Guard-Ring Electrode Effects On Crosstalk In Simulated 2d Cmos Compatible Vertical Photodiode Pixel Arrays, Paul Jansz-Dravetzky, Steven Hinckley
Guard-Ring Electrode Effects On Crosstalk In Simulated 2d Cmos Compatible Vertical Photodiode Pixel Arrays, Paul Jansz-Dravetzky, Steven Hinckley
Research outputs pre 2011
In this study, we have simulated the electrical crosstalk in back-illuminated and front-illuminated photodiode arrays as a function of substrate thickness and junction depth for single junction photodiode pixels, with and without guard-ring electrodes. The physical mechanisms responsible for electrical crosstalk suppression are explained using an absorption volume proportion concept. The results obtained show that significant crosstalk suppression can be achieved for back-illuminated thin substrate guarded-pixel arrays
How Bank Risk Profiles Affect Their Strength : An Assessment Of Banks In The Asia-Pacific Region, David E. Allen, Mahendra Chandra, Jaime Li Ping Yong
How Bank Risk Profiles Affect Their Strength : An Assessment Of Banks In The Asia-Pacific Region, David E. Allen, Mahendra Chandra, Jaime Li Ping Yong
Research outputs pre 2011
This paper analyses bank relative riskiness by testing the sensitivity of Asia-Pacific banks to overall market risk, global credit risk shocks, interest rate risk shocks and maturity risk shocks. The banks’ risk profiles are categorised according to their capitalisation levels and functional degree of diversification. Our results indicate that highly capitalised banks yield higher average stock returns whilst functionally diversified banks have less volatile returns. Generally, banks that adopt capital adequacy guidelines and hold higher capital levels have greater protection from these risks. Functionally diversified banks are also more strongly positioned against system-wide shocks to the banking sector.
Will A Rise In Consumption Tax Share Increase The Effectiveness Of Government Spending?, Y H. Cheung
Will A Rise In Consumption Tax Share Increase The Effectiveness Of Government Spending?, Y H. Cheung
Research outputs pre 2011
The Australian tax reform in July 2000 gave heavier weights to consumption tax in the tax mix at the expense of the income tax. This paper shows that the trade off among the tax-mix policy parameters depends on the structure of the economy. Given that the reform is tax-revenue neutral and no change in monetary stance, a rise in the share of consumption tax in the tax mix may increase the effectiveness of government spending in stabilising the economy if certain contain is fulfilled. A numerical example is included for illustration purpose.

School Leaver Celebrations In Western Australia: A Three-Year Intervention Study, Richard Midford, Nicole Young, Fiona Farrington, Troy Bogaards
Research outputs pre 2011
A project involving community management of school leaver celebrations in Western Australia was evaluated over three years. In the first year formative evaluation was undertaken. The findings were then used to draw up a comprehensive intervention programme designed to reduce harm for the leavers and the host community. In the second year the externally co-ordinated and well-resourced intervention was evaluated in terms of impact. In the third year the intervention was on a smaller scale and coordinated by an agency within the local community. The evaluation emphasised sustainability. A similar mixed methodology, comprising surveys of school leavers, interviews with community …
An Academic Library Partnership In The Indian Ocean Region, Julia Gross, Aminath Riyaz
An Academic Library Partnership In The Indian Ocean Region, Julia Gross, Aminath Riyaz
Research outputs pre 2011
The emergence of a global marketplace in education offers valuable partnership opportunities. Libraries in small developing countries often do not have a critical mass of library professionals to share knowledge and to provide advice and collegial support. This case study describes a World Bank funded “Link Institution Arrangement”, which established a library partnership between an academic library in Western Australia and one in the Republic of Maldives. The authors describe the state of libraries and the emerging library profession in the Maldives. They also reveal ways in which the partners explored development issues facing an isolated academic library, shared knowledge …
Women's Pacs: Their Motivations, Strategies, And Impacts., Heather Frederick
Women's Pacs: Their Motivations, Strategies, And Impacts., Heather Frederick
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The literature on political action committees focuses on the different roles and strategies of PACs depending upon their motivation. I argue that the motivations of traditional PACs are founded in an assumption of substantive representation theory. This dissertation deals with the theoretical motivations of women's PACs—that of descriptive representation. Because women's PACs have a different underlying theoretical motivation than traditional political action committees, I hypothesize that the existing PAC literature on the strategies and organizational structures of PACs is both insufficient to explain the behavior of women's PACs, as well as exclusionary. This research seeks to identify the strategies and …
