Predictability Of Lagrangian Particle Trajectories: Effects Of Smoothing Of The Underlying Eulerian Flow, Annalisa Griffa, Leonid I. Piterbarg, Tamay Özgökmen Jan 2004

Predictability Of Lagrangian Particle Trajectories: Effects Of Smoothing Of The Underlying Eulerian Flow, Annalisa Griffa, Leonid I. Piterbarg, Tamay Özgökmen

Journal of Marine Research

The increasing realism of ocean circulation models is leading to an increasing use of Eulerian models as a basis to compute transport properties and to predict the fate of Lagrangian quantities. There exists, however, a significant gap between the spatial scales of model resolution and that of forces acting on Lagrangian particles. These scales may contain high vorticity coherent structures that are not resolved due to computational issues and/or missing dynamics and are typically suppressed by smoothing operators. In this study, the impact of smoothing of the Eulerian fields on the predictability of Lagrangian particles is first investigated by conducting …

Invertebrate Larval Availability During Summer Upwelling And Downwelling On The Inner Continental Shelf Off New Jersey, Hongguang Ma, Judith P. Grassle

Journal of Marine Research

This study examined the effects of wind-driven, cross-shelf circulation on invertebrate larval supply to benthic habitats on the inner continental shelf off Tuckerton, New Jersey, USA. Study sites were located along an inshore/offshore transect in the LEO-15 research area at Beach Haven Ridge, a 12–20 m deep, shore-oblique sand ridge. Meroplankton was sampled using Moored, Automated, Serial Zooplankton Pumps which were programmed to take 250-l samples, ~1 m above the bottom, every 4 h. Upwelling and downwelling conditions were characterized using wind data from the nearby meteorological tower at the Rutgers University Marine Field Station, and bottom temperatures from LEO-15 …

Age Differences In Central (Semantic) And Peripheral Processing: The Importance Of Considering Both Response Times And Errors, Philip A. Allen, Martin D. Murphy, Miron Kaufman, Karen E. Groth, Ana Begovic Jan 2004

Age Differences In Central (Semantic) And Peripheral Processing: The Importance Of Considering Both Response Times And Errors, Philip A. Allen, Martin D. Murphy, Miron Kaufman, Karen E. Groth, Ana Begovic

Physics Faculty Publications

In this project we examined the effect of adult age on visual word recognition by using combined reaction time (RT) and accuracy methods based on the Hick–Hyman law. This was necessary because separate Brinley analyses of RT and errors resulted in contradicting results. We report the results of a lexical decision task experiment (with 96 younger adults and 97 older adults). We transformed the error data into entropy and then predicted RT by using entropy values separately for exposure duration (thought to influence peripheral processes) and word frequency (thought to influence central processes). For exposure duration, the entropy–RT functions indicate …

Variable-Temperature Scanning Optical And Force Microscope, Petru S. Fodor, H. Zhu, N. G. Patil, J. Levy

Physics Faculty Publications

The implementation of a scanning microscope capable of working in confocal, atomic force and apertureless near field configurations is presented. The microscope is designed to operate in the temperature range 4–300 K, using conventional helium flow cryostats. In atomic force microscope(AFM) mode, the distance between the sample and an etchedtungsten tip is controlled by a self-sensing piezoelectrictuning fork. The vertical position of both the AFM head and microscope objective can be accurately controlled using piezoelectric coarse approach motors. The scanning is performed using a compact XYZ stage, while the AFM and optical head are kept fixed, allowing scanning probe and …

Solids Whose Parallel Cross-Sections Are Regular Polygons, Matthew Coppenbarger

Articles

Given a solid in R3 whose base is contained in the xy-plane and parallel cross-sections perpendicular to the xy-plane are regular polygons, the volume and surface area are determined. Additionally, the asymptotic behavior of the solid as the number of sides of the cross-sectional polygon increases is analyzed (Refer to PDF file for exact formulas).

