Manganese Toxicokinetics At The Blood-Brain Barrier, Robert A. Yokel, Janelle S. Crossgrove Jan 2004

Manganese Toxicokinetics At The Blood-Brain Barrier, Robert A. Yokel, Janelle S. Crossgrove

Pharmaceutical Sciences Reports

Increased manganese (Mn) use in manufacturing and in gasoline has raised concern about Mn-induced parkinsonism. Previous research indicated carrier-mediated brain entry but did not assess brain efflux.

Using in situ rat brain perfusion, we studied influx across the blood-brain barrier (BBB) of three predominant plasma Mn species available to enter the brain: Mn2+, Mn citrate, and Mn transferrin. Our results suggested transporter-mediated uptake of these species. The uptake rate was greatest for Mn citrate. Our results using the brain efflux index method suggested that diffusion mediates distribution from rat brain to blood.

To characterize the carriers mediating brain …

A Prisoner's Right To Religious Diet Beyond The Free Exercise Clause, 51 Ucla L. Rev. 1151 (2004), Benjamin Liu

UIC Law Open Access Faculty Scholarship

Are religious prisoners entitled to dietary accommodations consistent with their religious beliefs? The current answer for this question derives from two 1987 cases, Turner v. Safley and O'Lone v. Estate of Shabazz, in which the U.S. Supreme Court articulated a factor-driven balancing test. Under this test, a prison regulation may burden an inmate's rights only if, on balance, the regulation reasonably serves a penological interest. However, the application of the Turner test often leads to conflicting results in the lower courts. The conflicting legal decisions stem from ambiguities in the concept of "reasonableness." In this Comment, I argue that the …

In Harm’S Way: The Limits To Legislating Criminal Law, Roslyn J. Levine Q.C. Jan 2004

In Harm’S Way: The Limits To Legislating Criminal Law, Roslyn J. Levine Q.C.

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

The “marijuana cases” (R. v. Malmo-Levine; R. v. Caine) and the “spanking case” (Canadian Foundation for Children Youth and the Law v. Canada) provide contrasting circumstances for the application of J.S. Mill’s “harm principle” to the courts’ consideration of the liberty interests in section 7 of the Charter. The history of the harm principle demonstrates that it is not well suited to a diverse modern society concerned with the broad aspects of public good, social well-being and the balance of competing harms, reflected in underlying Charter values. To this point, the Supreme Court has relied, increasingly, on the harm principle …

At The Cutting Edge Of Labor Law Preemption: A Critique Of Chamber Of Commerce V. Lockyer, Stephen F. Befort, Bryan N. Smith

Articles

This article analyzes the contours of federal labor law preemption through the lens of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals recent decision in Chamber of Commerce v. Lockyer, 364 F.3d 1154 (9th Cir. 2004). This case involves a constitutional challenge brought by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and several other organizations to California Assembly Bill 1889 (AB 1889), enacted by the California legislature effective in 2001. This statute prohibits certain public employers, state grant recipients, and state contractors from using state-provided funds or property to assist, promote, or deter union organizing efforts. The Ninth Circuit, in a decision issued in …

The Labor And Employment Law Decisions Of The Supreme Court's 2003-04 Term, Stephen F. Befort

Articles

It is longstanding tradition for the Secretary of the ABA's Labor and Employment Law Section to prepare a summary of the labor and employment decisions issued during each Supreme Court term. This article summarizes seven labor and employment decisions issued by the Court during its 2003-04 term as well as two other decisions that, while not arising under a labor or employment statute, have potential implications for labor and employment law. The article also analyzes each of the decisions for their overall impact and significance within the field of labor and employment law. The article goes on to discuss how …

A Comparison Of Lexical Interventions On Early Grammatical Development : Does An Emphasis On Verbs Matter?, Jamie M. Murphy Jan 2004

A Comparison Of Lexical Interventions On Early Grammatical Development : Does An Emphasis On Verbs Matter?, Jamie M. Murphy

Honors Capstones

According to the current definition of Specific Language Impairment (SLI), the transition to word combinations can be a troublesome period for children with this impairment. The purpose of this study is to reveal if an emphasis on verbs during intervention really makes a difference in children's progress in language intervention. By examining two types of intervention - one a traditional lexicon therapy without an explicit focus on verbs, the other an intervention that included an explicit focus on facilitating the verb lexicon - this study highlights how intervention with verbs may foster a child's ability to produce word combinations. Two …

Developing Integrated Object-Oriented Conception Of Geomarketing As A Tool For Promotion Of Regional Sustainable Development: The Case Study Of Ukraine, Volodymyr M. Anderson Jan 2004

Developing Integrated Object-Oriented Conception Of Geomarketing As A Tool For Promotion Of Regional Sustainable Development: The Case Study Of Ukraine, Volodymyr M. Anderson

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

In the paper we propose and discuss new vision of geomarketing as a tool for promotion of regional sustainable development. Integrated object-oriented conception of geomarketing was designed by adoption and elaboration of some new ideas and approaches, such as “place marketing”, “non-profit marketing”, “counter-marketing”, “collaborative spatial decision-making”, “endogenous regional development”, “regional sustainable development”, “public-private partnership”. We explore how geomarketing in such a comprehension may be implemented in business and public administration, regional development policy making on example of some Ukrainian firms, regional governments, and communities. The proposed geomarketing conception is based on integration of three different interpretations of geomarketing: 1) …

Alcohol Increases Microglial Expression Of Chemokine Mip-1 And Mcp-1 Mrna, Catherine L. Kossover, Cynthia J.M. Kane Jan 2004

Alcohol Increases Microglial Expression Of Chemokine Mip-1 And Mcp-1 Mrna, Catherine L. Kossover, Cynthia J.M. Kane

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Fetal exposure to alcohol can lead to extensive pathology in the CNS causing fetal alcohol syndrome or alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder. Our previous research has revealed that alcohol has detrimental effects on development of neurons and glial cells, including microglia. However, the effects of alcohol on microglial function as well as interactions between microglia and neurons remain relatively unexplored. Microglia produce immunomodulatory cytokines and chemokines that directly control the survival, development, and function of neurons and glia. In this study, mouse N9 microglial cells were treated with 0.5% (w/v) ethanol for 12-48 hr with or without subsequent challenge with the cellular …
