The Alu Ya-lineage is a group of related, short interspersed elements (SINEs) found in primates. This lineage includes subfamilies Ya1-Ya5, Ya5a2 and others. Some of these subfamilies are still actively mobilizing in the human genome. We have analyzed 2482 elements that reside in the human genome draft sequence and focused our analyses on the 2318 human autosomal Ya Alu elements. A total of 1470 autosomal loci were subjected to polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based assays that allow analysis of individual Ya-lineage Alu elements. About 22% (313/1452) of the Ya-lineage Alu elements were polymorphic for the insertion presence on human autosomes. Less …

Income, Work And Freedom, Philip L. Harvey
Income, Work And Freedom, Philip L. Harvey
ExpressO
The ability of public policies to secure the economic and social rights recognized in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is proposed as a trumping supplement to the utility-maximization criterion of neo-classical welfare economics. Two progressive proposals for ending poverty and promoting personal development and freedom are then compared using this assessment criterion. The first proposal is that society guarantee everyone an unconditional basic income (BI) without imposing work requirements in exchange for the guarantee. The second proposal is that society use direct job creation to provide employment assurance (EA) for anyone who is unable to find decent work in …

Estimating A Survival Distribution With Current Status Data And High-Dimensional Covariates, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Aad Van Der Vaart
Estimating A Survival Distribution With Current Status Data And High-Dimensional Covariates, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Aad Van Der Vaart
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
We consider the inverse problem of estimating a survival distribution when the survival times are only observed to be in one of the intervals of a random bisection of the time axis. We are particularly interested in the case that high-dimensional and/or time-dependent covariates are available, and/or the survival events and censoring times are only conditionally independent given the covariate process. The method of estimation consists of regularizing the survival distribution by taking the primitive function or smoothing, estimating the regularized parameter by using estimating equations, and finally recovering an estimator for the parameter of interest.
Estimation Of Treatment Effects In Randomized Trials With Noncompliance And A Dichotomous Outcome , Mark J. Van Der Laan, Alan E. Hubbard, Nicholas P. Jewell
Estimation Of Treatment Effects In Randomized Trials With Noncompliance And A Dichotomous Outcome , Mark J. Van Der Laan, Alan E. Hubbard, Nicholas P. Jewell
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
We propose a class of estimators of the treatment effect on a dichotomous outcome among the treated subjects within covariate and treatment arm strata in randomized trials with non-compliance. Recent articles by Vansteelandt and Goethebeur (2003) and Robins and Rotnitzky (2004) have presented consistent and asymptotically linear estimators of a causal odds ratio, which rely, beyond correct specification of a model for the causal odds ratio, on a correctly specified model for a potentially high dimensional nuisance parameter. In this article we propose consistent, asymptotically linear and locally efficient estimators of a causal relative risk and a new parameter -- …

Today's familiar cry of "Not in my backyard!" is not new to property owners. In 1915 the familiar cry was raised by a number of homeowners and building associations as they fought to prevent a developer from constructing rowhomes in northwest Baltimore.
On May 12, 1915, an opportunity for building developers arose to challenge the limits of acceptable building restrictions in Baltimore with the filing of a permit to build in a restricted area. In a time when cottage style homes were in vogue and suburbanization was the high style, the residents of Forest Park, Baltimore saw the filing of …

Performance And Applications Of Gossamer Wind (Tm) Solar Powered Ceiling Fans, Florida Solar Energy Center, M. Lubliner
FSEC Energy Research Center®
Ceiling fans provide a cooling breeze, reduce temperature stratification and improve thermal comfort. Ceiling fans save energy in homes by improving thermal comfort, which results in changes to the thermostat set-point or reduced use of air conditioning.

Automatic Annotation Of Protein Motif Function With Gene Ontology Terms, Xinghua Lu, Chengxiang Zhai, Vanathi Gopalakrishnan, Bruce G. Buchanan
MUSC Faculty Journal Articles
Background: Conserved protein sequence motifs are short stretches of amino acid sequence patterns that potentially encode the function of proteins. Several sequence pattern searching algorithms and programs exist for identifying candidate protein motifs at the whole genome level. However, a much needed and important task is to determine the functions of the newly identified protein motifs. The Gene Ontology (GO) project is an endeavor to annotate the function of genes or protein sequences with terms from a dynamic, controlled vocabulary and these annotations serve well as a knowledge base. Results: This paper presents methods to mine the GO knowledge base …
