Women In Honors Education: The Case Of Western Washington University, George Mariz Oct 2004

Women In Honors Education: The Case Of Western Washington University, George Mariz

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

This essay is concerned with women and their educational experience in an Honors Program, and with their educational choices. It deals briefly with the history of women in higher education in the Western world and in the light of this history compares WWU Honors women with historical trends, with men and women students in the institution, and with students nationally in terms of major choices and career aspirations. It is not an attempt to view Honors women’s education comprehensively nor to look at WWU women along side Honors women more generally. In fact, it is not possible to do so, …

Emotional Intelligence And The Honors Student, Laird Edman Oct 2004

Emotional Intelligence And The Honors Student, Laird Edman

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

Over the past decade the construct of emotional intelligence has captured the public imagination and become a hot topic in the popular media. While the extravagant claims for the importance of emotional intelligence have little empirical support, evidence has been growing for the existence of the construct. This study is an attempt to relate emotional intelligence to the decision of first-year college students to enroll in an honors program.

A measure of emotional intelligence was devised made up of four different Likert-type scales measuring different components of the construct. These scales were administered to 72 freshman students at a selective, …

Examining Strengths And Challenges Of Rapid Rural Immigration, Rochelle L. Dalla, Francisco Villarruel, Sheran C. Cramer, Gloria Gonzalez-Kruger Oct 2004

Examining Strengths And Challenges Of Rapid Rural Immigration, Rochelle L. Dalla, Francisco Villarruel, Sheran C. Cramer, Gloria Gonzalez-Kruger

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Intensive, in-depth interviews were conducted with 45 non-Hispanic white residents of three rural Nebraska meatpacking communities. The purpose of the investigation was to document (I) perceptions of community change; (2) community-wide benefits of a new Latino population; and (3) strategies for strengthening multi-ethnic rural communities. Data were analyzed using Thematic Analyses (Aronson 1994). Application of the findings, for strengthening rural communities, is discussed.

The composition of rural populations is changing at a remarkable rate largely due to immigration (movement into a country in which one is not a native) and migration (movement within a country). The population growth of US …

A Case Study Of The Impact Of Population Influx On A Small Community In Nebraska, James Potter, Rodrigo Cantarero, X. Winson Yan, Steve Larrick, Blanca Ramirez-Salazar Oct 2004

A Case Study Of The Impact Of Population Influx On A Small Community In Nebraska, James Potter, Rodrigo Cantarero, X. Winson Yan, Steve Larrick, Blanca Ramirez-Salazar

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This paper discusses the impact of population influx on small communities using the city of Schuyler, NE, as a case study. As a small city of 4,000 some residents, Schuyler experienced a proportionally significant population influx in the past decade largely due to an increase of immigrant population. Unlike large cities, Schuyler has fewer resources to cope with the impact of a drastic population increase on its physical conditions and environment. The population expansion also impacted its previously homogeneous social and cultural environment. Through surveying long-time and newly arrived residents and comparing responses of the two groups, the study revealed …

Review Of The Trajectories Of Rural Life: New Perspectives On Rural Canada Edited By Raymond Blake And Andrew Nurse, Michael Gertler Oct 2004

Review Of The Trajectories Of Rural Life: New Perspectives On Rural Canada Edited By Raymond Blake And Andrew Nurse, Michael Gertler

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The Trajectories of Rural Life presents papers from a Saskatchewan Institute of Public Policy conference designed to go "beyond the myths of rural Canada's past to develop a clear picture of the present reality from all perspectives .... " This could be a complicated project. The chapters range from research reports to policy essays, with notable diversity in terms of discipline and approach. Despite some lack of clarity in overall concept, many of the contributions shine through. In addition to chapters on the cultural reconstruction of rural life in Quebec, minority experiences in rural Atlantic Canada, family violence in rural …

Review Of American Arrivals: Anthropology Engages The New Immigration Edited By Nancy Foner, Mcc. Heyman Oct 2004

Review Of American Arrivals: Anthropology Engages The New Immigration Edited By Nancy Foner, Mcc. Heyman

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Immigration to the United States since 1965, usually labeled "the new immigration," has several distinguishing features. First, the predominant source nations are in Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, rather than Europe. The second is a new trend within this scenario, the diversification of destinations, such that migration involves not only Los Angeles and New York, but also numerous small cities in the Prairie and Great Plains states, locations that once received Europeans and Mexicans but have been little involved in international migration for decades. In order to understand the dramatic social and cultural changes stemming …

Concerns Of Hispanics And Service Providers In Southwest Missouri, James Wirth, Susan Dollar Oct 2004

Concerns Of Hispanics And Service Providers In Southwest Missouri, James Wirth, Susan Dollar

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This descriptive study identifies the key concerns voiced by the Hispanic community and service providers in rural southwestern Missouri. Three surveys were conducted in 2001 with 381 Latino adults, Latino youth, and human service providers located in over 20 rural cities and towns throughout southwest Missouri. Demographic information, socioeconomic status, and mobility patterns of Latino respondents are profiled, and their housing, educational, and healthcare needs are reported. Language barriers, legal and documentation issues, a lack of job availability, and nonacceptance in the broader community are identified as key concerns of Latinos. Human-service providers identified language barriers, a lack of understanding …

Family, Peer, And Acculturative Correlates Of Prosocial Development Among Latinos, Maria Rosario T. De Guzman, Gustavo Carlo Oct 2004

Family, Peer, And Acculturative Correlates Of Prosocial Development Among Latinos, Maria Rosario T. De Guzman, Gustavo Carlo

