Attoc159 Is A Selective Transit Peptide Receptor For The Import Of Nucleus-Encoded Chloroplast Proteins, Matthew D. Smith, Caleb M. Rounds, Fei Wang, Kunhua Chen, Meshack Afitlhile, Danny J. Schnell
Biology Faculty Publications
The members of the Toc159 family of GTPases act as the primary receptors for the import of nucleus-encoded preproteins into plastids. Toc159, the most abundant member of this family in chloroplasts, is required for chloroplast biogenesis (Bauer, J., K. Chen, A. Hiltbrunner, E. Wehrli, M. Eugster, D. Schnell, and F. Kesller, 2000, Nature, 403: 203-207) and has been shown to covalently cross-link to bound preproteins at the chloroplast surface (Ma, Y., A. Kouranov, S. LaSala, and D.J. Schnell, 1996, J. Cell Biol. 134: 1-13; Perry, S.E., and K. Keegstra, 1994, Plant Cell. 6: 93-105). These reports led to the …

America's Struggle To Develop A Consistent Legal Approach To Controversial Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research And Therapeutic Cloning: Are The Politics Getting In The Way Of Hope?, Melissa S. Burchell
Syracuse Journal of International Law and Commerce
Part I of this note evaluates human embryonic stem cell research, including an explanation of the potential benefits of this procedure and the ethical debates surrounding this type of research. Part I also identifies the legal approach to human embryonic stem cell research currently used in the U.S. Next, Part I addresses therapeutic cloning. First, therapeutic cloning is explained and then distinguished from reproductive cloning. Second, Part I discusses the ethical concerns that arise from therapeutic cloning. Third, Part I outlines the current U.S. legal approach to therapeutic cloning. Part II of this note explains the British approach to both …

ABSTRACT
Despite the importance of having an appropriate, coherent, and defensible philosophy of science, many science teachers have either given this part of their profession little thought or adhere to problematic and outdated philosophies. This article begins by tracing a brief history of the "view from nowhere" and its adoption by many teachers as the epistemological framework for teaching science. This conception of objectivity and its corresponding philosophy of science are shown to be problematically masculinist, disembodied, and aperspectival. Within this discussion, a new notion of pragmatist-feminist objectivity, as the socially conscious intersection of multiple and diverse perspectives in regard …Fluorometric Measurements Of Conformational Changes In Glutamate Transporters, H. Glutamate transporters remove glutamate from the synaptic cleft to maintain efficient synaptic communication between neurons and to prevent extracellular glutamate concentrations from reaching neurotoxic levels (1). It is thought that glutamate transporters mediate glutamate transport through a reaction cycle with conformational changes between the two major access states that alternatively expose glutamate-binding sites to the extracellular or to the intracellular solution. However, there is no direct real-time evidence for the conformational changes predicted to occur during the transport cycle. In the present study, we used voltage-clamp fluorometry to measure conformational changes in the neuronal excitatory amino acid transporter …

(Un)Masking Race-Based Intracorporate Conspiracies Under The Ku Klux Klan Act, Catherine E. Smith
(Un)Masking Race-Based Intracorporate Conspiracies Under The Ku Klux Klan Act, Catherine E. Smith
Scholarly Articles
The intracorporate conspiracy doctrine should not be applicable to § 1985(3) conspiracies. Section 2 of the Ku Klux Klan Act was designed to specifically challenge collective action and eliminate the many ways in which individuals conspired to engage in civil rights violations. Some commentators may argue that race-based intracorporate agreements are actionable under other federal antidiscrimination laws and state causes of actions. However, § 1985(3) fulfills a unique role in the national comprehensive civil rights scheme to eliminate different forms of bias-motivated and discriminatory actions. As the only federal civil conspiracy statute that punishes individuals who use collective resources to …

A Docking Score Function For Estimating Ligand-Protein Interactions: Application To Acetylcholinesterase Inhibition, Jianxin Guo, Margaret M. Hurley, Jeffery B. Wright, Gerald H. Lushington
A Docking Score Function For Estimating Ligand-Protein Interactions: Application To Acetylcholinesterase Inhibition, Jianxin Guo, Margaret M. Hurley, Jeffery B. Wright, Gerald H. Lushington
United States Army: Publications
Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition is an important research topic because of its wide range of associated health implications. A receptor-specific scoring function was developed herein for predicting binding affinities for human AChE (huAChE) inhibitors. This method entails a statistically trained weighted sum of electrostatic and van der Waals (VDW) interactions between ligands and the receptor residues. Within the 53 ligand training set, a strong correlation was found (R2 = 0.89) between computed and experimental inhibition constants. Leave-oneout cross-validation indicated high predictive power (Q2 = 0.72), and analysis of a separate 16-compound test set also produced very good correlation with …

Risk Management Criteria For Metals At Blm Mining Sites, Karl L. Ford
United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications
This report sets forth acceptable soil and sediment criteria for heavy metals released from abandoned hard rock mining sites as they relate to ecosystem management and protection of human health and wildlife. The USDI Bureau of Land Management (BLM) manages approximately 270 million acres of public lands, primarily in the Western U.S. These lands include several hundred thousand abandoned mining sites, some of which may be releasing heavy metals into the environment at levels toxic to wildlife.

Good leadership is critical for a successful school. The school revolves around the leadership at the top. It is important for administrators to have respect from teachers and students. I feel one of the best ways to gain respect is to be fair in the area of discipline. Organized structure and high expectations become achievable if there is fairness across the board. I feel it is important to make no exceptions and stand by the school policies in order for people to believe in the integrity of an administrator.
I feel good leaders must exemplify the characteristics of good, caring …

My Boobs Beg To Differ, Rebecca Hasbrouck
e-Vision Journal of Undergraduate Writing
I became scared that, instead of knocking down my opponent by my swift and skilled footwork or aggressive and intimidating moves, I would knock him down by a quick turn of my torso with a flying 34C breast. These heaping mounds began to bounce as I ran and I was positive my peers would notice. It was around this time that my mother forced me, gagged and bound (or just whining), into the car for a trip to a lingerie store.
