Ancient Mesopotamian Accounting And Human Cognitive Evolution, Tom Mouck Jan 2004

Ancient Mesopotamian Accounting And Human Cognitive Evolution, Tom Mouck

Accounting Historians Journal

Recent archaeological evidence supports the claim that the first system of writing and the first use of abstract numerical representation evolved from the clay token accounting system of ancient Mesopotamia. Writing and other abstract symbol systems have subsequently transformed human cognitive capacities within only few millennia, a time period too short for any substantial changes in our biologically-evolved brains. This paper uses Merlin Donald's theory of human cognitive and cultural evolution [in Origins of the Modern Mind; 1991] to identify the role played by ancient accounting in these evolutionary processes. Specifically, it is argued that this early accounting system paved …

Writing Accounting And Management History. Insights From Unorthodox Music Historiography, Luca Zan Jan 2004

Writing Accounting And Management History. Insights From Unorthodox Music Historiography, Luca Zan

Accounting Historians Journal

Few disciplines are probably more different than music and accounting. Nonetheless possible suggestions about historiography in accounting and management can be drawn from an innovative textbook on the history of music [Favaro and Pestalozza, 1999]. This is a rather unusual music history textbook. It has several distinguishing features which raise issues about: histories of the present, history and theory making, a non-linear sense of history, a social history of music, a pluralist view of genres, and a multi-geographical emphasis. These features have interesting parallels with accounting history and historiography.

Accounting Systems And Recording Procedures In The Early Islamic State, Omar Abdullah Zaid Jan 2004

Accounting Systems And Recording Procedures In The Early Islamic State, Omar Abdullah Zaid

Accounting Historians Journal

Despite advances in historical knowledge the precise origins of accounting systems and recording procedures remain uncertain. Recently discovered writings suggest that accounting has played a very important role in various sections of Muslim society since 624 A.D. This paper argues that the accounting systems and recording procedures practiced in Muslim society commenced before the invention of the Arabic numerals in response to religious requirements, especially zakat, a mandatory religious levy imposed on Muslims in the year 2 H.

Empirical Measurement Of Parasite Transmission Between Groups In A Colonial Bird, Charles R. Brown, Mary Bomberger Brown Jan 2004

Empirical Measurement Of Parasite Transmission Between Groups In A Colonial Bird, Charles R. Brown, Mary Bomberger Brown

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

While epidemiological models have suggested that the spread of parasites
and infectious diseases often depends critically on the extent of movement by infected
individuals between populations, there is little empirical information for any organism on
the frequency of between-group parasite transmission or how it varies spatially. The transmission
of parasites between discrete social groups or populations may also help determine
a host’s total parasite or pathogen exposure. We measured the introduction of parasitic bugs
(Oeciacus vicarius) into colonies of Cliff Swallows (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) by transient
birds from outside each group. The transmission of bugs increased strongly …

Age And Sex-Specific Rates Of Leaf Regeneration In The Mojave Desert Moss Syntrichia Caninervis, Lloyd Stark, L. Nichols, Nicholas N. Mcletchie, S. D. Smith, C. Zundel Jan 2004

Age And Sex-Specific Rates Of Leaf Regeneration In The Mojave Desert Moss Syntrichia Caninervis, Lloyd Stark, L. Nichols, Nicholas N. Mcletchie, S. D. Smith, C. Zundel

Life Sciences Faculty Research

The extremely skewed female-biased sex ratio in the desert moss Syntrichia caninervis was investigated by assessing the regeneration capacity of detached leaves. Juvenile, green, yellow-green, and brown leaves equating to approximately 0, 2, 6, and 12 yr of age, respectively, were detached from individuals of S. caninervis collected from 10 field populations and grown in a growth chamber for 58 d at a light intensity of 33–128 µmol · m–2 · s–1. Younger leaves (0–2 yr old) tended to have a greater viability, regenerate more quickly, extend their protonemal filaments farther, produce shoots (gametophores) more quickly, produce more shoots, and …

Distributions Of Z-Dna And Nuclear Factor I In Human Chromosome 22: A Model For Coupled Transcriptional Regulation, P. Christoph Champ, Sandor Maurice, Jeff Vargason, Tracy Camp, P. Shing Ho Jan 2004

Distributions Of Z-Dna And Nuclear Factor I In Human Chromosome 22: A Model For Coupled Transcriptional Regulation, P. Christoph Champ, Sandor Maurice, Jeff Vargason, Tracy Camp, P. Shing Ho

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

An analysis of the human chromosome 22 genomic sequence shows that both Z-DNA forming regions (ZDRs) and promoter sites for nuclear factor-I (NFI) are correlated with the locations of known and predicted genes across the chromosome and accumulate around the transcriptional start sites of the known genes. Thus, the occurrence of Z-DNA across human genomic sequences mirrors that of a known eukaryotic transcription factor. In addition, 43 of the 383 fully annotated chromosomal genes have ZDRs within 2 nucleosomes upstream of strong NFIs. This suggests a distinct class of human genes that may potentially be transcriptionally regulated by a mechanism …

Macmahon's Master Theorem And Infinite Dimensional Matrix Inversion, Vivian Lola Wong Jan 2004

Macmahon's Master Theorem And Infinite Dimensional Matrix Inversion, Vivian Lola Wong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

MacMahon's Master Theorem is an important result in the theory of algebraic combinatorics. It gives a precise connection between coefficients of certain power series defined by linear relations. We give a complete proof of MacMahon's Master Theorem based on MacMahon's original 1960 proof. We also study a specific infinite dimensional matrix inverse due to C. Krattenthaler.