The Influence Of Organizational Structure On The Degree Of Adherence To The Principles Of A Learning Oriented Student Affairs Division., Debralee Mcclellan
The Influence Of Organizational Structure On The Degree Of Adherence To The Principles Of A Learning Oriented Student Affairs Division., Debralee Mcclellan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
National calls for reform in higher education have focused on increased accountability for student learning. The historical division of responsibility and expertise between academic affairs and student affairs has resulted in an academic-social divide, contributing to an estrangement of student affairs from higher education's central mission of student learning. Recognizing this gap, the student affairs profession has articulated characteristics and principles of student affairs practice that contribute to student learning. Many community colleges have sought a solution to the academic—social divide by orchestrating an organizational restructuring which results in the consolidation of responsibility for both academic and student affairs. To …
A Conceptual Model Of Psychological Distress In Native Americans., Shari Ann Robinson
A Conceptual Model Of Psychological Distress In Native Americans., Shari Ann Robinson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The aim of the current study was to utilize a structural model to examine simultaneously the relationships among socioeconomic status (SES), anxiety sensitivity, stress, psychological problems, Native American identity, cultural related anxiety, and coping. The proposed structural equation model was tested using AMOS (Analysis of Moment Structures). The social stress literature provided a theoretical framework; it suggests that SES-linked social stressors that result in higher levels of psychological disorders adversely affect people from lower SES backgrounds. Data were gathered from 150 Native American attendees at a Pow-Wow. SES was hypothesized to impact negatively on anxiety sensitivity. Anxiety sensitivity was predicted …
Health Insurance, Labor Supply, And Job Mobility: A Critical Review Of The Literature, Jonathan Gruber, Brigitte C. Madrian
Health Insurance, Labor Supply, And Job Mobility: A Critical Review Of The Literature, Jonathan Gruber, Brigitte C. Madrian
Faculty Publications
This paper provides a critical review of the empirical literature on the relationship between health insurance, labor supply, and job mobility. We review over 50 papers on this topic, almost exclusively written in the last 10 years. We reach five conclusions. First, there is clear and unambiguous evidence that health insurance is a central determinant of retirement decisions. Second, there is fairly clear evidence that health insurance is not a major determinant of the labor supply and welfare exit decisions of low income mothers. Third, there is fairly compelling evidence that health insurance is an important factor in the labor …

Oral Health Care Practices And Perceptions Among Nursing Home Residents: A Case Study., Bridget Marne Boyce
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Currently, knowledge is limited regarding the extent to which: (1) nursing home residents perceive their oral health care as being adequate, (2) nursing home residents’ perceptions and actual oral health status are congruent, and (3) oral health care outcomes and residents’ perceptions of their own oral health care are influenced by levels of physical functioning. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the oral health practices and perceptions of oral health care among cognitively intact nursing home residents. The instruments utilized were a resident interview and an oral health care evaluation. All participants (n = 10) completed the assessments. …
Baselining A Compressed Air System: An Expert Systems Approach., Arul Prasad Senniappan
Baselining A Compressed Air System: An Expert Systems Approach., Arul Prasad Senniappan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The depletion of fossils fuels, the unstable supply of these fuels, and the phenomenal increase in energy costs emphasize the need to conserve energy. Compressed air systems are major energy consuming systems in most of industries and are known to be the most inefficient. The baselining of such systems assumes importance in energy conservation because of this. As a result, the baseline of such systems stresses the importance of energy conservation. When designing a new facility and operating an existing one, eliminating inefficiencies such as inappropriate uses, excessive system pressure, leaks and other wastages leads to energy conservation. This research …

