Exchange Rate Depreciation And Exports: The Case Of Singapore Revisited, Wenshwo Fang, Stephen M. Miller Dec 2004

Exchange Rate Depreciation And Exports: The Case Of Singapore Revisited, Wenshwo Fang, Stephen M. Miller

Economics Working Papers

This paper revisits the weak relationship between exchange rate depreciation and exports for Singapore, using a bivariate GARCH-M model that simultaneously estimates time-varying risk. The evidence shows that depreciation does not significantly improve exports, but that exchange rate risk significantly impedes exports. In sum, Singaporean policy makers can better promote export growth by stabilizing the exchange rate rather than generating its depreciation.

Achieving Universal Primary Education: Can Kenya Afford It?, Rob Vos, Arjun Bedi, Paul K. Kimalu, Damiano K. Manda, Nancy N. Nafula, Mwangi S. Kimenyi Dec 2004

Achieving Universal Primary Education: Can Kenya Afford It?, Rob Vos, Arjun Bedi, Paul K. Kimalu, Damiano K. Manda, Nancy N. Nafula, Mwangi S. Kimenyi

Economics Working Papers

Kenya has experienced a rapid expansion of the education system partly due to high government expenditure on education. Despite the high level of expenditure on education, primary school enrolment has been declining since early 1990s and until 2003 when gross primary school enrolment increased to 104 percent after the introduction of free primary education. However, with an estimated net primary school enrolment rate of 77 percent, the country is far from achieving universal primary education. The worrying scenario is that the allocations of resources within the education sector seems to be ineffective as the increasing expenditure on education goes to …

Dominant-Negative Creb Inhibits Heparanase Functionality And Melanoma Cell Invasion, Rebecca Aucoin, Jane Reiland, Madhuchhanda Roy, Dario Marchetti Dec 2004

Dominant-Negative Creb Inhibits Heparanase Functionality And Melanoma Cell Invasion, Rebecca Aucoin, Jane Reiland, Madhuchhanda Roy, Dario Marchetti

Faculty Publications

Heparanase (HPSE-1) is an endo-β-D-glucuronidase involved in the degradation of cell-surface/extracellular matrix heparan sulfate (HS) in normal and neoplastic tissues. HPSE-1 represents the first example of purification and cloning of a mammalian HS-degradative enzyme. Elevated HPSE-1 levels are known to be associated with metastatic cancers, directly implicating HPSE-1 in metastatic events. The purpose of this study was to determine the role of cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) in modulating HPSE-1-mediated effects on human melanoma cell invasion. Highly invasive, brain-metastatic melanoma cells (70W) were transfected with the dominant-negative CREB (KCREB) and subsequently analyzed for changes in their HPSE-1 content, functionality, and …

Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Glycoprotein K And The Ul20 Protein Are Interdependent For Intracellular Trafficking And Trans-Golgi Network Localization, Timothy P. Foster, Jeffrey M. Melancon, Trisha L. Olivier, Konstantin G. Kousoulas Dec 2004

Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Glycoprotein K And The Ul20 Protein Are Interdependent For Intracellular Trafficking And Trans-Golgi Network Localization, Timothy P. Foster, Jeffrey M. Melancon, Trisha L. Olivier, Konstantin G. Kousoulas

Faculty Publications

Final envelopment of the cytoplasmic herpes simplex virus Hype 1 (HSV-1) nucleocapsid is thought to occur by budding into trans-Golgi network (TGN)-derived membranes. The highly membrane-associated proteins UL20p and glycoprotein K (gK) are required for cytoplasmic envelopment at the TGN and virion transport from the TGN to extracellular spaces. Furthermore, the UL20 protein is required for intracellular transport and cell surface expression of gK. Independently expressed gK or UL20p via transient expression in Vero cells failed to be transported from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Similarly, infection of Vero cells with either gK-null or UL20-null viruses resulted in ER entrapment of …

Penny Pricing And The Components Of Spread And Depth Changes, David K. Ding, K.H. Chuang, C. Chearoenwong

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Recent studies show that decimal pricing led to significant reductions in the spread and depth on the NYSE. In this paper, we examine how the observed changes in the spread and depth can be attributed to different factors. We show that stocks with higher proportions of one-tick spreads and odd-sixteenth quotes, and more frequent trading before decimalization experienced larger declines in the spread and depth afterwards. We interpret this result as evidence of reduced binding constraints and increased price competition under decimal pricing. We also find that decimal pricing led to nontrivial changes in select stock attributes, and that these …

Development Of New Protocols To Evaluate The Transverse Loading Of Mine Ventilation Stoppings, Thomas M. Barczak Dec 2004

Development Of New Protocols To Evaluate The Transverse Loading Of Mine Ventilation Stoppings, Thomas M. Barczak

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The transverse loading requirement for stoppings as specified in the current Code of Federal Regulations is 39 psf. This measure is based on physical testing of a freestanding wall in accordance with ASTM E 72 specifications, where the dominant parameter is the tensile strength of the sealant. A new protocol based on rigid arching is proposed to determine the true transverse load capacity of stoppings. Arching is achieved by the restraint of the stopping against the mine roof and floor, whereby compressive forces are developed within the wall. A laboratory procedure using the NIOSH Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) to simulate …

The Effectiveness Of Personal Data Assistants In Improving Daily Function Of Adults With Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, Connie Lee Budiwarman

Masters Theses

This study evaluated the effectiveness of using Personal Data Assistants to help with memory and/or organizational difficulties with adult patients who had survived mild Traumatic Brain Injury. Utilizing an AB single subject design method with a training period, one subject ultimately completed the study. The study demonstrated mixed results. Through the use of daily record sheets, the subject reported improvement in three areas of daily function but reported negative improvement in three areas of daily function. This study suggests, but does not completely support, the potential use of Personal Data Assistants with patients with Traumatic Brain Injury.

