Medieval Nominalism And The Literary Questions: Selected Studies, Richard Utz, Terry Barakat
Medieval Nominalism And The Literary Questions: Selected Studies, Richard Utz, Terry Barakat
Medieval Institute Affiliated Faculty & Staff Publications
Like few other topics in the academic study of medieval literature, the search for the possible parallels between philosophical and literary texts reveals the not always peaceful coexistence among the three basic approaches to the study of medieval literature and culture: While hard-core medieval philologists would not accept any claims for a “literary nominalism” unless direct textual dependence can be demonstrated, scholars in medieval studies and the comparative study of medieval literature have shown themselves more accepting of investigations which diagnose a certain nominalistic Zeitgeist, mentality, or milieu especially in late medieval culture; and scholars preferring presentist/postmodern approaches have wholeheartedly …

"Everybody Drinks Water": Mark Twain's Critique Of Social Darwinism, Sarah Vales '04
"Everybody Drinks Water": Mark Twain's Critique Of Social Darwinism, Sarah Vales '04
Honors Projects, History
Mark Twain wrote during the time period from approximately 1860 to 1900, commonly known as the Gilded Age. Change defined these years as America industrialized, urbanized, and expanded. Along with the change came an array of social problems, which produced a dichotomy between the outward success of the changes and the inward turmoil wrought on society.
Orszula's Death: Grief And Consolation In The Renaissance--The Treny Of Jan Kochanowski, Michael Tworek
Orszula's Death: Grief And Consolation In The Renaissance--The Treny Of Jan Kochanowski, Michael Tworek
History Honors Theses
n this thesis, I use the Treny, a late 16th century collection of nineteen poems by the Polish humanist Jan Kochanowski, as a basis from which to reconstruct a historical narrative of his attempt at self-consolation over the death of his daughter and, in the process, reconsider our current understanding of the Renaissance in Europe. Until fairly recently, scholars have tended to view the Renaissance as a primarily Italian or western European phenomenon. Eastern Europe receives little mention in current academic discussions of the Renaissance. This thesis, however, will show that the Treny does offer compelling evidence that this view …

Stories Find You: Narratives Of Place In A Central Yup'ik Community, Holly M. Cusack-Mcveigh
Stories Find You: Narratives Of Place In A Central Yup'ik Community, Holly M. Cusack-Mcveigh
Anthropology
Yup'ik narratives of place make powerful statements about the health or illness of the world. Such stories illustrate how the land itself is responsive to human thought and action. The land, in essence, is a being among beings, and a particularly powerful and sensitive one. The sentient world responds to joy as well as to sorrow. This is an essential aspect of place in southwestern Alaska. In Hooper Bay, stories confer both personal and political power, allowing people to instruct others about dangerous situations, and indirectly make statements about events that are otherwise unspoken for fear of "making bad things …

A Summary Of Alaskool Web Site Survey Results: What's Useful And What Can Be Improved?, Suzanne Sharp, Katie Eberhart
ISER Reports
"This report summarizes the results of a survey the Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER) and First Alaskans Institute (FAI) developed to determine how useful the Alaskool Web site- www.alaskool.org-is and how it might be improved. To understand the survey results, it's helpful to know the background of the Alaskool Web site. The Alaskool Web site is the product of the Alaska Native Curriculum and Teacher Development Project, designed in the late 1990s by Paul Ongtooguk and John Pingayak-two Native educators - and Bill McDiarmid, who at that time was the director of ISER. They saw that resources teachers …

The Status Of Alaska Natives Report 2004 Volumes I - Iii, Linda Leask, David Marshall, Scott Goldsmith, Alexandra Hill, Jane Angvik, Lance Howe, Brian L. Saylor
ISER Reports
The Alaska Federation of Natives asked ISER to report on social and economic conditions among Alaska Natives. We found that Natives have more jobs, higher incomes, and better living conditions, health care, and education than ever. But they remain several times more likely than other Alaskans to be poor and out of work. Alcohol continues to fuel widespread social problems. Native students continue to do poorly on standard tests, and they’re dropping out in growing numbers. Rates of heart disease and diabetes are rising. In the face of all these challenges, subsistence remains critical for cultural and economic reasons. And …

Leaving King Island: The Closure Of A Bureau Of Indian Affairs School And Its Consequences, Nicole M. Braem
Arctic and Northern Studies
By 1966, the King Island Inupiat had moved from their island village and lived at Nome. Little has been written about the de facto relocation of the King Islanders---and how and why it happened. What follows is an ethnohistory of the relocation based on the anthropology and history of the Bering Strait region, archival records of the Bureau of Indian Affairs and interviews with King Islanders in Nome. The heart of the matter was the village's school. Based on the evidence, the BIA closed the school because of the expense and inconvenience of operating at King Island. This accomplished what …

The purpose of this study was to implement the balanced literacy approach to reading instruction for two-hundred sixteen kindergarten through third graders, as a means of increasing student achievement, focusing instruction school wide, and creating a collaborative instructional culture. Data to evaluate the study took the forms of teacher surveys and reflective essays, screening and progress monitoring assessments and standardized test results. Teacher surveys and reflections were collected and analyzed for consistent patterns, professional development needs, and/or areas of growth.