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The present study was designed to examine the roles of family cohesion and adaptability, parent and peer attachment, and acculturation in predicting prosocial behavior tendencies in Latino adolescents from Nebraska, A total of 63 Latinos (M age = 14.52 years) from Lincoln, NE, completed measures of acculturation, parent and peer attachment, family adaptability and cohesion, and tendencies to perform prosocial behaviors. Results of a series of multiple regression analyses suggest that acculturation negatively predicted pro social behavior tendencies (i.e., the higher the level of acculturation, the lower the tendency to perform prosocial acts). Peer but not parent attachment, and family …

Review Of Play Like A Man, Win Like A Woman: What Men Know About Success That Women Need To Learn By Gail Evans., Amy Lee Andreassen Oct 2004

Review Of Play Like A Man, Win Like A Woman: What Men Know About Success That Women Need To Learn By Gail Evans., Amy Lee Andreassen

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

In her book, Evans, now retired, attempted to define the "unwritten rules" in business. Her premise is that to get ahead in today's corporate environment, women need to understand and "play" by the rules written by men. Evans believes in the bottom line, "When it comes to business, most women are at a disadvantage. We're forced to guess, to improvise, to bluff. That is why so few of us play the game well, and even fewer find it fulfilling" (p. 7).

Seeking Coherence And Integrity: Personal And Professional Demands And Expectations Of Senior Women Professors, Florence A. Hamrick, Mimi Benjamin Oct 2004

Seeking Coherence And Integrity: Personal And Professional Demands And Expectations Of Senior Women Professors, Florence A. Hamrick, Mimi Benjamin

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

This study of 26 senior women professors at a large research university suggests that, while their negotiation of professional and personal commitments involved calculated balancing acts and strategies, they primarily described searches for integrity and coherence in life. More effective personal management strategies, modified and more realistic expectations, and a refusal to dwell on past decisions were among the themes identified. Respondents described an almost uniform and longstanding self-sufficiency and acknowledged having more control over aspects of their work, lives, and time. However, for many, time was also increasingly spent on some level of attention to health, and retirement preparation.

Pioneer Women In Manitoba: Evidence Of Servant-Leadership, Carolyn Crippen Oct 2004

Pioneer Women In Manitoba: Evidence Of Servant-Leadership, Carolyn Crippen

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Leadership was characterized as patriarchal and hierarchical during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Pioneer women were often not credited with leadership qualities although many, including school teachers, journalists, suffragettes, healthcare workers, and social activists played an important role in the development of Manitoba communities. This study hypothesized that women were engaged in unrecognized leadership strategies within that contemporary culture. This research explored whether three particular Manitoba pioneer women, Margaret Scott (1855-1931), Margret Benedictsson (1866- 1956), and Jessie McDermott (1870-1950), did, in fact, practice a form of leadership. This leadership form was identified as servant leadership and defined by Robert …

Information Seeking And Students Studying For Professional Careers: The Cases Of Enginerering And Law Students In Ireland, Gillian Kerins, Ronan Madden, Crystal Fulton Oct 2004

Information Seeking And Students Studying For Professional Careers: The Cases Of Enginerering And Law Students In Ireland, Gillian Kerins, Ronan Madden, Crystal Fulton

Support services (Former ITT) - Articles

This paper reports the results of two empirical studies which explored the information seeking behaviour of engineering and law students in Ireland. Findings reveal similar patterns in the information seeking behaviour between students studying to become professionals and information seeking patterns of these groups identified in the Leckie et al. model. Students learned their information seeking strategies, including effective and less effective approaches, from educators. Mis-perceptions of the role and value of libraries and information professionals in their studies were common, and as a result, students often adopted information seeking strategies that excluded libraries and library staff. The two studies …

Detection And Quantitation Of Bovine Respiratory Syncytial Virus Using Real-Time Quantitative Rt-Pcr And Quantitative Competitive Rt-Pcr Assays, Jenna Achenbaum, Christina L. Topliff, Ventzislav B. Vassilev, Ruben O. Donis, Kent M. Eskridge, Clayton L. Kelling

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

A single tube, fluorogenic probe-based, real-time quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (Q-RT-PCR) assay was developed for detection and quantitation of bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) using BioRad’s iCycler iQ™. Real-time Q-RT-PCR was compared with quantitative competitive RT-PCR (QC-RT-PCR) and viral titers. Viral mRNA levels were measured in BRSV-infected bovine turbinate cell lysate harvested at eight time points (1.5, 6, 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72 h) post-infection. A homologous BRSV cRNA standard was used for quantitation of the mRNA by plotting a standard curve of cycle threshold (Ct) values versus standard 10-fold dilutions of cRNA of known concentrations. Detection as …

Rights, Rationality, And The Preemption Of Reasons, Richard Warner Oct 2004

Rights, Rationality, And The Preemption Of Reasons, Richard Warner

Chicago-Kent Law Review

This Article rejects the following Comparative Conception of rationality: namely, an action is rational only if it can be justified by showing that the reasons for it are better than (or at least as good as) the reasons against it. The Comparative Conception is inconsistent with moral rights, at least on one widespread understanding of such rights. The incommensurability of reasons is the key both to seeing why the Comparative Conception is false and to understanding the kinds of constraints on action moral rights impose.

A Changing Church: Radical Perspectives Of Catholicism From The Margins Of Society In Dublin, Caitlin Connelly Oct 2004

A Changing Church: Radical Perspectives Of Catholicism From The Margins Of Society In Dublin, Caitlin Connelly

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In this study, I have explored Irish Catholicism in Dublin, and the relationship and tension between the margins and the center. In particular, I have examined the ways that people on the margins of the Church and on the margins of society in Dublin are responding to the changes in the Church. By incorporating their experiences and views into our understanding of Catholicism, we can gain a more accurate and multifaceted understanding of “what’s going on” with the Catholic Church in this city, and where its future lies.
