Faculty Articles

We present a wide-field, subarcminute-resolution VLA image of the Galactic center region at 330 MHz. With a resolution of ~7'' × 12'' and an rms noise of 1.6 mJy beam-1, this image represents a significant increase in resolution and sensitivity over the previously published VLA image at this frequency. The improved sensitivity has more than tripled the census of small-diameter sources in the region, has resulted in the detection of two new nonthermal filaments (NTFs), 18 NTF candidates, and 30 pulsar candidates, reveals previously known extended sources in greater detail, and has resulted in the first detection of …

Regular Polytopes, Jonathan Comes

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In the last proposition of the Elements Euclid proved that there are only five regular polyhedra, namely the tetrahedron, octahedron, icosahedron, cube, and dodecahedron. To show there can be no more than five he used the fact that in a polyhedra, the sum of the interior angles of the faces which meet at each vertex must be less than 360.

The Morley Trisector Theorem, Grant Swicegood

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This paper deals with an unannounced theorem by Frank Morley that he originally published amid a collection of other, more general, theorems. Having intrigued mathematicians for the past century, it is now simply referred to as Morley’s trisector theorem:

The three intersections of the angles of a triangle, lying near the three sides respectively, form an equilateral triangle.

Spatiotemporal Distribution Of Marine Magnetotactic Bacteria In A Seasonally Stratified Coastal Salt Pond, S. L. Simmons, S. M. Sievert, Richard B. Frankel, Dennis A. Bazylinski, K. J. Edwards Oct 2004

Spatiotemporal Distribution Of Marine Magnetotactic Bacteria In A Seasonally Stratified Coastal Salt Pond, S. L. Simmons, S. M. Sievert, Richard B. Frankel, Dennis A. Bazylinski, K. J. Edwards

Physics

The occurrence and distribution of magnetotactic bacteria (MB) were studied as a function of the physical and chemical conditions in meromictic Salt Pond, Falmouth, Mass., throughout summer 2002. Three dominant MB morphotypes were observed to occur within the chemocline. Small microaerophilic magnetite-producing cocci were present at the top of the chemocline, while a greigite-producing packet-forming bacterium occurred at the base of the chemocline. The distributions of these groups displayed sharp changes in abundance over small length scales within the water column as well as strong seasonal fluctuations in population abundance. We identified a novel, greigite-producing rod in the sulfidic hypolimnion …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The braconid larval parasitoid, Cotesia flavipes, is used as a biological control agent against the crambid Chilo partellus, a serious pest of cereal crops in eastern and southern Africa. We examined the survival, development parameters, and body growth patterns of the host and its parasitoid at different temperatures (22, 26, and 30°C) using third and fourth instars of Ch. partellus. For non-parasitized hosts, larval mortality tended to be highest at lowest temperature and for parasitized at third host instars only at highest temperature. Development time of Co. flavipes immatures significantly decreased with host instar and with temperature. Sex ratio of …

Photometric Identification Of Cool White Dwarfs, M. Kilic, D. E. Winget, Ted Von Hippel, C. F. Claver

Publications

We investigate the use of a narrowband DDO51 filter for photometric identification of cool white dwarfs. We report photometric observations of 30 known cool white dwarfs with temperatures ranging from 10,000 K down to very cool temperatures (3500 K). Follow-up spectroscopic observations of a sample of objects selected using this filter and our photometric observations show that DDO51 filter photometry can help select cool white dwarf candidates for follow-up multiobject spectroscopy by rejecting 65% of main-sequence stars with the same broadband colors as the cool white dwarfs. This technique is not selective enough to efficiently feed single-object spectrographs. We present …

Dynamic Access Control For Multi-Privileged Group Communications, Di Ma, Robert H. Deng, Yongdong Wu, Tieyan Li Oct 2004

