The Caenorhabditis Elegans F-Box Protein Sel-10 Promotes Female Development And May Target Fem-1 And Fem-3 For Degradation By The Proteasome, Sibylle Jager, Hillel T. Schwartz, H. Robert Horvitz, Barbara Conradt

Dartmouth Scholarship

The Caenorhabditis elegans F-box protein SEL-10 and its human homolog have been proposed to regulate LIN-12 Notch signaling by targeting for ubiquitin-mediated proteasomal degradation LIN-12 Notch proteins and SEL-12 PS1 presenilins, the latter of which have been implicated in Alzheimer's disease. We found that sel-10 is the same gene as egl-41, which previously had been defined by gain-of-function mutations that semidominantly cause masculinization of the hermaphrodite soma. Our results demonstrate that mutations causing loss-of-function of sel-10 also have masculinizing activity, indicating that sel-10 functions to promote female development. Genetically, sel-10 acts upstream of the genes fem-1, fem-2, and fem-3 and …

A Multidimensional Assessment Of The Impact Of A Spiritual Growth Campaign (40 Days Of Purpose) On Individual Spiritual Development, Debra K. Burton

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This study evaluated the impact that the 40 Days of Purpose had on personal spiritual development of the participants. The experimental group was comprised of 163 volunteers recruited from three different churches participating in the 40 Days of Purpose. Two of the churches, a Baptist and an Assembly of God are located in a small town in East Texas, while the remaining Baptist church is located in a metropolitan city in North Carolina. The control group consisted of 46 recruited volunteers from a Baptist church that was not participating in the 40 Days of Purpose. Spiritual growth was measured using …

The Benefits And Costs Of City-County Unification: An Analysis Of City Of Albuquerque And Bernalillo County Finances, Lee A. Reynis Aug 2004

The Benefits And Costs Of City-County Unification: An Analysis Of City Of Albuquerque And Bernalillo County Finances, Lee A. Reynis

BBER Publications

The purpose of this report was to answer the question, "what are the costs and benefits of adopting the proposed unification charter?" After certain modifications were made to the research design, the UNM Bureau of Business and Economic Research (BBER) did this study on behalf of the Albuquerque-Bernalillo County Unification Commission. The report is organized into five sections: an in-depth analysis of major tax revenue sources; an examination of services provided to residents and businesses; a consideration of the question of subsidies ("who gets and who pays for services"); an examination of how total government costs may be affected by …

Suburban Sprawl, Jewish Law, And Jewish Values, Michael E. Lewyn Aug 2004

Suburban Sprawl, Jewish Law, And Jewish Values, Michael E. Lewyn

ExpressO

The article explains how automobile-dependent suburban sprawl is in conflict with Jewish law and Jewish values. This is so in three ways. First, Jewish law requires Jews to make the poor self-supporting- but suburban sprawl creates welfare dependency by making it impossible for poor people without cars to reach jobs in auto-dependent suburbs. Second, Jewish law requires Jews to walk rather than ride to services on holy days- but in most low-density suburbs, very few people can live within walking distance of a synagogue (or anything else for that matter). Third, Jewish law has traditionally discouraged development of rural land …

Estimation Of Direct And Indirect Causal Effects In Longitudinal Studies, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Maya L. Petersen Aug 2004

Estimation Of Direct And Indirect Causal Effects In Longitudinal Studies, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Maya L. Petersen

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

The causal effect of a treatment on an outcome is generally mediated by several intermediate variables. Estimation of the component of the causal effect of a treatment that is mediated by a given intermediate variable (the indirect effect of the treatment), and the component that is not mediated by that intermediate variable (the direct effect of the treatment) is often relevant to mechanistic understanding and to the design of clinical and public health interventions. Under the assumption of no-unmeasured confounders, Robins & Greenland (1992) and Pearl (2000), develop two identifiability results for direct and indirect causal effects. They define an …

Is Criminal Justice A Casualty Of The Bush Administration's War On Terror?, Michael Greenberger Aug 2004

Is Criminal Justice A Casualty Of The Bush Administration's War On Terror?, Michael Greenberger

Faculty Scholarship

Relying on Article I Presidential War Powers, the Bush administration has employed many detention and law enforcement strategies in fighting the War on Terrorism that seemingly give short shrift to traditional constitutional protections. The first of these strategies will be subject to Supreme Court resolution by the end of this Term and concerns the Bush Administration tactic of unilaterally declaring U.S. citizens to be "enemy combatants," thereby subjecting them to incarceration in military prisons without any right to counsel, prior judicial process, or judicial review of this status. Another strategy employed on a widespread basis by the DOJ after September …

