A Decision Support Tool For Accepting Or Rejecting Donations In Humanitarian Relief Organizations, Francisco Javier Ruiz-Brand Jun 2004

A Decision Support Tool For Accepting Or Rejecting Donations In Humanitarian Relief Organizations, Francisco Javier Ruiz-Brand

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

With the increase in the occurrence of disasters (natural and man-made) that leave people injured, handicapped or dead, the disaster management theory is gaining more importance. As a consequence, human assistance and disaster relief organizations are managing increasingly more inventories anticipated to help people in need. Donations are the common means used by humanitarian relief organizations for procuring commodities to support some of their programs. Previous experiences have indicated that donations become a burden instead of offering relief when they do not match actual victims' needs. Accepting or rejecting donations is a key issue that can produce not only economic …

Brain Motion And Deformation During Closed Head Injury In The Presence Of Cerebrospinal Fluid, Charles F. Babbs Jun 2004

Brain Motion And Deformation During Closed Head Injury In The Presence Of Cerebrospinal Fluid, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents a new analysis of the physics of closed head injury following brief, intense acceleration of the head. It focuses upon the buoyancy of the brain in cerebrospinal fluid, which protects against damage, the propagation of strain waves through the brain substance, which causes damage, and the concentration of strain in critical anatomic regions, which magnifies damage. Numerical methods are used to create animations or "movies" of brain motion and deformation. Initially a 1 cm gap filled with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) separates the brain from the skull. Whole head acceleration induces artificial gravity within the skull. The brain …

An Examination Of Perceptions For Family Acculturation, Family Leisure Involvement, And Family Functioning Among Mexican-Americans, Owen D. Christenson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between acculturation and aspects of family functioning (cohesion and adaptability) and family leisure involvement from Mexican-American parent, youth, and family perspectives. Acculturation of parents, youth, and families was measured using the Bidimensional Acculturation Scale for Hispanics (BAS). Family leisure involvement was measured using the Family Leisure Activity Profile (FLAP). Aspects of family functioning were measured using the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scales (FACES II). Sociodemographic variables such as age, gender, generation, family size, income, and education were also used to help predict levels of acculturation for family perspectives. The …

A Study Of George S. Kaufman's Metatheatrics, Nancy Alease Jarrell Jun 2004

A Study Of George S. Kaufman's Metatheatrics, Nancy Alease Jarrell

Theses and Dissertations

Known for his comedic plays, George S. Kaufman became one of the most successful playwrights in American theatre history. Part of his success stems from his metatheatrical writing techniques, which he used by incorporating people from his life into his plays and by writing about the business he experienced first hand. To date, no sources link Kaufman and the metatheatrics of his work. Therefore, this thesis highlights these links and explores how far Kaufman took his metatheatrical viewpoints, why he chose to use this method, and what statements he made by using these techniques. In order to prove this thesis, …

Quantification And Visualization Of Ld Patterns And Identification Of Haplotype Blocks, Yan Wang, Sandrine Dudoit Jun 2004

Quantification And Visualization Of Ld Patterns And Identification Of Haplotype Blocks, Yan Wang, Sandrine Dudoit

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Classical measures of linkage disequilibrium (LD) between two loci, based only on the joint distribution of alleles at these loci, present noisy patterns. In this paper, we propose a new distance-based LD measure, R, which takes into account multilocus haplotypes around the two loci in order to exploit information from neighboring loci. The LD measure R yields a matrix of pairwise distances between markers, based on the correlation between the lengths of shared haplotypes among chromosomes around these markers. Data analysis demonstrates that visualization of LD patterns through the R matrix reveals more deterministic patterns, with much less noise, than …

Caring As Catalyst; A Model For Health Possibilities, Brenda A. Becker Jun 2004

Caring As Catalyst; A Model For Health Possibilities, Brenda A. Becker

Theses and Graduate Projects

This graduate field project presents a conceptual model based on the theoretical frameworks of Brentano, Frankl, Rogers, Merry, Benner, and Wrubel and is designed to facilitate the life journey to more complex levels. The model has a foundation in chaos theory and in the search for meaning. Key concepts of catalyst, presence, polarization, and participation are defined and described. Presence is defined at three levels: physical, psychological, and therapeutic. Participation is defined as a sharing of the life and experience between nurse and person. Polarization, or change in pattern, is also defined at three levels: active, collaborative, and passive. The …

The Ipperwash Inquiry - Symposium On Government/Police Relations: The Idea Of The Political "Independence" Of The Police: International Interpretations And Experiences, Philip Stenning Jun 2004

The Ipperwash Inquiry - Symposium On Government/Police Relations: The Idea Of The Political "Independence" Of The Police: International Interpretations And Experiences, Philip Stenning

Conferences and Workshops

This chapter serves to clarify some of the key concepts. By graphically illustrating the relationship between degrees of ‘control’ and degrees of accountability it is argued that the two concepts are not incompatible. The term independence is then used in the chapter to refer only to decision-making that falls in what is pictured as the fourth quadrant: ‘full accountability’ with ‘no control’. The chapter then outlines the scope or range of the potentially ‘independent’ decision-making tasks.

