Information Markets, Administrative Decisionmaking, And Predictive Cost-Benefit Analysis, Michael B. Abramowicz Jan 2004

Information Markets, Administrative Decisionmaking, And Predictive Cost-Benefit Analysis, Michael B. Abramowicz

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

FutureMAP, a project of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, was to involve experiments to determine whether information markets could improve Defense Department decisionmaking. Information markets are securities markets used to derive information from the prices of securities whose liquidation values are contingent on future events. The government intended to use such a market to assess the probabilities of potential political assassinations, and the indelicacy of this potential application contributed to a controversy leading to the cancellation of the program. In this Article, Professor Abramowicz assesses whether information markets in theory could be useful to administrative agencies, and it concludes …

The Effects Of Job Embeddedness On Organizational Citizenship, Job Performance, Volitional Absences, And Voluntary Turnover, Thomas W. Lee, Terence R. Mitchell, Chris J. Sablynski, James P. Burton, Brooks C. Holtom Jan 2004

The Effects Of Job Embeddedness On Organizational Citizenship, Job Performance, Volitional Absences, And Voluntary Turnover, Thomas W. Lee, Terence R. Mitchell, Chris J. Sablynski, James P. Burton, Brooks C. Holtom

Eberhardt School of Business Faculty Articles

This study extends theory and research on job embeddedness, which was disaggregated into its two major subdimensions, on-the-job and off-the-job embeddedness. As hypothesized, regression analyses revealed that off-the-job embeddedness was significantly predictive of subsequent "voluntary turnover" and volitional absences, whereas on-the-job embeddedness was not. Also as hypothesized, on-the-job embeddedness was significantly predictive of organizational citizenship and job performance, whereas off-the-job embeddedness was not. In addition, embeddedness moderated the effects of absences, citizenship, and performance on turnover. Implications are discussed.

The Relationship Of Consideration And Structure Leadership Styles To Employee Job Satisfaction In Nonprofit Child Care Organizations, Stephanie L. Brooke Jan 2004

The Relationship Of Consideration And Structure Leadership Styles To Employee Job Satisfaction In Nonprofit Child Care Organizations, Stephanie L. Brooke

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This study examined the relationship between leadership style, as measured by the Leadership Opinion Questionnaire, and job satisfaction, global job satisfaction, and satisfaction with supervision, as measured by the Job Satisfaction Survey. Past research suggests that leaders with a considerate style of leadership are associated with greater job satisfaction compared to leaders who initiate structure. Although many studies of leadership style have been conducted in for-profit organizations, the objective of this research was to better understand the relationship of leadership style to job satisfaction in nonprofit child care centers. Eight directors in nonprofit child care centers in Rochester, New York, …

The development of local leaders in neighborhood, grassroots, or other voluntary organizations has received little attention until recently. Previous studies of empowerment of local leaders have noted …

Data from 418 non-Hispanics was used to develop (N = 209) and validate (N = 209) each of the measures. Data from 155 Hispanics was used to further successfully validate the measures, and explore differences in this group with the non-Hispanic group. …

Trip-Ping Over Business Method Patents, Vincent Chiappetta Jan 2004

Trip-Ping Over Business Method Patents, Vincent Chiappetta

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

Professor Chiappetta argues that the current effort to expand substantive international patent law harmonization to include business method patenting is ill-conceived and unsupportable. Such patents cannot be justified on the economic incentive grounds supporting the Western regimes. They are not part of the existing TRIPS agreement, and under present circumstances they should not be added. Any future agreement, bi-lateral or multi-lateral (including an extension of TRIPS), must be based on a better calibrated form of protection (less than patent) and should occur only after the persistent normative differences and the distributional consequences of international substantive harmonization have been addressed.

A Continuing Whimsical Search For The True Meaning Of The Term “Product” In Products Liability Litigation, Charles E. Cantú Jan 2004

A Continuing Whimsical Search For The True Meaning Of The Term “Product” In Products Liability Litigation, Charles E. Cantú

Faculty Articles

More than a decade has elapsed since an initial attempt was made to discern the true meaning of the term product in products liability litigation. At the time, a brief history of events leading up to the adoption of Section 402A of the Restatement (Second) of Torts was outlined, and it was emphasized that what had at first seemed so simple subsequently proved to be somewhat complex.

An examination of cases involving the sales/service transaction, as well as those involving real estate, blood, electricity, component parts, water, computer software, and ideas, sometimes held that what was involved was a product. …

Insurance Decisions - A Survey And Empirical Analysis, Willy E. Rice Jan 2004

Insurance Decisions - A Survey And Empirical Analysis, Willy E. Rice

Faculty Articles

During the period from June 2002 to July 2003, the Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit decided twenty-two appeals originating in eight federal district courts. Certainly, the greater majority of the insurance appeals involved recurring substantive and procedural conflicts. Major disagreements about the interpretation and enforcement of insurance contracts were before the court. Also, federal preemption questions and conflicts over subject-matter jurisdiction appeared in several cases. Furthermore, the Fifth Circuit addressed one case of first impression, and on remand from the Supreme Court, the appellate court modified and reinstated portions of a vacated opinion. For the most part, the …

Maternity Rights In Mexico: With References To The Spanish And American Codes, Roberto Rosas Jan 2004

Maternity Rights In Mexico: With References To The Spanish And American Codes, Roberto Rosas

Faculty Articles

Mexico, the United States, and Spain approach maternity rights and benefits from differing perspectives within diverse legal frameworks. Maternity and pregnancy deserve legal protection in the workplace by virtue of their vital role to society. Women worldwide share a concern for maternity rights and benefits, but countries approach legal rights related to motherhood and pregnancy from differing perspectives.

The laws in Mexico and Spain regarding maternity share many similarities, including protecting not only the mother and fetus, but also the infant and father. In contrast, the laws in the United States solely protect the mother and unborn fetus. The laws …
