Using Pharmacy Claims Data To Evaluate Adherence And Persistence With Prescribed Medications In Patients With Diabetes Mellitus, Pamela J. Johnson Jan 2004

Using Pharmacy Claims Data To Evaluate Adherence And Persistence With Prescribed Medications In Patients With Diabetes Mellitus, Pamela J. Johnson

Open Access Dissertations

Background: Patients with diabetes mellitus often take prescription medications throughout their lives to maintain glycemic control and/or treat co-morbid conditions such as dyslipidemia. The effect of glycemic control and reductions in lipid levels in the prevention of diabetes-related complications has been demonstrated. However, one important factor affecting the pharmacological management of glycemic control and dyslipidemia is adherence and persistence (i.e., continuous use) with treatment. Objective: The objective of this research was to 1) use measurements of medication availability, gaps in therapy, and surplus medication to assess adherence with sulfonylurea medications, evaluate the relationship between these measures, and examine patient- and …

Sovereign Debt Reform And The Best Interest Of Creditors, William W. Bratton, G. Mitu Gulati Jan 2004

Sovereign Debt Reform And The Best Interest Of Creditors, William W. Bratton, G. Mitu Gulati

Vanderbilt Law Review

This Article is about boilerplate language located at the back of contracts drafted by the world's largest law firms. The clauses in question are process provisions that regulate the amendment of sovereign debt contracts. These paragraphs have been drafted and redrafted by generations of corporate lawyers, yet they have changed little in their broad outlines in more than a century of use. Now they take center stage in the global financial arena, where they govern billions of dollars (and pounds, euros, and yen) of sovereign debt in default and billions more in imminent risk of default. Officials, academics, and even …

The Misappropriation Of Trust Fund Taxes Under The Guise Of Reasonable Cause, P. Prestin Weidner Jan 2004

The Misappropriation Of Trust Fund Taxes Under The Guise Of Reasonable Cause, P. Prestin Weidner

Vanderbilt Law Review

Employers are generally required to withhold income, Social Security, and Medicare taxes from their employees' paychecks. Employers hold these taxes "in trust" until they are deposited or otherwise paid over to the government. Since one of the most common problems faced by owners and managers of businesses is the lack of adequate cash to satisfy their numerous immediate obligations, this system creates a temptation for the employer to use the withheld funds to cover its costs. Short-term bank loans are often either unavailable or unaffordable, and the employer's own debtors may be unable to pay or not yet obligated to …

Structural Studies Of The Role Of Iron Oxide In Environmental Catalysis, Aisha Ali Saif Rashid Al-Nayeli Jan 2004

Structural Studies Of The Role Of Iron Oxide In Environmental Catalysis, Aisha Ali Saif Rashid Al-Nayeli

Theses

This thesis presents several fundamental studies of structure-reactivity relationships between pure iron oxides, supported and composite oxides specifically in relation to the decomposition of carbon tetrachloride, CCI4. A series of iron oxides were synthesized and characterized using infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy to establish their composition spectroscopically, using BET surface area measurements to determine their surface areas and X-ray diffraction powder (XRD) experiments to measure their structural parameters.

A new method was then developed to decompose CCl4 at a lower temperature than previously found, choosing the optimum catalyst. The effects of varying the temperature on the CCl4 decomposition …

Laboratory Investigation Of Transport And Treatment Of Chromium In Groundwater At Liwa District, Abu Dhabi, Wali-Ur-Rahman Din Badshah Jan 2004

Laboratory Investigation Of Transport And Treatment Of Chromium In Groundwater At Liwa District, Abu Dhabi, Wali-Ur-Rahman Din Badshah

Theses

Groundwater quality is a critical aspect affecting utilization of this source for certain purposes. In the UAE, utilization of groundwater for domestic purposes is well practiced. While the quality of groundwater at some locations does not permit direct utilization of this source, groundwater, in many cases, is mixed with desalinated water at certain proportion before being disinfected and then distributed to customers.

