Characteristics Of Aboriginal Injecting Drug Users In Sydney, Australia: Prison History, Hepatitis C Status And Drug Treatment Experiences, Carolyn Day, Joanne Ross, Kate Dolan

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

Australian Aboriginals are overrepresented in prisons and tend to be overrepresented in studies of injecting drug users (IDU). The aim of this study was to examine differences between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal IDUs in terms of gender, prison history and hepatitis C status and testing. Secondary analyses were conducted on data from three cross-sectional studies of IDUs. These studies employed similar methodologies, with recruitment being through needle and syringe programs, methadone clinics, snowballing and street intercepts. All studies were coordinated through the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre. Aboriginal people were overrepresented in all studies, were more likely to have been …

Growing Up In Early Utah: The Wasatch Literary Association 1874-1878, Ronald W. Walker Jan 2004

Growing Up In Early Utah: The Wasatch Literary Association 1874-1878, Ronald W. Walker

BYU Studies

One day in early February 1874, Jim Ferguson, sensing the forlorn hope of advancing his courtship with Minnie Horne, suggested to Ort (Orson F.) Whitney and another of the boys that they organize a reading society. Ferguson "had heard, no doubt, of fond couples 'reading life's meaning in each others eyes,'" Whitney later mused, "and that was the kind of reading that most interested him." Since the seventeen-year-old Whitney found himself "in the same box with Ferguson on the girl question," the suggestion found a ready response. Whitney immediately invited those who "would make desirable members" to meet at the …

Investigating The Environmental Risks Of Transgenic Crops, Hugh Lacey Jan 2004

Investigating The Environmental Risks Of Transgenic Crops, Hugh Lacey

Philosophy Faculty Works

Legitimation of public policies that support the widespread plantings of transgenic crops presuppose, among other conditions, that (1) evidence supports that there are no unmanageable environmental risks and (2) there are no better ways to produce enough nourishing food that can dispense with the transgenics-oriented ways. This paper discusses: (a) the kinds of scientific inquiry that are needed to address (1) adequately, (b) the connections between investigations of (1) and (2), and (c) how these investigations are related with controversial social values.
A legitimação de políticas públicas que apóiam o cultivo de lavouras transgênicas em larga escala pressupõe, entre outras …

Exposure To Televised Alcohol Ads And Subsequent Adolescent Alcohol Use, Alan W. Stacy, Jennifer Zogg, Jennifer Unger, Clyde W. Dent Jan 2004

Exposure To Televised Alcohol Ads And Subsequent Adolescent Alcohol Use, Alan W. Stacy, Jennifer Zogg, Jennifer Unger, Clyde W. Dent

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Objective: To assess the impact of televised alcohol commercials on adolescents, alcohol use. Methods: Adolescents completed questionnaires about alcohol commercials and alcohol use in a prospective study. Results: A one standard deviation increase in viewing television programs containing alcohol commercials in seventh grade was associated with an excess risk of beer use (44%}, wine/liquor use (34%}, and 3-drlnk episodes (26%} in eighth grade. The strength of associations varied across exposure measures and was most consistent for beer. Conclusions: Although replication is warranted, results showed that exposure was associated with an increased risk of subsequent beer consumption and possibly other consumption …

Thinking Outside The (Bricks-And-Mortar) Box(Es): Using Cyberspace Technology To Reconceptualize Schooling And Community In The Face Of Resegregation, Jonathan D. Becker

Educational Leadership Publications

As the 50th anniversary of the landmark "Brown v. Board of Education" decision arrives, a notably gesellschaftliche (individualist, freedom-oriented, rationalist) paradigm in the education policy agenda prevails. That is to say, in the wake of a series of Supreme Court decisions and the proliferation of publicly funded, ethnocentric charter schools in the past few decades, this country has moved away from "Brown's" celebrated ideals and closer to the old idea of "separate but equal." Furthermore, the disconnect is occurring along racial and cultural lines. Thus, if we are to achieve the benefits of diversity in schooling and create a more …

Graphical Technique For Identifying A Monotonic Variance Stabilizing Transformation For Absolute Gene Intensity Signals, Kellie J. Archer, Catherine I. Dumur, Viswanathan Ramakrishnan Jan 2004

Graphical Technique For Identifying A Monotonic Variance Stabilizing Transformation For Absolute Gene Intensity Signals, Kellie J. Archer, Catherine I. Dumur, Viswanathan Ramakrishnan

Biostatistics Publications

Background

The usefulness of log2 transformation for cDNA microarray data has led to its widespread application to Affymetrix data. For Affymetrix data, where absolute intensities are indicative of number of transcripts, there is a systematic relationship between variance and magnitude of measurements. Application of the log2 transformation expands the scale of genes with low intensities while compressing the scale of genes with higher intensities thus reversing the mean by variance relationship. The usefulness of these transformations needs to be examined.

Results

Using an Affymetrix GeneChip® dataset, problems associated with applying the log2 transformation to absolute intensity …

Living Donor Liver Transplantation: Surgical Techniques And Innovations By Koichi Tanaka, Yukihiro Inomaka, And Satoshi Kaihara, Vivian Mcalister Jan 2004

Living Donor Liver Transplantation: Surgical Techniques And Innovations By Koichi Tanaka, Yukihiro Inomaka, And Satoshi Kaihara, Vivian Mcalister

Data and Test Instruments

Living-donor liver transplantation combines the techniques of hepatic resection and transplantation. The principal difference between living donation of liver and resection is the absolute requirement in the former to maintain the integrity of the liver on each side of the dividing line. To do this, the surgeon must retain the vascular supply and drainage of both sides throughout the dissection, up to the moment of graft removal. In this book, Tanaka and colleagues take us through the surgery in a manner that is at once detailed and exciting, through the generous use of magnificent electronic photography.

Review Of Surgical Limits: The Life Of Gordon Murray By Shelly Mckellar, Vivian Mcalister

Data and Test Instruments

Gordon Murray ranks as Canada’s greatest surgical pioneer, to whom history has been most unkind. Shelley McKellar has written a surgical biography that goes a long way toward explaining how this came about, and gives us a good opportunity to reassess Murray’s extraordinary career.