Development Of An Analytical Method For Distinguishing Ammonium Bicarbonate From The Products Of An Aqueous Ammonia Co2 Scrubber And The Characterization Of Ammonium Bicarbonate, Lingyu Meng Jan 2004

Development Of An Analytical Method For Distinguishing Ammonium Bicarbonate From The Products Of An Aqueous Ammonia Co2 Scrubber And The Characterization Of Ammonium Bicarbonate, Lingyu Meng

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The link between anthropogenic emissions of CO2 with increased atmospheric CO2 levels and, in turn, with increased global temperature has been well established and accepted. Using aqueous ammonia to capture CO2 and produce an inexpensive nitrogen fertilizer, ammonium bicarbonate (ABC) has been thought as a feasible approach to CO2 sequestration.

Due to the different concentrations of reactants and reaction conditions, different carbon-ammonium composites can be produced. In view of achieving a maximum of NH3 utilization in the capture of CO2, the product of ABC will be ideal. Hence the ABC in the products needs to be identified. Various analytical techniques …

Biozonation On Deep-Water Carbonate Mounds And Associated Hardgrounds Along The Western Margin Of Little Bahama Bank, With Notes On The Caicos Platform Island Slope, Charles G. Messing Jan 2004

Biozonation On Deep-Water Carbonate Mounds And Associated Hardgrounds Along The Western Margin Of Little Bahama Bank, With Notes On The Caicos Platform Island Slope, Charles G. Messing

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

Carbonate mounds found in a broad band from about 325 to 700 m along the western margin of Little Bahama Bank exhibit consistent faunal zonations characterized by assemblages of attached, suspension-feeding macroinvertebrates dominated by sponges, octocorals, crinoids and stylasterid and scleractinian corals. Biozonation on hard substrates appears chiefly dependent on depth (and associated parameters, e.g., temperature) and current flow. Mounds in 325-435 m with up to 30 m vertical relief reveal dense assemblages on gentler up current slopes and flanks, and an almost complete lack of macrofauna on steep downcurrent slopes. Macrofauna include stalked crinoids on upcurrent slopes and crest, …

Spatial And Temporal Recruitment Patterns Of Juvenile Grunts (Haemulon Spp.) In South Florida, L. K. B. Jordan, David S. Gilliam, Robin L. Sherman, Paul T. Arena, Fleur M. Harttung, Robert M. Baron, Richard E. Spieler Jan 2004

Spatial And Temporal Recruitment Patterns Of Juvenile Grunts (Haemulon Spp.) In South Florida, L. K. B. Jordan, David S. Gilliam, Robin L. Sherman, Paul T. Arena, Fleur M. Harttung, Robert M. Baron, Richard E. Spieler

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

Grunts (Haemulidae) are important fisheries species and represent a major component of reef fish communities in the Greater Caribbean region. To date, little is known about their recruitment pattems. Data from more than 2,000 visual fish counts from multiple natural and artificial reef studies in Broward County, Florida, over a seven-year period, were examined to identify both spatial and temporal trends in recruitment of juvenile (i.e., < 5cm TL) grunts of the genus Haemulon. In general, data from these studies indicate that juvenile Haemulon spp. recruitment increases in the spring and peaks in the early summer months (i.e., June and July). Data from natural reef surveys revealed a predominantly nearshore preference for recruitment in water depths less than 8 m. However, on artificial reefs, recruitment commoniy occurred at 20 m depths. The biotic and abiotic factors determining the settlement of grunts are not clear and will be examined in future studies.

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

The inshore environment of Broward County, Florida consists of three reef tracts, each separated by sand substrate, running parallel to the coastline in sequentially deeper water. A wide variety of artificial reef designs have been deployed in Broward County, many lying in sand flats between the reeftracts. From 1995 through 2002, over 1,100 visual fish censuses (predominantly point-counts) were completed on the three natural reeftracts in water depths from 3 m to 30 m and over 1,100 censuses were done on artificial reefs at depths of 7 m to 23 m. Curiously, the juvenile stages of two deeper-water species of …

Ice Dynamics Preceding Catastrophic Disintegration Of The Floating Part Of Jakobshavn Isbræ, Greenland, Jesse V. Johnson, Paul R. Prescott, Terence J. Hughes Jan 2004