Juju And Justice At The Movies: Vigilantes In Nigerian Popular Videos, John C. Mccall Dec 2004

Juju And Justice At The Movies: Vigilantes In Nigerian Popular Videos, John C. Mccall

Publications

This article examines the rise of vigilantism in southeastern Nigeria. Two opposing discourses on Nigerian vigilantism are examined. The first is characterized by the valorization of vigilantes as heroes in popular Nigerian video movies. The second is represented by a recent Human Rights Watch (HRW) report denouncing the vigilantes as criminals. My research utilizes ethnographic research to contextualize the video movies as a means toward understanding the ideological gap between these discourses. A close analysis of the Issakaba video series reveals a subtle treatment of the vigilante phenomenon designed to appeal to an indigenous perspective that is cognizant of the …

What Would Newman Do? John Cardinal Newman And Ex Corde Ecclesiae, Stephen J. Denig Dec 2004

What Would Newman Do? John Cardinal Newman And Ex Corde Ecclesiae, Stephen J. Denig

Journal of Catholic Education

John Paul II’s 1990 Apostolic exhortation Ex Corde Ecclesiae and subsequent legislation require those teaching theological disciplines in Catholic Universities to have a mandatum. This article explores the thought of John Cardinal Newman with a view to defending a position, consistent with Newman’s thought, relative to the seeking and acceptance of a mandatum.

Hiring And Retaining High-Quality Teachers: What Principals Can Do, Roseanne L. Williby Dec 2004

Hiring And Retaining High-Quality Teachers: What Principals Can Do, Roseanne L. Williby

Journal of Catholic Education

Many Catholic school principals have limited assistance from their respective central offices in the recruitment and selection of teachers, especially if their objective is to recruit candidates of color or candidates for a particular subject area. Aware that teacher quality is related to student achievement, Catholic school principals must employ up-to-date, effective recruitment and hiring strategies to compete for qualified candidates in today’s market. Mindful that teacher recruitment programs alone will not solve staffing problems, principals must remain vigilant for causes of low retention and strategize to retain their high-quality teachers. Implementing an intensive induction and mentoring program with expert …

Faculty Publications

We report on the optical spectroscopy of the eclipsing halo low-mass X-ray binary 2S 0921 - 630, which reveals the absorption-line radial velocity curve of the K0 III secondary star with a semiamplitude K2 = 92.89 ± 3.84 km s-1, a systemic velocity γ = 34.9 ± 3. 3 km s-1, and an orbital period Porb of 9.0035 ± 0.0029 days (1 σ). Given the quality of the data, we find no evidence for the effects of X-ray irradiation. Using the previously determined rotational broadening of the mass donor and applying conservative limits on the orbital inclination, we constrain the …

Ultraviolet Extinction Properties In The Milky Way, Lynne A. Valencic, Geoffrey C. Clayton, Karl D. Gordon

Faculty Publications

We have assembled a homogeneous database of 417 ultraviolet (UV) extinction curves for reddened sight lines having International Ultraviolet Explorer spectra. We have combined these with optical and Two Micron All Sky Survey photometry, allowing estimates of the ratio of total-to-selective extinction, RV, for the entire sample. Fitzpatrick-Massa (FM) parameters have also been found for the entire sample. This is the largest study of parameterized UV extinction curves yet published, and it covers a wide range of environments, from dense molecular clouds to the diffuse interstellar medium, with extinctions AV ranging from 0.50 to 4.80. It is the first to …

'You'll Get Nothing Out Of It'? The Inquest, Police And Aboriginal Deaths In Colonial Queensland, Mark Finnane, Jonathan Richards

Faculty Publications

Colonisation in Australia entailed the establishment of legal institutions, but very often lagging the extension of the boundaries of settlement. As a common-law institution of ancient lineage the inquest was an important means of exploring reasons for unexplained deaths, even leading to prosecutions. Yet the protections afforded by rule of law institutions were nugatory where they affected Aboriginal people in conflict with settler society, as shown in this study of the many inquiries in which deaths were attributed to the actions of the police in colonial Queensland.

Faculty Publications

A mutation was recovered in the slr0721 gene, which encodes the decarboxylating NADP+-dependent malic enzyme in the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. strain PCC 6803, yielding the mutant 3WEZ. Under continuous light, 3WEZ exhibits poor photoautotrophic growth while growing photoheterotrophically on glucose at rates nearly indistinguishable from wild-type rates. Interestingly, under diurnal light conditions (12 h of light and 12 h of dark), normal photoautotrophic growth of the mutant is completely restored.

On Shioda-Inose Structures Of One-Parameter Families Of K3 Surfaces, Ling Long

Faculty Publications

We develop an algorithm to determine a one-parameter family of elliptic curves associated to a one-parameter family of K3 surfaces with generic Picard number 19 by a Shioda-Inose structure. The family of elliptic curves is determined up to an isomorphism and an isogeny. An application to a generalized congruence number problem is also discussed. © 2004 Elsevier Inc. No Black Hole Information Puzzle In A Relational Universe, Rodolfo Gambini, Rafael A. Porto, Jorge Pullin Dec 2004

No Black Hole Information Puzzle In A Relational Universe, Rodolfo Gambini, Rafael A. Porto, Jorge Pullin

Faculty Publications

The introduction of a relational time in quantum gravity naturally implies that pure quantum states evolve into mixed quantum states. We show, using a recently proposed concrete implementation, that the rate at which pure states naturally evolve into mixed ones is faster than that due to collapsing into a black hole that later evaporates. This is rather remarkable since the fundamental mechanism for decoherence is usually very weak. Therefore the "black hole information puzzle" is rendered de-facto unobservable. © World Scientific Publishing Company.
