The Strength Of Multidimensional Item Response Theory In Exploring Construct Space That Is Multidimensional And Correlated, Steven Gerry Spencer Dec 2004

The Strength Of Multidimensional Item Response Theory In Exploring Construct Space That Is Multidimensional And Correlated, Steven Gerry Spencer

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation compares the parameter estimates obtained from two item response theory (IRT) models: the 1-PL IRT model and the MC1-PL IRT model. Several scenarios were explored in which both unidimensional and multidimensional item-level and personal-level data were used to generate the item responses. The Monte Carlo simulations mirrored the real-life application of the two correlated dimensions of Necessary Operations and Calculations in the basic mathematics domain. In all scenarios, the MC1-PL IRT model showed greater precision in the recovery of the true underlying item difficulty values and person theta values along each primary dimension as well as along a …

Reparations And Unjust Enrichment, Emily Sherwin Dec 2004

Reparations And Unjust Enrichment, Emily Sherwin

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Despite an initial appearance of superior doctrinal fit, restitution is not an appropriate vehicle for reparations claims based on slavery and similar large-scale historical injustices. The justifying principle behind restitution—prevention of unjust enrichment—lacks the moral force necessary to resolve a controversial public dispute about moral rights and obligations among segments of society. At its core, a claim to restitution is an attempt to right a wrong not by alleviating the adverse consequences to oneself, but by diminishing the position of others. In other words, the notion of unjust enrichment is a comparative idea that draws on resentment and the desire …

The Spouse In The House: What Explains The Marriage Gap In Canada?, J. Matthew Wilson, Michael Lusztig Dec 2004

The Spouse In The House: What Explains The Marriage Gap In Canada?, J. Matthew Wilson, Michael Lusztig

Political Science Research

A literature has emerged in American voting studies noting a “marriage gap”—the propensity for married voters to support the Republican party. Using Canadian Election Study data, we establish the existence of a significant marriage gap in Canada. We also seek to determine if the marriage gap is driven by socio-demographic factors or attitudinal ones. We find that while socio-demographic factors contribute to the marriage gap, they explain relatively little variance. In probing the attitudinal basis of the marriage gap further, we find that married Canadians differ from the unwed very strongly on issues of moral traditionalism, but much less so …

Physical, Social, And Documentary Genocide: The Monacan Indian Nation V. The Commonwealth Of Virginia, Michael C. Cundiff Dec 2004

Physical, Social, And Documentary Genocide: The Monacan Indian Nation V. The Commonwealth Of Virginia, Michael C. Cundiff

Theses & Honors Papers

Basic human rights for all citizens, is a standard in Western society which is often taken for granted. When we look back at our past it becomes clear that this standard has not always been the norm. The key to assuring that the future will continue to hold promise and opportunity for all is to remain ever conscious of our collective history and what it has to teach us about where we are headed. This research examines prejudice, racism and bigotry and the "trickle down" effect that these fear based traits can have on all strata of society. By examining …

Diagnostic Assessment Of Childhood Apraxia Of Speech Using Automatic Speech Recognition (Asr) Methods, John-Paul Hosom, Lawrence Shriberg, Jordan R. Green Dec 2004

Diagnostic Assessment Of Childhood Apraxia Of Speech Using Automatic Speech Recognition (Asr) Methods, John-Paul Hosom, Lawrence Shriberg, Jordan R. Green

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

We report findings from two feasibility studies using automatic speech recognition (ASR) methods in childhood speech sound disorders. The studies evaluated and implemented the automation of two recently proposed diagnostic markers for suspected Apraxia of Speech (AOS) termed the Lexical Stress Ratio (LSR) and the Coefficient of Variation Ratio (CVR). The LSR is a weighted composite of amplitude area, frequency area , and duration in the stressed compared to the unstressed vowel as obtained from a speaker’s productions of eight trochaic word forms. Composite weightings for the three stress parameters were determined from a principal components analysis. The CVR expresses …

Tourism And Rural Identity In The Waasland, Belgium, Joel Stuart Thomas Dec 2004

Tourism And Rural Identity In The Waasland, Belgium, Joel Stuart Thomas

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The northern portion of Belgium, a region known as Flanders, is one of the most densely settled, industrialized areas in the world. Existing in small, isolated tracts, are "green spaces" mainly devoted to agricultural output.

