Imposing Cyclic Strain On Osteogenic Stem Cells: The Effects Of Strain Levels And Repetition Of Cyclic Strain In An Implant Environment, Daniel Henlee Smith Dec 2004

Imposing Cyclic Strain On Osteogenic Stem Cells: The Effects Of Strain Levels And Repetition Of Cyclic Strain In An Implant Environment, Daniel Henlee Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Bone and bone cells have been shown to respond to mechanical forces placed upon them. Particularly, strain plays an important role in osteogenic differentiation of marrow cells around artificial implants in bone. These strains, depending on their magnitude, duration, and repetition, can alter the proliferation and matrix synthesis of osteoblasts. To test how strain parameters influence osteoblast behavior, a four-point bending apparatus was used to impose cyclic strain on osteogenic stem cells isolated from rats and seeded on titanium plates. Cells were stimulated at 1 Hz for 15 minutes daily and compared to an unstrained control. Stimulation occurred at two …

Towards A Methodology For Interactive Virtual Design Assessment, Kang Li Dec 2004

Towards A Methodology For Interactive Virtual Design Assessment, Kang Li

Theses and Dissertations

Complex interactive behaviour involves cognitive, sensation and motor behaviour and may consist of several sub interactive behaviours. It needs to be examined from different points of view. Although explaining everything in one model is not currently possible, it is possible to connect information from different sources to get a better understanding of the interaction to benefit product design. The long-term objective of our study is to develop a methodology for interactive virtual design assessment to study the interactive behaviour and achieve compatibility. This study summarized two experiments which covered many aspects of interactive behaviours in seated posture. Experiment one addressed …

Common Injuries Of Musicians, Lynette Lukomski Dec 2004

Common Injuries Of Musicians, Lynette Lukomski

Honors Theses

Musicians face many challenges throughout their careers; dealing with an injury should not be one of them. Unfortunately, studies show that up to seventy-five percent of musicians suffer playing-related injuries. These injuries can retard musical growth, can take time out of practices and performances, and may cost a musician his/her job. Fortunately, many non-invasive treatments can be used if injuries are diagnosed quickly, and prevention techniques are available to prevent an injury from ever occurring. Factors such as age and genetics (physical and mental characteristics inherited from parents) should be considered as well when a musician decides his/her practice schedule. …

A Study Of The Impact Of The Mississippi Writing Project Summer Institute On Teacher Efficiency In Writing, Susan Gregory Dillard

Theses and Dissertations

In order to provide evidence of the worth of the Summer Institute of the National Writing Project, this study sought to determine whether participation in the professional development would increase feelings of teacher efficacy in writing. The Summer Institute professional development is consistent with recommendations of researchers in teacher efficacy and in professional development. Albert Bandura?s social cognitive theory provides a contextual framework for both teacher efficacy and the Summer Institute. The study compared the pre- and posttest scores on the Teacher Efficacy Scale for Writing and Writing Orientation Scale (Graham, S., Harris, K. R., Fink, B. & MacArthur, C., …

Nebraska Hospital Preparedness For Psychological Consequences Of Public Health Emergencies (Survey Results Summary), Denise Bulling Dec 2004

Nebraska Hospital Preparedness For Psychological Consequences Of Public Health Emergencies (Survey Results Summary), Denise Bulling

University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications

The University of Nebraska Public Policy Center recently surveyed hospitals across Nebraska to evaluate behavioral health readiness in the event of a disaster, act of terrorism (including bioterrorism) or other mass-casualty incident. The survey also asked about hospitals’ ability to effectively coordinate with other emergency service providers, such as law enforcement, in the event of a critical incident.

