Population Pharmacokinetics Of Cyclosporine In Heart And Lung Transplant Patients, Gautam Baheti Jan 2004

Population Pharmacokinetics Of Cyclosporine In Heart And Lung Transplant Patients, Gautam Baheti

Open Access Master's Theses

Pharmacokinetics involves the analysis of plasma concentration and time data to obtain models that summarize the absorption, distribution and elimination parameters of a drug. The population approach to pharmacokinetics involves the estimation of mean pharmacokinetic parameters and their variability within the population.

Cyclosporine is a widely used immunosuppressive agent, and its pharmacokinetic parameters are characterized by a large variation in blood concentrations after oral or intravenous administration. Cyclosporine being a narrow therapeutic index drug is associated with significant consequences if the drug is present in 'sub-therapeutic' or 'supra-therapeutic' concentration. Optimization of therapy is challenging owing to variable pharmacokinetic parameters and …

Prototypes: The Modern Retail Industry In Suburban Communities, Benjamin Paul Hartley Jan 2004

Prototypes: The Modern Retail Industry In Suburban Communities, Benjamin Paul Hartley

Open Access Master's Theses

The implementation of the "prototype", large or small, has become the de facto strategy for national and regional corporations to compete in today's retail market. The prototype, in terms of retail development, refers to the creation of a single building and site design that is to be applied, with the smallest amount of variation possible, each time a new store is constructed. Almost universally, the building is square and utilitarian, the entrance faces the street, large parking areas are located between the entrance and street and perhaps to the side, and a loading area is placed in the back. The …

Tailwater Recovery Systems For Irrigation: Benefit/Cost Analysis And Water Resource Conservation Technique In Northeast Arkansas, Jennifer L. Bouldin, Nate A. Bickford, H. B. Stroud, G. S. Guha

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Water, one of the earth's most vital resources, is particularly significant in the Arkansas Delta agricultural landscape. While both surface and groundwater are extremely important, 94% of the 26.9 billion L (7.1 billion gal) of water pumped daily from the Alluvial Aquifer is used for agricultural purposes. This common property is subsequently being depleted and sustainable conservation methods are being pursued. State and federal incentive programs encourage the use of a tailwater recovery system in agricultural irrigation. With the use of a complete recovery system, benefits include not only government incentives for wetland habitat, but reduced groundwater use and decreased …

Additions To The Aquatic Diptera (Chaoboridae, Chironomidae, Tabanidae, Tipulidae) Fauna Of The White River National Wildlife Refuge, Arkansas, Stephen W. Chordas Iii, Patrick L. Hudson, Eric G. Chapman

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The dipteran fauna of Arkansas is generally poorly known. A previous study of the Aquatic macroinvertebrates of the White River National Wildlife Refuge, the largest refuge in Arkansas, reported only 12 diptera taxa out of 219 taxa collected (Chordas et al., 1996). Most of the dipterans from this study were identified only to the family level. The family Chironomidae is a large, diverse group and was predicted to be much more diverse in the refuge than indicated by previous studies. In this study, Chironomidae were targeted, with other aquatic or semiaquatic dipterans also retained, in collections designed to better define …

Impact Of Black Shale Weathering On Sediment Quality, G. M. Ogendi, R. E. Hannigan, Jerry L. Farris, D. Smith Jan 2004

Impact Of Black Shale Weathering On Sediment Quality, G. M. Ogendi, R. E. Hannigan, Jerry L. Farris, D. Smith

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Weathering of black shales leads to elevated metal concentrations in both surface water and stream sediments. In spite of the recent focus on black shales, few data exist on the ecological impacts of this process particularly on aquatic organisms. The key objective of this study was to determine the impact of trace metal concentrations in sediments upon aquatic organisms. To achieve the above objective, stream sediment samples were collected from streams draining black shale and limestone (used as a reference stream) lithologies located in central Arkansas between June 2003 and January 2004. Trace metal concentrations were measured by the dynamic …

Human Rabies Post-Exposure Treatment In Arkansas, 1994-2000, D. Blake Sasse Jan 2004

Human Rabies Post-Exposure Treatment In Arkansas, 1994-2000, D. Blake Sasse

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The Arkansas Department of Health recorded 118 incidents where humans in Arkansas were treated following exposure to confirmed rabid animals from 1994-2000. Domestic species accounted for 64% of incidents and 76% of total human exposures with the ratio of human exposures per rabid animal 17 times higher for domestic animals than wild animals. Records of 218 cases of human exposure to potentially rabid wild animals during this period were also examined to determine method of contact. While 72% of cases involving raccoons (Procyon lotor), skunks (Mephitis mephitis and Spilogale putorius), and foxes (Urocyon cinereoargenteus and Vulpes vulpes) were initiated by …

Not Separate But Still Unequal: Disparities, Invisibility And Bias In Access And Quality Of Health Care In Michigan, Kelly Kammeraad

McNair Scholars Journal

Current research points to race and ethnicity as predictive of disparities in access and quality of health care. A 2002 Institute of Medicine Study found that African-American patients tend not to receive the same type of care as White patients, even when controlling for socioeconomic status. Self-reported perceptions of racial bias within the patient provider relationship, from the patient’s perspective, are analyzed to uncover the subtle ways perceptions of differential treatment based on racial bias work to create barriers or perpetuate disparities in health outcomes for African-American breast cancer survivors in Michigan.