The Flemish way of life and environment has become increasingly "urbanized." Tourism commissions operating in the countryside have drawn on Flemish heritage and identity, as well as the rural landscape to act as marketing tools. In terms of perception and the notion of a distinctly Flemish rural "space'" how are tourist flow patterns influenced? Does the process of perception result in an exclusive urban to …

Trop De Soleil Tue L'Amour : Une Expression De L'Écriture Du Mal-Être De Mongo Beti, Rodolphine Sylvie Wamba Dec 2004

Trop De Soleil Tue L'Amour : Une Expression De L'Écriture Du Mal-Être De Mongo Beti, Rodolphine Sylvie Wamba

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

The classical and dissident African writer Mongo Beti perpetually uses the theme of man’s quest for freedom in everything he does. In fact, the philosophy of “Rubénism” is found in each of his works. Given that man must survive in the “ocean of shit” he lives in, the writer, using a popular language, freely chooses to add some humour to everyday life. Thus, the text we studied appeared as a genuine thriller, complete with comedy and tragedy, which presents a deviation from more formal writing. This is the main idea of this analysis, which consists of showing Trop de soleil …

Human Rights, Sovereignty, And The Final Status Of Kosovo , Bartram S. Brown Dec 2004

Human Rights, Sovereignty, And The Final Status Of Kosovo , Bartram S. Brown

Chicago-Kent Law Review

The final political status of Kosovo is ultimately a human rights issue, and a just and viable solution must balance the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Serbia with the human rights of Kosovar Albanians. A century ago Woodrow Wilson publicly endorsed self-determination as a fundamental principle linked to the equal rights of all peoples. Today it is broadly accepted as one of the essential principles of contemporary international law. Despite this exalted normative status, the principle of self-determination is limited by its inherent ambiguities.

Self-determination is a group right, to be exercised only by peoples, but there is no clear …

Predictors Of Kindergarten Teachers' Practice Of Developmentally Appropriate Mathematics: Attitudes Toward Mathematics, Attitudes Toward Teaching Mathematics, And Pedagogical Content Knowledge Of Mathematics, Joohi Lee

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study was intended to identify possible predictors for the practice of developmentally appropriate mathematics. This study tested three possible predictors: 1) kindergarten teachers' attitudes toward mathematics; 2) kindergarten teachers' attitudes toward teaching mathematics; and 3) kindergarten teachers' pedagogical content knowledge of mathematics, and its relationship to predict the practice of developmentally appropriate mathematics. Four research questions were addressed: 1. Do combined factors (kindergarten teachers' attitudes toward mathematics, their attitudes toward teaching mathematics, and their pedagogical content knowledge of mathematics) predict the practice of developmentally appropriate mathematics? 2. Do kindergarten teachers' attitudes toward mathematics predict their use of developmentally appropriate …

Final Status Of Kosovo: The Role Of Human Rights And Minority Rights , Wolfgang Benedek Dec 2004

Final Status Of Kosovo: The Role Of Human Rights And Minority Rights , Wolfgang Benedek

Chicago-Kent Law Review

In view of the massive human rights violations experienced in Kosovo, the reconstruction of society and the final status of the territory have to be based on human rights and minority rights. Besides universal human rights instruments, European regional standards are of particular importance as Kosovo wants to be fully integrated into Europe. The Article identifies the relevant European and international standards and procedures and finds shortcomings with regard to guarantees on economic, social, and cultural rights, which are an indispensable element of human security.

