The Battle For The University: The Vietnam-Era Student Movement At Universities In Central Illinois, David Bell Jan 2004

The Battle For The University: The Vietnam-Era Student Movement At Universities In Central Illinois, David Bell

Masters Theses

America in the 1960s ran the gamut of social, economic, and political changes, from the assassination of political leaders to the apocalyptic potential of the Cuban Missile Crisis; from President Lyndon B. Johnson's promises of a Great Society, to the paralyzing effects of the Vietnam War. At the center of these domestic and international battles lay the "baby boomers," the largest-ever generation of Americans, and, not coincidentally, the largest generation of college students to enter the "ivory towers" of higher education. Raised in an era defined by cries for civil rights and "participatory democracy," these youths entered higher education determined …

The Strange New World In The Church: A Review Essay Of 'With The Grain Of The Universe' By Stanley Hauerwas, Brad Kallenberg Jan 2004

The Strange New World In The Church: A Review Essay Of 'With The Grain Of The Universe' By Stanley Hauerwas, Brad Kallenberg

Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

Hauerwas's refusal to translate the argument displayed in With the Grain of the Universe (his recent Gifford Lectures) into language that "anyone" can understand is itself part of the argument. Consequently, readers will not understand what Hauerwas is up to until they have attained fluency in the peculiar language that has epitomized three decades of Hauerwas's scholarship. Such fluency is not easily gained. Nevertheless, in this review essay, I situate Hauerwas's baffling language against the backdrop of his corpus to show at least this much: With the Grain of the Universe transforms natural theology into "witness." In the end, my …

Keeping The City Totally Clean: Yellow Fever And The Politics Of Prevention In Colonial Saint-Louis-Du-Senegal, 1850-1914, Kalala J. Ngalamulume

History Faculty Research and Scholarship

This article explores the ways in which French colonial authorities met the life and death challenge. represented by the re-emergence of yellow fever epidemics in Saint-Louis-du-Senegal at a time when physicians knew very. little about the etiology, diagnosis, transmission and treatment of most infectious and parasitic diseases. The discussion focuses on changing strategies and policies designed to address yellow fever threats, the attitudes and priorities of the authorities, the limits of 'colonial medicine' and the responses of. people affected by sanitary measures. The article argues that because of the ignorance of the etiology and epidemiology of yellow fever, policies were …

Dissent, Posner-Style: Judge Richard A. Posner's First Decade Of Dissenting Opinions, 1981-1991 - Toward An Aesthetics Of Judicial Dissenting Style, Robert F. Blomquist

Missouri Law Review

The threefold purpose and structure of this Article is as follows. First, in Part II, before plunging into Judge Posner’s dissenting opinions, I search for a preliminary description of the praxis of modern American dissenting opinion style by drawing upon previous legal scholarship and examples of judicial dissents; this discussion will include an examination of some relevant scholarly writings on opinion style by Judge Rischard A. Posner himself. In Part III, I analyze the published dissenting opinions written by Judge Posner during 1981-1991, evaluating the stylistics of these dissents including his sophisticated use of rhetorical devises. Finally, in Part IV …

Post-Conciliar Models Of Sin And Reconciliation: Towards A Contemporary Paradigm, James Cross Jan 2004

Post-Conciliar Models Of Sin And Reconciliation: Towards A Contemporary Paradigm, James Cross

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The central proposal of this dissertation is that now, in the wake of the Second Vatican Council (1962-5), official Roman Catholic teaching on sin and sacramental reconciliation is not, but ought to be, based upon a contemporary paradigm of sin and reconciliation--i.e. a paradigm which is concordant with, and adequate in light of, the teachings and goals of this Council. According to the author, an existing "liturgical-narrational" model of sin and reconciliation ought to be elevated to the status of such a paradigm or supermodel.

The author arrives at this conclusion after examining two critical post-Conciliar documents--the revised Rite of …

The Role Of Political Behavior And Socio-Economic Development In The Transition And Consolidation Of Liberal Democracy In Sub Saharan Africa, Godfrey Wachira Jan 2004

The Role Of Political Behavior And Socio-Economic Development In The Transition And Consolidation Of Liberal Democracy In Sub Saharan Africa, Godfrey Wachira

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The study utilizes the multivariate regression techniques to investigate the role of political behavior; power structure (at the micro level) and socio economic development (macro level) in the transition and consolidation of democracy in Sub Saharan Africa. In the analysis, political behavior, defined as the acceptance of political elites to accommodate divergent views, is the most significant predictor of democracy in the region. Socio economic development is a necessary but not sufficient condition for the consolidation of democracy in the region. In conclusion, I argue that Sub Saharan African nations must pursue both political and economic liberalization which entails the …

The Tangled Web Of Diversity And Democracy, George J. Sanchez Jan 2004

The Tangled Web Of Diversity And Democracy, George J. Sanchez

Imagining America

George J. Sanchez, professor of History and American Studies and Ethnicity, University of Southern California, sets forth an important argument about the two pathways to democracy in U.S. higher education: first, engagement by the university through connections of faculty, staff, and students with specific communities and publics; and second, access to the university for members of all communities and publics through inclusive admissions and hiring policies. He challenges our understanding of how engagement and diversity are connected—and how, increasingly, they are becoming disconnected.

