Are We Honestly Studying Malingering?: A Profile And Comparison Of Simulated Suspected Malingerers, Adrianne M. Brennan Jan 2004

Are We Honestly Studying Malingering?: A Profile And Comparison Of Simulated Suspected Malingerers, Adrianne M. Brennan

LSU Master's Theses

Malingering research typically uses analog simulation designs or the differential prevalence design among "real" patients. Both have been criticized for methodological limitations in external and internal validity, respectively. Samples of simulated malingerers were compared to suspected malingerers to examine generalizability of analog findings. Overall results support the use of simulation designs. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that stringent selection of suspected malingerers maintains internal validity of the differential prevalence design. A second focus, to determine if demographic matching of simulated malingerers is necessary, showed that matching on age and race is not necessary.

Methods To Induce Earlier Onset Of Cyclicity In Transitional Mares, Abdulhakeem Hashim Aljarrah Jan 2004

Methods To Induce Earlier Onset Of Cyclicity In Transitional Mares, Abdulhakeem Hashim Aljarrah

LSU Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate methods to induce earlier onset of cyclicity in transitional mares. Two experiments were conducted evaluating the effect of follicular aspiration to advance the onset of cyclicity, more succinctly define criteria for selection of mares for follicular aspiration and to compare aspiration to deslorelin treatment for initiating cyclicity in transitional mares. In Experiment 1, anestrous mares were assigned to control (n=6) or follicular aspiration (n=11). The control mares were monitored twice weekly, until ovulation was detected. The aspiration mares were similarly monitored until a follicle >35 mm was identified, then transvaginal ultrasound guided …

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Environmental Science And Law Due To Emerging Micro-Scale Gas Chromatography Technology, Alfred Ruks Politzer Jan 2004

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Environmental Science And Law Due To Emerging Micro-Scale Gas Chromatography Technology, Alfred Ruks Politzer

LSU Master's Theses

The intersection of science and law is very complex. The two disciplines frequently interact due to environmental issues. Expert testimony is most often the method used to introduce scientific data into the legal system. Advances in technology have allowed scientists to increase the preciseness and reliability of data produced. The development of the gas chromatograph and the recent microFAST gas chromatograph has greatly increased the amounts of data available to the legal system. The legal system has relatively recently developed a set of guidelines with which to evaluate scientific evidence and determine whether it should be admitted into trial. Previously …

Regional-Scale Eutrophication Models: A Bayesian Treed Model Approach, Angelina Freeman Jan 2004

Regional-Scale Eutrophication Models: A Bayesian Treed Model Approach, Angelina Freeman

LSU Master's Theses

Utilizing Bayesian hierarchical techniques, regional-scale eutrophication models were developed for use in the Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) process. The Bayesian tree-based (BTREED) approach allows association of multiple environmental stressors with biological responses, and quantification of uncertainty sources in the water quality model. Simple parametric models are often inadequate for describing complex datasets; the BTREED approach partitions the dataset, and describes the localized subsets of data with linear models, thereby providing a comprehensive representation of stressor and response interactions. Nutrient criteria data for lakes, ponds and reservoirs across the United States were obtained from the Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) …

A Settlement Of Great Consequence: The Development Of The Natchez District, 1763-1860, Lee Davis Smith Jan 2004

A Settlement Of Great Consequence: The Development Of The Natchez District, 1763-1860, Lee Davis Smith

LSU Master's Theses

This study examines events, conditions, and circumstances that influenced the development of the Natchez District of West Florida from its acquisition by Great Britain in 1763 until the eve of the Civil War. The strong relationships between West Florida and the “original thirteen” colonies created a dynamic area of Revolutionary and antebellum era growth in West Florida, and particularly in the Natchez District. Eighteenth century westward migration of seaboard colonists exerted pressure on native Americans. At the same time, colonists felt pressure from the presence of British troops remaining in America following the French and Indian War. Colonial officials recognized …

Consumer Sensory Characteristics Of Butter Cake Made From Wheat And Rice Flours, Ashley Elizabeth Bond Jan 2004

Consumer Sensory Characteristics Of Butter Cake Made From Wheat And Rice Flours, Ashley Elizabeth Bond

