Women, Globalization And Law: A Change Of World, Barbara Stark Jan 2004

Women, Globalization And Law: A Change Of World, Barbara Stark

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Globalization affects the social and political construction of a gendered "change of world" in four distinct but overlapping ways. First, globalization propels women into the public sphere of the marketplace. Like men, women need cash to survive in a global economy. Second, related but distinct, globalization weakens the public/private distinction. Traditional boundaries between the workplace and the home, the public sphere of the market and the private sphere of the family, become increasingly porous. Third, globalization increases women's visibility -through media exposure and through a growing body of sex-disaggregated UN data and its dissemination through the Internet. Researchers have noted …

In Praise Of Statutes Of Limitations In Sex Offense Cases, James Herbie Difonzo Jan 2004

In Praise Of Statutes Of Limitations In Sex Offense Cases, James Herbie Difonzo

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

This Article explores what happens when spectacular scientific breakthroughs are administered within a criminal justice system whose stance of impartiality is often undermined by sloppy or tainted analysis and testimony as it copes with the pressure to resolve an enormous backlog of DNA samples. A hypothetical case involving the problems an attorney might face in representing a client many years after an accusation of rape serves as the frame for a discussion of both the serious issues and suggested reforms. After this Introduction, Part II reconsiders the policy behind statutes of limitations, both as originally understood and in light of …

Labor And Employment Law In Two Transitional Decades, Theodore J. St. Antoine Jan 2004

Labor And Employment Law In Two Transitional Decades, Theodore J. St. Antoine

Articles

Labor law became labor and employment law during the past several decades. The connotation of "labor law" is the regulation of union-management relations and that was the focus from the 1930s through the 1950s. In turn, voluntary collective bargaining was supposed to be the method best suited for setting the terms and conditions of employment for the nation's work force. Since the 1960s, however, the trend has been toward more governmental intervention to ensure nondiscrimination, safety and health, pensions and other fringe benefits, and so on. "Employment law" is now the term for the direct federal or state regulation of …

Hydrologic Variability, Organic Matter Supply, Anddenitrification In The Garonne River Ecosystem, Michelle A. Baker, P. Vervier

Biology Faculty Publications

1. Groundwater nitrate contamination has become a worldwide problem as increasing amounts of nitrogen fertilisers are used in agriculture. Alluvial groundwater is uniquely juxtaposed between soils and streams. Hydrological connections among these subsystems regulate nutrient cycling.

2. We measured denitrification using an in situ acetylene‐block assay in a nitrate‐contaminated portion of the Garonne River catchment along a gradient of surface water–ground water mixing during high (snowmelt) and low flow.

3. During high flow (mid‐April to early June) the water table rose an average of 35 cm and river water penetrated the subsurface to a great extent in monitoring wells. Denitrification …

Thresholds Of Significance, Carmela M. Campbell Jan 2004

Thresholds Of Significance, Carmela M. Campbell

Master's Projects

This report provides a comprehensive understanding of environmental “Thresholds of Significance” by including a broad discussion of the general concepts associated with thresholds and by also providing a sample thresholds document for projects that occur on unincorporated Santa Clara County lands. The California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) defines a thresholds as an identifiable quantitative, qualitative or performance level of a particular environmental effect. Non-compliance with a threshold results in a determination that a particular project may have a significant effect on the environment and necessitates preparation of an Environmental Impact Report.

CEQA encourages public agencies to adopt thresholds to standardize …

The Association Of Maternal Mobility History And Birth Outcomes Among Singleton Infants Born To United States Resident Mothers Of Mexican Origin, 1995-1999, Martha Slay Wingate Jan 2004

The Association Of Maternal Mobility History And Birth Outcomes Among Singleton Infants Born To United States Resident Mothers Of Mexican Origin, 1995-1999, Martha Slay Wingate

All ETDs from UAB

Various studies have observed that infants born to foreign-born women have better birth outcomes (lower rates of preterm, low birth weight, and infant mortality) than those delivered to U.S.-born women. Much attention has been given to the “healthy migrant effect” but no studies have examined this theory in an internally migrant population. The study purpose is to examine the association of maternal mobility history and birth outcomes among infants delivered in the U.S. while considering the influences of geographic location and socio-cultural composition, barriers that might make less healthy individuals less likely to migrate. Maternal mobility history (MMH), which refers …
