Alcohol Advertising And Adolescent Alcohol Consumption In The Unitedstates, Iftekhar Ahmed '04 Jan 2004

Alcohol Advertising And Adolescent Alcohol Consumption In The Unitedstates, Iftekhar Ahmed '04

The Park Place Economist

Although several other factors such as alcohol price, income, age, and race exist that possibly affect alcohol consumption, the correlation between advertising spending by the alcohol industry and subsequent adolescent alcohol consumption is not as crystal clear. Consequently, this issue generates much debate, especially in recent times.

Wage Differentials For Immigrant Women In The United States: The Heightened Effect Of Ethnic And Gender Interaction, Mahi Garg '05 Jan 2004

Wage Differentials For Immigrant Women In The United States: The Heightened Effect Of Ethnic And Gender Interaction, Mahi Garg '05

The Park Place Economist

Literature states that “the United States is one of only a handful of nations in which immigrant women outnumber immigrant men.” Yet, there has been little systematic research on the work experiences of these women. This paper aims to expand the previous literature by providing some insight into the formerly neglected dimension of female immigrant performance, as it relates to wage differentials based on sex and nationality.

Factors Affecting Environmental Concern In Bloomington-Normal Residents, Divya Soni '04, Katie Wehr '04

The Park Place Economist

This study focuses on what actions residents of Bloomington and Normal Illinois are taking to lessen their impact on the environment. These actions demonstrate their concern for the environment. Finding out what influences environmentally friendly actions is a difficult process because of the complexity and the number of factors that contribute to these decisions. Not only are the factors numerous, but they also vary in intensity. This study uncovers a few of the contributing factors to environmental concern of Bloomington-Normal residents.

Integrating Adolescent Livelihood Activities Within A Reproductive Health Programme For Urban Slum Dwellers In India, Mary Philip Sebastian, Monica J. Grant, Barbara Mensch Jan 2004

Integrating Adolescent Livelihood Activities Within A Reproductive Health Programme For Urban Slum Dwellers In India, Mary Philip Sebastian, Monica J. Grant, Barbara Mensch

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This project, whose collaborators included CARE, the Centre for Operations Research and Training, and the Population Council, tested the impact of economic skills training among girls in a slum in Allahabad, India. Recognizing the relative disadvantage of adolescent girls, the study aimed to build an evidence base for adolescent livelihoods programs. Participating girls and their parents welcomed the program, and the baseline survey clearly indicated the appropriateness of an intervention that addresses the capabilities and opportunities available to adolescent girls—including both vocational training and savings schemes. However, few girls turned their new skills into economic gain, in part because of …

Offering A Frame To Put Experience In: Margaret Wise Brown Presents Ideas As Opportunities To Very Young Children, Peter Shea Jan 2004

Offering A Frame To Put Experience In: Margaret Wise Brown Presents Ideas As Opportunities To Very Young Children, Peter Shea

Collected Papers of Peter Shea

In this essay I discuss Margaret Wise Brown’s picture books as tools for provoking philosophic reflection in young children and as meditations on the situation of the very young child and on the reflective work of the young child at a time when language is still new and fresh. Some of her work concerns the most fundamental negotiation in personal philosophy—the negotiation of an attitude to the outside world, to those realities beyond one's control, beyond one's zone of comfort.

Involving Men In Maternity Care In India, Leila Caleb-Varkey, Anurag Mishra, Anjana Das, Emma Ottolenghi, Dale Huntington, Susan E. Adamchak, M.E. Khan, Rick Homan

Reproductive Health

The Men in Maternity study investigated the feasibility, acceptability, and cost of a new, more comprehensive model of maternity care that encouraged husbands’ participation in their wives’ antenatal and postpartum care. The study was conducted in India, in collaboration with the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), Delhi Directorate at their primary health facilities called dispensaries. The study found that men accompanied their wives to the clinics and participated actively in the intervention. There were significant changes in family planning knowledge and behaviors of both men and women; although there was little acknowledgement of STI risk, knowledge and use of dual …

Opiniones Y Respuestas: Resultados De Una Encuesta De Opinión A Médicos Mexicanos Sobre El Aborto, Diana K. Lara, Lisa Goldman, Michelle Firestone Jan 2004

Opiniones Y Respuestas: Resultados De Una Encuesta De Opinión A Médicos Mexicanos Sobre El Aborto, Diana K. Lara, Lisa Goldman, Michelle Firestone

Reproductive Health

Intellectual Humility And The Art Of Disagreement At The Christian College, James S. Spiegel Jan 2004

Intellectual Humility And The Art Of Disagreement At The Christian College, James S. Spiegel

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

Education at a Christian college properly features both honest inquiry and unwavering allegiance to core theological standards, such as those embodied in the classical creeds. This combination of commitments can create tension for the Christian educator, as insistence upon doctrinal allegiance can inadvertently reinforce dogmatic attitudes so common among late adolescents. In this paper I discuss the virtue of intellectual humility and its importance for combating student dogmatism in an atmosphere of steadfast Christian commitment. After distinguishing between theological essentials and disputable matters, I discuss philosophical and theological grounds for being intellectually humble. And I illustrate ways in which faculty …
