Extension And Research Professionals Join Forces To Address A Critical Nutrition Issue, Susan Nitzke, Karen Kritsch, Barbara Lohse, Tanya Horacek

Journal of Extension

The land-grant mission of combining research and outreach efforts to address problems and needs of society was exemplified in the design and development of a randomized treatment-control pre-post, multi-state intervention to increase fruit and vegetable intakes of low income, young adults. Collaborative arrangements were established in 10 states to accomplish the project's multiple goals. These unique partnerships established an innovative model, paving the way for future multi-state research and Extension collaborations.

Integrating Ecology And Relating Natural Systems To Agriculture: An Increased Priority For Extension Agricultural Programming, Kyle Cecil Oct 2004

Integrating Ecology And Relating Natural Systems To Agriculture: An Increased Priority For Extension Agricultural Programming, Kyle Cecil

Journal of Extension

Extension must modify its historical agricultural educational emphasis from one addressing primarily the production of food to one that addresses the production of food in a system encompassing the goals of individuals, society, and the environment. In the search to incorporate more ecological rationale into agricultural production, Extension educators should develop a deeper understanding of the nature of agroecosystems and the principles and processes by which they function. A contemporary Extension agricultural program that understands agroecology and believes in the need for a more sustainable production system will lead the way toward a more profitable and environmentally friendly agriculture.

Patterns Of Tuberculosis In The Central Nervous System, Soobia Raza, Aliyah Sadaf, Faisal Fecto, Rushna Pervez Ali, Muhammad Ehsan Bari, Ather Enam

Medical College Documents

Tuberculous involvement of central nervous system (CNS), although not very frequent, results in severe morbidity. Tuberculosis (TB) is endemic in developing countries but even in developed countries, after an initial decline up until 1980’s, incidence of TB is on the rise. The AIDS epidemic, emergence of multi-drug resistant strains and immigration of people from endemic areas are some of the factors significantly contributing to this increase. Consequently, the burden of central nervous system tuberculosis has increased significantly worldwide.

Repellency Of Essential Oils Of Some Kenyan Plants Against Anopheles Gambiae, Maurice O. Omolo, Denis Okinyo, Isaiah O. Ndiege, Wilber Lwande, Ahmed Hassanali

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Five mosquito repellents have been identified from the essential oils of 6 plants growing in Kenya. These include (S)-(-)-cis-perillyl alcohol, (S)-(-)-cis-verbenol, (S)-(-)-cis-carveol, (S)-(-)-perillaldehyde, caryophyllene oxide and (S)-(-)-cis-perillyl alcohol. (S)-(-)-cis-perillyl alcohol and (S)-(-)-cis-verbenol were the most potent. Essential oils of six plants growing in Kenya were screened for repellent activities against Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto. The oils of Conyza newii (Compositeae) and Plectranthus marrubioides (Labiateae) were the most repellent (RD 50 = 8.9 × 10 -5 mg cm -2, 95% CI) followed by Lippia javanica (Verbenaceae), Lippia ukambensis (Verbenaceae), Tetradenia riparia, (Iboza multiflora) (Labiateae) and Tarchonanthus camphoratus (Compositeae). Eight constituents of …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The effect of microhabitat temperature variation on the early development of Plasmodium falciparum in experimentally infected Anopheles gambiae s.s. (Diptera: Culicidae) was studied. Batches of mosquitoes were fed artificially on gametocyteamic blood obtained from human volunteers and then held in five environmental conditions described as: (1) incubator maintained at constant temperature of 28 ± 1°C as control; (2) temperature unregulated laboratory environment; (3) screen house; (4) grass thatched mud house and (5) corrugated iron roofed mud house. Both the grass and iron roofed mud houses were real houses found in the village communities around the ICIPE Research Centre in Mbita …