LSU Master's Theses

Rice is an important commodity in Louisiana and throughout the world. During the milling process, about 15% of rice kernels become broken. Louisiana produced approximately 2,011,000 hundred weights of broken rice kernels in 2002. Converting broken rice into rice-based products adds dollars back to broken rice. The market potential for rice in processed foods is huge. In the refrigerated and frozen baked foods category, it is approximately $14.3 billion; while in the baked snack foods and wholesale bakery foods category, it is approximately $31.4 billion. Approximately 1-2% of the United States population suffers from Celiac Spruce Disease, which is a …

These isolates were purified using serial dilution in sterile water and replating on S-PG medium. A total of 420 single isolates were obtained. These isolates were subjected to pathogenicity tests on rice (Oryza sative L. cv. Cypress). Based on these tests, 339 isolates were used in BiologTM tests and identified to the species level. Bacterial strains from 39 species in 16 genera were identified, including 52 isolates representing15 Pseudomonas species and 261 isolates representing six Burkholderia species. The remaining …

Estimating Impervious Surfaces From A Small Urban Watershed In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Using Landsat Thematic Mapper Imagery, Kurt Johnson Jan 2004

Estimating Impervious Surfaces From A Small Urban Watershed In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Using Landsat Thematic Mapper Imagery, Kurt Johnson

LSU Master's Theses

Many urban areas are using estimations of impervious surfaces as a means for better environmental management. This is because research over the last two decades indicate a consistent, inverse relationship between the percentage of impervious surfaces in a watershed and the environmental problems urban areas are experiencing. Although various methods for estimating impervious surfaces can be identified, few result in accurate and defensible estimations by which environmental problems can be assessed. This is especially important to rapidly expanding urban areas such as Baton Rouge, Louisiana where detailed records and planimetric data are lacking. Numerous studies have shown a potential for …

Bacterial Plume Dynamics In The Marshland Upwelling System Employed In The Near Freshwater Conditions, Benjamin Kojo Addo Jan 2004

Bacterial Plume Dynamics In The Marshland Upwelling System Employed In The Near Freshwater Conditions, Benjamin Kojo Addo

LSU Master's Theses

The marshland upwelling system (MUS) was installed in a floatation marsh along the banks of the Bayou Segnette Waterway, Louisiana. This site was characterized by native groundwater of low salinity regime. Previous studies focused on the removal of fecal pathogens from settled/raw and secondarily treated wastewater under high saline groundwater conditions. The objectives of this research were to: 1) quantify the impact of natural die-off on bacterial removal within the MUS, 2) determine bacterial retardation rates in laboratory-repacked sandy loam soil columns, and 3) evaluate the effectiveness of the MUS in removing fecal pathogens from settled, raw wastewater. Varying salinities …

Removal Of Toxic Organics In Wetlands: A Mechanistic Model, Luz Edith Florez Jan 2004

Removal Of Toxic Organics In Wetlands: A Mechanistic Model, Luz Edith Florez

LSU Master's Theses

The ability of removing toxic organic compounds in natural systems is important due to the capacity of these toxicants to increase risk of diseases when they are ingested by humans. This study developed a mechanistic model to estimate the removal efficiency of toxic organics in wetlands using the tanks-in-series model. Sensitivity analyses were performed for different values of the hydraulic loading rate and two kinds of wetlands: bottomland hardwood forest and freshwater marsh. It was observed the effect in the removal efficiency by the number of cell in series was principally perceived for values of N between 1 and 4; …

A Spatial Analysis Of The Smallpox Epidemic In Sheffield, United Kingdom, 1887-1888, Ann-Marie Cain Jan 2004

A Spatial Analysis Of The Smallpox Epidemic In Sheffield, United Kingdom, 1887-1888, Ann-Marie Cain

LSU Master's Theses

One of today's most fecund fields of research in medical geography involves using historical datasets from past epidemics and contemporary cadastre maps to plot the course of the contagion. The purpose is to study the spatial patterns of diseases that are rare or extinct today but still have large research value. The best example of this problem is smallpox. This project involves taking one of the most complete records of a smallpox epidemic, plotting the cases in a geographic information system (GIS), and exploring the spatial patterns using statistical software. As one of the most contagious and damaging diseases to …