Dynamic Access Control For Multi-Privileged Group Communications, Di Ma, Robert H. Deng, Yongdong Wu, Tieyan Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recently, there is an increase in the number of group communication applications which support multiple service groups of different access privileges. Traditional access control schemes for group applications assume that all the group members have the same access privilege and mostly focus on how to reduce rekeying messages upon user joining and leaving. Relatively little research effort has been spent to address security issues for group communications supporting multiple access privileges. In this paper, we propose a dynamic access control scheme for group communications which support multiple service groups with different access privileges. Our scheme allows dynamic formation of service …

Probabilistic Balancing Of Fault Coverage And Test Cost In Combined Built-In Self-Test/Automated Test Equipment Testing Environment, Shanrui Zhang, Minsu Choi, Nohpill Park, Fabrizio Lombardi Oct 2004

Probabilistic Balancing Of Fault Coverage And Test Cost In Combined Built-In Self-Test/Automated Test Equipment Testing Environment, Shanrui Zhang, Minsu Choi, Nohpill Park, Fabrizio Lombardi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

As design and test complexities of SoCs ever intensify, the balanced utilization of combined built-in self-test (BIST) and automated test equipment (ATE) testing becomes desirable to meet the required minimum-fault-coverage while maintaining an acceptable cost overhead. The cost associated with combined BIST/ATE testing of such systems mainly consists of 1) the cost induced by the BIST area overhead and 2) the cost induced by the overall testing time. In general, BIST is significantly faster than ATE, while it can provide only limited fault-coverage, and driving higher fault-coverage from BIST means additional area cost overhead. On the other hand, higher fault-coverage …

4-H Experiential Education--A Model For 4-H Science As Inquiry, Virginia D. Bourdeau Oct 2004

4-H Experiential Education--A Model For 4-H Science As Inquiry, Virginia D. Bourdeau

Journal of Extension

Science education can be improved by immersing learners in the process of using scientific knowledge to "do" science at their 4-H club or school outdoor learning center. In Oregon school-based 4-H programs, the 4-H Science Inquiry in Action model assists volunteers and teachers in moving away from "cookbook experiments" toward learner-centered experiential programs. Using the 4-H Inquiry in Action model, 4-H Agents, leaders, and schoolteachers can make any pre-scripted activity more engaging for youth learners.

Improving Transliteration With Precise Alignment Of Phoneme Chunks And Using Contextual Features, Wei Gao, Kam-Fai Wong, Wai Lam Oct 2004

Improving Transliteration With Precise Alignment Of Phoneme Chunks And Using Contextual Features, Wei Gao, Kam-Fai Wong, Wai Lam

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Automatic transliteration of foreign names is basically regarded as a diminutive clone of the machine translation (MT) problem. It thus follows IBM’s conventional MT models under the sourcechannel framework. Nonetheless, some parameters of this model dealing with zero-fertility words in the target sequences, can negatively impact transliteration effectiveness because of the inevitable inverted conditional probability estimation. Instead of source-channel, this paper presents a direct probabilistic transliteration model using contextual features of phonemes with a tailored alignment scheme for phoneme chunks. Experiments demonstrate superior performance over the source-channel for the task of English-Chinese transliteration.

Significant Crustal Thinning Beneath The Baikal Rift Zone: New Constraints From Receiver Function Analysis, Stephen S. Gao, Kelly H. Liu, Chizheng Chen Oct 2004

Significant Crustal Thinning Beneath The Baikal Rift Zone: New Constraints From Receiver Function Analysis, Stephen S. Gao, Kelly H. Liu, Chizheng Chen

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Thinning of the crust of more than 10 km is a major feature of typical continental rifts such as the East African (EAR) and Rio Grande (RGR) rifts. However, numerous previous studies across the Baikal rift zone (BRZ), which has similar surface expressions and tectonic history, and more active seismicity relative to EAR and RGR, have resulted in contradicting amount of thinning, ranging from almost none to more than 10 km. We measure crustal thickness by stacking teleseismic receiver functions beneath 51 sites on the southern and central parts of the BRZ and adjacent Siberian Platform and Sayan-Baikal-Mongolian Foldbelt. Our …

