Multiple Testing Procedures For Controlling Tail Probability Error Rates, Sandrine Dudoit, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Merrill D. Birkner
Multiple Testing Procedures For Controlling Tail Probability Error Rates, Sandrine Dudoit, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Merrill D. Birkner
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
The present article discusses and compares multiple testing procedures (MTP) for controlling Type I error rates defined as tail probabilities for the number (gFWER) and proportion (TPPFP) of false positives among the rejected hypotheses. Specifically, we consider the gFWER- and TPPFP-controlling MTPs proposed recently by Lehmann & Romano (2004) and in a series of four articles by Dudoit et al. (2004), van der Laan et al. (2004b,a), and Pollard & van der Laan (2004). The former Lehmann & Romano (2004) procedures are marginal, in the sense that they are based solely on the marginal distributions of the test statistics, i.e., …

Representations Of Anglo-Saxon England In Children's Literature, Kirsti A. Bobo
Representations Of Anglo-Saxon England In Children's Literature, Kirsti A. Bobo
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis surveys the children's literary accounts of Anglo-Saxon history and literature that have been written since the mid-nineteenth century. Authors of different ages emphasize different aspects of Anglo-Saxon culture as societal need for and interpretation of the past change. In studying these changes, I show not only why children's authors would choose to depict the Saxons in their writing, but why medievalists would want to study the resulting literature.
My second chapter looks at children's historical fiction and nonfiction, charting the trends which appear in the literature written between 1850 and the present day. I survey the changes made …
Public Health Nursing Acceptance Of The 5 A’S Protocol For Prenatal Smoking Cessation, Jihong Liu
Public Health Nursing Acceptance Of The 5 A’S Protocol For Prenatal Smoking Cessation, Jihong Liu
Faculty Publications
Oregon’s efforts in tobacco cessation have historically focused on the general population and have depended on quit line services as the primary intervention. The Oregon Smoke Free Mothers and Babies Program (SFMB) was developed in 2002 to focus on public health nurses and prenatal care providers who work with high risk pregnant women. It seeks to increase smoking cessation among low income and other high risk pregnant women by disseminating the U.S. Public Health Service best practices, the 5 A’s (Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist, Arrange) tobacco brief intervention protocol, to public health nurses and prenatal care providers. Interventions included teaching …
The Best Interest Standard: How Broad Judicial Discretion And Influences Of Social And Political Suggestion Have Led To An Abandonment Of The Rule’S Primary Purpose In Child Custody Decisions, Lakeisha J. Johnson
ExpressO
The vital questions in child custody disputes all concern that which is in the best interest of the child. Historically, interpretations of the “best interest” standard have been founded upon presumptions steeped in the notion of natural rights and duties based largely upon a mix of scientific and subjective conclusions regarding gender-based parenting roles and the need to sustain them. My research demonstrates that, as courts attempt to avoid the decisions of the past and submit to the societal will of the present, the modern application of the “best interest of the child” standard has led unexpectedly to an abandonment …

Ranking Usrds Provider-Specific Smrs From 1998-2001, Rongheng Lin, Thomas A. Louis, Susan M. Paddock, Greg Ridgeway
Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers
Provider profiling (ranking, "league tables") is prevalent in health services research. Similarly, comparing educational institutions and identifying differentially expressed genes depend on ranking. Effective ranking procedures must be structured by a hierarchical (Bayesian) model and guided by a ranking-specific loss function, however even optimal methods can perform poorly and estimates must be accompanied by uncertainty assessments. We use the 1998-2001 Standardized Mortality Ratio (SMR) data from United States Renal Data System (USRDS) as a platform to identify issues and approaches. Our analyses extend Liu et al. (2004) by combining evidence over multiple years via an AR(1) model; by considering estimates …

Neutrality Agreements And Card Check Recognition: Prospects For Changing Paradigms, James J. Brudney
Neutrality Agreements And Card Check Recognition: Prospects For Changing Paradigms, James J. Brudney
The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law Working Paper Series
This article is the first comprehensive treatment of neutrality agreements, which are themselves the most important development in Labor Law for decades. The labor movement's new approach to organizing displaces NLRB-supervised elections with negotiated agreements that provide (i) for employers to remain neutral during an upcoming union campaign, and (ii), in most instances, for employees to decide if they want to be represented through signing authorization cards rather than through a secret ballot election. The article demonstrates the substantial, perhaps predominant, role played by this new contractually-based approach over the past 5-10 years; it also explains why so many employers …
The Kidney-Specific Wnk1 Isoform Is Induced By Aldosterone And Stimulates Epithelial Sodium Channel-Mediated Na+ Transport, Anikó Naray-Fejes-Toth, Peter M. Snyder, Géza Fejes-Toth
The Kidney-Specific Wnk1 Isoform Is Induced By Aldosterone And Stimulates Epithelial Sodium Channel-Mediated Na+ Transport, Anikó Naray-Fejes-Toth, Peter M. Snyder, Géza Fejes-Toth
Dartmouth Scholarship
WNK1 belongs to a unique family of Ser/Thr kinases that have been implicated in the control of blood pressure. Intronic deletions in the WNK1 gene result in its overexpression and lead to pseudohypoaldosteronism type II, a disease with salt-sensitive hypertension and hyperkalemia. How overexpression of WNK1 leads to Na+ retention and hypertension is not entirely clear. Similarly, there is no information on the hormonal regulation of expression of WNK kinases. There are two main WNK1 transcripts expressed in the kidney: the originally described “long” WNK1 and a shorter transcript that is specifically expressed in the kidney (KS-WNK1). The goal …

The Impact Of Different Types Of Expert Scientific Testimony On Mock Jurors’ Liability Verdicts, Brian H. Bornstein
The Impact Of Different Types Of Expert Scientific Testimony On Mock Jurors’ Liability Verdicts, Brian H. Bornstein
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Participants in two experiments acted as jurors for a personal-injury case containing different types of expert testimony. In both experiments, the defendant was more likely to obtain a verdict in his favor when his expert presented anecdotal case histories than when the expert presented experimental data. Participants’ liability judgments were correlated with their perceptions of the experts’ credibility (experiments 1 and 2) and were moderated somewhat by their need for cognition and preference for numerical information (experiment 2). The results are discussed in terms of reasoning heuristics such as the base-rate fallacy.

Referent Selection Strategies In Case-Crossover Analyses Of Air Pollution Exposure Data: Implications For Bias, Holly Janes, Lianne Sheppard, Thomas Lumley
Referent Selection Strategies In Case-Crossover Analyses Of Air Pollution Exposure Data: Implications For Bias, Holly Janes, Lianne Sheppard, Thomas Lumley
UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series
The case-crossover design has been widely used to study the association between short term air pollution exposure and the risk of an acute adverse health event. The design uses cases only, and, for each individual, compares exposure just prior to the event with exposure at other control, or “referent” times. By making within-subject comparisons, time invariant confounders are controlled by design. Even more important in the air pollution setting is that, by matching referents to the index time, time varying confounders can also be controlled by design. Yet, the referent selection strategy is important for reasons other than control of …