Behavioral health readiness refers to a hospital’s capacity to effectively manage and respond to the psychological needs of patients, staff, and their families resulting from a large scale event or emergency. In many hospitals in Nebraska this capacity is not maintained internally …

Beyond Ethical Leadership: Striving For Authentic Leadership In A New Corporate Context, Mark N. Langseth Dec 2004

Beyond Ethical Leadership: Striving For Authentic Leadership In A New Corporate Context, Mark N. Langseth

Theses and Graduate Projects

Recent corporate scandals in the U.S. - at Enron, WorldCom, Arthur Andersen, and elsewhere - have prompted renewed interest in business ethics. Consistent with the vast majority of organizational leadership literature, however, this new interest in ethics is overwhelmingly focused on the internal practices of corporations. In both the modern organizational leadership literature and recent literature regarding corporate ethics, very little attention has been given to examining leadership from the perspective of the ultimate societal (external) impact of either an organization's products/services or the processes by which they are produced. This essay presents a model of "authentic leadership" in which …

Foreseeing Greatness? Measurable Performance Criteria And The Selection Of Supreme Court Justices, James J. Brudney Dec 2004

Foreseeing Greatness? Measurable Performance Criteria And The Selection Of Supreme Court Justices, James J. Brudney

The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law Working Paper Series

This article contributes to an ongoing debate about the feasibility and desireability of measuring the "merit" of appellate judges--and their consequent Supreme Court potential--by using objective performance variables. Relying on the provocative and controversial "tournament criteria" proposed by Professors Stephen Choi and Mitu Gulati in two recent articles, Brudney assesses the "Supreme Court potential" of Warren Burger and Harry Blackmun based on their appellate court records. He finds that Burger's appellate performance appears more promising under the Choi and Gulati criteria, but then demonstrates how little guidance these quantitative assessments actually provide when reviewing the two men's careers on the …

Regulatory Role Of Glycogen Synthase Kinase 3 For Transcriptional Activity Of Add1/Srebp1c, Kang Ho Kim, Min Jeong Song, Eung Jae Yoo, Sung Sik Choe, Sang Dai Park, Jae Bum Kim Dec 2004

Regulatory Role Of Glycogen Synthase Kinase 3 For Transcriptional Activity Of Add1/Srebp1c, Kang Ho Kim, Min Jeong Song, Eung Jae Yoo, Sung Sik Choe, Sang Dai Park, Jae Bum Kim

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Adipocyte determination- and differentiation-dependent factor 1 (ADD1) plays important roles in lipid metabolism and insulin-dependent gene expression. Because insulin stimulates carbohydrate and lipid synthesis, it would be important to decipher how the transcriptional activity of ADD1/SREBP1c is regulated in the insulin signaling pathway. In this study, we demonstrated that glycogen synthase kinase (GSK)-3 negatively regulates the transcriptional activity of ADD1/SREBP1c. GSK3 inhibitors enhanced a transcriptional activity of ADD1/SREBP1c and expression of ADD1/SREBP1c target genes including fatty acid synthase (FAS), acetyl-CoA carboxylase 1 (ACC1), and steroyl-CoA desaturase 1 (SCD1) in adipocytes and hepatocytes. In contrast, overexpression of GSK3beta down-regulated the transcriptional …

Neuroinflammation In Alzheimer’S Disease: Characterization And Modification Of The Response Of Transgenic Mice To Intrahippocampal Lipopolysaccharide Administration, Donna Lorraine Herber Dec 2004

Neuroinflammation In Alzheimer’S Disease: Characterization And Modification Of The Response Of Transgenic Mice To Intrahippocampal Lipopolysaccharide Administration, Donna Lorraine Herber

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Alzheimers disease (AD) is pathologically characterized by amyloid plaques, neurofibrillary tangles, inflammation, and neurodegeneration. According to the amyloid hypothesis of AD, the central mediating event of the disease is the deposition of amyloid. The inflammation hypothesis of AD states that it is the inflammatory response to plaques and tangles, rather than the actual lesions, which causes the disease. Studies described here combine the two approaches into a single model. Four studies are presented using a basic protocol of intrahippocampal lipopolysaccharide (LPS) injection to stimulate inflammation in transgenic mice. The first study looked at alpha7 nicotinic receptors during the glial response …
