Congenital Duodenal Diaphragm In Eight Children, Akhtar Nawaz, Hilal Matta, Alic Jacobsz, Omar Trad, Ahmed H. Al Salem Jan 2004

Congenital Duodenal Diaphragm In Eight Children, Akhtar Nawaz, Hilal Matta, Alic Jacobsz, Omar Trad, Ahmed H. Al Salem

Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology

Background: Congenital duodenal obstruction (CDO) is a common and usually easy to diagnose cause of intestinal obstruction in the newborn, except when the cause of the obstruction is a duodenal diaphragm. We describe our experience with eight children who had intrinsic duodenal obstruction secondary to a duodenal diaphragm.
Methods: The medical records of 22 children with the diagnosis of congenital intrinsic duodenal obstruction were reviewed for age at diagnosis, sex, gestation, birth weight, clinical features, associated anomalies, method of diagnosis, treatment and outcome. Operative findings and procedures were obtained from the operative notes.
Results: Eight of the 22 children (36.4%) …

Isolated And Politicized: The Nlrb's Uncertain Future The National Labor Relations Board In Comparative Context: Introduction, James J. Brudney

Faculty Scholarship

The National Labor Relations Board has managed to remain unusually detached or isolated in its decision-making even as it has come to operate in an openly partisan manner. There is a certain paradoxical quality to the coexistence of these two descriptors for Board conduct: isolation in agency performance ordinarily suggests a neutral separation from the political process whereas politicization implies a close connection to the elected branches. The explanation for this odd pairing involves a number of factors: some reflect political realities beyond the agency's ability to control, others relate to the structure of the NLRA, and still others are …

Putting Humpty Dumpty Together Again: What's Right With Betsy, Elaine R. Silliman, Louise C. Wilkinson, Robin L. Danzak Jan 2004

Putting Humpty Dumpty Together Again: What's Right With Betsy, Elaine R. Silliman, Louise C. Wilkinson, Robin L. Danzak

Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

Betsy is a telling case of the struggles and victories of a youngster who has grappled with a language learning disability for most of her 17 years. Her story is a fitting way to conclude this volume because she represents how a child with motivation and resilience can confront the educational and interpersonal obstacles she has experienced. Her story, which predates the passage of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 and the 1997 Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, is a metaphor for the ongoing debates in theory and practice about the meanings of a learning disability versus a …

Microscale Investigation Of Thermo-Fluid Transport In The Transition Fil, Region Of An Evaporating Capillary Meniscus Using A Microgravity Environment, Kenneth D. Kihm, Jeffrey S. Allen, Kevin P. Hallinan, David M. Pratt Jan 2004

Pratt

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

In order to enhance the fundamental understanding of thin film evaporation and thereby improve the critical design concept for two-phase heat transfer devices, microscale heat and mass transport is to be investigated for the transition film region using state-of-the-art optical diagnostic techniques. By utilizing a microgravity environment, the length scales of the transition film region can be extended sufficiently, from submicron to micron, to probe and measure the microscale transport fields which are affected by intermolecular forces. Extension of the thin film dimensions under microgravity will be achieved by using a conical evaporator made of a thin silicon substrate under …

Sex And (Sexed By) The State, Taylor Flynn Jan 2004

Sex And (Sexed By) The State, Taylor Flynn

Media Presence

This Article discusses how the law not only tries to discipline the body into traditional sex roles, but it also has the power to declare you to be a particular legal sex, even over your objection. The majority of jurisdictions follow the orthodoxy of sex as "genitalia-at-birth." Under this view, a male to female transgender woman (who, for example, has undergone surgery and is anatomically indistinguishable from someone born with female genitalia) is deemed in the majority of states to be legally male. In a handful of more progressive states, the law looks predominantly--although unfortunately, not exclusively--at an individual's gender …

"Don't Ask, Don't Tell": A Qualified Defense, Eugene R. Milhizer Jan 2004

"Don't Ask, Don't Tell": A Qualified Defense, Eugene R. Milhizer

Hofstra Labor & Employment Law Journal

Upon the 10th Anniversary of the so-called “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, I was asked to reflect upon the policy by Hofstra University. This article presents my remarks at a symposium dedicagted to this topic. The article first reviews in detail the origins of the policy. It then explores the moral debate implicated by the policy, including the traditional arguments against homosexuality with special attention to the natural law, and latitudinarian arguments in favor of homosexuality or opposed to discrimination based on the basis of homosexuality. The article next surveys contemporary attitudes about homosexuality, focusing on military service by homosexuals. …

Liberty, Diversity, Academic Freedom, And Survival: Preferential Hiring Among Religiously-Affliated Institutions Of Higher Education, Jamie Darin Prenkert Jan 2004

Liberty, Diversity, Academic Freedom, And Survival: Preferential Hiring Among Religiously-Affliated Institutions Of Higher Education, Jamie Darin Prenkert

Hofstra Labor & Employment Law Journal

This article discusses the exemptions given to religious educational institutions from the usual Title VII protections afforded employees. The author supports the use of such exemptions when they promote diversity and protecting the fundamental foundation of the institution itself, but warns that there is a point where the exemptions must not be used even when they are within the power of the institution to invoke. Such inappropriate instances include promoting faculty or granting tenure to faculty members who are not of the religious persuasion of the institution, or hiring the best and brightest faculty over the professor who simply agrees …

Same-Sex Marriage: The Evolving Landscape For Employee Benefits, Neal S. Schelberg, Carri L. Mitnick

Hofstra Labor & Employment Law Journal

This article deals with the aftermath of the Goodridge decision in terms of employment benefits for partners in a same-sex marriage, particularly in the interstate context. Because marriages in one state are generally recognized in all other states, the article focuses on how employers must treat a Massachusetts same-sex marriage in light of the Defense of Marriage Act and its prohibition of same-sex marriage for the purpose of federal employment benefits.