The Removal Of Motion Artifacts From Non-Invasive Blood Pressure Measurements, Paresh Thakkar Jan 2004

The Removal Of Motion Artifacts From Non-Invasive Blood Pressure Measurements, Paresh Thakkar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Modern Automatic Blood Pressure Measurement Techniques are based on measuring the cuff pressure and on sensing the pulsatile amplitude variations. These measurements are very sensitive to motion of the patient or the surroundings where the patient is. The slightest unexpected movements could offset the readings of the automatic Blood Pressure meter by a large amount or render the readings totally meaningless. Every effort must be taken to avoid subjecting the body of the patient or the patient's surroundings to motion for obtaining a reliable reading. But there are situations in which we need Blood Pressure Measurements with the patient or …

Light & Dark: The Hidden Wonders Of Buck Creek, Lee J. Florea Jan 2004

Light & Dark: The Hidden Wonders Of Buck Creek, Lee J. Florea

Earth, Environmental, and Atmospheric Sciences Faculty Publications

As early morning mists rise from the banks of its supple waters, beams of light penetrate the Buck Creek valley illuminating its beauty. While light illuminates most of the land, there are secret places, nestled within the forest where darkness reigns supreme. Places beyond the touch of the sun, beyond the influence of seasons. Here time is measured not in cycles of light but by the flow of water and fall of rock. These are the caves, conduits for water past and present. Nestled in the hills of south-central Kentucky the caves along Buck Creek provide the lifeblood for a …

Hydrochemical Variations During Flood Pulses In The South-West China Peak Cluster Karst: Impacts Of Caco3–H2o–Co2 Interactions, Chris Groves, Zaihua Liu, Daoxian Yuan, Joe Meiman, Guanghui Jiang, Shiyi He, Qiang Li

Earth, Environmental, and Atmospheric Sciences Faculty Publications

High-resolution measurements of rainfall, water level, pH, conductivity, temperature and carbonate chemistry parameters of groundwater at two adjacent locations within the peak cluster karst of the Guilin Karst Experimental Site in Guangxi Province, China, were made with different types of multiparameter sonde. The data were stored using data loggers recording with 2 min or 15 min resolution. Waters from a large, perennial spring represent the exit for the aquifer's conduit flow, and a nearby well measures water in the conduit-adjacent, fractured media. During flood pulses, the pH of the conduit flow water rises as the conductivity falls. In contrast, and …

Development Of A Gene Transfer System In Clostridium Scindens Vpi 12708, Rashmi Ramasubbaiah Jan 2004

Development Of A Gene Transfer System In Clostridium Scindens Vpi 12708, Rashmi Ramasubbaiah

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Clostridium scindens VPI 12708 (previously known as Eubacterium sp. VPI 12708) is a bile-acid dehydroxylating bacterium originally isolated from the feces of a colon cancer patient. Many genes required for bile acid 7-a dehydroxylation are found on a large bile acid inducible operon (bai) that has been extensively studied. However the bai promoter, which directs expression of the bai operon, has yet to be characterized due, in part, to a lack of a functional genetic transfer system for this strain. A spontaneous rifampinresistant Clostridium scindens VPI 12708 mutant was used as a recipient to determine the efficacy of conjugation as …

A Genetic Algorithm Assisted Hybrid Approach To Web Information Integration, Jia-Lang Seng, Ming-Hsiung Ying Jan 2004

A Genetic Algorithm Assisted Hybrid Approach To Web Information Integration, Jia-Lang Seng, Ming-Hsiung Ying

Journal of International Information Management

Heterogeneity and interoperability of Web data sources represent the current key issue in Web information extraction and integration. Warehouse approach and virtual approach are the common approaches adopted to integrate heterogeneous Web data sources. However, few analytic model and cost model were developed to measure and assess the efficiency and effectiveness of either approach or a combination. Hence, a contingency model cannot be produced to assist the search engine to select and mix the warehouse method and the virtual method. In this study, we present a genetic algorithm assisted hybrid approach to aid the search engine to evaluate the cost …

Xml: Gateway For Data Mobility And Universal Connectivity, Emmanuel Uzoma Opara

Journal of International Information Management

Extensible Markup Language (XML) started as an effort to simplify Generalized Markup Language (SGML), which was the International Organization for Standardization's (ISO) standard for defining data vocabularies. This study investigates XML technology as a substitute to SGML that would be Web friendly, and easy to learn and use while supporting a variety of applications for faster and more efficient data mobility on the Web. It describes several compelling reasons why XML is a useful technology for representing structured data mobility. XML is a markup language used for data structure in a textual form. A specific goal of XML is to …
