Longitudinal Patterns Of Intimate Partner Violence, Risk, Well-Being, And Employment: Preliminary Findings, Jane C. Murphy, Mary Ann Dutton, Lisa A. Goodman, Dorothy J. Lennig

All Faculty Scholarship

Over 7 months (June 1999 to January 2000), researchers recruited 406 women from 1 of 3 sites in a northeastern city at the point they were seeking help for violence against them by a current or former male partner. Intimate partner violence was measured with a modified version of the Revised Conflict Tactics Scale. Some form of serious violence during the previous year was reported by 88 percent of the participants. By the first 3-month follow-up period, nearly one-third of the participants reported the recurrence of some form of physical violence; 20.4 percent reported an injury; and 18.1 percent reported …

Multiple Experts: Scientific, Medical, Media And Lay Discourses On 'New Genetics', Clare Elizabeth Wilkinson Jan 2004

Multiple Experts: Scientific, Medical, Media And Lay Discourses On 'New Genetics', Clare Elizabeth Wilkinson

Other Faculty of Health Theses

The significance of public relationships with scientific and medical expertise has increasingly been highlighted as an area of importance in governmental policy formulation and scientific activities. Central to this relationship has been the role of the media, frequently depicted as increasing the strained communications between science, medicine and the public in the present UK 'crisis' of expertise. Sociological research has contributed to our understandings of science, medicine, the media and lay knowledge. The research presented in this thesis correlates these contributions. It focuses on 'new genetics' to elicit the views towards communication and understanding expressed by three groups; media professionals, …

Cell Cycle Of Emiliania Huxleyi And Its Effects On Host: Virus Interactions, Rebecca Louise Jefferson Jan 2004

Cell Cycle Of Emiliania Huxleyi And Its Effects On Host: Virus Interactions, Rebecca Louise Jefferson

Other Faculty of Health Theses

Emiliania huxleyi is an ecologically important marine phytoplankton and it is regularly forms large blooms. Viruses are an important agent of mortality in blooms, however, little is known about the host:virus interactions in this system. This project investigated how infection at different stages of the host cell cycle influenced: virus adsorption, infection and production and host lysis and cell cycle. Cultures were infected during the G1 , S or G2 + M phase and monitored for 2 hours for adsorption and infection or monitored for 48 hours for virus production, host lysis and host cell cycle. A three fold increase …

Matching Provision To Needs : The Example Of Victim Support, Lesley Simmonds Jan 2004

Matching Provision To Needs : The Example Of Victim Support, Lesley Simmonds

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The current study is an evaluation of a voluntary sector service, Victim Support. The focal points of this work are the impact of crime upon victims and the extent to which they feel that Victim Support, as a service provider, has helped to restore their sense of equilibrium. In this way the success of a community response to crime is considered. The research was undertaken between 1998 and 2002 and was largely based upon the work of one local scheme; Victim Support, Plymouth. The study included the views of service users (victims of crime) and those of service providers (paid …

Film And The Dartington Experience, David Edward Hilton Jan 2004

Film And The Dartington Experience, David Edward Hilton

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This project is a study of Dartington under the leading question "What is Dartington?' and comprises a number of interlinked methodological phases of enquiry. The first explores Dartington's use of film as a process of documenting its experimental activities, and as a commercial product in the form of the films made and distributed by the Dartington Hall Film Unit. The second strategy engages with archive film materials in the production of compilation videos, which were then developed into a series of Photoworks designed to facilitate a personal interpretation of its particular history. The third approach resulted in the production of …

Melting Into The Margins: The Dis-Appearance Of Normality, Ruth Marie Heholt Jan 2004

Melting Into The Margins: The Dis-Appearance Of Normality, Ruth Marie Heholt

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Melting into the Margins intervenes in the academic and media debate about normality: the white nuclear family and white middle class men. This thesis traces the emergence of the contemporary discourse which suggests that the normal is being displaced into the margins, away from the centre, 'disproved' as a lived condition and shown to be ‘untrue’ as an ideological concept and examines the implications and effects of this discourse. A new discourse of the normal is deemed necessary by the academic disciplines of masculinity and family studies because they argue that we live in a new age of tolerance, equality, …

'Missing Youth' : A Discourse Analysis Of Policy Formulation On 'Child Prostitution', Lyvinia Elleschild Jan 2004

'Missing Youth' : A Discourse Analysis Of Policy Formulation On 'Child Prostitution', Lyvinia Elleschild

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Contemporary policy critics note that the concept of `youth' is of limited use and is `disappearing as a meaningful social category' (Jeffs and Smith 1999: 46). This thesis argues that although the concept of `youth' is flawed, without `youth' young people may be infantilised in policy formulation through being represented and managed as children. In order to argue that the concept of `youth' is both meaningful and useful recent policy formulation on `child prostitution' will be analysed. Throughout the 1990s Barnardo's, the Children's Society and radical feminists campaigned to redefine acts of prostitution by under-eighteens as `child sexual abuse', and …

