Newton, Maclaurin, And The Authority Of Mathematics, Judith V. Grabiner Dec 2004

Newton, Maclaurin, And The Authority Of Mathematics, Judith V. Grabiner

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

Sir Isaac Newton revolutionized physics and astronomy in his Principia. How did he do it? Would his method work on any area of inquiry, not only in science, but also about society and religion? We look at how some Newtonians, most notably Colin Maclaurin, combined sophisticated mathematical modeling and empirical data in what has come to be called the "Newtonian Style." We argue that this style was responsible not only for Maclaurin’s scientific success but for his ability to solve problems ranging from taxation to insurance to theology. We show how Maclaurin’s work strengthened the prestige of Newtonianism and …

Rayleigh-Lidar Observations Of Mesospheric Mid-Latitude Density Climatology Above Utah State University, Eric M. Lundell, Vincent B. Wickwar Dec 2004

Rayleigh-Lidar Observations Of Mesospheric Mid-Latitude Density Climatology Above Utah State University, Eric M. Lundell, Vincent B. Wickwar

Posters

Data from Rayleigh lidars have been used extensively to derive temperatures in the mesospheric region of the atmosphere. However, these data have not been used extensively in a similar way to derive neutral densities. We report on one such mid-latitude, density climatology between 45 and ~90 km, based on nearly 600 good nights of observations carried out since 1993 at the Atmospheric Lidar Observatory (ALO) at Utah State University (41.7°N 111.8°W). They produce relative density profiles that are then normalized at 45 km to an empirical model, in this case the MSISe00 model. Despite this normalization, significant differences are found …

Engaging Indigenous Students At School: An Evaluation Of The Deadly Vibe Magazine, Nola Purdie, Louise Ellis, Alison Stone

Indigenous Education Research

Closing the divide between Indigenous and non-Indigenous students is one of the most pressing current educational imperatives. A multifaceted approach is needed to achieve this, given the diversity of educational disadvantage experienced by Indigenous students, and the contexts within which they obtain their education. One innovative approach to overcoming the disparity between Indigenous and non- Indigenous educational outcomes is that developed by Vibe Australia through its publication of the magazine Deadly Vibe. Deadly Vibe is a magazine for Indigenous students that aims to enhance their academic and social outcomes of schooling, including literacy and numeracy learning, self-esteem and self-concept, regular …

Techniques For Restoring Gorgonians To Coral Reef Injury Areas, Lauren F. Shuman, David S. Gilliam, Richard E. Dodge, B. D. Ettinger, Daniel P. Fahy, Elizabeth Glynn Fahy, Shaun M. Gill, Jamie A. Monty, Brian K. Walker

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

Great attention and energy has been spent investigating reattachment techniques for dislodged and fragmented scleractinian corals; however there has been a lack of controlled experimentation on how to restore dislodged gorgonians following a disturbance event, such as a ship grounding. Unfortunately, reef damage events occur frequently off southeast Florida. As an example, since 1998 at least five freighters have grounded on the reefs near Ft. Lauderdale, Broward County. These freighters dislodged many scleractinian and gorgonian corals and often destroyed thousands of square feet of reef habitat. After these events, restoration efforts concentrated on stabilizing loose debris and rubble, and reattaching …

Discovery Of Co Gas In The Inner Disk Of Tw Hydrae, Terrence W. Rettig, Joe Haywood, Theodore Simon, Sean D. Brittain, Erika Gibb Dec 2004

Discovery Of Co Gas In The Inner Disk Of Tw Hydrae, Terrence W. Rettig, Joe Haywood, Theodore Simon, Sean D. Brittain, Erika Gibb

Publications

We report the detection of rovibrationally excited CO emission from the inner disk of the classical T Tauri star (cTTS) TW Hya. We observe ~6 × 1021 g of CO gas with a rotational temperature of 430 ± 40 K. The linearity of the excitation plot suggests that the CO is optically thin. Atypical for cTTSs, hot CO was not detected, implying that TW Hya has cleared its inner disk region out to a radial distance of ~0.5 AU. We discuss implications for the structure of the disk as it relates to replenishment and planet formation.