The responses of Maria Eugenia Cotera, assistant professor of Latino Studies, Program in American Culture and assistant …

Welfare Law, Welfare Fraud And The Moral Regulation Of The 'Never Deserving' Poor, Shelley A. M. Gavigan, Dorothy E. Chunn Jan 2004

Welfare Law, Welfare Fraud And The Moral Regulation Of The 'Never Deserving' Poor, Shelley A. M. Gavigan, Dorothy E. Chunn

Articles & Book Chapters

The dismantling and restructuring of Keynesian social security programmes have impacted disproportionately on women, especially lone parent mothers, and shifted public discourse and social images from welfare fraud to welfare as fraud, thereby linking poverty, welfare and crime. This article analyzes the current, inordinate focus on 'welfare cheats'. The criminalization of poverty raises theoretical and empirical questions related to regulation, control, and the relationship between them at particular historical moments. Moral regulation scholars working within post-structuralist and post-modern frameworks have developed an influential approach to these issues, however, we situate ourselves in a different stream of critical socio-legal studies that takes …

Popular Music As A Pedagogical Resource For Musicianship - Contextual Listening, Prolongations, Mediant Relationships, And Musical Form, Stuart Folse Jan 2004

Popular Music As A Pedagogical Resource For Musicianship - Contextual Listening, Prolongations, Mediant Relationships, And Musical Form, Stuart Folse

Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy

Recent trends in music scholarship have emphasized the importance of popular music through in-depth analyses and historical studies. Those of us who were brought up in households where this genre was the dominant musical presence have long been aware of its emotional power and pedagogical usefulness. Indeed, given the amount of time our students spend engaged with this music, it should be brought into the classroom and accorded the serious consideration it deserves. Popular music can provide teachers of undergraduate musicianship courses with an endless supply of pedagogically relevant examples that make lasting impressions on our students.

Music Theory And The Liberal Arts, Theodore K. Matthews Jan 2004

Music Theory And The Liberal Arts, Theodore K. Matthews

Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy

Music theory, as an academic discipline, exists in distinctly different environments at liberal arts institutions and schools of music. This study attempts to profile both kinds of institutions in order to compare how their different environments may affect the teaching of music theory. The study focuses primarily on music theory programs in small private liberal arts colleges insofar as the study began, partly, as an attempt to explore the readiness of their graduates to compete with graduates of conservatories either in graduate programs or in other professional pursuits. While music theory programs remain the primary topic, the study also examines …

The Figuration Of Caliban In The Constellation Of Postcolonial Theory, Paulus Sarwoto Jan 2004

The Figuration Of Caliban In The Constellation Of Postcolonial Theory, Paulus Sarwoto

LSU Master's Theses

The surrogation of Caliban from Shakespeare’s The Tempest to Césaire’s A Tempest has always been related to colonialism. In Shakespeare’s time, Caliban, depicted as half animal, served to represent the Other in an emerging colonial discourse. As opposed to Shakespeare’s character, Césaire’s Caliban is blatantly black and racially oppressed. Césaire indicates that A Tempest is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Tempest for black theater. As an adaptation, the play reinterprets the figure of Caliban to express postcolonial attitudes of the time. This thesis addresses the questions of how the figure of Caliban in Shakespeare’s play fits into the discourse of …

Martin Heidegger, Emmanuel Levinas, And The Politics Of Dwelling, David James Gauthier Jan 2004

Martin Heidegger, Emmanuel Levinas, And The Politics Of Dwelling, David James Gauthier

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The late modern and postmodern theme of homecoming permeates the philosophy of Martin Heidegger, who grapples with the topic throughout the various phases of his lifelong meditation on Being. Heidegger continually gave thought to the relationship between Being and the place or site in which it becomes manifest, whether it is a system of references and manipulable entities (Being and Time), language (An Introduction to Metaphysics), or aesthetic works of art (“The Origin of the Work of Art”). Taking as its point of departure Heidegger’s persistent and dynamic search for home (Heimat), this study will examine the political implications of …

Development Of Outdoor Educational Landscapes In Forested Wetlands Of Louisiana's Atchafalaya Basin, Margaret Ann Mcclain Jan 2004

Development Of Outdoor Educational Landscapes In Forested Wetlands Of Louisiana's Atchafalaya Basin, Margaret Ann Mcclain

LSU Master's Theses

Natural landscapes, formed by eons of plant succession, are changing or disappearing as a result of rapid urban development and industrial growth. In addition, the human population explosion pressures are being applied to alter the urban/wildland interface in the United States and throughout the world. Many of Louisiana wetlands are subjected to these pressures and have caused change and loss in forested wetland areas. Most of the Mississippi River Delta consists of wetlands in a state of transition to either open water or degraded hardwood forest due to the effects of several key factors. Being a native of south Louisiana, …

Did White House Reporters Defer To The President After September 11?, Jodi Kathleen Bannerman Jan 2004

Did White House Reporters Defer To The President After September 11?, Jodi Kathleen Bannerman

LSU Master's Theses

This study's primary focus is to determine if the White House press corps acted more deferential to President Bush and his agenda after September 11, 2001, and if so, to see how long the period of decreased adversarial relations lasted. This purpose is accomplished through a content analysis of 37 White House press briefings, conducted by then White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer, examining press-briefing questions three months before, on, directly following, and three months after September 11 according to four dimensions of adversarial relations: initiative, directness, assertiveness, and hostility. Ten question design features comprise the criteria to measure each …

Not Separate But Still Unequal: Disparities, Invisibility And Bias In Access And Quality Of Health Care In Michigan, Kelly Kammeraad

McNair Scholars Journal

Current research points to race and ethnicity as predictive of disparities in access and quality of health care. A 2002 Institute of Medicine Study found that African-American patients tend not to receive the same type of care as White patients, even when controlling for socioeconomic status. Self-reported perceptions of racial bias within the patient provider relationship, from the patient’s perspective, are analyzed to uncover the subtle ways perceptions of differential treatment based on racial bias work to create barriers or perpetuate disparities in health outcomes for African-American breast cancer survivors in Michigan.
