Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 9th Annual Conference (2004)

This presentation will examine the issue of racial prejudice both within and beyond the schools from a psychological perspective. It will explore insights and illustrations from the field of psychology and related disciplines, and will use these to evaluate the current relevance of the psychological analysis contained in Brown v. Board of Education. Suggestions will be made for how we can monitor and improve our interactions with people of different ethnic origins, so that we may be more confident in our ability to ensure more successful building of diversity in educational settings during the twenty-first century and beyond.

The Landmine Victim Assistance Component Implemented By The Oas In Nicaragua, Carlos Orozco

In 1990, Nicaragua registered approximately 135,000 mines buried within its national territory and another 133,435 mines in military stockpiles as a result of the internal conflict witnessed in Nicaragua during the 1980s. Although I will not touch on the details related to the operations, it is important to note that Nicaragua is the most heavily mined country in Central America and on the whole continent. As of June 2004, approximately 27,400 anti-personnel mines remain buried within Nicaraguan territory.

TERMINATION OF MINOR'S PREGNANCY. WAITING PERIOD AND PARENTAL NOTIFICATION. INITIATIVE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT. Amends California Constitution to bar abortion on unemancipated minor until 48 hours after physician notifies minor's parent/legal guardian, except in medical emergency or with parental waiver. Permits judicial waiver of notice based on clear and convincing evidence of minor's maturity or minor's best interests. Physician must report abortions performed on minors and State shall compile statistics. Authorizes monetary damages for violation. Reflections Of Native American Teacher Education On Bear Ridge, Steven Locke

The Rural Educator

This study examines an elementary teacher education certification program delivered by a state university to Native American teacher aides on the reservation. Data were collected over two semesters using a Freirean critical theory framework to analyze the data and to explicate the problematic nature of Native American education. Analysis of the data indicated that the program reproduced Euro-American cultural values, was insensitive to Native American history or values, and did little to support individual teachers. Suggestions include the need for the program to acknowledge and address the historical cultural genocide that occurred in the education of Native Americans and the …
