Faith And Responsibility In The Global Village (Chapter 5 Of My Place In The World, Ken Badley
Faculty Publications - College of Education
In many ways, people around the world are becoming one big community. The media are connecting us. So are business, industry, and culture. This chapter explores the character of the global village, suggesting how people of religious faith might point the way forward so that all members of the human community may enjoy greater security and a more equitable share in what the world has to offer.

Lego Mindstorms As A Training Tool For Software Development Methodology In Multimedia Education., Elias Wyber
Lego Mindstorms As A Training Tool For Software Development Methodology In Multimedia Education., Elias Wyber
Creative Connections Symposium @ BEAP2004 September 4, 2004
This paper outlines an approach to educating multimedia practitioners utilizing Lego MindStorms® which evolved out of a desire to bridge the technical and aesthetic worldviews. The approach focuses on three aspects of the development process. First, it examines the linguistic model of code production. In order to convey the act of writing code as a linguistic task, the students are introduced to several aspects of linguistic theory, with examples illustrating their application in spoken, programmed and Lego MindStorms® based languages. The second area of focus is object theory. Adopting a similar approach to the previous section, but giving only Lego …
Bias In The Evaluation Process: Influences Of Speaker Order, Speaker Quality, And Gender On Rater Error In The Performance Based Course, Paul D. Turman, Matthew H. Barton
Bias In The Evaluation Process: Influences Of Speaker Order, Speaker Quality, And Gender On Rater Error In The Performance Based Course, Paul D. Turman, Matthew H. Barton
Basic Communication Course Annual
This study examines how variations in speaker order increase the potential for rater error in the performance based course. Seventy-six undergraduate raters were randomly assigned to one of eight treatment groups and asked to grade eight-week training course. Speaker order and presentation quality varied across groups and an ANOVA was used to examine significant differences across rater assessments, feedback quality and rater gender. Significant main effects were identified in each of the eight treatment groups suggesting that speaker order influenced rater scoring.
Communication Lab Peer Facilitators: What's In It For Them?, M. Tanya Bran-Barrett, Judith A. Rolls
Communication Lab Peer Facilitators: What's In It For Them?, M. Tanya Bran-Barrett, Judith A. Rolls
Basic Communication Course Annual
Peer tutors have been used extensively within the communication discipline to enhance students' learning experiences (Hill, 1981; Webb & Lane, 1986). Research suggests that peer tutoring can have positive rewards for tutors and tutees (Goodland & Hurst, 1989; Topping, 1996). However, there is little to no research that explores the benefits received by peer tutors who run small group communication lab sessions for basic communication course students.
The qualitative data from focus group indicate that peer facilitators experienced: 1) self-development in terms of their self-esteem, confidence, and respect from themselves and others; 2) improved public speaking skills and better interpersonal …
Special Forum On The Philosophy Of Teaching Education As Communication: The Pragmatist Tradition, Chad Edwards, Gregory J. Shepherd
Special Forum On The Philosophy Of Teaching Education As Communication: The Pragmatist Tradition, Chad Edwards, Gregory J. Shepherd
Basic Communication Course Annual
We take the basic course in communication to be a site where associated living is experienced, and where individuals practice the democratic art of referencing and articulating their own behaviors and beliefs to those of others. This democratic practice is associated living is, as American pragmatist and educational philosopher John Dewey insisted, communication itself -- "conjoint communicated experience." In this essay, we provide an overview of this pragmatist educational metaphysic and discuss a few consequences of metaphysical beliefs about education.

Department Of Anthropology And Geography Self-Study Report To The Academic Planning Committee, Department Of Anthropology And Geography
Department Of Anthropology And Geography Self-Study Report To The Academic Planning Committee, Department Of Anthropology And Geography
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
In January of 2001 the Department of Anthropology and the Department of Geography became the Department of Anthropology and Geography. This merger was not requested by members of either unit: it was imposed administratively. Under ideal circumstance, such mergers evolve organically through a history of collaborations from the bottom up. Nevertheless, faculty of each unit had collaborated in a variety of contexts so there was some basis for integration. As one may imagine, one of the first things we set out to accomplish as a newly formed unit was the establishment of a common set of by-laws. After about six …
Supreme Court Narratives On Equality And Gender Discrimination In Employment: 1971-2002, Vicki Lens
Supreme Court Narratives On Equality And Gender Discrimination In Employment: 1971-2002, Vicki Lens
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The article examines the Supreme Court's evolving approach to gender discrimination in the workplace, particularly during the 1970s and 1980s, as it grappled with the intersection of formal and substantive equality. The Court's decisions reflected the influence of the feminist movement and broader societal shifts, addressing issues such as pregnancy-related discrimination, sexual harassment, and workplace stereotypes. While the Court often invalidated discriminatory practices, its rulings also revealed tensions in balancing equal treatment with competing interests, such as military preparedness or employer liability. The analysis highlights how the Court's narrative on gender equality was shaped by legal doctrines, cultural values, and …

