Ultrastructure And Function Of Respiratory Cilia In Critical Illness, Joanne Hosking Jan 2004

Ultrastructure And Function Of Respiratory Cilia In Critical Illness, Joanne Hosking

School of Biomedical Sciences Theses

Approximately one in eleven hospital patients suffer a nosocomial infection. Intensive care patients are at particular risk and nosocomial pneumonia especially is a problem in the intensive care unit (ICU). The mucociliary transport system is the major defence mechanism against such infection and whilst its efficiency has been shown to be decreased in ICU patients there are few reports in the literature describing the ultrastructure of the respiratory epithelium in this patient group. The principal aims of this study included an investigation of the ultrastructure of the respiratory ciliated epithelium in ICU patients, together with an assessment of the impact …

Playing Well With Others: Academic Development As A Team Sport, Nancy Van Note Chism Jan 2004

Playing Well With Others: Academic Development As A Team Sport, Nancy Van Note Chism

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

An important first step to attacking significant institutional problems is working across the organizational silos that encompass campus units. This chapter draws upon an experience in collaboration through which an academic development center chose to partner with a variety of campus units to address a vexing problem facing many campuses: unacceptable rates of first-year student retention. The chapter then goes beyond the case to identify the kinds of collaborations that can be created to treat other pressing academic issues and highlight characteristics of successful collaborations that academic development centers can initiate or join.

Is The Thrill Gone? An Investigation Of Faculty Vitality Within The Context Of The Community College, Cathie J. Peterson

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

This single institutional case study investigated faculty vitality within the context of the community college by answering the following research questions: What are the characteristics of vital faculty within the community college? What effect does the environment have on faculty vitality? What do the vital faculty do to maintain their vitality? Qualitative research methods were employed to study the lives of the faculty within their naturalistic setting, thereby giving voice to the vital community college faculty.

An Analysis Of The Anerr Coastal Resources Management Training Market, Claudette Robey, Kevin O'Brien, Daniel Baracskay, Michael Mcgoun, Michael J. Tevesz

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

The market analysis for the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve revealed that there is a diverse body of coastal resources management training providers who offer training in the Florida Panhandle. These organizations are primarily either governmental agencies, or institutions of higher education. Most of them offer this training to various audiences as part of their missions, although a select few offer it as the sole purpose of their organizations.

Valuing Life: A Plea For Disaggregation, Cass R. Sunstein Jan 2004

Valuing Life: A Plea For Disaggregation, Cass R. Sunstein

Articles

Each government agency uses a uniform figure to measure the value of a statistical life (VSL). This is a serious mistake. The very theory that underlies current practice calls for far more individuation of the relevant values. According to that theory, VSL should vary across risks. More controversially, VSL should vary across individuals-even or especially if the result would be to produce a lower number for some people than for others. One practical implication is that a higher value should be given to programs that reduce cancer risks. Another is that government should use a higher VSL for programs that …

Lives, Life-Years, And Willingness To Pay, Cass R. Sunstein Jan 2004

Lives, Life-Years, And Willingness To Pay, Cass R. Sunstein

Articles

In protecting safety, health, and the environment, government has increasingly relied on cost-benefit analysis. In undertaking cost-benefit analysis, the government has monetized risks of death through the idea of the value of a statistical life (VSL), currently assessed at about $6.1 million. But the government should rely instead on the value of a statistical life-year (VSLY), in a way that would likely result in lower benefits calculations for elderly people, and higher benefits calculations for children. The hard question involves not whether to undertake this shift, but how to monetize life-years, and here willingness to pay (WTP) is generally the …

The Right To Marry, Cass R. Sunstein Jan 2004

The Right To Marry, Cass R. Sunstein

Articles

The Supreme Court has said that there is a constitutional "right to marry"; but what can this possibly mean? People do not have a right to marry their dog, their aunt, June 29, a rose petal, or a sunny day. This essay attempts to make some progress in understanding both the content and the scope of the right to marry. With respect to content, it concludes that people have no more and no less than this: a right of access to whatever expressive and material benefits the state now provides for the institution of marriage. It follows that the right …

Controlling Wound Healing Through Debridement, M. A. Jones, Baojun Song, D. M. Thomas Jan 2004

Controlling Wound Healing Through Debridement, M. A. Jones, Baojun Song, D. M. Thomas

Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The formation of slough (dead tissue) on a wound is widely accepted as an inhibitor to natural wound healing. In this article, a system of differential equations that models slough/wound interaction is developed. We prove a threshold theorem that provides conditions on the amount of slough to guarantee wound healing. As a state-dependent time scale, debridement (the periodic removal of slough) is used as a control. We show that closure of the wound can be reached in infinite time by debriding.

Moral Judgment Of Law Students Across Three Years: Influences Of Gender, Political Ideology And Interest In Altruistic Law Practice, Maury Landsman, Steven P. Mcneel

Articles

Jokes and negative stereotypes about lawyers abound, suggesting low levels of honesty and morality. One commentator has suggested a reason for this: The joke rings true to a lot of people because of what many lawyers in this country - including many at the top of the profession - do for their clients: bend, distort, conceal, cover up, obfuscate, or misrepresent the facts, in ways that are simultaneously (1) regarded by ordinary people as just plain dishonest, and (2) defended by many lawyers and legal experts as embodying the finest traditions of the bar and of legal ethics in our …
