Reading Ondaatje's Poetry, Eluned Summers-Bremner Sep 2004

Reading Ondaatje's Poetry, Eluned Summers-Bremner

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Eluned Summers-Bremner pursues in her paper "Reading Ondaatje's Poetry" a psychoanalytic reading of Ondaatje's poetry based on Lacan's thought, highlighting occasions where nature and culture meet. Focusing on the volumes Secular Love and The Man with Seven Toes, Summers-Bremner explores how nature's troubled regions are navigated through the structural estrangement of looking for a name. In Lacanian terms, a proper name signals the contradiction of one's belonging to a biological or other kind of family, whence one's name often arises, and being a user or respondent of language, which produces meaning through its infringement or exceeding of its users' intentions, …

Touching The Language Of Citizenship In Ondaatje's Anil's Ghost, Sandeep Sanghera

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Sandeep Sanghera, in her paper "Touching the Language of Citizenship in Ondaatje's Anil's Ghost" discusses questions which make Ondaatje's novel a text about postmodern identity: who is this woman Anil who lives mostly in the West, travels on a British passport, works for an international organization, and no longer has any real ties to her first home? In the paper, these questions are examined via the languages Anil adopts and abandons in the novel. Sanghera elaborates on the question of foreign-ness represented by the protagonist of the novel; however, this foreign-ness is examined in the particular context concerning the substance …

The Beecher Sisters As Nineteenth-Century Feminist Icons Of The Sameness-Difference Debate, Tracy A. Thomas Sep 2004

The Beecher Sisters As Nineteenth-Century Feminist Icons Of The Sameness-Difference Debate, Tracy A. Thomas

Akron Law Faculty Publications

This essay reviews the recent book, The Beecher Sisters by Barbara White, through the lens of feminist theory. It argues that each of the three great women chronicled in the book – Catharine Beecher, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Isabella Beecher Hooker – serve as icons for each of the distinct strands of modern feminist thought. Barbara White, a professor emeritus of women’s studies at the University of New Hampshire, has given the field of women’s legal history a boost with her interdisciplinary contribution to the social and legal history of women. In The Beecher Sisters, White introduces us to each …

Single Mothers Working At Night: Standard Work, Child Care Subsidies, And Implications For Welfare Reform, Erdal Tekin Sep 2004

Single Mothers Working At Night: Standard Work, Child Care Subsidies, And Implications For Welfare Reform, Erdal Tekin

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

This paper estimates the effect of child care subsidies on the standard work decision of single mothers and examines whether this effect differs between welfare recipients and nonrecipients. The analysis uses data from the 1999 National Survey of America's Families. Results suggest that child care subsidy receipt is associated with a 6.9 percentage point increase in the probability of single mothers' working at standard jobs. When the effect of subsidy receipt is allowed to differ between welfare recipients and nonrecipients, results indicate that welfare recipients who are offered a child care subsidy are 14 percentage points more likely to work …

A Risk-Averse Newsvendor Model With Pricing Consideration, Zuobin Ye Sep 2004

A Risk-Averse Newsvendor Model With Pricing Consideration, Zuobin Ye

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

A decision maker who is facing a random demand for a perishable product, such as newspapers, decides how many units to order for a single selling period. This single-period inventory problem is often referred to as the "classic newsvendor problem", in which the selling price is fixed, the order must be made before the selling period, and the decision maker is risk-neutral. If the decision maker orders too many (overage), the inventory cost will be too high. If the decision maker orders too few (underage), the potential profit will be lost. The optimal order quantity is a balance between the …

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

In November 2002, the Chinese Communist Party held its 16th Congress and formally initiated a sweeping turnover of senior leaders in both the Party and the People's Liberation Army (PLA). The meeting heralded not merely a new set of personalities in positions of political and military power, but also the emergence of a new generation of leaders. Who are these individuals, and what does their rise mean for the future of China and its military? China matters to the United States because of its size, its spectacular patterns of growth, its profound problems linked to rapid growth, and its military …

Development Of A Novel Chloramphenicol Resistance Expression Plasmid Used For Genetic Complementation Of A Flig Deletion Mutant In Treponema Denticola, Linda L. Slivienski-Gebhardt, Jacques Izard, William A. Samsonoff, Ronald J. Limberger Sep 2004

Limberger

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

A new expression plasmid containing the fla operon promoter and a staphylococcal chloramphenicol resistance gene, was constructed to help assess the role of fliG in Treponema denticola motility. Deletion of fliG resulted in a nonmotile mutant with a markedly decreased number of flagellar filaments. Wild-type fliG genes from T. denticola and from Treponema pallidum were cloned into this expression plasmid. In both cases, the gene restored the ability of the mutant to gyrate its cell ends and enabled colony spreading in agarose. This shuttle plasmid enables high-level expression of genes in T. denticola and possesses an efficient selectable …

West Nile Virus Infection In Reindeer (Rangifer Tarandus), Mitchell V. Palmer, William C. Stoffregen, Douglas G. Rogers, Amir N. Hamir, Juergen A. Richt, Douglas D. Pedersen, W. Ray Waters

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

West Nile virus (WNV) infection in 4 reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) resulted in lymphohistiocytic encephalomyelitis within the medulla oblongata and cervical spinal cord. Immunohistochemistry revealed WNV antigen within neurons and among mononuclear cell infiltrates. These represent the first known cases of clinical WNV infection in Cervidae. Clinical signs and lesions were similar to those described in horses. Nucleotide sequence of a 768-bp region of the WNV E-glycoprotein gene revealed 1 nucleotide mutation, which resulted in a single amino acid substitution from a serine to a glycine (position 227 of E-glycoprotein) when compared with the prototype WNV-NY99 strain (isolated from …

Ethnic Differences In Hypertension And Blood Pressure Control. Issues For Prevention Strategies, Pietro A. Modesti Sep 2004

Ethnic Differences In Hypertension And Blood Pressure Control. Issues For Prevention Strategies, Pietro A. Modesti

Saudi Medical Journal

opulation studies revealed significantly lower levels of hypertension among rural community than both semi-urban and recently urbanized communities, and much of the difference was attributed to environmental factors. Migration studies revealed that increased sodium consumption is a key factor for the development of hypertension in some ethnic group, and people of African origin are known to be more prone to develop hypertension in western countries. Recent data obtained in European countries reveals that the rates of detection, treatment, and control are higher among the black population indicating a greater awareness among the general public and physicians in Europe of the …

Coronary Stent Thrombosis In Bare Metal Stents, Waqar H. Ahmed, Khaled F. Al-Shaibi Sep 2004

Coronary Stent Thrombosis In Bare Metal Stents, Waqar H. Ahmed, Khaled F. Al-Shaibi

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: The incidence of coronary stent thrombosis has reduced with improved techniques and drugs. Nevertheless, clinical trials may not reflect real world practice due to the selective inclusion criteria, regional variations and more complex patients treated in day-to-day practice. We examined the frequency, predisposing factors and outcome of stent thrombosis in unselected patients undergoing bare metal stents. METHODS: All patients undergoing stent implantation are entered into a prospective database. We reviewed the incidence of stent thrombosis in our database for all patients with at least 6 months of follow up. RESULTS: From December 1996 through to December 2002, 1140 consecutive …