An Examination Of Psychological Variables Affecting Injured Athletes Prior To Returning To Play, Jessica Marie Meyers Jan 2004

An Examination Of Psychological Variables Affecting Injured Athletes Prior To Returning To Play, Jessica Marie Meyers

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

Injury occurs in a variety of different sports and affects athletes in a number of different ways. Following injury, athletic identity is often lost, bringing upon feelings of anger and depression (Brewer, 1993; Fortunato & Marchant, 1999). As athletes begin to re-enter sports, lower levels of sport-confidence are exhibited (Johnston & Carroll, 1998). Social support has been shown to motivate individuals as well as aid in the overall progress of rehabilitation (Ford & Gordon, 1999; Magyar & Duda, 2000). The purpose of the current study was to determine psychological factors that may influence returning to a sport in which injury …

The Lawyer's Role(S) In Deliberative Democracy, Carrie Menkel-Meadow Jan 2004

The Lawyer's Role(S) In Deliberative Democracy, Carrie Menkel-Meadow

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In this paper I will explore the idea of a "neutral" lawyer who may have neither "client" (in the conventional sense of client) to represent nor advocacy to perform, yet still be functioning fully as a lawyer or "learned professional" schooled in the law. Indeed, in this paper I will suggest that lawyers may be especially useful in performing a variety of "new" functions that depart from traditional conceptions of the lawyer's role, but which lawyers may be especially well suited to perform. It may be counter-cultural to think of lawyers as "consensus builders," rather than as advocates or makers …

The Dark Side Of Grutter, Girardeau A. Spann Jan 2004

The Dark Side Of Grutter, Girardeau A. Spann

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Liberals have generally cheered the Supreme Court's decision in Grutter v. Bollinger as validating the continued use of affirmative action in the struggle against racial injustice. But the Supreme Court's modern race cases rest on a misunderstanding of the nature of contemporary racial discrimination. From Brown, to Bakke, to Grutter, the Court has advanced a colorblind conception of racial equality that treats race-conscious affirmative action as constitutionally suspect, because it deviates from an aspirational baseline of race neutrality that lies at the core of the equal protection clause. However, race neutrality is a hopelessly artificial concept in …

Rare, Highly Pyrimethamine-Resistant Alleles Of The Plasmodium Falciparum Dihydrofolate Reductase Gene From 5 African Sites, S.J. Bates, P.A. Winstanley, W.M. Watkins, A. Alloueche, J. Bwika, T.C. Happi, P.G. Kremsner, J.G. Kublin, Zul Premji, C.H. Sibley

Pathology, East Africa

In eastern and southern Africa, there has been a rapid increase in the prevalence of alleles with mutations in the Plasmodium falciparum dihydrofolate reductase gene (dhfr) associated with increased risk of clinical failure of sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (S/P). Molecular methods for surveillance of these mutations are now widespread, but the usual analysis detects only the most prevalent allele in a polyclonal sample. We used a yeast-expression system to identify rare, highly pyrimethamine-resistant alleles of dhfr in isolates from 5 African countries-Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Gabon, and Nigeria. Only the isolates from Nigeria yielded significant numbers of novel resistant alleles, and only 1 of …

Averting A Malaria Disaster In Africa - Where Does The Buck Stop?, C.J.M. Whitty, R. Allan, V. Wiseman, S. Ochola, M.V. Nakyanzi-Mugisha, B. Vonhm, M. Mwita, C. Miaka, A. Oloo, Zul Premji, C. Burgess, T.K. Mutabingwa

Pathology, East Africa

The serious threat posed by the spread of drug-resistant malaria in Africa has been widely acknowledged. Chloroquine resistance is now almost universal, and resistance to the successor drug, sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP), is growing rapidly. Combination therapy has been suggested as being an available and potentially lasting solution to this impending crisis. However, the current cost of combination therapy, and especially that of artemisinin combination therapy (ACT), is potentially a serious drawback, even if a significant part of its cost is passed on to the end-user. If the question of cost is not successfully addressed this could lead to adverse results from …

Higher Il-10 Levels Are Associated With Less Effective Clearance Of Plasmodium Falciparum Parasites, E. Hugosson, S.M. Montgomery, Zul Premji, M. Troye-Blomberg, A. Bjorkman Jan 2004

Higher Il-10 Levels Are Associated With Less Effective Clearance Of Plasmodium Falciparum Parasites, E. Hugosson, S.M. Montgomery, Zul Premji, M. Troye-Blomberg, A. Bjorkman