Currently, no standard abrasive scale exists for dental prophylaxis pastes. Manufacturers determine their definition of abrasive grit levels. The purpose of this study was to measure resulting surface roughness on bovine enamel of a representative sample of prophylaxis pastes. The study consisted of a survey of prophylaxis paste manufacturers, a pilot study and an analysis of bovine tooth specimens. Prophylaxis pastes, pumice and toothpaste comprised the sample. Equipment was constructed for applying abrasives to specimens at 2500 rpm for five seconds under a load of 145-grams. Pre and post-test surface roughness readings were recorded. Repeated measures ANOVA determined that the …
Estimating The Impact Of Occupational Fatal Injuries On The United States Gross Domestic Product., Elyce Anne Biddle
Estimating The Impact Of Occupational Fatal Injuries On The United States Gross Domestic Product., Elyce Anne Biddle
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Mankind has been concerned with the safety and well-being of workers for more than 2,000 years. Despite this concern, occupational injuries have claimed the lives of nearly 60,000 American workers from 1992-2001 as reported through the Bureau of Labor Statistics Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) program. The traditional measures of the human loss used—frequency, rate, and severity—are not the only measures of the achievements of the occupational safety and health community. Nor are they the only means to direct efforts to reduce the number of occupational incidents. Economic loss is another perspective that provides a more complete and meaningful …
Exploring The Clinical Nurse Educator's Ability To Foster Student Reflection, Jessie M. Johnson
Exploring The Clinical Nurse Educator's Ability To Foster Student Reflection, Jessie M. Johnson
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The purpose of this study is to understand how Clinical Nurse Educators use reflective practices with students. While the value of reflective practice has been vigorously discussed in both nursing and educational literature, studies to support its benefits remain strangely elusive. The appeal of reflective practice has arisen out of a sustained conviction that life experience offers a legitimate and rich form of knowledge. If captured, it may narrow the gap between the non practical nature of theories and the complexities of everyday practice problems. The research question for this study is: "How do Clinical Nurse Educators foster student reflection?" …
Opto-Vlsi Based Wdm Multifunction Device, Selam T. Ahderom
Opto-Vlsi Based Wdm Multifunction Device, Selam T. Ahderom
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The tremendous expansion of telecommunication services in the past decade, in part due to the growth of the Internet, has made the development of high-bandwidth optical net-works a focus of research interest. The implementation of Dense-Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) optical fiber transmission systems has the potential to meet this demand. However, crucial components of DWDM networks – add/drop multiplexers, filters, gain equalizers as well as interconnects between optical channels – are currently not implemented as dynamically reconfigurable devices. Electronic cross-connects, the traditional solution to the reconfigurable optical networks, are increasingly not feasible due to the rapidly increasing bandwidth of the …

A Comparison Of Reading Development By Learners Of Japanese In Intensive Domestic Immersion And Study Abroad Contexts, Dan Dewey
Faculty Publications
To investigate the role of context in reading development, a comparison of reading comprehension and processes was conducted between learners of Japanese as a second language in study abroad (SA; n = 15) and intensive domestic (in the United States) immersion (IM; n = 15) contexts. A significant difference was found between contexts in pretest to posttest gains on only one measure of reading comprehension, a self-assessment. Differences on the two other measures of comprehension—free-recall and vocabulary knowledge—were not significant. The self-assessment measure indicated that SA students felt more confident reading the second language than their IM counterparts. In terms …
An Archaeology Of Pain, Dennis Michael Gruber
An Archaeology Of Pain, Dennis Michael Gruber
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)
Pain is a discursive construct of science and medicine. Through the discourses of biopower and technoscience pain is used to construct and maintain the social body. Biopower and technoscience are discursive practices that are enveloped within the disciplines of Western society. Specifically, the disciplines of education, science, and medicine use biopower and technoscience to normalize the body and construct binaries which create the abnormal. The cyborg is a discursive practice used to implode the binaries of the disciplines which maintain the social body. Through the implosion of binaries, the binary of mind/body is no longer plausible in the explanation of …