The Continuing Relevance Of Race-Concious Remedies And Prgrams In Integrating The Nation's Workforce, Michael L. Foreman, Kristin M. Dadey, Audrey J. Wiggins Jan 2004

The Continuing Relevance Of Race-Concious Remedies And Prgrams In Integrating The Nation's Workforce, Michael L. Foreman, Kristin M. Dadey, Audrey J. Wiggins

Hofstra Labor & Employment Law Journal

The authors argue that achieving diversity should be one of the main legitimate justifications for affirmative action programs, in addition to the traditionally cited "remedy for past discrimination" justification. The authors describe the legal framework for affirmative action beginning with the Civil Rights Act of 1964. They discuss the various types of affirmative action plans - public and private, court ordered and voluntary. The article concludes with a discussion of Department of Justice and EEOC policies towards affirmative action, arguing that the federal government should be the biggest proponent of such programs.

The Non-Merger Virtual Merger: Is Corporate Law Ready For Virtual Reality?, Stuart R. Cohn Jan 2004

The Non-Merger Virtual Merger: Is Corporate Law Ready For Virtual Reality?, Stuart R. Cohn

UF Law Faculty Publications

The term virtual mergers describes the relatively recent phenomenon of companies entering into contractual arrangements that are functionally, but not legally, equivalent to mergers prescribed by corporate statutes. Virtual mergers usually involve the shared use of assets contributed by each of the companies. A central element of the transaction is that the two companies remain legally independent, each with its own directors, officers, and shareholders. The arrangements can usually be terminated by either party, allowing each company to return to the status quo ante or exercise buyout rights if contractually provided.

Although virtual mergers have occurred among public companies in …

Making Motherhood Safer In Egypt, Karima Khalil, Farzaneh Roudi-Fahimi Jan 2004

Making Motherhood Safer In Egypt, Karima Khalil, Farzaneh Roudi-Fahimi

Reproductive Health

Fewer Egyptian women die of maternal causes today than they did 10 or 15 years ago, due in large part to the national safe motherhood program. Nevertheless, maternal mortality is still relatively high, and the country faces challenges in reducing it further. Many of these challenges involve addressing the delays women face when they need essential obstetric care. In Egypt and other countries, most maternal deaths could be avoided if women had timely access to high-quality emergency obstetric services. Although Egypt’s level of maternal mortality is relatively high by international standards, recent evidence suggests that a woman’s lifetime risk of …

The Influence Of Biology And Commitment Beliefs On Jealousy Responses, Rebecca L. Ammon Jan 2004

The Influence Of Biology And Commitment Beliefs On Jealousy Responses, Rebecca L. Ammon

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Research on biological sex differences in romantic jealousy suggests that males are more upset by sexual infidelity and females are more upset by emotional infidelity. Researchers identify two types of jealousy (i.e., sexual and emotional) and two types of commitment (i.e., sexual exclusivity and relational duration). The type of jealousy experienced may be a rational or emotional response to different commitment beliefs rather than dependent on biological sex. A sample of 230 college students completed various measures of commitment and jealousy as part of an online survey. People who valued sexually exclusive relationships were more distressed by sexual infidelity. People …

Incidence Of Skin Trauma Associated With Participation In Intercollegiate Soccer, Charlotte June Bargar Jan 2004

Incidence Of Skin Trauma Associated With Participation In Intercollegiate Soccer, Charlotte June Bargar

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Participation in soccer at the intercollegiate level has increased dramatically in the United States over the past 20 years. Past studies have identified the frequency and mechanisms of musculoskeletal injury among various populations. However, data on the incidence and etiology of skin trauma associated with intercollegiate athletic participation is limited in the literature. The purpose of this study was to measure the frequency of skin trauma and determine the injury rate (IR) based on exposure to injury among male and female soccer student-athletes at a NCAA Division II institution. A case reporting and exposure form was used to collect the …

Southern Sudanese Women In The Diaspora, Stanislava Benesova Jan 2004

Southern Sudanese Women In The Diaspora, Stanislava Benesova

All Volumes (2001-2008)

This paper focuses on the ways in which southern Sudanese women in the African Diaspora are undergoing certain transformations of their gender roles as mothers, daughters, and wives. People’s identities in the diaspora can be regarded as a constant process of negotiation between the traditions of their homeland and the traditions of the host society. This paper investigates the relationship between ideologies of male domination and Sudanese women’s actual status in the family and society.
Indeed, immigrants’ identity is affected by the host society’s gender roles. This paper also provides an analysis of the role and importance of Christianity in …

The Effects Of A 10-Minute Warm-Up On Postural Control In Subjects With Functional Ankle Instability, Kristin Dawn Cadogan Jan 2004

The Effects Of A 10-Minute Warm-Up On Postural Control In Subjects With Functional Ankle Instability, Kristin Dawn Cadogan

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Very little research has assessed the effect of warm-up on postural control. The only related literature found pertained to rigorous activity and sensory processes. This type of activity increases the rate of reaction to perturbations of muscle length.14 Also, an increase in core temperature caused by activity influences the velocity of muscle shortening.15 Warming up prior to activity is a universally accepted method to prevent injuries. 16 Intense activity increases the rate of reaction to perturbations of muscle length and influences kinesthetic sensation. This raises the question if this neuromuscular effect can be replicated by measuring postural sway after a …
