Influence Of Aging On Sex Differences In Muscle Fatigability, Sandra K. Hunter, Ashley Critchlow, Roger M. Enoka

Exercise Science Faculty Research and Publications

The purpose of this study was to compare time to task failure for a sustained isometric contraction performed at a submaximal intensity with elbow flexor muscles by young and old men and women. Twenty-seven young (14 men and 13 women, 18–35 yr) and 18 old (10 men and 8 women, 65–80 yr) adults sustained an isometric contraction at 20% of maximal voluntary contraction torque until target torque could no longer be achieved for ≥5 s. Young adults were stronger than old adults (66.8 ± 17.9 vs. 47.7 ± 18.1 N·m, P < 0.05), and men were stronger than women (69.8 ± 17.9 vs. 47.1 ± 15.3 N·m, P < 0.05), with no interaction between age and sex (P > 0.05). Time to task failure was longer …

Upgrading California’S Home Care Workforce: The Impact Of Political Action And Unionization, Candace Howes Nov 2004

Upgrading California’S Home Care Workforce: The Impact Of Political Action And Unionization, Candace Howes

Economics Faculty Publications

Candace Howes examines the recent history of one of California's rapidly growing occupations: home care. As the author's analysis demonstrates, home care has been extensively transformed in recent years through large-scale unionization and coalition-based political action, which have led to major improvements in wages and benefits. Apart from providing many home care workers with better pay, the upgrading of this occupation has also improved the quality of care that clients receive, since higher wages make for lower turnover. The improved working and living conditions that result benefit caregivers and those they serve alike. The author's empirical analysis has obvious ramifications …

Gifts By Fiduciaries By Tax Options And Elections, Jonathan G. Blattmachr, Stephanie E. Heilborn, Mitchell M. Gans Nov 2004

Gifts By Fiduciaries By Tax Options And Elections, Jonathan G. Blattmachr, Stephanie E. Heilborn, Mitchell M. Gans

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Fiduciaries face many tax options and elections during the administration of an estate of trust. The manner in which the fiduciary exercises, or does not exercise, tax elections and options will significantly affect one, some, or all of the beneficiaries. In some cases, it may cause the fiduciary to have made a gift for federal gift tax purposes. This article explores some of the ways in which a fiduciary might be treated as making a gift by exercising or not exercising certain tax elections or options.

Thymosin Alpha 1 In Combination With Interferon Alpha And Ribavirin In Chronic Hepatitis C Patients Who Are Non-Responders Or Relapsers To Interferon Alpha Plus Ribavirin, Z Abbas, S S. Hamid, S Tabassum, W Jafri Nov 2004

Thymosin Alpha 1 In Combination With Interferon Alpha And Ribavirin In Chronic Hepatitis C Patients Who Are Non-Responders Or Relapsers To Interferon Alpha Plus Ribavirin, Z Abbas, S S. Hamid, S Tabassum, W Jafri

Section of Gastroenterology

Objective: Interferon alpha (IFN-alpha) with or without ribavirin is an approved therapy for patients with chronic hepatitis C. However, a sustained response is achieved in less than 40% of all treated cases. Retreatment of relapsers or non-responders usually fails. Thymosin alpha 1 (Ta-1) is a polypeptide with immunomodulatory properties that has been suggested to increase response rates in patients with chronic hepatitis C. The aim of present study was to evaluate the efficacy of a novel triple regimen which includes Ta-1 for relapsers and non-responders to the combination of TA-1 and ribavirin. Methods: In the present study, 11 patients who relapsed …

Development Of Assessment Tasks To Measure The Driving Capabilities Of Persons With Disabilities, Ashwin Upadhyay Nov 2004

Development Of Assessment Tasks To Measure The Driving Capabilities Of Persons With Disabilities, Ashwin Upadhyay

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The need to lead an independent and fuller life is as much a right of a person with physical disability as any other human being. Driving capabilities of a person with a disability have been assessed and evaluated using qualitative techniques. However, certain inadequacies that arise using qualitative measures can be avoided if the assessment is based on quantitative techniques.

The above requirement necessitates the need to devise a method and a system which is focused on the right development of the techniques used in assessing and measuring different capabilities (such as range of motion and force input) of the …

"Studying Up" In Tampa Bay: Globalization And Business Elites, Jennifer Laurel Avery Nov 2004

"Studying Up" In Tampa Bay: Globalization And Business Elites, Jennifer Laurel Avery

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents results of research I conducted during Spring 2003 through an internship with a private economic development organization (called here the TBEDO) that markets the strategically branded, seven-county region know as Tampa Bay domestically and internationally. This internship provided me with the means to conduct research about Tampa Bay's international economy and explore the elusive topic of globalization. It provided me with networking opportunities needed to "study up" on business elites and to understand what their international development agendas are, how they accomplish these objectives, whether they subscribe to the belief that the world has undergone a qualitative …

Grants Mainstreet Project Leakage Study, Jeffrey Mitchell Nov 2004

Grants Mainstreet Project Leakage Study, Jeffrey Mitchell

BBER Publications

This study has two main objectives: 1) to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the retail and services sectors in Grants, and 2) to consider ways to improve conditions faced by businesses in the communitys downtown. The economy of Grants (or any other community) can be understood in terms of its exchange of goods and services with other areas. To the extent that businesses based in Grants sell goods and services to consumers from other areas, money flows into the economy and creates growth. Conversely, to the extent that consumers in Grants buy goods and services from elsewhere, money is …

The Economic Importance Of The Arts And Cultural Industries In Santa Fe County, Lee A. Reynis, Jeffrey Mitchell Nov 2004