Botany In Children's Literature: A Content Analysis Of Plant-Centered Children's Picture Books That Have A Plot And Characters, Sheila Lewis Goins
Botany In Children's Literature: A Content Analysis Of Plant-Centered Children's Picture Books That Have A Plot And Characters, Sheila Lewis Goins
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This content analysis study examined 36 plant-centered children’s science picture books that have a plot and characters published from 1950 to present. Botanical subject matter and learning opportunities offered by these books were analyzed, along with the range and frequency of the National Science Education Standards-consistent and age-appropriate plant science concepts and principles. The science graphics, artistic innovations, and story plot of these books were also examined. Rubrics and research-based recommendations were developed to offer parents, teachers, and librarians assistance in identifying, evaluating, and using such books to help children of ages 4-8 learn about plants and enjoy plant science. …
Tethered Polymers: Kinetics And Control, Heqing Huang
Tethered Polymers: Kinetics And Control, Heqing Huang
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation describes a study of the kinetics of formation of tethered polymer layers. Polymer chains diffuse from dilute solution to the surface a solid, to which they become attached by one end. Kinetics profiles composed of three distinct regimes are displayed by all tethering reactions studied in the absence of segmental adsorption, regardless of solvent quality, temperature, chemistry of polymer, architecture of polymer, and type of reactive site on the surface. The first regime, fast and predicted previously by theory, is controlled by diffusion of the polymer chains through solution to the bare surface. The second regime, slow and …
Storytelling From The Margins: The Healing Narratives Of J. California Cooper, Cynthia Downing Bryant
Storytelling From The Margins: The Healing Narratives Of J. California Cooper, Cynthia Downing Bryant
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study examines the therapeutic qualities of selected short stories and novels by contemporary African American woman writer, J. California Cooper. Specifically, I examine the manner in which Cooper's texts can be appreciated as "healing narratives." Healing narratives, as defined in this study, are those texts in which the author consciously creates fictitious representations of reality, while employing the concept of hope as a central and guiding factor. Those aspects of the narrative that have the ability to heal or "lay hands on" a reader vary because the effectiveness of the story depends upon how well the reader can identify …
My Maiden Cowboy Names: Poems, Victoria Brockmeier
My Maiden Cowboy Names: Poems, Victoria Brockmeier
LSU Master's Theses
On the title: for a dichotomy of vulnerability and resistance; for self as plural and/or changeable; for acts of claiming. To hint at tone, setting, and content. On sound: to shape a poem's mood, and because these pieces should leave your mouth a little tired if you read them out loud. On lineation: to highlight the near-misses in language-ambiguities, double meanings, troublesome literalization-and to see these not as pitfalls but as opportunities. On stanza and strophe breaks: if a stanza is a room, the breaks between must be doorways, and who wants to sit down and rest in a doorway? …

Reconstructability Analysis: Theory And Applications [Editorial Introduction], Martin Zwick, Guangfu Shu, Yi Lin
Reconstructability Analysis: Theory And Applications [Editorial Introduction], Martin Zwick, Guangfu Shu, Yi Lin
Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations
Reconstructability analysis (RA) dates back to the pioneering work of Ashby in the mid-1960s. In the 1970s and 1980s, RA was the subject of very active research in the systems community. It receded for a time as a focus of activity, but the special issue of the International Journal of General Systems in 1996 on the General Systems Problem Solver and the special IJGS issue in 2000 on Reconstructability Analysis in China marked the renewal of interest in this area. The current volume is part of this resurgence of activity. It collects together papers from the group at Portland State …
Community Health Centers: Health Care As It Could Be, Juniper Lesnik
Community Health Centers: Health Care As It Could Be, Juniper Lesnik
Journal of Law and Health
This article explores the potential of community health centers (CHCs) to become a central component providing health care in America. It focuses on health centers as a proposed solution to the dual national problems of access to care and the shortage of primary care doctoring. It argues that CHCs have the capacity to address the problem of access to health services and to provide a vibrant model for the revival of primary care. Part I deals with the history, structure, current scope, and funding of CHCs. Part II looks at national health care goals and how CHCs are uniquely poised …

A Software Architecture For Reconstructability Analysis, Kenneth Willett, Martin Zwick
A Software Architecture For Reconstructability Analysis, Kenneth Willett, Martin Zwick
Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations
Software packages for reconstructability analysis (RA), as well as for related log linear modeling, generally provide a fixed set of functions. Such packages are suitable for end‐users applying RA in various domains, but do not provide a platform for research into the RA methods themselves. A new software system, Occam3, is being developed which is intended to address three goals which often conflict with one another to provide: a general and flexible infrastructure for experimentation with RA methods and algorithms; an easily‐configured system allowing methods to be combined in novel ways, without requiring deep software expertise; and a system which …

Assessing Craftsmanship At Early Design In Product Development, Philip N. Miller
Assessing Craftsmanship At Early Design In Product Development, Philip N. Miller
Open Access Dissertations
Consumers now more than ever demand products with the highest quality possible. Often this demand for quality is expressed in craftsmanship. Craftsmanship was originally referred to as the quality of goods produced by the craftsman. Some view craftsmanship as a design issue while others emphasizes inspection and individual workmanship. Currently, most companies do not understand the role of craftsmanship in their products and need to be able to assess the craftsmanship of a product and choose the best from a number of competing designs at early stages of development. This dissertation first explored the relationship between a product's craftsmanship and …

Santa Clara Pueblo V. Martinez: Twenty-Five Years Of Disparate Cultural Visions An Essay Introducing The Case For Re-Argument Before The American Indian Nations Supreme Court, Gloria Valencia-Weber
Faculty Scholarship
Santa Clara Pueblo v. Martinez nakedly presents a conflict between the individual rights norm of equality and the communal or collective political right of the first sovereigns within U.S. borders. The conflict underlies the discourse in law scholarship and reflects disparate cultural visions between mainstream society and American Indians. In Indian law the decision has saliency with positive and negative force injected into different arenas besides equal protection, gender, and membership qualifications. It is a major fortification for the federally recognized tribal sovereigns to exclude external law and forums, the federal law and courts, in how tribes exercise self-government. The …
