Beginning A Book Swap Room: A Quantitative And Qualitative Study, Mari Lynn Stangland Jan 2004

Beginning A Book Swap Room: A Quantitative And Qualitative Study, Mari Lynn Stangland

All Graduate Projects

Many children do not have adequate access to print. To rectify this in her school, the author created an ongoing Book Swap Room. The author documented the reading growth of students by looking at their reading test data in conjunction with records of the number of books traded in the Room. A family survey was used on three occasions to determine book ownership in the home of students, and a student survey was used to determine whether the Book Swap Room was achieving its desired goal of reinforcing book ownership. Though results were mixed and inconclusive, the author has seen …

Service-Learning In Engineering: A Resource Guidebook, William Oakes Jan 2004

Service-Learning In Engineering: A Resource Guidebook, William Oakes

Higher Education

Several issues have motivated reform in engineering education over the past decade. Industry’s call for more well-rounded graduates who are better equipped for today’s fast-moving, global economy has motivated the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) to redefine its accreditation criteria in a way that places professional skills such as teamwork, communication, and awareness of social issues into core engineering curricula. The continued underrepresentation of women and minorities in engineering has fueled innovative curricular models that integrate active learning with relevant engineering applications. At the same time, the overall decline in interest in engineering among high school students has …

The Application Of Finance Theory To Increased Risk Harms In Toxic Tort Litigation, Robert J. Rhee Jan 2004

The Application Of Finance Theory To Increased Risk Harms In Toxic Tort Litigation, Robert J. Rhee

UF Law Faculty Publications

In toxic tort litigation, a plaintiff has no cause of action for increased risk of harm unless that risk is proven by a preponderance of the evidence to lead to a future physical injury. This rule of law is based on an antiquated concept of uncertainty, and evinces the law's detachment from the knowledge gained from other intellectual disciplines and the everyday workings of the world. This article argues that freedom from increased risk should be a legally cognizable interest, the violation of which gives rise to an independent cause of action. When analyzed under finance theory, increased risk harms …

Boll Weevil (Anthonomus Grandis Boheman) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Dispersal In The Southern United States: Evidence From Mitochondrial Dna Variation, Kyung Seok Kim, Thomas W. Sappington

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

An understanding of boll weevil (Anthonomus grandis Boheman) dispersal behavior is essential to characterizing and responding to the threat of migration into eradication zones. Genetic variation in boll weevil mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was sampled and analyzed to make inferences on the magnitude and geographic pattern of genetic differentiation among weevil populations from 20 locations across eight U.S. states and northeast Mexico. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) analysis was conducted on a 12.4-kb amplicon of mtDNA from each of 419 individuals.A total of 28 distinct mtDNA haplotypes, 17 of which were unique to single locations, were identified …

The Activity Of Silicon Carbide Particles In Al-Based Metal Matrix Composites Revealed By Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy, David O. Wipf, L. Díaz-Ballote, L. Veleva, M. A. Pech-Canul, M. I. Pech-Canul Jan 2004

The Activity Of Silicon Carbide Particles In Al-Based Metal Matrix Composites Revealed By Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy, David O. Wipf, L. Díaz-Ballote, L. Veleva, M. A. Pech-Canul, M. I. Pech-Canul

CAS Publications

Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) is used to image variations in electrochemical activity over the surface of an aluminum-based metal matrix composite (MMC) in contact with buffered or unbuffered neutral solutions. The composite consists of an Al - 13.5% Si - 9% Mg alloy matrix and reinforcing silicon carbide particles (SiCp). Feedback mode SECM imaging using ferrocenemethanol as a redox mediator in 0.1 M NaCl solution and in buffer solution (pH 6.8) revealed that the SiC particles are electrochemically active. The data suggest that the electronic conductivity at these sites is higher than that of the Al2O …

William Stanley Hoole: Scholar-Librarian, John Jackson Jan 2004

William Stanley Hoole: Scholar-Librarian, John Jackson

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

When librarian William Stanley Hoole retired from the University of Alabama in 1973, he left a legacy of achievement worthy of consideration among librarianship's most capable pioneers. In twenty-nine years at the institution, Hoole improved the university's library service and holdings and won intellectual acclaim for the school through his numerous publications covering a wide range of topics. He addressed an organizational problem within the archival collection that resulted in the creation of a separate wing boasting his name today, the William Stanley Hoole Special Collections Library (WSHSCL). Capitalizing on the freedom of retirement, he moved from one stage of …

Piercing Gaze: Public Art In Schools, Laura Felleman Fattal Jan 2004

Piercing Gaze: Public Art In Schools, Laura Felleman Fattal

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

A gaze is a silent facial gesture while a piercing gaze suggests a shrieking sound. Unpacking the word, silence, allows one to look at the difference between the verbalizations hailing empowerment and the actual functioning of reinstatements of purpose in learning, teaching and mentoring in a public school. Silence, in the following article, signals a discomfort, sometimes solitude and, at times, an abyss perhaps indicating the disparity between expectation and implementation. The depth of research necessary by the school community to reach consensus for names of dignitaries and the in-depth archival photographic research on the part of the professional artists …

Rocket Plume Particulate Characterization By Multiple Wavelength Opacity And Mie Scattering, Andrew P. Chouinard Jan 2004

Rocket Plume Particulate Characterization By Multiple Wavelength Opacity And Mie Scattering, Andrew P. Chouinard

Theses and Dissertations

In the presented work, experiments were conducted to assess the utility of plume opacity monitoring for hybrid rocket diagnostics. The first phase of the work involved measuring plume opacity at a single wavelength and then at two wavelengths simultaneously. Results showed excellent correlation between plume opacity and rocket motor firing cycle and correlation between plume opacity and oxidizer flow rate, thereby validating the utility of the technique. Additionally, a spectral dependence of plume opacity was demonstrated that indicated the possible presence of transparent particulates in the plume. Further phase 1 experiments investigated the performance requirements of a laser-based instrument to …

Attitudinal Changes That Occur As A Result Of High School Transition Classes, K. K. Bradshaw Jan 2004

Attitudinal Changes That Occur As A Result Of High School Transition Classes, K. K. Bradshaw

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if high school transition classes alter student attitudes toward school, their peers, teachers/administrators or level of parental involvement. A large suburban high school class was administered a Likert Scale pre and posttest at the beginning of the course and at its conclusion. In addition to the pretest/posttest survey, students were grouped into six categories depending on their entering high school grade point averages. This delineation sought to ascertain if academic achievement either exacerbated or enhanced student perceptual indices on the survey. The data analyzed used an ANCOVA technique. Students were divided into …