Durable Cytotoxic Immune Responses Against Gp120 Elicited By Recombinant Sv40 Vectors Encoding Hiv-1 Gp120 +/- Il-15., Hayley J Mckee, Patricia Y T'Sao, Maria Vera, Puri Fortes, David S Strayer Aug 2004

Durable Cytotoxic Immune Responses Against Gp120 Elicited By Recombinant Sv40 Vectors Encoding Hiv-1 Gp120 +/- Il-15., Hayley J Mckee, Patricia Y T'Sao, Maria Vera, Puri Fortes, David S Strayer

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: A vaccine that elicits durable, powerful anti-HIV immunity remains an elusive goal. In these studies we tested whether multiple treatments with viral vector-delivered HIV envelope antigen (gp120), with and without IL-15, could help to approach that goal. For this purpose, we used recombinant Tag-deleted SV40-derived vectors (rSV40s), since they do not elicit neutralizing antibody responses, and so can be given multiply without loss of transduction efficiency. METHODS: SV(gp120) carried the coding sequences for HIV-1NL4-3 Env, and SV(mIL-15) carried the cDNA for mouse IL-15. Singly, and in combination, these two vectors were given monthly to BALB/cJ mice. Cytotoxic immunity and …

Rodent Ecology And Plague In North America , Gary W. Witmer Aug 2004

Rodent Ecology And Plague In North America , Gary W. Witmer

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Complex rodent communities occupy the western United States. These communities are susceptible to the exotic disease, plague, that has become enzootic in the region since 1899. Weather conditions, the susceptibility of rodent species to plague, population dynamics, and the intra-specific interactions between populations of mammals and their flea associates all contribute to the periodic outbreaks of plague. Understanding these ecological relationships allows managers to generate predictions and to intervene in plague situations so as to reduce the negative effects on ecosystems and to reduce the risk of plague to humans.

Can A Bankrupt Company Assign Its Patent License To The Highest Bidder, Even When The License Itself Forbids Assignment? Why Everex Systems, Inc. V. Cadtrak Corp. Gives An Unconvincing Answer, Matthew D. Siegel Aug 2004

Can A Bankrupt Company Assign Its Patent License To The Highest Bidder, Even When The License Itself Forbids Assignment? Why Everex Systems, Inc. V. Cadtrak Corp. Gives An Unconvincing Answer, Matthew D. Siegel

ExpressO

A patent licensee that declares bankruptcy will often want to assign its rights under the license to another party in exchange for much-needed cash. The Bankruptcy Code generally allows debtors to assign executory contracts, including patent licenses, in this way. Indeed, the Code permits debtors to assign a contract even if the contract itself contains a “no-assign” clause, i.e., a clause expressly forbidding assignment. But there is an exception: The Code will defer to certain kinds of otherwise applicable non-bankruptcy law that would normally prevent the contract from being assigned. In particular, the Code will not allow assignment by a …

Intersexuality And Universal Marriage, Michael L. Rosin Aug 2004

Intersexuality And Universal Marriage, Michael L. Rosin

ExpressO

The proposed Federal Marriage Amendment would raise to the constitutional level the traditional understanding of marriage as the union of one woman and one man. In so doing it would raise to the constitutional level the questions of who is a woman and who is a man. There is currently no settled case or statute law answering these questions. A 1979 Australian annulment case declaring a husband with XX sex chromosomes to be neither a man nor a woman demonstrates the law’s inability to deal with the physically intersexed. Legal scholars defending the traditional view of marriage cite 19th century …

A Case Study In The Banning Of Political Parties: The Pan-Arab Movement El Ard And The Israeli Supreme Court, Ron Harris Aug 2004

A Case Study In The Banning Of Political Parties: The Pan-Arab Movement El Ard And The Israeli Supreme Court, Ron Harris

ExpressO

Attempts to outlaw political groups that are alleged to approve the use of violence, to limit the expression of views that challenge the core values of democratic nation-states, and to ban radical, separatist, or religious political parties are more widespread in recent years than at any other time since 1945. They gave rise in the last few years to litigation in Constitutional Courts and Supreme Courts in Spain, Germany, Turkey, France, Israel, and Latvia, as well as in the European courts.

The present article tells the story of the encounter in the years 1959-1965 between the Pan-Arab national movement El …