Gender And Empowerment: Contemporary Lakota Women Of Rosebud, Christina G. Mello Jan 2004

Gender And Empowerment: Contemporary Lakota Women Of Rosebud, Christina G. Mello

McNair Scholars Journal

Western-European stereotypes still permeate Plains Indian culture suggesting that women were passive and subjugated while men were dominant warriors. This research challenges those stereotypes through exploration of origin and spirituality accounts, kinship organization, historical impact, contemporary and traditional issues, and through first hand ethnographic research of the Sicangu Nation of Lakota people in regards to gender roles. Using feminist critique and reflexive theoretical approaches, information was collected through participant observation and interviews with Sicangu people in 2004. By focusing on how Lakota women have empowered themselves, this research illustrates how women were and continue to be respected, influential members of …

Investigating The Relationship Between Parenting Styles And Delinquent Behavior, Danielle J. Terry Jan 2004

Investigating The Relationship Between Parenting Styles And Delinquent Behavior, Danielle J. Terry

McNair Scholars Journal

Although numerous studies have examined the connection between delinquent behavior and parenting styles in children and adolescents, limited research has been done to determine if there is an ongoing relationship between these variables in the college population. This study included 38 college students and examined the relationship between parenting styles; families studied were authoritative, authoritarian, indulgent, and uninvolved. It was predicted that authoritarian parenting practices would be highly correlated with delinquent behavior, particularly for students with a difficult temperament and low family cohesion.

Psychopaths In The Courtroom: A Preliminary Report On Judicial Sentencing For Violent Offenses, John Traxler Jan 2004

Psychopaths In The Courtroom: A Preliminary Report On Judicial Sentencing For Violent Offenses, John Traxler

McNair Scholars Journal

Every day, judges are faced with making decisions about a defendant’s potential risk as it relates to setting bail, sentencing, and a variety of other contexts. In making these decisions, judges must balance issues of fairness and protection of the individual rights of the accused with protection of society from dangerous predators who may commit future acts of physical or sexual violence. As professionals who are not specifically trained in violence assessment, judges must rely on others, including probation agents, attorneys, and expert witnesses, for information to assist in their decision-making. Through expert witnesses and up-to-date training of criminal justice …

The Death Penalty--An Obstacle To The "War Against Terrorism"?, Thomas M. Mcdonnell Jan 2004

The Death Penalty--An Obstacle To The "War Against Terrorism"?, Thomas M. Mcdonnell

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

September 11 seared our collective memory perhaps even more vividly than December 7, 1941, and has evoked a natural demand both for retribution and for measures to keep us safe. Given the existing statutory and judicial authority for capital punishment, the U.S. Government has to confront the issue whether to seek the death penalty against those who are linked to the suicide attacks or to the organization that sponsored them or both. Meting out the death penalty to international terrorists involves difficult moral, legal, and policy questions. The September 11 crimes were not only domestic crimes, but also international ones. …

Enhancing The Legitimacy Of The World Trade Organization, Andrea Greisberger Jan 2004

Enhancing The Legitimacy Of The World Trade Organization, Andrea Greisberger

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

The World Trade Organization (WTO) has faced harsh criticism from developing nations in recent years. Many developing nations feel that the promises they received when they joined the WTO have not been fulfilled. These nations feel that wealthy, industrialized nations like the United States and the members of the European Union are the only ones that have benefited from the organization. Moreover, they feel that these developed nations have benefited at their expense through the WTO's dispute settlement process. Many improvements to the WTO have been proposed. However, the one that seems the most able to help developing nations, the …

Return To Europe? The Czech Republic And The Eu's Influence On Its Treatment Of Roma, Matthew D. Marden Jan 2004

Return To Europe? The Czech Republic And The Eu's Influence On Its Treatment Of Roma, Matthew D. Marden

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

The Czech Republic has faced much criticism in the past fifteen years for the treatment of its Romani minority community. The European Union has successfully applied informal, non-legal means of pressuring the Czech Republic into making some changes necessary to improve living conditions for Roma. With the Czech Republic's recent accession to the European Union, legal human rights institutions will likely play a larger role in ensuring that the Czech Republic continues to improve conditions for Czech Roma. The Author uses a case brought by a group of Roma at the European Court of Human Rights to demonstrate the potential …

The Lives Of Animals, The Lives Of Prisoners, And The Revelations Of Abu Ghraib, Charles H. Brower, Ii Jan 2004

The Lives Of Animals, The Lives Of Prisoners, And The Revelations Of Abu Ghraib, Charles H. Brower, Ii

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

In this Article, Professor Brower suggests that the images depicting inhuman treatment of detainees at the Abu Ghraib prison contain timely lessons about the function and the importance of legal personality. To illustrate this thesis, the Author first identifies animals as a population condemned to an existence bereft of the protections that accompany legal personality. Next, the Author describes the chilling similarities between the treatment of animals and the treatment of prisoners in Iraq and in the so-called "Global War on Terror." Finally, the Author discusses three potential lessons for a nation widely perceived to have retreated from its commitment …

A series of substituted 2-phenacyl-3-phenyl-1H-pyrrole-4-carboxylates were prepared from substituted acetophenones in 6 steps. The final condensations between a chloroenal and an aminoketone were carried out under neutral conditions in parallel to yield the series listed below. Selected pyrrole derivatives proved to be potent hypolipidemic agents lowering serum triglyceride concentrations in CF-1 male mice after 14 days of I.P. administration. One agent orally lowered serum cholesterol in Sprague-Dawley male rats at 2mg/kg/day after 14 days. The agents demonstrated a lowering of mouse serum LDL- cholesterol levels and selected compounds showed an elevation of serum HDL-cholesterol levels. The cholesterol concentrations in the …