It then compares the role given to human and minority rights in the Constitutional Framework …

Some Key Principles For A Lasting Solution Of The Status Of Kosova: Uti Possidetis, The Ethnic Principle, And Self-Determination, Zeinullah Gruda Dec 2004

Some Key Principles For A Lasting Solution Of The Status Of Kosova: Uti Possidetis, The Ethnic Principle, And Self-Determination, Zeinullah Gruda

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Five years after the end of the conflict in Kosova, final status remains an object of discussion. The author elaborates several options that have been proposed by analysts, diplomats, and various forums. The author argues that final status must be based on the factors that influence the creation of states and on the principles behind any democratic and just solution concerning statehood: uti possidetis, the ethnic principle, and the right to self-determination.

The Legal And Political Grounds For, And The Influence Of The Actual Situation On, The Demand Of The Albanians Of Kosovo For Independence, Hajredin Kuci Dec 2004

The Legal And Political Grounds For, And The Influence Of The Actual Situation On, The Demand Of The Albanians Of Kosovo For Independence, Hajredin Kuci

Chicago-Kent Law Review

The Article argues in support of the Kosovar Albanians' right to independence and self-determination. By examining the ancient and recent ethnic history of these people and their neighbors, particularly the Serbs, the author brings to light the shared beliefs within each group. Then by examining developments since the dissolution of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, through the lenses of international law and politics, the author analyzes the building blocks of sovereign statehood: defined borders, governmental institutions, and international recognition.

Lessons From The Interpretation/ Misinterpretation Of John Ogbu’S Scholarship, Edmund T. Hamann Dec 2004

Lessons From The Interpretation/ Misinterpretation Of John Ogbu’S Scholarship, Edmund T. Hamann

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

In November 2003, the Council on Anthropology and Education honored John Ogbu with the George and Louise Spindler Award, for exemplary and long-term contributions to educational anthropology. But in March 2003, a noted economist condemned Ogbu’s work as serving an “oppressive function.” In this paper, such contradictory instances are cited as the author recounts his encounters with Ogbu’s scholarship. Disparate assessments of Ogbu’s ideas and legacy raise important questions. What responsibility do educational anthropologists have for how their research is understood? Which aspects of Ogbu’s legacy should we hold onto as his work is interpreted in politicized and polarized ways?

Between A Rock And A Hard Place: Sovereignty And International Protection, Fred L. Morrison Dec 2004

Between A Rock And A Hard Place: Sovereignty And International Protection, Fred L. Morrison

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Resolution for final status for Kosovo will require the participants to steer a course between claims of national sovereignty and those of international guarantees and controls. Negotiation of that status will require the parties to resolve a broad range of issues, ranging from economic and transit matters to the protection of minority rights. Establishment of an international commission to protect minority rights, perhaps modeled on the European Commission on Human Rights under the original form of the European Convention on the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, may be a useful first step in providing non-adversarial resolution of controversies …

Right from his first novel, Les Soleils des Indépendances (1970), Kourouma introduced the theme of the reversed world, a baroque metaphor for the state of Africa after Independence. In Monnè (1990), telling the history of this reversal, he insisted on its linguistic roots. Consequently, En attendant le vote des bêtes sauvages (1998) shows how this reversal in the context of Cold War, favoured the genesis and development of dictatorial powers leading to an actual apocalypse. This victory of Chaos is told as a donsomana, traditional song of expiation among the Malinke hunters. The forms and magic virtues of this song …

Middle And High School Principals' Knowledge Of Discipline Provisions Of The Individuals With Disabilities Education Act In The Upper East Tennessee Region., Ginger R. Woods Dec 2004

Middle And High School Principals' Knowledge Of Discipline Provisions Of The Individuals With Disabilities Education Act In The Upper East Tennessee Region., Ginger R. Woods

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine school principals’ knowledge of discipline provisions of The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Amendments of 1997 and to determine what additional training opportunities may be needed to ensure that school systems in the upper East Tennessee region are in compliance under IDEA. As instructional leaders, it is imperative that principals understand their responsibilities and the importance of adhering to the legal obligations under IDEA. Principals who do not comply with the act not only deny students the education to which they are entitled but also expose the school system to costly litigation. …
