Data was collected from 30 student teachers assigned to urban elementary field placements following a six-week structured journaling activity. Well-Structured Texts Help Second-Year German Students Learn To Narrate, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy Apr 2004

Well-Structured Texts Help Second-Year German Students Learn To Narrate, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

The past twenty years have seen a significant paradigm shift in foreign language pedagogy from measuring language achievement (based on a defined and finite curriculum, such as a textbook chapter or a grammar lesson) to measuring proficiency (general competence in the foreign language independent of a defined curriculum). Building on the work done previously in language testing by government language schools, the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines (1986) sought to reach consensus about describing and measuring language abilities. These Guidelines give generalized descriptions of abilities at four levels of proficiency (Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, Superior). With the widespread recognition of these Guidelines have …

Dialect Density And Discourse Maturity Of African American Elementary Students, Brandi Lynette Newkirk Apr 2004

Dialect Density And Discourse Maturity Of African American Elementary Students, Brandi Lynette Newkirk

Masters Theses

This was a report of an investigation of the effects of dialectal features in African American students' narratives on discourse ratings by trained judges. The question addressed in this research was whether dialectal features influence judges who are evaluating discourse. Graduate students in speech-language pathology (n = 18) learning to analyze discourse samples served as the judges. Two versions of narratives (n = 27) written by third- and fourth-grade African American students (the original version and the edited version) were used to determine if narratives that contain dialectal features would be rated lower. The judges were trained in narrative discourse …

The Obituary Index Project: A Collaborative Gateway To Local History, Gerald F. Patout Jr. Apr 2004

The Obituary Index Project: A Collaborative Gateway To Local History, Gerald F. Patout Jr.

The Southeastern Librarian

Genealogists and local historians are converging on libraries and information repositories in record numbers, armed with questions and determined to locate answers buried in the documentary annals of the past. This crusade is sometimes met with the same confounding and perplexing problems that challenge library genealogy and local history professionals - a proliferation of information resources, the questionable accuracy and validity of certain sources and the daunting and repetitive task of instructing end users in meaningful inquiry and research. In response to these changes, the New Orleans Public Library (NOPL) and The Historic New Orleans Collection (THNOC) are collaborating on …

Monuments To A Lost Nation, Theodore Karamanski Apr 2004

Monuments To A Lost Nation, Theodore Karamanski

History: Faculty Publications and Other Works

With the bright orange glow of the setting sun at their backs, the chiefs and headmen of the Potawatomi people faced the commissioners of the United States government. Most were grave and morose as they signed the treaty ceding their homelands in the Chicago area and agreeing to removal beyond the Mississippi. The 1833 Treaty of Chicago was one of a series of agreements that terminated the native title to the American heartland and seemed to end Native American presence in the life and culture of Chicago. But a rediscovery of the city's native roots emerged in the late nineteenth …

A War Of Words (In The Hype Of The Palestinian-Israeli Conflict, The Line Between Reality And Propaganda Can Easily Confuse Even The Most Objective Foreign Correspondent), Kenneth Lasson

All Faculty Scholarship

Most journalists look at their work and see professional pride, not personal prejudice. Even many of those who do the biased bidding of their employers could be characterized as decent, fair-minded, hard-working. In the Middle East today, however, where the conflict is still largely a war of words, reporters may often miss the forest for the trees. While such a result could be caused by the inherent limitations of their craft - constant deadlines, sometimes severe space restrictions, the pressure to produce dramatic stories - when their inherent political bias are combined with ignorance of broad historical perspectives, the result …

Using Multimedia To Enhance Reading Skills In Modern Standard Arabic: Strategies To Enhance Reading Skills In Modern Standard Arabic – High Intermediate Level, Kamal Alekhnawy

Archived Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is an attempt to develop a software program designed to enhance reading skills of learners of Modern Standard Arabic at the high intermediate level. This is one of the very few attempts at creating CALL programs for Arabic learning, a medium that is in dire need of development if Arabic language teaching is to keep up with future trends in second language learning as a whole. Research was conducted on how reading skills can best be developed through traditional means as well as on how CALL programs might achieve better and faster results than those traditional means. The …

Temporary Protection As An Instrument For Implementing The Right Of Return For Palestinian Refugees, Susan M. Akram, Terry Rempel Apr 2004

Temporary Protection As An Instrument For Implementing The Right Of Return For Palestinian Refugees, Susan M. Akram, Terry Rempel

Faculty Scholarship

The article argues for an internationally harmonized approach to temporary protection for Palestinian refugees and stateless persons. Temporary protection offers protection rights to this huge population of refugees that they lack in any of the main regions in which they have sought refuge. The article establishes the legal framework for temporary protection in the particular historical, legal and political context of the Palestinian refugee situation. It argues for the urgency of a harmonized rights-based protection regime.

Money That Burns Like Oil: A Sri Lankan Cultural Logic Of Morality And Agency, Michele Ruth Gamburd Apr 2004

Money That Burns Like Oil: A Sri Lankan Cultural Logic Of Morality And Agency, Michele Ruth Gamburd

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

New labor opportunities have drawn Sri Lankan women to work as domestic servants in the Middle East. Many migrants complain that their remittances "burn like oil," disappearing without a trace. The gendered discourse on burning remittances both draws on and contradicts an older cultural system that fetishizes money. The emerging logic provides symbolic resources for women to spend their remittances on advancements for the nuclear family, distancing themselves from other kin. (Migration, remittances, fetishism, Sri Lanka, Middle East)

An Examination Of Relationships Of Reading And Writing Self-Efficacy Beliefs, Standardized Placement Test Scores, And Diverse Community College Students' Perceptions Of Those Relationships, Ann Woolford-Singh

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

Social cognitive theory explains the role that one's level of confidence plays in the accomplishment of a specific task. According to Bandura (1982, 1995), self-efficacy beliefs should align with performance. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships among reading/writing self-efficacy beliefs and reading/writing standardized placement test scores of diverse community college freshmen. Additionally, this study sought to understand the sources of these students' reading/writing self-efficacy beliefs through the descriptions of experiences they feel have influenced those beliefs.

There were three major research questions: (1) What is the strength of the relationships among reading/writing self-efficacy beliefs and reading/writing …

English Theses & Dissertations

In February of 1980, Joe Kohn arrived in my dorm room at Saint Bonaventure University where I was then a freshman. For the next several months we talked about my planned bicycle trip across the United States, recounted his own ride to Brazil, and uncovered dark stories from his three years in Zaire. One night he told me of an idea he had: He planned to canoe the entire length of the Congo River alone. For the following year or so, we mapped routes and studied the dangers. He left in the late fall of 1980, but his anticipated completion …