Ice Dynamics Preceding Catastrophic Disintegration Of The Floating Part Of Jakobshavn Isbræ, Greenland, Jesse V. Johnson, Paul R. Prescott, Terence J. Hughes

Computer Science Faculty Publications

The floating terminal of Jakobshavn Isbræ, the fastest Greenland ice stream, has disintegrated since 2002, resulting in a doubling of ice velocity and rapidly lowering inland ice elevations. Conditions prior to disintegration were modeled using control theory in a plane-stress solution, and the Missoula model of ice-shelf flow. Both approaches pointed to a mechanism that inhibits ice flow and that is not captured by either approach. Jamming of flow, an inherent property of granular materials passing through a constriction (Jakobshavn Isfjord), is postulated as the mechanism. Rapid disintegration of heavily crevassed floating ice accompanies break-up of the ice jam.

Efficient Linkage Discovery By Limited Probing, Robert B. Heckendorn, Alden H. Wright Jan 2004

Efficient Linkage Discovery By Limited Probing, Robert B. Heckendorn, Alden H. Wright

Computer Science Faculty Publications

This paper addresses the problem of discovering the structure of a fitness function from binary strings to the reals under the assumption of bounded epistasis. Two loci (string positions) are epistatically linked if the effect of changing the allele (value) at one locus depends on the allele at the other locus. Similarly, a group of loci are epistatically linked if the effect of changing the allele at one locus depends on the alleles at all other loci of the group. Under the assumption that the size of such groups of loci are bounded, and assuming that the function is given …

Detailed Spatially Distributed Geothermal Heat-Flow Data For Modeling Of Basal Temperatures And Meltwater Production Beneath The Fennoscandian Ice Sheet, Jens-Ove Näslund, Peter Jansson, James L. Fastook, Jesse Johnson, Leif Andersson Jan 2004

Detailed Spatially Distributed Geothermal Heat-Flow Data For Modeling Of Basal Temperatures And Meltwater Production Beneath The Fennoscandian Ice Sheet, Jens-Ove Näslund, Peter Jansson, James L. Fastook, Jesse Johnson, Leif Andersson

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Accurate modeling of ice sheets requires proper information on boundary conditions, including the geothermal heat flow (or heat-flow density (HFD)). Traditionally, one uniform HFD value is adopted for the entire modeled domain. We have calculated a distributed, high-resolution HFD dataset for an approximate core area (Sweden and Finland) of the Scandinavian ice sheet, and imbedded this within lower-resolution data published for surrounding regions. Within the Last Glacial Maximum ice margin, HFD varies with a factor of as much as 2.8 (HFD values ranging between 30 and 83mWm–2), with an average of 49mWm–2. This average value is 17% higher than 42mWm–2, …

Seeding The Universe With Life: Securing Our Cosmological Future, Michael Noah Mautner Jan 2004

Seeding The Universe With Life: Securing Our Cosmological Future, Michael Noah Mautner

Chemistry Publications

Life is unique in Nature, and for us, it is precious. Life is unique in its complex patterns, and in its purposeful self-continuation. We belong to life and share its drive for self-propagation. Belonging to life then implies a human purpose to secure, expand and propagate our family of gene/protein life.

This purpose is best achieved in space, where life has an immense future. We can start now to secure this future, by seeding with life new solar systems. New species can develop there into intelligent beings who will further expand life in the galaxy. Filling the universe with life …

The Foggy Road For Evaluating Punitive Damages: Lifting The Haze From The Bmw/State Farm Guideposts, Steven L. Chanenson, John Y. Gotanda

Working Paper Series

In light of increasing punitive damages awards, the United States Supreme Court formulated criteria for evaluating whether a punitive damages award is so unreasonably large that it violates substantive due process. Unfortunately, these "guideposts," which were first erected in BMW v. Gore and applied last term in State Farm v. Campbell, are difficult to use and have resulted in inconsistent decisions. Indeed, Justice Scalia stated that they "mark a road to nowhere." The authors argue that the problems with the guideposts can be fixed by refining the third guidepost, which compares the punitive damages award to the criminal (or civil) …