The Economic Importance Of The Arts And Cultural Industries In Santa Fe County, Lee A. Reynis, Jeffrey Mitchell

BBER Publications

The McCune Charitable Foundation commissioned the UNM Bureau of Business and Economic Research (BBER) to conduct a three-part study of the arts and cultural industries (ACI) of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Part 1 of the study is a quantitative analysis of the ACI's impact on the economy of Santa Fe County; BBER researchers input county employment and wage data into a model using Implan Pro 2.0. The second part is a qualitative analysis of the relationships between the ACI and the various other sectors of the community. To investigate these dynamics, BBER interviewed nearly 100 ACI and community members. The …

Low Entrepreneurship Activities Among The African-Americans Who Live In The Cleveland Inner City, Daniel Musungu Oruoch Nov 2004

Low Entrepreneurship Activities Among The African-Americans Who Live In The Cleveland Inner City, Daniel Musungu Oruoch

Student Scholarship

The paper discusses business activities in the inner city of Cleveland Ohio, with specific emphasis on business creation and ownership of the African Americans in this location. The paper enables the reader to understand why there has been a lag in the establishment of African American business in comparison to their population in the inner city. In the whole of Cuyahoga County there are 33,000 businesses which have paid employees but only 932 of these are owned by African Americans who constitute 51 per cent of the population, a paltry 2.8 per cent. In the Cleveland inner city, which is …

Private Law And Public Stakes In European Integration: The Case Of Property, Daniela Caruso Nov 2004

Private Law And Public Stakes In European Integration: The Case Of Property, Daniela Caruso

Faculty Scholarship

In European legal discourse, the old public/private divide is experiencing a revival and a transformation. Member States used to claim autonomy in private law matters. Now private law is subsumed into a functionalist logic and can presumptively be harmonised if so demanded by the goal of market integration. States or local constituencies can only resist harmonisation by highlighting the connection between their private laws and those ‘public’ matters still immune from Europeanisation. Property law can effectively illustrate this phenomenon. The written pledge of non-interference with States’ property systems, restated both in the TEC and in the draft Constitution, cannot be …

Why Do Plaintiffs Sue Private Parties Under Section 1983, Jack M. Beermann Nov 2004

Why Do Plaintiffs Sue Private Parties Under Section 1983, Jack M. Beermann

Faculty Scholarship

The subject of this article is why people make federal cases, under section 1983,' out of claims they have against private parties. Section 1983 provides a cause of action against "any person" who, while acting "under color of' state law, subjects or causes the plaintiff to be subjected to a violation of federal constitutional or statutory rights. The requirement that the defendant act under color of law means that the typical section 1983 claim is brought against state and local government officials or entities, not against private individuals or entities. However, there are situations in which a private party (i.e. …

Doing Good, Doing Well, Howard M. Erichson Nov 2004

Doing Good, Doing Well, Howard M. Erichson

Vanderbilt Law Review

On the fiftieth anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education,' it is fitting that we should take account not only of what has become of school desegregation but also of the heroic public interest lawyer figure embodied by Thurgood Marshall. For his role as "the chief litigator for the civil rights movement," Marshall is widely regarded as a preeminent role model for public interest lawyers. Descriptions of Marshall's career as a public interest advocate emphasize not only his ability to "use the legal system as a tool for social change," but also his personal sacrifice as a lawyer who persevered …

Transport Of The Harmful Bloom Alga Aureococcus Anophagefferens By Oceangoing Ships And Coastal Boats, Martina A. Doblin, Linda C. Popels, Kathryn J. Coyne, David A. Hutchins, S. Craig Cary, Fred C. Dobbs

OES Faculty Publications

It is well established that cyst-forming phytoplankton species are transported in ships' ballast tanks. However, there is increasing evidence that other phytoplankton species which do not encyst are also capable of surviving ballast transit. These species have alternative modes of nutrition (hetero- or mixotrophy) and/or are able to survive long-term darkness. In our studies of no-ballast-on-board vessels arriving in the Great Lakes, we tested for the presence of the harmful algal bloom species Aureococcus anophagefferens (brown tide) in residual (i.e., unpumpable) ballast water using methods based on the PCR. During 2001, the brown tide organism was detected in 7 of …

Mental Disorder, Subsistence Strategies, And Victimization Among Gay, Lesbian, And Bisexual Homeless And Runaway Adolescents, Les B. Whitbeck, Xiaojin Chen, Dan R. Hoyt, Kimberly A. Tyler, Kurt D. Johnson

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

This study compares participation in deviant subsistence strategies, street victimization, and lifetime prevalence of five mental disorders (conduct disorder, major depressive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, alcohol abuse, and drug abuse) among heterosexual males and females (n = 366) and gay, lesbian, and bisexual (n = 63) homeless and runaway adolescents from the first wave of a longitudinal study of homeless youth in four Midwestern states. The results indicate that gay, lesbian, and bi¬sexual adolescents were more likely to have been physically and sexually abused by caretakers, were more likely to engage in risky survival strategies when on their own (including …

Valuing Life: A Plea For Disaggregation, Cass R. Sunstein Nov 2004

Valuing Life: A Plea For Disaggregation, Cass R. Sunstein

Duke Law Journal

Each government agency uses a uniform figure to measure the value of a statistical life (VSL). This is a serious mistake. The very theory that underlies current practice calls for far more individuation of the relevant values. According to that theory, VSL should vary across risks. More controversially, VSL should vary across individuals -- even or especially if the result would be to produce a lower number for some people than for others. One practical implication is that a higher value should be given to programs that reduce cancer risks. Another is that government should use a higher VSL for …
