Is Globalization What It’S Cracked Up To Be? Economic Freedom, Corruption, And Human Development, Syed H. Akhter Aug 2004

Is Globalization What It’S Cracked Up To Be? Economic Freedom, Corruption, And Human Development, Syed H. Akhter

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

This paper examines the effect of economic globalization on human development and argues that the relation between economic globalization and human development is mediated by economic freedom and corruption. Findings suggest that economic globalization affects economic freedom positively and corruption negatively. In turn, economic freedom has a positive effect and corruption has a negative effect on human development. All relations are in the hypothesized directions and significant. Research, business, and public policy implications as well as directions for future research are presented.

Regulating Non-Territorial Commercial Environments In Territorial-Based Legal Systems, Pedro Martin G. Less Andrade

LLM Theses and Essays

The purpose of the following work is the identification and analysis of the legal and technological challenges that transnational electronic commerce carried out over open computermediated networks presents to legal systems based on territorial principles in order to delineate global and systematic solutions to this new non-territorial commercial environment. A possible global, systematic and technologically oriented legal solution will create a new commercial environment safer for consumers, more predictable for businesses and with equal opportunities of access and growth for all countries.

Group Judgments: Deliberation, Statistical Means, And Information Markets, Cass R. Sunstein Aug 2004

Group Judgments: Deliberation, Statistical Means, And Information Markets, Cass R. Sunstein

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

How can groups elicit and aggregate the information held by their individual members? The most obvious answer involves deliberation. For two reasons, however, deliberating groups often fail to make good decisions. First, the statements and acts of some group members convey relevant information, and that information often leads other people not to disclose what they know. Second, social pressures, imposed by some group members, often lead other group members to silence themselves because of fear of disapproval and associated harms. The unfortunate results include the propagation of errors; hidden profiles; cascade effects; and group polarization. A variety of steps should …

Precautions Against What? The Availability Heuristic And Cross-Cultural Risk Perceptions, Cass R. Sunstein Aug 2004

Precautions Against What? The Availability Heuristic And Cross-Cultural Risk Perceptions, Cass R. Sunstein

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Because risks are all on sides of social situations, it is not possible to be globally "precautionary." Hence the Precautionary Principle runs into serious conceptual difficulties; any precautions will themselves create hazards of one or another kind. When the principle gives guidance, it is often because of the availability heuristic, which can make some risks stand out as particularly salient, whatever their actual magnitude. The same heuristic helps to explain differences across groups, cultures, and even nations in the perception of risks, especially when linked with such social processes as cascades and group polarization. One difficulty here is that what …

Corporate Heroin: A Defense Of Perks, James C. Spindler, M. Todd Henderson Aug 2004

Corporate Heroin: A Defense Of Perks, James C. Spindler, M. Todd Henderson

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

We argue that firms undertake to reduce employee savings in order to avoid final period problems that occur when employees accumulate enough wealth to retire and leave the industry. Normally, reputation constrains employee behavior, since an employee who "cheats" at one firm will then find herself unable to get a job at another. However, employees who have saved such that they no longer care about continued employment will act opportunistically in the final periods of employment, which can destroy much or all of the surplus otherwise created by the employment relationship. We believe that this sort of final period cheating …

Cloning And Functional Analysis Of The Putative Tetracycline Resistance Gene Hp1165 In Helicobacter Pylori, Yuhuan Li Aug 2004

Cloning And Functional Analysis Of The Putative Tetracycline Resistance Gene Hp1165 In Helicobacter Pylori, Yuhuan Li

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Tetracycline has been used in combination with other antibiotics in treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection. However, tetracycline resistance has developed in clinical isolates of H. pylori, rendering treatment failure. Mutations in the 16S rRNA gene have been reported to mediate tetracycline resistance in some patient isolates. Nevertheless, the diversity of tetracycline resistance cases suggests multiple genes are involved. HPl 165, a putative tetracycline resistance gene in the genome of H. pylori 26695, displays 49.8% identity to the tetracycline efflux gene tetA (P) from Clostridium perfringens. To determine the function of the HPl 165 gene and gain a better understanding of …

Chinese Adolescents’ Decision-Making, Parent-Adolescent Communication And Relationships, Yan Ruth Xia, Xiaolin Xie, Zhi Zhou, John Defrain, William H. Meredith, Raedene Combs

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

The present study described Mainland Chinese adolescents’ decision-making, and examined the relationship among their decision-making involvement, parent-adolescent communication and relationship variables by using Structural Equation Modeling. Results demonstrated that Chinese parents appeared to be less authoritarian than the prevailing literature had described. Chinese adolescents experienced a passage of autonomy development similar to that of their American counterparts. Good parent-adolescent communication was positively associated with cohesion and negatively associated with conflict. It also mediated the relationship between adolescent age and parent-adolescent conflict. The relationships between parent-adolescent communication and cohesion as well as the relationship between adolescents’ age and decision involvement were …

Hsp27 Anti-Sense Oligonucleotides Sensitize The Microtubular Cytoskeleton Of Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells Grown At Low Ph To 42 Degrees C-Induced Reorganization, Michael T. Hargis, C. W. Storck, Eric Wickstrom, Leonid A. Yakubov, Dennis B. Leeper, Ronald A. Coss

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells maintained in vitro at pH 6.7 were used to model cells in the acidic environment of tumours. CHO cells grown at pH 6.7 develop thermotolerance during 42 degrees C heating at pH 6.7 and their cytoskeletal systems are resistant to 42 degrees C-induced perinuclear collapse. Hsp27 levels are elevated in cells grown at pH 6.7 and are further induced during 42 degrees C heating, while Hsp70 levels remain low or undetectable, suggesting that Hsp27 is responsible for some of the novel characteristics of these cells. An anti-sense oligonucleotide strategy was used to test the importance …

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

The emergence in the United States of resistance to expanded-spectrum cephalosporin (e.g., ceftriaxone) within the salmonellae has been associated primarily with three large (>100-kb) plasmids (designated types A, B, and C) and one 10.1-kb plasmid (type D) that carry the blaCMY-2 gene. In the present study, the distribution of these four known blaCMY-2-carrying plasmids among 35 ceftriaxone-resistant Salmonella isolates obtained from 1998 to 2001 was examined. Twenty-three of these isolates were Salmonella enterica serotype Newport, 10 were Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium, 1 was Salmonella enterica serotype Agona, and 1 was Salmonella enterica serotype Reading. All 23 …