Stenning discusses the growth of the ‘doctrine of police independence’. It is argued that what we might assume is a widely held value favouring …

Treatment Of Hypertriglyceridemia With Omega-3 Fatty Acids: A Systematic Review, Amanda Gloria Lewis Jun 2004

Treatment Of Hypertriglyceridemia With Omega-3 Fatty Acids: A Systematic Review, Amanda Gloria Lewis

Theses and Dissertations

Purpose: To 1) critically appraise available randomized controlled trials (RTCs) addressing the efficacy of long-chain ω-3 fatty acids as a secondary prevention agent of hypertriglyceridemia, and 2) make recommendations for clinical practice.

Data Sources: All RCTs identified from several databases from 1993-2003 were reviewed by two independent reviewers who extracted data from each study and used the previously tested Boyack and Lookinland Methodological Quality Index (MQI) to determine study quality.

Results: Ten studies reported long-chain ω-3 fatty acids to be effective in the treatment of hypertriglyceridemia. The average decrease in triglycerides (TG) was 29%, total cholesterol (TC) 11.6%, very low …

Efficacy Of Quality Criteria To Identify Potentially Harmful Information: A Cross-Sectional Survey Of Complementary And Alternative Medicine Web Sites, Muhammad Walji, Smitha Sagaram, Deepak Sagaram, Funda Meric-Bernstam, Craig Johnson, Nadeem Q Mirza, Elmer V Bernstam Jun 2004

Efficacy Of Quality Criteria To Identify Potentially Harmful Information: A Cross-Sectional Survey Of Complementary And Alternative Medicine Web Sites, Muhammad Walji, Smitha Sagaram, Deepak Sagaram, Funda Meric-Bernstam, Craig Johnson, Nadeem Q Mirza, Elmer V Bernstam

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BACKGROUND: Many users search the Internet for answers to health questions. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is a particularly common search topic. Because many CAM therapies do not require a clinician's prescription, false or misleading CAM information may be more dangerous than information about traditional therapies. Many quality criteria have been suggested to filter out potentially harmful online health information. However, assessing the accuracy of CAM information is uniquely challenging since CAM is generally not supported by conventional literature. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to determine whether domain-independent technical quality criteria can identify potentially harmful online CAM content. …

Quantitative Methods For Tracking Cognitive Change 3 Years After Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery, Sarah Barry, Scott L. Zeger, Ola A. Selnes, Maura A. Grega, Louis M. Borowicz, Jr., Guy M. Mckhann Jun 2004

Quantitative Methods For Tracking Cognitive Change 3 Years After Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery, Sarah Barry, Scott L. Zeger, Ola A. Selnes, Maura A. Grega, Louis M. Borowicz, Jr., Guy M. Mckhann

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Background: The analysis and interpretation of change in cognitive function test scores after Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG). Longitudinal studies with multiple outcomes present considerable statistical challenges. Application of hierarchical linear statistical models can estimate the effects of a surgical intervention on the time course of multiple biomarkers.

Methods: We use an "analyze then summarize" approach whereby we estimate the intervention effects separately for each cognitive test and then pool them, taking appropriate account of their statistical correlations. The model accounts for dropouts at follow-up, the chance of which may be related to past cognitive score, by implicitly imputing the …

Contributions To Emerging Techniques In Survey Sampling., Sanghamitra Pal Dr.

Doctoral Theses

This dissertation contains seven Chapters. The contents in the respective Chapters may be briefly recounted as follows.A topic of classical interest in survey sampling is how to ensure the existence of a uniformly non-negative (UNN) unbiased estimator for the mean square error (MSE) of a homogeneous linear estimator (HLE) for a finite survey population total. Hájek (1958), Vijayan (1975), Rao and Vijayan (1977) and Rao (1979) developed a number of results which boil down to the folowing as narrated in the monograph by Chaudhuri and Stenger (1992).If there exist non-zero constants w, and the unknown values y, of the variable …
