Multiple Versus Single Antipsychotic Agents For Hospitalized Psychiatric Patients: Case-Control Study Of Risks Versus Benefits, Franca Centorrino, L. Gören, John Hennen, Paola Salvatore, James P. Kelleher, Ross J. Baldessarini Jan 2004

Multiple Versus Single Antipsychotic Agents For Hospitalized Psychiatric Patients: Case-Control Study Of Risks Versus Benefits, Franca Centorrino, L. Gören, John Hennen, Paola Salvatore, James P. Kelleher, Ross J. Baldessarini

Pharmacy Practice and Clinical Research Faculty Publications

OBJECTIVE: Since use of multiple drugs to treat psychiatric patients is increasing, and research on this practice is rare, the authors carried out a retrospective case-control study of multiple versus single antipsychotic treatment in psychiatric inpatients. METHOD: Inpatient treatment groups receiving either antipsychotic monotherapy or polytherapy were matched in terms of age, sex, diagnostic category, and admission clinical ratings (Global Assessment of Functioning [GAF] and Clinical Global Impression [CGI]), which yielded 70 subject pairs. They were compared in terms of total chlorpromazine-equivalent daily dose, changes in total daily dose, length of hospitalization, incidence of adverse effects, and changes in clinical …

M. Stanton Evans: The Theme Is Freedom Study Guide (1995-2004), Steven Alan Samson Jan 2004

M. Stanton Evans: The Theme Is Freedom Study Guide (1995-2004), Steven Alan Samson

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The key political insight of the forgotten conservative tradition is the idea of imposing limits on governmental power, in the interests of protecting freedom. Theses: 1) the limited government, free-market emphasis of conservatism is an expression of conservative values; 2) the traditionalist and libertarian strands in conservative thought are congruent, 3) at issue is the very nature of American society, institutions, and freedom. The Liberal History Lesson (a variation on the Whig Interpretation of History) alleges that religion and liberty have always been in conflict. On the contrary: Conservative doctrine on the relationship between religious value, tradition, and ideas of …

Nursing: School of Nursing Faculty Publications and Other Works

Medical-surgical nurses are an important source of information and guidance for family caregivers during health care crises. The concerns expressed by family caregivers to nurse interventionists during a supportive and informational telephone intervention are described in this study. An analysis of telephone call content using constant comparison methods identified major stressors of the family caregiver during the illness trajectory

Desolation's March: The Rise Of Personalism And The Reign Of Amusement In 21st Century America, Stephen Paul Foster Ph.D. Jan 2004

Desolation's March: The Rise Of Personalism And The Reign Of Amusement In 21st Century America, Stephen Paul Foster Ph.D.

Books Authored by Wright State Faculty/Staff

Dr. Stephen Foster (author of Melancholy Duty, Kluwer, 1997) has undertaken a critique of American decadence and moral squalor. He argues that three basic cultural phenomena have conjoined to warp and degrade the moral and cultural landscape of the country. Treated together for purposes of critique these phenomena have intertwined in the national psyche. They are the impact of personalism (via J. J. Rosseau) and the leveraged individual, the growth of the therapeutic state and the overwhelming preoccupation with entertainment. The author suggests the moral and cultural quandary these "states" have wrought and the attendant loss of artistic, moral …

Land For Maine's Future Program: Increasing The Return On A Sound Public Investment, Richard Barringer, Hugh Coxe, Jack Kartez, Catherine Reilly, Jonathan Rubin

Economics and Finance

Maine is nowhere a more special place than in the quality of its landscape and the traditions of its land use. Among the mo st privately-owned of all the states, Maine’s natural diversity and beauty combine with its traditions of resource stewardship, open access, and appreciation of nature to distinguish it in the public mind and national imagination. In recent decades, however, these traditions have come under assault from the forces of economic and social change; and the people of Maine have responded. In 1986, Governor Joseph Brennan’s Special Commission on Outdoor Recreation recognized the growing threats to Maine’s natur …

Biology Of PrpSc Accumulation In Two Natural Scrapie-Infected Sheep Flocks, Patrick Caplazi, Katherine I. O'Rourke, Cynthia Wolf, Daniel Shaw, Timothy V. Baszler Jan 2004

Biology Of PrpSc Accumulation In Two Natural Scrapie-Infected Sheep Flocks, Patrick Caplazi, Katherine I. O'Rourke, Cynthia Wolf, Daniel Shaw, Timothy V. Baszler

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

Sheep scrapie is a prion disease that requires interaction of exogenous prions with host prion protein (PrP) supporting prion formation. Disease is associated with deposition of a host-generated conformational variant of PrP, PrPsc, in a variety of tissues, including brain, resulting in fatal spongiform encephalopathy. Efficiency of PrPsc formation is determined by polymorphisms in the PrP-coding sequence. This article adds to previous data of natural sheep scrapie, concentrating on the effect of host genotype and age on PrPsc accumulation patterns during preclinical and clinical disease. Two entire scrapie-infected, predominantly Suffolk-cross, sheep flocks euthanized for regulatory purposes …

United States Department of Energy: Publications

In many subsurface situations where human health and environmental quality are at risk (e.g., contaminant hydrogeology, petroleum extraction, carbon sequestration, etc.), scientists and engineers are being asked by federal agency decision-makers to predict the fate of chemical species under conditions where both reactions and transport are processes of first-order importance.

In 2002, a working group (WG) was formed by representatives of the U.S. Geological Survey, Environmental Protection Agency,Department of Energy,Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Department of Agriculture, and Army Engineer Research and Development Center to assess the role of reactive transport modeling (RTM) in addressing these situations. Specifically, the goals of the WG …

Spectroscopic And Diffraction Study Of Uranium Speciation In Contaminated Vadose Zone Sediments From The Hanford Site, Washington State, Jeffrey Catalano, Steven Heald, John M. Zachara, Gordon Brown Jr. Jan 2004

Spectroscopic And Diffraction Study Of Uranium Speciation In Contaminated Vadose Zone Sediments From The Hanford Site, Washington State, Jeffrey Catalano, Steven Heald, John M. Zachara, Gordon Brown Jr.

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Contamination of vadose zone sediments under tank BX-102 at the Hanford site, Washington, resulted from the accidental release of 7-8 metric tons of uranium dissolved in caustic aqueous sludge in 1951. We have applied synchrotron-based X-ray spectroscopic and diffraction techniques to characterize the speciation of uranium in samples of these contaminated sediments. U LIII-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopic studies demonstrate that uranium occurs predominantly as a uranium- (VI) silicate from the uranophane group of minerals. XAFS cannot distinguish between the members of this mineral group due to the near identical local coordination environments of uranium in …

Heterotrophic Plate Count Bacteria—What Is Their Significance In Drinking Water?, Martin J. Allen, Stephen C. Edberg, Donald J. Reasoner

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

While the literature documents the universal occurrence of heterotrophic plate count (HPC) bacteria in soils, foods, air, and all sources of water, there is a lingering question as to whether this group of organisms may signal an increased health risk when elevated populations are present in drinking water. This paper reviews the relevant literature on HPC bacteria in drinking water, the lack of clinical evidence that elevated populations or specific genera within the HPC flora pose an increased health risk to any segment of the population, and the appropriate uses of HPC data as a tool to monitor drinking water …
