In recent years, spending on health care has increased. It is caused by ageing of the Polish population, and the use of more sophisticated, but more expensive, treatment and diagnostic techniques. For these reasons, management, both at the central and regional levels, has become increasingly difficult. Pharmacoeconomic evaluation is one of the tools in proper management of drugs. It is defined as the comparative analysis of alternative courses of action in terms of their costs and consequences. The aim of the study was to investigate potential role of pharmacoeconomic evaluation in decision making and management in health care in Poland …

The Gundalow Company (a non-profit 501(c)3 organization) sponsors maritime history and environmental educational programs for school groups and the public onboard the replica gundalow Captain Edward Adams from May through November in 12-15 riverfront locations in the Piscataqua region. The project funded by the NHEP in 2004 included the development of an expanded Gundalow Company education program curriculum in order to motivate all gundalow visitors to appreciate the relationship between regional maritime history, contemporary water quality issues and future stewardship responsibilities. The NHEP grant also supported the Gundalow Company’s efforts to bring the gundalow to Durham and Newmarket. The content …

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) 1 and TSC2 are thought to be involved in protein translational regulation and cell growth, and loss of their function is a cause of TSC and lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM). However, TSC1 also activates Rho and regulates cell adhesion. We found that TSC2 modulates actin dynamics and cell adhesion and the TSC1-binding domain (TSC2-HBD) is essential for this function of TSC2. Expression of TSC2 or TSC2-HBD in TSC2-/- cells promoted Rac1 activation, inhibition of Rho, stress fiber disassembly, and focal adhesion remodeling. The down-regulation of TSC1 with TSC1 siRNA in TSC2-/- cells activated Rac1 and induced loss of …

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
The nicotinic cholinergic system has been widely implicated in mediating learning and/or memory processes in human and nonhuman animals. This chapter highlights various areas of basic research in which stimulation or blockade of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) has been shown to affect an animals performance in a variety of tasks thought to measure learning and memory. For example, under certain conditions, stimulation of nAChRs by nicotine (or other nAChRs agonists) can enhance working memory of primates as measured in a delayed matching-to-sample task. Attentional processes are also improved in rats as indexed by a five-choice serial reaction time task. Further, …
Interdependent Assembly Of Specific Regulatory Lipids And Membrane Fusion Proteins Into The Vertex Ring Domain Of Docked Vacuoles, Rutilio A. Fratti, Youngsoo Jun, Alexey J. Merz, Nathan Margolis, William Wickner
Interdependent Assembly Of Specific Regulatory Lipids And Membrane Fusion Proteins Into The Vertex Ring Domain Of Docked Vacuoles, Rutilio A. Fratti, Youngsoo Jun, Alexey J. Merz, Nathan Margolis, William Wickner
Dartmouth Scholarship
Membrane microdomains are assembled by lipid partitioning (e.g., rafts) or by protein-protein interactions (e.g., coated vesicles). During docking, yeast vacuoles assemble "vertex" ring-shaped microdomains around the periphery of their apposed membranes. Vertices are selectively enriched in the Rab GTPase Ypt7p, the homotypic fusion and vacuole protein sorting complex (HOPS)-VpsC Rab effector complex, SNAREs, and actin. Membrane fusion initiates at vertex microdomains. We now find that the "regulatory lipids" ergosterol, diacylglycerol and 3- and 4-phosphoinositides accumulate at vertices in a mutually interdependent manner. Regulatory lipids are also required for the vertex enrichment of SNAREs, Ypt7p, and HOPS. Conversely, SNAREs and actin …

Because of the increasing expenditure on health care, the great majority of countries are looking for methods of reducing treatment costs. Health authorities apply a number of instruments to control prices of pharmaceuticals and their reimbursement in order to ensure the availability of adequate supplies of medicinal products at a reasonable cost, which largely depends on the specificity of medicines that improve people's health and save their lives. The paper presents methods of limiting expenditure on medicines as well as examples of national policies on price setting and reimbursement systems. It also demonstrates how European Union approaches the issues regarding …

Since the controversial article entitled "Broadening the Concept of Marketing" written by Kotler and Levy, arguments continue to abound as to the extent and success of the marketing in health-care sector. This article identifies the core critical issues addressed to marketing concept and explores the inherent difficulties of using marketing in health care. The study also presents the findings of a regional survey conducted to determine the degree of acceptance of marketing instruments in the practice of health-care units. The article concludes that marketing needs to be tailored to the particular culture of health-care sector rather than copied from the …

Together with the reform of the Polish health-care system and rationalising of financing process, the efforts of gaining patients and providing best quality would get highest importance. The Total Quality Management philosophy that analyses the patients' needs and implements continuous quality improvement activities is recognised as the most efficient among many quality assurance and improvement initiatives. In order to identify, describe and measure the developmental stage of quality systems across Polish health care, a survey has been performed. Also the problems and motivators of quality management in Poland were identified. Fifty seven purposely selected hospitals took part in the study …

The reforms undertaken in Poland have substantially changed the situation of many economic subjects. Among them are also heath-care units. The sphere of public services, in which health care is included, has been undergoing deep and dynamic changes consistent with the trends characteristic for the economy as a whole: the system of central planning is being replaced with free market economy. These changes call for an urgent and radical transformation of the present health-care management system. The article addresses the issues of financial and organisational reforms of the health-care sector that are being planned. The major goal set by the …

Economic assessment in health-care sector is an analysis of two or more alternative therapeutic programmes in respect of their costs and outcomes. Pharmacoeconomics is an economic assessment of pharmaceutical products, i.e. drugs. The aim of the pharmacoeconomic analysis is to supply information useful for the decision-making process concerning the rational allocation of health sector's expenditures. The economic analysis precisely describes the additional value of a particular treatment program for the society and presents arguments that help to choose the optimal one as well. Utilisation of economic analyses results in health sector decision making allows increasing the profitability of treatment, which …

The health-care systems functioning in the EU countries have emerged as results of varying long- and short-term conditions of political, cultural, social, and economic nature. All these factors have led to the situation in which there is a multitude of organisational and financial methods applied to health care in these countries. Despite the increase of migratory movements within the so-called common market, which brings about the need for a more intensive and regulated exchange of technology and information about the organisation of health care in each country to regulate the movement of medical personnel and patients, the organisation and financing …

According to WHO, proper evaluation of health-care programmes needs to take into consideration not only their efficacy and safety, but also their cost-effectiveness. Scarcity of resources in health-care systems triggered the necessity of economic assessment of medical procedures. Following international examples, economic evaluation of health-care programmes is starting to play an increasing role in Poland. Applying the broadest view, economic evaluation is defined as the comparative analysis of alternative courses of action in terms of their costs and consequences. This definition includes economic evaluation of prescribed drugs, summarised by the term pharmacoeconomics (from Greek "pharmacon" - drug, and Greek "oikonomia" …

Notwithstanding published articles on the nature and quality of research and scholarship in practically every other business discipline, to date there has been little systematic evaluation of relevant journals in the business law discipline. This deficiency is due, in part, to the fact that business law may still be described as a developing discipline. Thus, the focus of this article is on delineating the nature of research and scholarship within the business law discipline. Specifically, the publishing practices of business law faculty from academic institutions that were members of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International), the …