Iddq Testing Of A Cmos First Order Sigma-Delta Modulator Of An 8-Bit Oversampling Adc, Anand K. Chamakura Jan 2004

Iddq Testing Of A Cmos First Order Sigma-Delta Modulator Of An 8-Bit Oversampling Adc, Anand K. Chamakura

LSU Master's Theses

This work presents IDDQ testing of a CMOS first order sigma-delta modulator of an 8-bit oversampling analog-to-digital converter using a built-in current sensor [BICS]. Gate-drain, source-drain, gate-source and gate-substrate bridging faults are injected using fault injection transistors. All the four faults cause varying fault currents and are successfully detected by the BICS at a good operation speed. The BICS have a negligible impact on the performance of the modulator and an external pin is provided to completely cut-off the BICS from the modulator. The modulator was designed and fabricated in 1.5 μm n-well CMOS process. The decimator was designed on …

Effects Of Automobile Seating Posture On Trunk Muscle Activity, Milton Maada-Gormoh Saidu Jan 2004

Effects Of Automobile Seating Posture On Trunk Muscle Activity, Milton Maada-Gormoh Saidu

LSU Master's Theses

Reports for adult population indicate that almost 80% of the adult population has reported some form of lower back aches. Each year American workers suffer more than 300,000 lost-time injuries involving musculoskeletal disorders of the back, with the costs that run into billions of dollars. Sedentary tasks are known to be major contributing factors of back pain. Prior studies have indicated that the myoelectric activity of the lumbar region decreases when the back rest inclination of a seat increased. An increase in seat pan inclination so that it increases pressure on the leg muscles is also a cause for back …

A Stage Targeted Physical Activity Intervention Among A Predominantly African American Low Income Medical Population, Dorothy Whitehead Jan 2004

A Stage Targeted Physical Activity Intervention Among A Predominantly African American Low Income Medical Population, Dorothy Whitehead

LSU Master's Theses

Despite the numerous health benefits, there is a high prevalence of physical inactivity and associated chronic diseases in the U.S., particularly among low income African Americans. Past studies indicate that mailed, stage-matched physical activity promotion materials are effective, low cost, and show potential for reaching hard to reach groups. However, this has not been examined in a low-income African American population. The current study utilized a low-cost, mailed intervention to promote physical activity among a low income African American primary care population (N=207). The sample was predominantly female (82.6%), African American (69.1%), and overweight (81.3%). At baseline, all participants completed …

Brachial Artery Dimensions, Flow-Mediated Reactivity And Physical Function In Older Adults, Christina M. King

LSU Master's Theses

Human aging is associated with deterioration in physical functional ability. The causes are complex and multifactorial, but are presumed to include the presence and extent of cardiovascular disease. Purpose: To examine the associations between brachial artery (BA) dimensions, flow-mediated dilation (BAFMD) and physical function in 28 older adults (age: 84.6±10.9, range 66 to 98 yrs). Methods: High-resolution ultrasonography was used to measure BA diameters at rest and following 5min of forearm occlusion. Physical function was assessed using the Continuous Scale-Physical Function Performance (CS-PFP) test. Results: Pearson correlation revealed that BAFMD (r =-.39), and all physical function parameters of the CS-PFP …

Design Exploration: Totem As Alternative For Efficient And Socially Responsive Burial, Mark Evan Bazzell Jan 2004

Design Exploration: Totem As Alternative For Efficient And Socially Responsive Burial, Mark Evan Bazzell

LSU Master's Theses

American cities are facing unprecedented development pressures. Urban populations in particular are increasing and diversifying, land as a resource is becoming more valuable, and designers/developers are challenged to creatively maximize space for all land uses. As urban populations grow, space for burial of the dead may become limited thereby prompting communities to consider alternatives to traditional burial. The increase in numbers of cremation already points to this trend. In addition to the spatial limitation issues there also exist issues of social and cultural limitation. Ethnic diversity is rapidly increasing and within each group one finds different traditions and needs regarding …