Pathology, East Africa

The implications of high levels of the immune regulatory cytokine IL-10 in Plasmodium falciparum malaria are unclear. IL-10 may down-regulate pro-inflammatory responses and also exacerbate disease by inhibiting anti-parasitic immune functions. To study possible inhibiting effects on parasite clearance, IL-10 plasma levels were determined in 104 Tanzanian children, 1 to 4 years old, with acute uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria, and analysed for association with parasite densities during 3 days of anti-malarial treatment. Higher baseline IL-10 plasma levels were associated with statistically significantly higher parasite densities after 24, 48 and 72 h of treatment. These associations could not be explained by …

Licensing Health Care Professionals: Has The United States Outlived The Need For Medical Licensure?, Gregory Dolin Jan 2004

Licensing Health Care Professionals: Has The United States Outlived The Need For Medical Licensure?, Gregory Dolin

All Faculty Scholarship

With an expanding market for what is now known as "complimentary and alternative" medicine (CAM), states are increasingly facing the issue of who can and who should be allowed to practice medicine. Of necessity, this question also concerns whom patients may see to treat their ailments.

This paper will argue that the struggle to define who is and who is not licensed to practice medicine is rather fruitless and will always leave patients with less choice than they desire. Part II will review the history of licensure in the United States. Parts III and IV will focus on benefits and …

Time To Enter A "Do Not Resuscitate" Order On The National Resident Matching Program's Chart, Gregory Dolin

All Faculty Scholarship

This article focuses on the NRMP system and argues that the process is neither efficient nor pro-competitive. This article argues that Congress erred in bestowing an antitrust exemption on the NRMP and the participating institutions.

This article suggests that although the system may have been necessary to check the problem of early recruiting that was pervasive in the 1950s (similar to the one that plagued the federal judiciary until just two years ago), the system has outlived its usefulness. Part II will explain the Match's history and function and will discuss how the system makes participation in the Match inevitable …

Early Literacy And Making Sense In An Inclusive Preschool Classroom, Patresa A. Hartman Jan 2004

Early Literacy And Making Sense In An Inclusive Preschool Classroom, Patresa A. Hartman

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this ethnographic study was to build understanding regarding the meaning and role of early literacy as a meaningful interaction in one inclusive preschool classroom. I was specifically interested in the idea of literacy as a social construction - as an interaction with one's environment for the purpose of making sense of it. Furthermore, I investigated the way this construction facilitated or denied one child's citizenship in the classroom community, which is located within an early childhood center in a mid-sized, Midwestern city. My topic, examining early literacy as a sense-making interaction, lent itself quite naturally to qualitative …

Music That Teaches, Susan L. Carroll Jan 2004

Music That Teaches, Susan L. Carroll

Graduate Research Papers

Not many materials for librarians are available in a participatory form. Most materials are available for presentation. But research has shown that affective learning, which allows students to participate, has had a positive effect on young children learning their basic skills. This research project will be used for participation. The research project used the standards, benchmarks, and objectives found in library curricula for kindergarten through third graders. These standards were the basis of the lyrics to the songs. Music was composed to complement the lyrics and a songbook was designed which included these songs, illustrations, and suggestions for activities to …

Toward A More Perfect Union: The Road To Marriage Equality For Same-Sex Couples, Jennifer L. Levi Jan 2004

Toward A More Perfect Union: The Road To Marriage Equality For Same-Sex Couples, Jennifer L. Levi

Faculty Scholarship

The Author believes that civil unions have become synonymous with inequality. In this posture, the term inequality should be descriptive rather than subjective. She argues that civil unions relegate gay and lesbian couples to second-class status. However characterized or defined, civil unions are not marriages. Those two statuses are not equivalent; they are not equal. Within that framework, in order for any one person to decide where he or she stands on the issue of whether gay and lesbian couples should be entitled to marriage, civil unions, something else, or nothing, he or she must first understand why marriage matters …

The Convergence Of Traditional Higher Education And E-Learning: Organisational, Societal, Technological And Pedagogical Trends, Gearóid Ó Súilleabháin Jan 2004

The Convergence Of Traditional Higher Education And E-Learning: Organisational, Societal, Technological And Pedagogical Trends, Gearóid Ó Súilleabháin

Theses

The thesis is about the coming together of two traditions and how they are both changing dynamically in relation to each other, giving rise to a number of discernable organisational, societal, technological and pedagogical trends. Each tradition is examined in turn in the first two chapters, which deal with issues such as what the definitional characteristics of each tradition are and what factors have determined them. Organisational and societal trends in the convergence of traditional higher education and e-learning, as described in chapter three, highlight the tensions between the two traditions, as evidenced in the specific challenges e- learning represents …