Groundwater of Liwa aquifer contains high level of Cr(VI) which is believed to originate from natural sources. However, little has been done to investigate the fate of this contaminant. Spreading of chromium to nearby aquifers may render the …

Transport Of Pesticides Through Soil Columns From Al-Ain Area, United Arab Emirates, Huda Ateeq Al Hassani Jan 2004

Transport Of Pesticides Through Soil Columns From Al-Ain Area, United Arab Emirates, Huda Ateeq Al Hassani

Theses

Proper management of pesticides application in the UAE is greatly lacking, causing waste of resources and environmental concerns due to the excessive use of these chemicals. It has been reported that the rate of pesticides use in UAE reaches about 10 kg/hectare/yr, posing a potential threat to the quality of water in underlying aquifers. Little, however, is known about the mobility of applied pesticides in the UAE subsurface environment and the impact of these pesticides on soil and groundwater quality.

The aim of this study was to gain an understanding of the fate and mobility of pesticides in the UAE …

Targeting Outcomes Of Programs: A Hierarchy For Targeting Outcomes And Evaluating Their Achievement, Kay Rockwell, Claude Bennett Jan 2004

Targeting Outcomes Of Programs: A Hierarchy For Targeting Outcomes And Evaluating Their Achievement, Kay Rockwell, Claude Bennett

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

Targeting Outcomes of Programs (TOP) focuses on outcomes in planning, implementing, and evaluating programs. TOP is based on a hierarchy that integrates program evaluation within the program development process. TOP uses this simple framework to target specific outcomes in program development and then to assess the degree to which the outcome targets are reached. Intended Audience: People who develop and administer information, education, and training programs on high priority problems or issues in today's society. TOP is based on a theoretically sound framework that has been tested, revised and refined, and widely used over the past 20 years (Bennett, 1975 …

Fear And Loathing In Massachusetts: Same-Sex Marriage And Some Lessons From The History Of Marriage And Divorce, Joanna L. Grossman Jan 2004

Fear And Loathing In Massachusetts: Same-Sex Marriage And Some Lessons From The History Of Marriage And Divorce, Joanna L. Grossman

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

When Massachusetts became the first and only state in the union to issue legal marriage licenses to same-sex couples last May, the state's Governor, Mitt Romney, warned that "Massachusetts should not become the Las Vegas of same-sex marriage." Romney's warning makes sense only as a reference to Las Vegas' reputation for the "quickie" divorce - a heavily disparaged historical practice in which residents of other states would seek a divorce in Nevada because their home states would not grant them one, at least not on the terms or at the pace they desired. This essay retraces the history of divorce …

Job Security Without Equality: The Family And Medical Leave Act Of 1993, Joanna L. Grossman Jan 2004

Job Security Without Equality: The Family And Medical Leave Act Of 1993, Joanna L. Grossman

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

This piece reevaluates the passage and implementation of the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) against the egalitarian ideal described by the Supreme Court in its recent decision in Nevada Department of Human Resources v. Hibbs. The Court in Hibbs upheld the FMLA against an Eleventh Amendment challenge, concluding that Congress enacted the law as a congruent and proportional remedy to the longstanding history of state-sponsored discrimination against working women. According to the Court, Congress enacted the FMLA to remedy a longstanding history of discrimination against working women by forcing employers to offer caretaking leave on gender-neutral terms. At least …

Contracting With Tortfeasors: Mandatory Arbitration Clauses And Personal Injury Claims, Elizabeth G. Thornburg Jan 2004

Contracting With Tortfeasors: Mandatory Arbitration Clauses And Personal Injury Claims, Elizabeth G. Thornburg

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

People thinking about contractual arbitration clauses usually envision the resulting disputes as contractual in nature. However, there is also a group of cases in which the clauses are used to compel arbitration of personal injury claims. This article examines those cases, including the impact of the Federal Arbitration Act on their enforcement. Next, the article considers the ways in which these pre-dispute, mandatory arbitration clauses can disturb the traditional values of procedural justice, contractual fairness, and the enforcement of tort-based duties. Finally, the article proposes changes in the law of arbitration and evaluates whether such changes are politically feasible.
