The Relationship Between Agnors And Pcna Indices, Histopathological Appearance And Clinical Factors, As Prognostic Factor For Canine Oral Melanoma, Anudep Rungsipipat, Siriwalee Ngow, Nipaporn Pattanathaiyanom, Nipaporn Pattanathaiyanom, Porntipa Lertrattanachaikul, Khanchit Pongpech, Chanin Kulprawit

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The purpose of this research was to evaluate the relationship between histopathological appearance and clinical data, Argyrophilic Nucleolar Organizer Regions (AgNORs) and Proliferative Cell Nuclear Antigen (PCNA) indices in canine oral melanoma. A retrospective study was performed on biopsy specimens from 67 dogs submitted over the year 2000 to 2003 to the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Chulalongkorn University. Our results showed that the average AgNORs index did not show any significant differences with histopathological characteristics and Masson-Fontana Silver (MFS) stain but the AgNORs index showed significant differences when compared with histological grading and tumor diameter size (p < 0.05). The average PCNA index did not show significant differences with histopathological characteristics, grading, and MFS stain but did not show significant differences with the sex of affected dogs and tumor diameter size (p < 0.05). AgNORs and PCNA indices might be useful as a prognostic factor for oral melanoma in dogs

The Expression Of C-Erbb2 Oncogene Protein As A Prognostic Factor In Feline Mammary Tumors, Mataya Taweechart, On-Uma Sirayayon, Grisnarong Wongbandue, Supradit Wangnaitham, Achariya Sailasuta, Sudson Sirividhayapong, Anudep Rungsipipat Dec 2004

The Expression Of C-Erbb2 Oncogene Protein As A Prognostic Factor In Feline Mammary Tumors, Mataya Taweechart, On-Uma Sirayayon, Grisnarong Wongbandue, Supradit Wangnaitham, Achariya Sailasuta, Sudson Sirividhayapong, Anudep Rungsipipat

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The study looked at the relationship between the expression of c-erbB2 oncogene protein, histological types, PCNA and AgNORs indices, in feline mammary tumors. Sixty, surgically resected, mammary tumors from cats were collected and histological processed. The expression of c-erbB2 oncogene protein was detected by immunohistochemistry and was seen in benign hyperplasia, adenosis and malignant groups. The c-erbB2 oncogene protein expression in malignant, feline mammary tumors was 41.67% (25/60) which could be divided into simple tubular ACC, 25% (6/24), simple papillary ACC, 78.6% (11/14), solid carcinoma, 26.7% (4/15) and cribiform carcinoma, 57.14% (4/7). There were statistically significantly differences (p<0.05) in the expression of c-erbB2 oncogene protein between simple tubular ACC, compared with simple papillary ACC and solid carcinomas. The expression of c-erbB2 oncogene protein in specimens, classified by histological malignancy grades revealed, grade I, 42.11% and grade II, 41.46% but there was no statistically significant difference between them. An evaluation of a proliferative marker shown by a mean (±SD) of PCNA, was 34.63±23.87 and the mean (±SD) of AgNORs was 1.23±0.18. There was no significant difference between the PCNA and AgNORs index of both the histological types and the histological malignancy grades. However, a statistical difference of mean PCNA and AgNORs indices was noted in both c-erbB2 positive and c-erbB2 negative groups. The mean PCNA indices and AgNORs indices in c-erbB2 positive samples were 26.52±18.68 and 1.12±0.27 respectively, while the c-erbB2 negative ones were 39.43±26.24 and 1.28±0.19 respectively. In conclusion, c-erbB2 oncogene protein expression is considered to be an effective prognostic factor for adenocarcinoma subtypes of feline mammary tumors as it is in human and canine cases. However, integration of all the parameters (c-erbB2 oncogene protein, PCNA index, AgNORs index, histological types and clinical data) may achieve a more precise prognosis in feline, mammary tumor cases.

The Defined Contribution Paradigm, Edward A. Zelinsky Dec 2004

The Defined Contribution Paradigm, Edward A. Zelinsky

Articles

Pension cognoscenti have frequently remarked on the stagnation of defined benefit pensions and the concomitant rise of defined contribution plans. I suggest that, over the last generation, something even more fundamental has occurred, something that can justly be called a paradigm shift. Americans today primarily conceive of and implement retirement savings in the form of individual accounts. Such accounts have become primary instruments of public policy, not just for retirement savings, but increasingly for health care and education as well.

Satirical Legal Studies: From The Legists To The Lizard, Peter Goodrich

Articles

Satirical legal studies utilize humor and ridicule to critique the pretensions and follies of the legal profession and academia, transcending traditional boundaries and challenging established hierarchies. By blending satire with legal critique, this genre exposes the social and political dimensions of law, advocating for inclusivity and radical change. Despite facing backlash, satire remains a vital tool in legal discourse, offering fresh perspectives and engaging forms that keep legal studies dynamic and relevant.

