the waterline and the bank full level, 31% of pieces had evidence …
