A humanized mouse bearing the HLA-DR2 (DRA/DRB1*1501) pro- tein associated with multiple sclerosis (MS) and the myelin basic protein (MBP) 85–99-specific HLA-DR2-restricted T cell receptor from an MS patient has been used to examine the effectiveness of modified amino acid copolymers poly(F,Y,A,K)n and poly- (V,W,A,K)n in therapy of MBP 85–99-induced experimental auto-immune encephalomyelitis (EAE) in comparison to Copolymer 1 [Copaxone, poly(Y,E,A,K)n]. The copolymers were designed to optimize binding to HLA-DR2. Vaccination, prevention, and treatment of MBP-induced EAE in the humanized mice with copolymers FYAK and VWAK ameliorated EAE more effectively than Copolymer 1, reduced the number of pathological lesions, and …

A teleportal system which provides remote communication between at least two users. A projective display and video capture system provides video images to the users. The video system obtains and transmits 3D images which are stereoscopic to remote users. The projective display unit provides an augmented reality environment to each user and allows users to view, unobstructed, the other local users, and view a local site in which they are located. A screen transmits to the user the images generated by the projective display via a retro-reflective fabric upon which images are projected and reflected back to the users eyes.

Resolution Of Organelle Docking And Fusion Kinetics In A Cell-Free Assay, Alexey J. Merz, William T. Wickner Aug 2004

Resolution Of Organelle Docking And Fusion Kinetics In A Cell-Free Assay, Alexey J. Merz, William T. Wickner

Dartmouth Scholarship

In vitro assays of compartment mixing have been key tools in the biochemical dissection of organelle docking and fusion. Many such assays measure compartment mixing through the enzymatic modification of reporter proteins. Homotypic fusion of yeast vacuoles is measured with a coupled assay of proteolytic maturation of pro-alkaline phosphatase (pro-ALP). A kinetic lag is observed between the end of docking, marked by the acquisition of resistance to anti-SNARE reagents, and ALP maturation. We therefore asked whether the time taken for pro-ALP maturation adds a kinetic lag to the measured fusion signal. Prb1p promotes ALP maturation; overproduction of Prb1p accelerates ALP …

Small Satellite Conference

The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Space Vehicles Directorate has developed the Deployable Structures Experiment (DSX) to research technologies needed for large space structures and apertures, high-power generation, and survivability in the high radiation environment of a medium earth orbit (MEO). DSX is designed to perform five basic research experiments that coupled together provides DoD with the technological understanding needed to achieve transformational capability in space surveillance, microsats with large aperture and power, active space capability protection from enhanced radiation belts, and radiation-survivability design criteria for satellite systems planned for the highly desirable medium Earth orbit (MEO) regime. The five …

The Russian American Observational Satellites (RAMOS) program represents a new direction for cooperative space-based research and development between the Russian Federation and the United States. The objective of the RAMOS project is to engage in a joint program employing simultaneous stereo-optical techniques from two co-orbiting satellites to address global defense and environmental issues. The satellites are equipped with American- and Russian-made passive electro-optical sensors operating over a spectral range from infrared (IR) to ultraviolet (UV) which can conduct near-simultaneous stereo-optical radiometric, spectrometric, and polarimetric measurements. The defense objectives will demonstrate the capability for improved target observation and reduced “false alarm” …

The Kini Kinesin Kif2a Is Required For Bipolar Spindle Assembly Through A Functional Relationship With Mcak, Neil J. Ganem, Duane A. Compton Aug 2004

The Kini Kinesin Kif2a Is Required For Bipolar Spindle Assembly Through A Functional Relationship With Mcak, Neil J. Ganem, Duane A. Compton

Dartmouth Scholarship

Although the microtubule-depolymerizing KinI motor Kif2a is abundantly expressed in neuronal cells, we now show it localizes to centrosomes and spindle poles during mitosis in cultured cells. RNAi-induced knockdown of Kif2a expression inhibited cell cycle progression because cells assembled monopolar spindles. Bipolar spindle assembly was restored in cells lacking Kif2a by treatments that altered microtubule assembly (nocodazole), eliminated kinetochore–microtubule attachment (loss of Nuf2), or stabilized microtubule plus ends at kinetochores (loss of MCAK). Thus, two KinI motors, MCAK and Kif2a, play distinct roles in mitosis, and MCAK activity at kinetochores must be balanced by Kif2a activity at poles for spindle …

Marriage Moments: An Evaluation Of An Approach To Strengthen Couples' Relationships During The Transition To Parenthood, In The Context Of A Home Visitation Program, Kimberly Ann Rose Lovejoy

Theses and Dissertations

This study evaluates the efficacy of a self-guided, low-intensity curriculum, Marriage Moments, based on Fowers' (2000) virtues model of marital quality that emphasizes friendship, generosity, justice and loyalty. The Marriage Moments program consists of a guidebook and a video that were designed to strengthen marriages during the transition to parenthood and is used in the context of a home visitation program for first-time parents. Participants in the study included 119 married couples who had recently given birth to their first child. They were assigned to either a treatment, comparison or control group. The treatment group received the Marriage Moments curriculum …

Evaluating Work: Enforcing Occupational Safety And Health Standards In The United States, Canada And Sweden, Daniel B. Klaff Aug 2004

Evaluating Work: Enforcing Occupational Safety And Health Standards In The United States, Canada And Sweden, Daniel B. Klaff

ExpressO

The United States’ occupational safety and health enforcement system is breaking down. Klaff argues that much of this breakdown has to do with a fundamental lack of worker participation in the United States’ safety and health system. Klaff makes his case by comparing and contrasting the history and enforcement schemes of the United States, Canada, and Sweden. After arguing for economic rights as human rights, Klaff concludes by offering a set of recommendations for the United States’ occupational safety and health system based upon his value-centered analysis.

Evaluation Of Chromium Mobility In An Electrokinetic Environment, Christopher Michael Fetters Aug 2004

Evaluation Of Chromium Mobility In An Electrokinetic Environment, Christopher Michael Fetters

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to determine the potential effect indigenous ions may have on the effectiveness of electrokinetic remediation of chromium contaminated soils. A synthetic soil matrix was tested in conjunction with four common ion pairs found in soils and ground water. The results of this study indicate that the interaction of the indigenous ions is sufficient to inhibit the effectiveness of the electrokinetic remediation process. The mobility of chromium through the soil was altered in the presence of high concentrations of the indigenous ions. Further study in this area will be required to address the effect of …