A survey of abomasal parasites in cervids from Central Spain was conducted at three sites, Quintos de Mora (Toledo), Maluéñez de Arriba (Cáceres), and La Herguijuela (Cáceres). Commonly occurring helminths belonged to three polymorphic species of the Ostertagiinae: Spiculopteragia asymmetrica/S. quadrispiculata, Ostertagia leptospicularis/O. kolchida, and O. drozdzi/O. ryjikovi. Trichostrongylus axei was found in very few cases. Ostertagia drozdzi/O. ryjikovi and the minor male morphotype, S. quadrispiculata, are reported for the first time in red deer from Spain. The three ostertagiine species are also reported for the first time …

Examining Restricted And Repetitive Behavior In Children With Autism: A Descriptive Study, Dawn Deann Detweiler

Masters Theses

This exploratory study examined the specific topographies and corresponding demographic information of restricted, repetitive and stereotyped behaviors, interests and activities of children with autism, and evaluated developmental differences between age groups. Previous literature has largely neglected this core feature of autism despite the need, and frequent call for such foundational data (Bodfish et al., 2000; Kennedy et al., 2000; Mercier et al., 2000; Turner, 1999). Participants included primary caregivers of 104 children who met DSM-IV-TR criteria for autism (American Psychiatric Association, 2000) and ranged in age from 3 to 7 years (M = 4. 7). The behaviors reported as occurring …

Manufacturing And Evaluation Of Structural Products With Recycled Polymers, Raghuram Phani Aditham

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The rapid growth of Wastes from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) can be attributed to the rapid developments in technology, leading to reduction in service life to less than 2 years in certain products. Thermoplastics such as Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) and Polycarbonate (PC) form a significant percent of the Electronic Shredder Residue (ESR) that were used in this research to manufacture and evaluate structural products with recycled polymers.;In this research, offset blocks for highway and bridge guardrail systems were developed using recycled polymers reinforced with glass fabric as shell and discarded tire strips/wood as core materials. Optimum compression molding process parameters …

Three Essays On Public Economics And Public Finance, Yousam Choi Dec 2004

Three Essays On Public Economics And Public Finance, Yousam Choi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In the first essay, we examine the conditions under which the regulatory process leads to collusion, and if there is collusion, whether it will be observed in the political or bureaucratic sector. The political cost disciplines the politician, while monitoring intensity limits the bureaucrat's discretion. According to our model, high political pressure is critical to achieve a state with no collusion between agents. If the political cost is relatively small, higher penalties on the bureaucrat will just open the possibility of political corruption. In a politician's initiative regime, if the transfer offered to the politician in exchange for legislative effort …

Intraindividual Variability And Relations Between Daily Affect And Physical Activity Among Community -Dwelling Older Women, Jenessa C. Steele

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The current study investigated individual and group-level daily relations between affect and physical activity among 37 non-sedentary community-dwelling older women. The study expected that (a) positive affect would hold a significant, positive synchronous relation with physical activity and (b) negative affect would hold a significant, negative synchronous relation with physical activity over six consecutive days. Women over age 55 (M = 71.5, SD = 9.4) participated by completing four daily assessments (8am, 12pm, 4pm, 8pm) of positive and negative affect and physical activity on a hand-held computer Monday through Saturday. Affect was measured using the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule …

"My city was desirous of suing the county for violating the city's zoning ordinance .... As City Attorney, I was requested to research the matter and give an opinion to the Mayor and Council .... After giving my opinion that a suit against the county would be contrary to law and might subject the city (and its lawyer) to attorney's fees, the [Mlayor and [Clouncil voted unanimously to sue the county. The local newspaper's headlines read, 'City Votes Unanimously To Sue County Against Advice of City Attorney!' One of the Council members was quoted as saying, 'regardless of the law, …

Administrative Law, Martin M. Wilson

Mercer Law Review

This Article surveys the Georgia Supreme Court and Georgia Court of Appeals administrative law cases from June 1, 2003 through May 31, 2004. Over two dozen pertinent cases were decided during the survey period, many of them containing highly novel elements. The novelty of certain facets of the cases only stands to reason, as all levels of government continue to increase reliance upon administrative agencies to perform necessary functions. The regulatory framework imposed by these agencies never fills in all the blanks regarding those functions. The unanswered questions invariably invite appellate court decisionmaking.

No attempt has been made in this …

Do Policy-Makers Earmark To Constrain Their Successors? The Case Of Environmental Earmarking, Neva Novarro Dec 2004

Do Policy-Makers Earmark To Constrain Their Successors? The Case Of Environmental Earmarking, Neva Novarro

Economics Department Working Papers

This paper examines whether legislators earmark funds in order to constrain the spending of future legislators with different preferences. Specifically, panel data is used to estimate the probability a new environmental earmarking law is passed as a function of Democrats holding and subsequently losing majority control of the government. The results of this study do not support this hypothesis. In fact, Democrats with a large majority who subsequently lose this majority power following the next election are found to be less likely to earmark funds for the environment. One possible explanation for this finding may be that competing forces make …

"Curiously Uninvolved": Social Work And Protest Against The War In Vietnam, Susan Kerr Chandler Dec 2004

"Curiously Uninvolved": Social Work And Protest Against The War In Vietnam, Susan Kerr Chandler

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This article reviews four leading social work journals from 1965-1975 for content on the War in Vietnam and the social issues arising from it. It finds that social work's major journals carried nearly no articles, letters, editorials, or short subjects related to the war and concludes that the dominant discourse constructed in the journals excluded meaningful engagement with the war or protest against it.
