Pre-Impact Lower Extremity Posture And Brake Pedal Force Predict Foot And Ankle Forces During An Automobile Collision, Elizabeth C. Hardin, Anne Su, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Background: The purpose of this study was to determine how a driver’s foot and ankle forces during a frontal vehicle collision depend on initial lower extremity posture and brake pedal force. Method of Approach: A 2D musculoskeletal model with seven segments and six right-side muscle groups was used. A simulation of a three-second braking task found 3647 sets of muscle activation levels that resulted in stable braking postures with realistic pedal force. These activation patterns were then used in impact simulations where vehicle deceleration was applied and driver movements and foot and ankle forces were simulated. Peak rearfoot ground reaction …

An Evaluation Of The Components Of An Effectively Functioning E-Logistics System, Douglas Russell Dec 2004

An Evaluation Of The Components Of An Effectively Functioning E-Logistics System, Douglas Russell

Theses (Pre-2016)

E-Iogistics has quickly developed into an integral component of everyday business processes. Although the foundation of logistical processes has been in existence since the bartering system was initially implemented, e-logistics began to evolve within the last few decades. In spite of the rapid implementation of e-logistics, a compilation of its complete components remains nonexistent. This thesis presents a comprehensive overview of the components of an e-logistics system as well as reviews specific corporations utilizing e-logistics, This includes a review of the two types of businesses conducted, business to business (B2B) and business to customer (B2C). The two main methods of …

Selfhood And The Search For An Identity: Explaining The Emergence Of The Nineteenth-Century Holiness Movement And Early Church Of The Nazarene, Paul R. George Jr. Dec 2004

Selfhood And The Search For An Identity: Explaining The Emergence Of The Nineteenth-Century Holiness Movement And Early Church Of The Nazarene, Paul R. George Jr.

Dissertations

This dissertation seeks to explain the emergence of the nineteenth-century Holiness Movement and subsequent organization of a national holiness church asthe result of a reconstruction of the cultural-linguistic system of John Wesley. In the process of contact and exchange with American religious pluralism, Wesley's doctrine of Christian perfection and his system of societies were reconstructed by charismatic leaders who selected discursive and nondiscursive elements which they found efficacious. Theological and social changes in the Methodist Episcopal Church compelled holiness advocates to emphasize theinstantaneous aspect of Wesley's doctrine of Christian perfection (entire sanctification) and construct a ritual form which had the …

Effects Of Nicotine And Anatoxin-A Exposures On The Operant Performance Of Rats, Kimberly Ann Jarema Dec 2004

Effects Of Nicotine And Anatoxin-A Exposures On The Operant Performance Of Rats, Kimberly Ann Jarema

Dissertations

Tolerance has previously been shown to develop to nicotine's effects on operant behavior. This experiment explored whether tolerance would still develop when nicotine administrations were separated by three weeks. Anatoxin-a, a nicotinic-receptor agonist, was also tested and the results were compared to nicotine. Male Long Evans rats performed under a multiple VR30 VI30-sec food-reinforcement schedule. Phase I rats were divided into 6 groups of 8 that received four weekly subcutaneous injections of nicotine (0.0-1.8 mg/kg) and anatoxin-a (0-250 mcg/kg) prior to testing sessions. An ED50 was derived, for each compound, from the VR dose-response curve. Phase II rats were divided …

Journal of Medical Education

Journal of Medical Education

Journal of Medical Education

Measurement Of Handle Forces For Crimping Connectors And Cutting Cable In The Electric Power Industry, Richard W. Marklin, Lia Lazuardi, Jeremy R. Wilzbacher

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Overhead and underground line work in the electric power industry is physically very strenuous and can expose workers to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), particularly in the upper extremity. Crimping compression connectors—such as sleeve connectors and lugs—and cutting cables are two of the most frequent tasks that line workers perform. Line workers at many utilities in the US crimp connectors and cut cable with long-handled manual tools. However, the actual magnitude of the forces applied to the handles of these tools is not known. The objectives of this laboratory study were to measure the forces applied to the handles of a manual …

The study and practice of entrepreneurial finance and its associated relevance for the field of business venturing is now at long last secure in its place in the pantheon of well respected academic and professional disciplines. While initially perhaps thought of as no more than grist for the mill of those involved with personal self-enrichment and beyond the pale of concern with the scholarly dissemination of the world’s accumulated valued wisdom, areas such as the study of venture capital, micro-financing, entrepreneurship management and other related pursuits have now established themselves as well worth the interest of those intimately pursuing serious …

Sources Of Capital And Debt Structure In Small Firms, Chenchuramaiah T. Bathala, Oswald D. Bowlin, William P. Dukes

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

In this paper we examine the relationship between ownership differences and small firms’ financial policies using a survey of U.S. companies. The study finds that financial policies differ according to the type of ownership (private versus public) and by the ownership differences (family-owned, closely-held, or widely-held) within the private firms. The differences are in the ownership concentration, relative importance of various sources of capital, debt characteristics (sources of debt financing, debt maturity, and debt cost). A multiple regression equation estimated in the paper provides evidence relating to cross-sectional variations in debt ratios of small firms. The paper offers information asymmetry, …

Late Payments In Accession Countries: Causes And International Comparison, Janez Prašnikar, Marko Pahor, Andreja Cirman

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

In developed countries in everyday business, payment delays often present a problem. Payment delays have already been a matter of discussion in Slovenia for several years. Irrespective of some positive movements in the past years, the state of payment discipline in Slovenia is not at a satisfactory level. In this area, Slovenia could be classified among the less successful countries when compared to other countries in Europe. Our paper determines factors behind this fact. The findings are important not only for Slovenia, but also for other EU candidate countries faced with similar problems of transition. The paper has led to …

Evaluating Flexibility In Small Firm Financing, Andrey Pavlov, Panikkos Poutziouris, Khaled Soufani Dec 2004

Evaluating Flexibility In Small Firm Financing, Andrey Pavlov, Panikkos Poutziouris, Khaled Soufani

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

The choice of financing source is particularly difficult for a small firm due to the high uncertainty about future liquidity requirements. We show that the techniques of continuous time arbitrage and stochastic control theory may be used not only to value such firms but also to determine the optimal financing policies. In particular, we investigate the choice between liquid, but more expensive, forms of financing and restrictive, but cheaper, sources of capital. In addition to developing an optimal financing policy for a typical firm, we estimate the value of flexibility in a financing arrangement. This, in turn, provides a rational …