The Fate Of Bifenthrin And Fipronil In Pine Bark Nursery Media, Russell Stanley Harris, Iii Jan 2004

The Fate Of Bifenthrin And Fipronil In Pine Bark Nursery Media, Russell Stanley Harris, Iii

LSU Master's Theses

Concerns over the adverse effects of pesticides on human health and the environment have led to the development of stricter pesticide regulations and the outright banning of many pesticides in the U.S. Bifenthrin and fipronil are important pesticides used in the nursery industry for the control of imported fire ants (Solenopsis invicta Buren, S. richteri Forel, and their hybrids) to meet the requirements of the Imported Fire Ant Quarantine. Nurseries typically use highly-organic media ("soilless" media) and little is known about the fate of these pesticides when used with these media. Our research measured the influence of irrigation frequency and …

Dietary Supplements And Sports Performance: Introduction And Vitamins, Melvin H. Williams Jan 2004

Dietary Supplements And Sports Performance: Introduction And Vitamins, Melvin H. Williams

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Publications

Sports success is dependent primarily on genetic endowment in athletes with morphologic, psychologic, physiologic and metabolic traits specific to performance characteristics vital to their sport. Such genetically-endowed athletes must also receive optimal training to increase physical power, enhance mental strength, and provide a mechanical advantage. However, athletes often attempt to go beyond training and use substances and techniques, often referred to as ergogenics, in attempts to gain a competitive advantage. Pharmacological agents, such as anabolic steroids and amphetamines, have been used in the past, but such practices by athletes have led to the establishment of anti-doping legislation and effective testing …

(First paragraph) Flexibility is often downplayed as unimportant to fitness. However, flexibility training is imperative to maintain full range of motion (ROM) of joints, particularly in individuals with type 2 diabetes, who may experience limited joint mobility due to glycation of joint structures (1). Maladies such as “frozen shoulder” are common complaints in type 2 diabetes (2).

Regulatory Takings Challenges To Historic Preservation Laws After Penn Central, J. Peter Byrne Jan 2004

Regulatory Takings Challenges To Historic Preservation Laws After Penn Central, J. Peter Byrne

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The Penn Central decision, in its most immediate concern, provided a legal framework within which local governments could enforce historic landmark restrictions without a regular constitutional requirement to pay "just compensation." The decision amalgamated regulatory takings analysis of historic landmark restrictions to the familiar and tolerant federal standards for reviewing zoning. Affirming the importance of the public interest goals of historic preservation, the Court directed inquiry to whether sufficient economic potential remained in the control of the property owner, given reasonable expectations at the time of her investment in the property. While the broader jurisprudential merits of Penn Central's approach …

Constitutional Dialogue And Human Dignity: States And Transnational Constitutional Discourse, Vicki C. Jackson Jan 2004

Constitutional Dialogue And Human Dignity: States And Transnational Constitutional Discourse, Vicki C. Jackson

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The U.S. Supreme Court has been slower than some other national courts to become familiar with and discuss, distinguish, or borrow from related constitutional approaches of other nations and systems. The growth in transnational judicial discourse, especially on constitutional issues relating to human rights, has been remarked by many. National courts in Argentina, Botswana, Canada, Germany, India, South Africa, and elsewhere not infrequently refer to the constitutional jurisprudence of other nations in resolving domestic constitutional questions. Although such references are not unheard of in the United States, transnational discourse involving national courts, supranational and international tribunals is still subject to …

Living With Lawrence, Nan D. Hunter Jan 2004

Living With Lawrence, Nan D. Hunter

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This Article will proceed in three steps. First, I will examine the Court's treatment of liberty. I see Lawrence as marking the emergence of a new approach to substantive due process analysis, one that has been simmering in the concurring opinions of Justices Souter, Stevens, and Kennedy for the last decade. These three Justices apparently now have a majority for extending meaningful constitutional protection to liberty interests without denominating them as fundamental rights. They also appear to be jettisoning, at least prospectively, a special category for privacy rights. Second, I will turn my attention to the ramifications of Lawrence's equality …
