Informal Care-Two-Tiered Care? The Work Of Family Members And Friends In Hospitals And Cancer Centres, Christina Sinding
Informal Care-Two-Tiered Care? The Work Of Family Members And Friends In Hospitals And Cancer Centres, Christina Sinding
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
In a qualitative study conducted in Ontario, Canada, family members and friends of ill people defined a normal territory in which care from health professionals could not be counted on to be timely, effective or empathic. Under these conditions relatives and friends took on considerable responsibility, both for providing care and for securing care from health professionals. Yet considerable variation was apparent in this study in the sense respondents had of their own capacities to provide and secure care. Findings from this study suggest that service tiers exist in the institutional care system, linked to the time, knowledge and resources …
Self-Help Group Participation And Empowerment In Hong Kong, Bong-Ho Mok
Self-Help Group Participation And Empowerment In Hong Kong, Bong-Ho Mok
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This paper reports on the first comprehensive study of self-help groups in Hong Kong. Initial findings from the quantative and qualitative data suggest that self-help group participation has an impact on intrapersonal, interpersonal and community/political empowerment. Based on existing data, this study has resulted in the development of a hypothetical model encompassing the interrelationships among self-help group participation, social support, social learning, leadership and empowerment, for testing in future research.

Department of Emergency Medicine
The urea cycle disorders (UCDs) are important models for developing gene replacement therapy for liver diseases. Long-term correction of the most common UCD, ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC) deficiency, has yet to be achieved in clinical or preclinical settings. The single human clinical trial using early-generation adenovirus (Ad) failed to show any biochemical correction. In adult OTC-deficient mice, an E1/E2-deleted Ad vector expressing the mouse OTC gene, but not the human, was only transiently therapeutic. By using post-transcriptional overexpression in the context of the less immunogenic helper-dependent adenoviral vector, we achieved metabolic correction of adult OTC-deficient mice for >6 months. Demonstrating this …

Purchasing Pharmaceuticals (Health, Nutrition And Population (Hnp) Discussion Paper), Ulrika Enemark, Anita Alban, Enrique Seoane-Vazquez
Pharmacy Faculty Books and Book Chapters
This paper discusses the purchasing of pharmaceuticals as a key component of costeffective and equitable healthcare delivery. Pharmaceuticals account for a high, sometimes the dominant share of health expenditures in developing countries, but the desired health outcomes can only be achieved if the adequate medicines reach the right people and are used in the correct way. This requires purchasing arrangements that take into account the information asymmetry between patients and providers, ensure selection of effective, safe and affordable medicines and set economic incentives in a way that encourages rational drug use. The organizational and institutional frameworks define the roles of …

Worry About Medical Care, Family Support, And Depression Of The Elders In Urban China, Rongjun Sun
Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications
This study examines the role of family support in reducing the elders’s depression in the face of the perceived inadequate public medical care in urban China. Using data from the Survey on Aging and Intergenerational Relations in Baoding City, this article investigates the overall depression level, somatic symptoms, and affective symptoms, respectively. The findings suggest that perceived inadequate public medical care, which results from dramatic changes in China’s socioeconomic transformation, has a stressful impact on all measures of depression. Family support, by its structure and function, shows both direct and moderating effects in counteracting …
Tackling Crime And Fear Of Crime While Waiting At Britain’S Railway Stations, Paul Cozens, Richard Neale, David Hillier, Jeremy Whitaker
Tackling Crime And Fear Of Crime While Waiting At Britain’S Railway Stations, Paul Cozens, Richard Neale, David Hillier, Jeremy Whitaker
Journal of Public Transportation
Crime on the railways in Britain is an increasing concern for train operating companies, the British Transport Police (BTP), passengers, and local residents. Significantly, rail users consistently perceive their risks from crime to be considerably higher than official crime statistics indicate, having a negative affect on levels of patronage. This article presents an exploratory study of passengers’ fear of crime while waiting at railway stations using Quick Time Virtual Reality (QTVR) walkthrough scenes. QTVR arguably represents an innovative, dynamic, and interactive environmental stimulus for gaining insights into passengers’ fear of crime. Visibility at stations was identified as a crucial factor …
Overcoming Financial And Institutional Barriers To Tod: Lindbergh Station Case Study, Eric Dumbaugh
Overcoming Financial And Institutional Barriers To Tod: Lindbergh Station Case Study, Eric Dumbaugh
Journal of Public Transportation
While transit-oriented development has been embraced as a strategy to address a wide range of planning objectives, from minimizing automobile dependence to improving quality of life, there has been almost no examination into the practices that have resulted in the actual development of one. This study examines Atlanta’s Lindbergh Station TOD to understand how a real-world development was able to overcome the substantial development barriers that face these developments. It finds that transit agencies have a largely underappreciated ability to overcome the land assembly and project financing barriers that have heretofore prevented the development of these projects. Further, because they …

Survey Of Omega-3 Fatty Acid Intakes And Omega-3 Food Selections In Cardiac Patients Living In A Section Of The Midwestern United States, Kimberly Heidal, Nancy M. Lewis, Sharon Evans
Survey Of Omega-3 Fatty Acid Intakes And Omega-3 Food Selections In Cardiac Patients Living In A Section Of The Midwestern United States, Kimberly Heidal, Nancy M. Lewis, Sharon Evans
Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications
The objectives of this research were to survey the omega-3 fatty acid intakes and omega-3 food selections of 36 cardiac patients living in the midwestern United States. An omega-3 food frequency was developed that included 149 food items. Cardiac patients from a local heart clinic participated (n = 36). Data were analyzed using the Statistical Program for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 10.0. Dietary omega-3 fatty acid intakes ranged from 0.18 – 10.15 g/day. Fish and seafood were the primary food sources of omega-3 fatty acids and were consumed twice a week. Major plant food sources of omega-3 fatty …

The Promethean
How do we decide what kind of material to print in the Promethean? It seems like that ought to be a simple question to answer, even one with an obvious answer: the best writing from the students, staff, and faculty of Concordia University. But, in fact, it's a question and a conflict that while it has frustrated some students and Promethean staffers, has ultimately vitalized our sense of purpose and energized the conversation about the role and shape of the literary arts at a Christian university. And so, since last spring, we have been wrestling with questions of what kind …

Does Anyone Need Help Out There? Lessons From Designing Online Help, Judith M. Arnold, Floyd Csir, Jennifer N. Sias, Jingping Zhang
Librarian Research
In order to provide online help for distance students, as well as the increasing number of on-campus students who regularly access library resources, a team of librarians from the Marshall University Libraries created an online library assistance site (HELP). This site brings together traditional print handouts, FAQs, online subject guides, course-specific guides, learning modules, and instructional videos in one central location where users can get assistance with library-related questions at their point of need. This article discusses the rationale for developing the site, the process of creating it and incorporating user input, ongoing content development, the impact upon the Libraries’ …
