Plan Design And 401(K) Savings Outcomes, James J. Choi, David Laibson, Brigitte C. Madrian Jan 2004

Plan Design And 401(K) Savings Outcomes, James J. Choi, David Laibson, Brigitte C. Madrian

Faculty Publications

We assess the impact of 401(k) plan design on four different 401(k) savings outcomes: participation in the 401(k) plan, the distribution of employee contribution rates, asset allocation, and cash distributions. We show that plan design can have an important effect on all of these savings outcomes. This suggests an important role for both employers in determining how to structure their 401(k) plans and government regulators in creating institutions that encourage or discourage particular aspects of 401(k) plan design.

Preparation And Characterization Of Ceramic Sensors For Use At Elevated Temperatures, Tao You Jan 2004

Preparation And Characterization Of Ceramic Sensors For Use At Elevated Temperatures, Tao You

Open Access Dissertations

Ceramic ITO strain sensors were prepared by reactive sputtering in various nitrogen/oxygen/argon partial pressures. The thickness of the active ITO strain elements played a significant role in the high temperature stability and piezoresistive properties, specifically, these results indicated that both gauge factor and drift rate were affected by the thickness of ITO films comprising the active strain elements. The influence of nitrogen in the reactive sputtered ITO films on the microstructure and the high temperature piezoresistive properties was also investigated. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed a partially sintered microstructure consisting of a contiguous network of sub-micron ITO particles with well-defined …

Isolation Of Marine Metabolites From Symbiodinium Species Of Dinoflagellates, Katherine Evelyn Drainville-Higgins Jan 2004

Isolation Of Marine Metabolites From Symbiodinium Species Of Dinoflagellates, Katherine Evelyn Drainville-Higgins

Open Access Dissertations

The initial scope of this project was to determine if the symbiotic dinoflagellate, Symbiodinium sp., produces palytoxin, the highly lethal and complex compound originally found in the zoanthid, Palythoa spp. Through the examination of cell extracts made, this compound was not found. Instead, other secondary metabolites were isolated and their structures elucidated. The following is a summary of accomplishments. (1) The conditions to grow several strains of Symbiodinium organisms were investigated for the necessary extensive culturing required for cellular extraction. As a result, an isolate from Palythoa sp. obtained in Puerto Rico was successfully cultured. Previously, sustaining cultures of Palythoa …

Remembering Oscar Schachter, Lori Fisler Damrosch Jan 2004

Remembering Oscar Schachter, Lori Fisler Damrosch

Faculty Scholarship

In this issue of the Columbia Law Review and also in the pages of journals that specialize in international and transnational law,' my colleagues and I celebrate the professional accomplishments of Oscar Schachter as a superlative scholar and public servant, as well as his qualities as a human being. Here, I will speak mainly in the personal rather than professional voice. One of the reasons I want to reminisce rather than eulogize is the very impossibility of putting the proper frame on the superlatives.

Relationship Between Self-Reported Weight Management And Perceived Norms Of Weight Management In Scholastic Wrestlers, Sara J. Camaerei Jan 2004

Relationship Between Self-Reported Weight Management And Perceived Norms Of Weight Management In Scholastic Wrestlers, Sara J. Camaerei

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Wrestling is unique in that it is the only sport that requires opponents to be matched by weight. Because two athletes at an almost equal weight compete against each other, wrestlers participate at the lowest weight class possible, which frequently leads wrestlers to engage in unhealthy and dangerous weight loss practices. Social norms theory suggests that much of an individual's behavior is influenced by perceptions of how members of a social group think and act. If these perceptions are inaccurate, and over-estimates of the unhealthy behaviors of others occur, an individual is likely to engage in such behaviors himself. One …

Gerry Spence's The Smoking Gun As A Teaching Tool, Dana K. Cole Jan 2004

Gerry Spence's The Smoking Gun As A Teaching Tool, Dana K. Cole

Akron Law Faculty Publications

The Smoking Gun, is the true story of a woman and her teenage son charged in what appeared to be a hopeless murder case. At Mr. Spence’s request, Professor Cole wrote a companion manual for use by law professors interested in using Spence’s book in teaching criminal law, criminal procedure, clinical practicum, ethics, evidence or trial advocacy. The companion manual is a chapter-by-chapter synopsis of the book that highlights teachable topics and analyzes some of the skills and techniques described in the book.

Jurisprudential Revolution Unlocking Human Potential In Lawrence And Grutter, Wilson R. Huhn Jan 2004

Jurisprudential Revolution Unlocking Human Potential In Lawrence And Grutter, Wilson R. Huhn

Akron Law Faculty Publications

The decisions of the Supreme Court in Lawrence v. Texas and Grutter v. Bollinger, stripped to their bare holdings, have little immediate effect on existing law. After Grutter, colleges and graduate schools will continue to take race into account in admitting students to enroll a diverse student body, just as they have done for the past quarter century in conformity with Justice Lewis Powell's opinion in Regents of the University of California v. Bakke. After Lawrence, laws against gay sex may no longer be enforced, but only a handful of states still had these laws on the books at the …

Indigenous Voices And American Politics, David E. Wilkins Jan 2004

Indigenous Voices And American Politics, David E. Wilkins

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

President [Bush], in a convoluted response to a question on the meaning of tribal sovereignty (essentially the inherent right of indigenous nations to self-governance) posed by a minority journalist on August 6, told the 7,500 assembled journalists that "tribal sovereignty means that it's sovereign. You're a—you've been given sovereignty and you're viewed as a sovereign entity. And therefore the relationship between the federal government and tribes is one between sovereign entities."

Nevertheless, these two statements by the leading presidential candidates are big deals for Indian nations. They provide a measure of overt national political recognition for several of the most …

Prescribing The Right Dose Of Peer Review For The Endangered Species Act, J.B. Ruhl Jan 2004

Prescribing The Right Dose Of Peer Review For The Endangered Species Act, J.B. Ruhl

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

....what I examine here is whether scientific-style peer review, depending on how it is dosed out, could be counterproductive for environmental law.The use of peer review as a component of regulatory procedure has not received much discrete attention in environmental law literature, but it is truly the sleeping dog of the "sound science" movement. Understanding this concept requires some background on science and administrative law. The "sound science" movement, as its name suggests, advocates that environmental law decisions be based principally on scientific information and conclusions that have been derived through the rigorous, unbiased practice of science. Science is generally …

A Survey Of Antibiotic Resistance Among Coliform Bacteria Isolated From The Missouri River, Sara E. Mcdonnell, Amy M. Treonis Jan 2004

A Survey Of Antibiotic Resistance Among Coliform Bacteria Isolated From The Missouri River, Sara E. Mcdonnell, Amy M. Treonis

Biology Faculty Publications

The prevalence of antibiotic resistant microorganisms in the environment is not well known but could represent a challenge to maintaining public health in the future. Fecal waste from livestock facilities, where antibiotics are routinely used, is recognized as a significant source of pollution to surface waters in the United States. We collected water from the Missouri River across a winter to spring seasonal change in order to survey the density of coliform bacteria. We tested bacterial isolates for resistance to penicillin, tetracycline, ampicillin, erythromycin, and ciprofloxacin. Coliform density in Missouri River water generally was high throughout the study (0-405 cfu …