Airglow imager and dynasonde/imaging Doppler interferometer (IDI) radar wind measurements at Halley Station, Antarctica (75.6S, 26.6W) have been used to estimate the seasonal variation of the vertical fluxes of horizontal momentum carried by highfrequency atmospheric gravity waves. The cross-correlation coefficients between the vertical and horizontal wind perturbations were calculated from sodium (Na) airglow imager data collected during the austral winter seasons of 2000 and 2001. These were combined with wind velocity variances from coincident radar measurements to estimate the daily averaged upper limit of the vertical flux of horizontal momentum due to gravity waves. The resulting momentum flux at the …

Rate Of Convergence Of Solutions Of Rational Difference Equation Of Second Order, Senadak Kalabušić, M. R.S. Kulenović

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We investigate the rate of convergence of solutions of some special cases of the equation xn+1 = (α + βxn + γxn-1)/(A + Bxn + Cxn-1), n = 0, 1,..., with positive parameters and nonnegative initial conditions. We give precise results about the rate of convergence of the solutions that converge to the equilibrium or period-two solution by using Poincaré's theorem and an improvement of Perron's theorem.

Academic Effects Of Looping On Elementary Students, Debra Lynn Jones

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Purpose With the No Child Left Behind legislation, schools are considering nontraditional ways of looking at teaching and learning to determine what is academically the most beneficial for all children. Looping is a two year placement of students with the same teacher. This classroom configuration offers an opportunity for teachers to build a community and develop a trusting long term relationship with students and parents. This study compared the academic achievement of third grade students in looping and non looping classrooms. Research Questions ( 1) Is there a difference in academic achievement as measured by IS TEP between looping and …

The Optimality Of Multi-Stage Venture Capital Financing: An Option-Theoretic Approach, Robert Dubil Dec 2004

The Optimality Of Multi-Stage Venture Capital Financing: An Option-Theoretic Approach, Robert Dubil

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

For venture capital firms, facing undiversifiable risks, multi-staged financing is an optimal contract which offers significant risk reduction at a cost of only slightly lower potential return. The optimality does not depend on the presence of moral hazard and agency problems. Our theoretical model of multi-stage financing, largely based on Asian option pricing theory, allows us to compute the risk reduction ratio due to multi-staging. The return on a staged financing plan is equivalent to an exchange of a straight equity stake for that acquired through stochastic averaging over time. We compare standard deviation ratios for staged vs. up-front financings …

The Use Of Aster Visible And Near-Infrared Reflectance Values To Estimate Aboveground Biomass In Terre Haute, In, Joel M. Overpeck Dec 2004

The Use Of Aster Visible And Near-Infrared Reflectance Values To Estimate Aboveground Biomass In Terre Haute, In, Joel M. Overpeck

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Researchers have established that a relationship exists between biomass and satellite reflectance values (Franklin, 1986; Anderson, 1993). Such studies focus on areas with high vegetative homogeneity, with little research being conducted in urban areas. The purpose of this study was to attain a relationship between aboveground biomass and reflectance values from ASTER's (Advanced Spacebome Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer) Visible and Near Infrared (VNIR) sensor. In addition a normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was generated from the near infrared and red bands to test its relationship with biomass. Aboveground biomass values were calculated from fifty-one 15 x 15 meter randomly …

Predictors Of Kindergarten Teachers' Practice Of Developmentally Appropriate Mathematics: Attitudes Toward Mathematics, Attitudes Toward Teaching Mathematics, And Pedagogical Content Knowledge Of Mathematics, Joohi Lee Dec 2004

Predictors Of Kindergarten Teachers' Practice Of Developmentally Appropriate Mathematics: Attitudes Toward Mathematics, Attitudes Toward Teaching Mathematics, And Pedagogical Content Knowledge Of Mathematics, Joohi Lee

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study was intended to identify possible predictors for the practice of developmentally appropriate mathematics. This study tested three possible predictors: 1) kindergarten teachers' attitudes toward mathematics; 2) kindergarten teachers' attitudes toward teaching mathematics; and 3) kindergarten teachers' pedagogical content knowledge of mathematics, and its relationship to predict the practice of developmentally appropriate mathematics. Four research questions were addressed: 1. Do combined factors (kindergarten teachers' attitudes toward mathematics, their attitudes toward teaching mathematics, and their pedagogical content knowledge of mathematics) predict the practice of developmentally appropriate mathematics? 2. Do kindergarten teachers' attitudes toward mathematics predict their use of developmentally appropriate …

Discovery Of The Near-Ir Afterglow And Of The Host Of Grb 030528, A. Rau, J. Greiner, S. Klose, M. Salvato, J. M. Castro Cerón, Dieter H. Hartmann, A. Fruchter, A. Levan, N. R. Tanvir, J. Gorosabel

Publications

The rapid dissemination of an arcmin-sized HETE-2 localization of the long-duration X-ray flash GRB 030528 led to a ground-based multi-observatory follow-up campaign. We report the discovery of the near-IR afterglow, and also describe the detection of the underlying host galaxy in the optical and near-IR bands. The afterglow is classified as “optically dark” as it was not detected in the optical band. The K-band photometry presented here suggests that the lack of optical detection was simply the result of observational limitations (lack of rapid and deep observations plus high foreground extinction). Simple power law fits to the afterglow in the …

Primitive Ideals Of Semigroup Graded Rings, Hema Gopalakrishnan Dec 2004

Primitive Ideals Of Semigroup Graded Rings, Hema Gopalakrishnan

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Prime ideals of strong semigroup graded rings have been characterized by Bell, Stalder and Teply for some important classes of semigroups. The prime ideals correspond to certain families of ideals of the component rings called prime families. In this paper, we define the notion of a primitive family and show that primitive ideals of such rings correspond to primitive families of ideals of the component rings.