Growth And Magnetic Properties Of Mno₂-Δ Nanowire Microspheres, Jinbo Yang, X.-D. Zhou, Satish K. Malik, C. S. Wang, William Joseph James Oct 2004

Growth And Magnetic Properties Of Mno₂-Δ Nanowire Microspheres, Jinbo Yang, X.-D. Zhou, Satish K. Malik, C. S. Wang, William Joseph James

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We report the synthesis of MnO2-delta microspheres using hydrothermal and conventional chemical reaction methods. The microspheres of MnO2-delta consist of nanowires having a diameter of 20-50 nm and a length of 2-8 µm. The value of oxygen vacancy delta estimated from x-ray photoelectron spectrum is 0.3. The magnetization versus temperature curve indicates a magnetic transition at about 13 K. It is found that a parasitic ferromagnetic component is imposed on the antiferromagnetic structure of MnO2-delta, which might result from distortion of the lattice structure due to oxygen vacancies. The magnetic transition temperature TN is about 10 K lower than that …

Batches of mosquitoes were fed artificially on gametocyteamic blood obtained from human volunteers and then held in five environmental conditions described as: (1) incubator maintained at constant temperature of 28 ± 1°C as control; (2) temperature unregulated laboratory environment; (3) screen house; (4) grass thatched mud house and (5) corrugated iron roofed mud house. Both the grass and iron roofed mud houses were real houses found in the village communities around the ICIPE Research Centre in Mbita …

Constructing A Coincident Index Of Business Cycles Without Assuming A One-Factor Model, Roberto S. Mariano, Yasutomo Murasawa Oct 2004

Constructing A Coincident Index Of Business Cycles Without Assuming A One-Factor Model, Roberto S. Mariano, Yasutomo Murasawa

Research Collection School Of Economics

The Stock-Watson coincident index and its subsequent extensions assume a static linear one-factor structure for the component indicators. Such assumption is restrictive in practice, however, with as few as four indicators. In fact, such assumption is unnecessary if one defines a coincident index as an estimate of latent monthly real GDP. This paper considers VAR and factor models for latent monthly real GDP and other coincident indicators, and estimates the models using the observable mixed-frequency series. For US data, Schwartz’s Bayesian information criterion selects a two-factor model. The smoothed estimate of latent monthly real GDP is the proposed index.

Swing-Up And Balancing Nonlinear Control For A Rotational Inverted Pendulum, Jiang Wang Oct 2004

Swing-Up And Balancing Nonlinear Control For A Rotational Inverted Pendulum, Jiang Wang

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis, nonlinear controllers are designed for the swing-up and balance modes of a rotational inverted pendulum, which is a pendulum hinged on a horizontally rotating link. The proposed control algorithms are designed by partial feedback linearization and sliding mode control techniques, for swing-up and balancing respectively. First a mathematical model of the pendulum dynamics is derived, followed by experimental verification. Then the system model is partially linearized, which makes it possible for the system to track a simple desired trajectory with "pump energy" function. Then a swing-up controller is designed. For an under-actuated mechanical system, like the inverted …

Application Of Queuing Theory And Procedure Time Estimation In A Local Healthcare System, Galina Tsoy Oct 2004

Application Of Queuing Theory And Procedure Time Estimation In A Local Healthcare System, Galina Tsoy

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

People in the United States pay more for their basic healthcare needs than do people in any other nation in the world. When we consider that the United States is the wealthiest nation in the world, controlling the majority of the world's resources, it seems only reasonable to ask: Why should it be this way?

In an effort to address this problem, this thesis examines two possible methods of improving health care efficiency in hospitals. The thesis is thus in two parts: the first part examines resource allocation in medical units using Queuing Theory, and the second part examines a …
