Developmental Disruption Of Thyroid Hormone: Correlations With Hearing Dysfunction In Rats, K. M. Crofton Jan 2004

Developmental Disruption Of Thyroid Hormone: Correlations With Hearing Dysfunction In Rats, K. M. Crofton

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

A wide variety of environmental contaminants adversely affect thyroid hormone (TH) homeostasis. Hypothyroidism and/or hypothyroxinemia during the early postnatal period in the rat leads to permanent structural damage and loss of function in the cochlea. A major uncertainty in assessing the risks of developmental exposure to thyroid-disrupting chemicals (TDCs) is the lack of a clear characterization of the dose-response relationship, especially in the lower region, between disruption of hormones and adverse consequences. The current work correlated early postnatal hypothyroxinemia with hearing loss in the adult rat. Linear regression was performed on the log transform for total serum thyroxine (T4) concentrations …

The Effects Of Habitat Resolution On Models Of Avian Diversity And Distributions: A Comparison Of Two Land-Cover Classifications, Joshua Lawler, Raymond O'Connor, Carolyn Hunsaker, K. Bruce Jones, Thomas Loveland, Denis White Jan 2004

The Effects Of Habitat Resolution On Models Of Avian Diversity And Distributions: A Comparison Of Two Land-Cover Classifications, Joshua Lawler, Raymond O'Connor, Carolyn Hunsaker, K. Bruce Jones, Thomas Loveland, Denis White

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Quantifying patterns is a key element of landscape analysis. One aspect of this quantification of particular importance to landscape ecologists is the classification of continuous variables to produce categorical variables such as land-cover type or elevation stratum. Although landscape ecologists are fully aware of the importance of spatial resolution in ecological investigations, the potential importance of the resolution of classifications has received little attention. Here we demonstrate the effects of using two different land-cover classifications to predict avian species richness and the occurrences of six individual species across the conterminous United States. We compared models built with a data set …

Stealth Indoctrination: Forced Speech In The Classroom, Martin Guggenheim Jan 2004

Stealth Indoctrination: Forced Speech In The Classroom, Martin Guggenheim

Faculty Articles

In the 2003 Term, the Supreme Court of the United States agreed to consider whether the Constitution permits the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance in the public schools. One would have thought this question was resolved long ago. Twice before, in 1940 and then in 1943, the Court took up related questions. This Article takes the renewed interest in the constitutionality of the Pledge as an opportunity to reexamine the role of public schools in instilling civic values and principles in children. Part I discusses the Supreme Court's prior jurisprudence with respect to the Pledge, and Part II reviews …

Accrual Accounting And The Fiscal Gap, Daniel N. Shaviro Jan 2004

Accrual Accounting And The Fiscal Gap, Daniel N. Shaviro

Faculty Articles

As Professor Jackson's article helps to show, two important points about the federal budget have won increasingly wide recognition in recent years. The first is that traditional cash-flow measures cannot provide meaningful budgetary information when the government has taken on huge long-term commitments, such as those under Social Security and Medicare, rather than simply spending discretionary annual appropriations on soldiers and roads. The second is that the current set of policies is unsustainable because the financing behind these policies falls short of the benefits due. The basic problem is that, under current policy, Social Security and Medicare spending, but not …

Navigating The Hidden Obstacles To Ex-Offender Reentry, Anthony C. Thompson Jan 2004

Navigating The Hidden Obstacles To Ex-Offender Reentry, Anthony C. Thompson

Faculty Articles

As federal and state correctional institutions steadily release record numbers of ex-offenders each year, the communities into which prisoners are released are unprepared to sustain the economic and social burden of the massive reentry movement. As a result, reentering ex-offenders lack the support needed to reintegrate themselves into society and to lead productive, law-abiding lives. This Article first explores political trends that account for the increase in incarceration rates over the last two decades and the resulting social, legal, and economic challenges of reentry both ex-offenders and their communities face. Only recently has the government begun to respond to these …

The Constitutional Protection Of Trade Secrets Under The Takings Clause, Richard A. Epstein Jan 2004

The Constitutional Protection Of Trade Secrets Under The Takings Clause, Richard A. Epstein

Faculty Articles

Unlike patents and copyrights, trade secrets are protected primarily by state law rules, with some limited federal protection thrown into the mix. One gap in the system leads to a loss of protection for everyone, so that the gains from a uniform and consistent set of rules for trade secrets are enormous. Even so, those gains can be realized only through consistent interpretation and enforcement of these rules. For the most part, this congruence has taken place on the subconstitutional level, but the constitutional dimensions of trade secret law, especially in relation to the Takings Clause, do matter when trade …

Where To Draw The Line?: Judicial Review Of Political Gerrymanders, Samuel Issacharoff, Pamela S. Karlan Jan 2004

Where To Draw The Line?: Judicial Review Of Political Gerrymanders, Samuel Issacharoff, Pamela S. Karlan

Faculty Articles

A striking feature of the post-2000 redistricting is not only the continued - indeed, ever-increasing - vigor of partisan line drawing, but the array of doctrinal tools litigators and courts have invoked in attempts to rein it in: Article I; the First Amendment; the equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment in a wide range of flavors; the Voting Rights Act of 1965; and a variety of state-law principles. We offer a preliminary reaction to the Court's decisions in Vieth v. Jubelirer, 124 S.Ct. 1769 (2004), and Cox v. Larios, 124 S.Ct. 2806 (2004), that places those decisions in the …

Trips And The Dynamics Of International Property Lawmaking, Graeme B. Dinwoodie, Rochelle C. Dreyfuss Jan 2004

Trips And The Dynamics Of International Property Lawmaking, Graeme B. Dinwoodie, Rochelle C. Dreyfuss

Faculty Articles

In prior work, we took up the question of the TRIPs Agreement's resilience to changes in domestic law. We argued that such resilience is necessary because information production is a dynamic enterprise. As new industries emerge and mature, nations must have the flexibility to modify their intellectual property rules to readjust the balance between public and private rights. In the course of that study, we examined approaches to TRIPs dispute resolution that could cabin the choices of legislation available to deal with emergent substantive problems, and which could distort the legal environment in which creative enterprises are conducted. In this …