Comparison Of Sampling Methods For Flatness Evaluation Using Cmm, Ashish Singhal

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Efficient part feature verification using Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) requires efficient sample point selection as well as accurate zone fitting. This work deals with flatness tolerance evaluation and the Least- Square (LS) technique is used to compute tolerance zone. In regard to the sampling strategy there are several methods commonly employed in Coordinate Measuring Machine inspection literature. The appropriate method is selected according to the accuracy requirement, the geometry features of the work piece, and the condition of the machine producing the work piece. This research focuses on the five sampling methods: Hammersley sequence sampling, Halton-Zaremba sequence sampling, Random sampling, …

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

The competition of monovalent and divalent cations for proximity to negatively charged DNA is of biological importance and can provide strong constraints for theoretical treatments of polyelectrolytes. Resonant x-ray scattering experiments have allowed us to monitor the number and distribution of each cation in a mixed ion cloud around DNA. These measurements provide experimental evidence to support a general theoretical prediction: the normalized distribution of each ion around polyelectrolytes remains constant when ions are mixed at different ratios. In addition, the amplitudes of the scattering signals throughout the competition provide a measurement of the surface concentration parameter that predicts the …

Vertical Nanowire Light-Emitting Diode, Rolf Könenkamp, Robert Campbell Word, C. Schlegel Dec 2004

Vertical Nanowire Light-Emitting Diode, Rolf Könenkamp, Robert Campbell Word, C. Schlegel

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We report room-temperature, white-color electroluminescence in vertically oriented ZnO nanowires. Excitonic luminescence around 380 nm is observed as a shoulder on a broader defect-related band covering all of the visible range and centered at 620 nm. The ZnO nanowires are grown in a low-temperature process on SnO2-coated glass substrates, employing a technique that is suitable for large-area applications. The nanowires are robustly encapsulated in a thin polystyrene film deposited from high-molecular-weight solutions. Electron injection occurs through the transparent SnO2 layer, while hole injection is mediated by a p-doped polymer and an evaporated Au contact. Stable device operation …

Laboratory Experiments Of Entrainment In Dry Convective Boundary Layers, Harm J.J. Jonker, Thijs Heus, Esther Hagen, Han Van Dop

Physics Faculty Publications

Entrainment in dry convective boundary layers was studied. A saline convection tank set-up was used as a laboratory model for a dry convective atmospheric boundary layer. The entrainment flux was measured using planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF). It was found that the entrainment flux reveals a much stronger dependence on the inversion strength than large eddy simulations tend to do.

Electrical Charge Distribution Studies In Swnt, C60@Swnt, And Dwnt Structures., Jose E. Rivera 1961- Dec 2004

Electrical Charge Distribution Studies In Swnt, C60@Swnt, And Dwnt Structures., Jose E. Rivera 1961-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes (SWNTs), Double Walled Carbon nanotubes (DWNTs) and C60@SWNT (peapods) are three of well-ordered all-carbon nanostructures. Peapods are SWNTs filled with C60 fullerene peas. At high temperatues, C60 molecules coalesce into a long internal SWNT forming a DWNT. Charge transfer properties on SWNTs (both donor and acceptor type) have been studied intensively by various groups. Few groups have conducted such studies on peapods and DWNTs. In a recent study on Br2 doping of DWNTs using Raman spectroscopy, it has been found that the net charge primarily resides on the outer tube revealing molecular Faraday cage effect even …

The Analysis Of Missing Data In Public Use Survey Databases : A Survey Of Statistical Methods., Ping Xu 1975-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Missing data is very common in survey research. However, currently few guidelines exist with regard to the diagnosis and remedy to missing data in survey research. The goal of this thesis was to investigate properties and effects of three selected missing data techniques (listwise deletion, hot deck imputation, and multiple imputation) via a simulation study, and apply the three methods to address the missing race problem in a real data set extracted from teh National Hospital Discharge Survey. The results of this study showed that multiple imputation and hot deck imputation procedures provided more reliable parameter estimates than did listwise …
