Effective Strategies For Comprehensive Corridor Management, Kristine M. Williams, Karen E. Seggerman Oct 2004

Effective Strategies For Comprehensive Corridor Management, Kristine M. Williams, Karen E. Seggerman

Transportation Planning, Policy, and Processes (TP3) Final Reports

Despite the increasing importance of comprehensive corridor management at the state and local government level, questions remain regarding effective methods for developing and implementing corridor management plans. Further insight is also needed into how best to coordinate FDOT and local government policies and procedures. Obtaining answers to these questions is important to managing land development and access on the Florida’s newly design Strategic Intermodal System (SIS) and other state highways. This study documents success stories in comprehensive corridor management and identifies best practices that can be applied by the Florida Department of Transportation, metropolitan planning organizations, and local governments. The …

Technology For Humanitarian Action, Kevin M. Cahill, M.D.

Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs

Humanitarian workers around the world struggle under dangerous conditions. Yet many do not have the technological tools readily available elsewhere to help them realize their mission to provide essential services and save lives.

This book, the fruit of a historic conference, is a practical guide to current technologies that can help relief and humanitarian aid workers succeed. Designed to facilitate needed technology transfer to the humanitarian sector, the essays focus on areas where technology is underused and predict where new technological advances may be applied to relief efforts.

The essays cover essential areas: communications technology and infrastructure support and security. …

Costly State Monitoring And Reserve Requirements, Rangan Gupta Oct 2004

Costly State Monitoring And Reserve Requirements, Rangan Gupta

Economics Working Papers

The paper explores one rationale behind the existence of financial repression, with the latter being represented through the obligatory "high" reserve requirement for the banks. Using an overlapping generation production-economy-monetary model characterized by the possibility of banking crisis, we try and answer whether at all these high reserve requirements are related to discipline the banks. Results indicate that economies with higher probability of banking crisis should optimally choose higher income taxation. The correlation between optimal reserve requirements and probability of crisis is positive only when the social planner has exhausted his ability of income taxation.

Politicizing Sexuality: An Investigation Of Lgbt Rights And The Ngo Sector In Bosnia-Herzegovina, Rachel Kathryn Mercer

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This research was done as a part of the independent study component of a study abroad program in the Balkans through the School for International Training. During the program, I visited several cities throughout the region, but I chose to be based in Sarajevo for the last month and the time frame of this project. Initially, my independent study project proposal focused on the issue of gender and how people in Bosnia-Herzegovina (BiH) understand it both politically and socially. I wanted to study the relationship between women’s non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the new NGO that is working on behalf of …

The Effects Of Malpractice Tort Reform On Defensive Medicine, Katherine D. Hennesy, Heather M. O'Neill Oct 2004

The Effects Of Malpractice Tort Reform On Defensive Medicine, Katherine D. Hennesy, Heather M. O'Neill

Business and Economics Faculty Publications

Positive defensive medicine occurs when physicians order additional tests or procedures primarily to avoid malpractice liability. This paper shows the degree of defensive medicine occurring across states is related to the malpractice environment in the states. As the environment changes due to malpractice tort reform, defensive medicine practices also change. This paper shows the existence of positive defensive medicine and how it adds to total health care expenditures for head trauma victims in 23 states in 2000. Moreover, given different malpractice environments across states, we witness variations in defensive medicine practices leading to differences in health care expenditures.

Psychodynamic Perspectives On Relationship: Implications Of New Findings From Human Attachment And The Neurosciences For Social Work Education, Jerrold R. Brandell, Shoshana Ringel Oct 2004

Psychodynamic Perspectives On Relationship: Implications Of New Findings From Human Attachment And The Neurosciences For Social Work Education, Jerrold R. Brandell, Shoshana Ringel

Social Work Faculty Publications

In this article, the historical significance of the therapeutic relationship in social casework theory and practice is discussed and elaborated on in relation to contemporary psychodynamic theories and constructs, such as the therapeutic alliance, the holding relationship, and selfobject theory. The significant contributions of investigators in such diverse fields as infant attachment, neurobiology, and feminist theory are then discussed in relation to these psychoanalytic ideas. Based in part upon recent research being conducted in such fields, a more central role is proposed for psychodynamic conceptions of relationship in the education of social work clinicians.
