Life Care Plans : A Resource For Caregivers, Carolyn E. Rutherford Jan 2004

Life Care Plans : A Resource For Caregivers, Carolyn E. Rutherford

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Life Care Plans have been used since the early 70s, primarily to assist in litigation involving catastrophic illness or injury. In the last decade Life Care Plans have become an important component in the field of litigation and rehabilitation. However, to date no studies have explored the impact having a Life Care Plan may have for the family Caregiver. Literature supports the need Caregivers have for detailed and concise information about their loved one's condition, plan of care and future needs. This study investigated the perceived helpfulness of the Life Care Plan to Caregivers. Using a 5-point Likert Scale, Caregivers …

Population Aging And The Rising Cost Of Public Pensions, John Bongaarts Jan 2004

Population Aging And The Rising Cost Of Public Pensions, John Bongaarts

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Rapid population aging is raising concerns about the sustainability of public pension systems in high-income countries. The first part of this study identifies the four factors that determine trends in public pension expenditures: population aging, pension benefit levels, the mean age at retirement, and the labor force participation rate. The second part presents projections to 2050 of the impact of demographic trends on public pension expenditures in the absence of changes in pension benefits, labor force participation, and age at retirement. These projections demonstrate that current trends are unsustainable, because without reforms population aging will produce an unprecedented and harmful …

Trends And Transitions In Children's Coresidence With Older Adults In Beijing Municipality, Zachary Zimmer, Xianghua Fang, Toshiko Kaneda, Zhe Tang, Julia Kwong

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

The reduction in family size in China and concurrent social and economic change are raising concerns that traditional sources of support may be eroding. This Population Council working paper paper examines a) whether rates of coresidence between older adults and their adult children in the Beijing municipality of China have been declining, and b) the determinants of coresidence and coresidence transitions. Results suggest that family support structures for the elderly, when they are facilitated through coresidence, remain basically intact, particularly for those who require the greatest amount of support. Further assessment is required to elucidate the effects of availability, need, …

Autonomy And Rehabilitation, Mohammed A. Saadah, Loai M. Saadah Jan 2004

Autonomy And Rehabilitation, Mohammed A. Saadah, Loai M. Saadah

Neurosciences

In minority world countries, autonomy is central to client focused rehabilitation, as it represents a prerequisite for effective participation in the process of rehabilitation. The diverse and dynamic paradoxes within the “autonomy paradigm” will ensure its safe application and survival in such communities. However, the strong family relationships and different cultural backgrounds of majority world countries motivate us to conclude that a “patient-family interactive deliberative process” based on accommodation and negotiation is more acceptable, reliable and implementable in these communities. Our suggested model of decision making is more convenient, particularly in cases where competency is compromised by cognitive dysfunction, political …

Oral Health Care Practices And Perceptions Among Nursing Home Residents: A Case Study., Bridget Marne Boyce Jan 2004

Oral Health Care Practices And Perceptions Among Nursing Home Residents: A Case Study., Bridget Marne Boyce

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Currently, knowledge is limited regarding the extent to which: (1) nursing home residents perceive their oral health care as being adequate, (2) nursing home residents’ perceptions and actual oral health status are congruent, and (3) oral health care outcomes and residents’ perceptions of their own oral health care are influenced by levels of physical functioning. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the oral health practices and perceptions of oral health care among cognitively intact nursing home residents. The instruments utilized were a resident interview and an oral health care evaluation. All participants (n = 10) completed the assessments. …

Development And Validation Of A Scale Of Perceived Control Across Multiple Domains, Beth Arburn Davis Jan 2004

Development And Validation Of A Scale Of Perceived Control Across Multiple Domains, Beth Arburn Davis

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

The importance of perceived control in people's lives is vast. Indeed, there is much research to support the notion that the perception of control is as important, if not more important, than actual control. This idea can be instrumental in therapy. Patients may have a sense of control in one area, but not in another, and this may cause problems for them. It is likely that an understanding of how much control they believe they have could help patients in therapy. This study outlined the historical and research aspects of the constructs of control and of perceived control, its general …

Identification Of Risk Factors For Crashes Involving Older Drivers, Nagasujana M Pulugurtha

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The focus of thesis is to evaluate the role of geometric features and traffic operations related characteristics on the involvement of the older drivers in motor vehicle crashes. Examples of potential factors influencing older driver crashes include intersection/roadway geometrics, type of traffic control, traffic signal phasing, light conditions. A methodology is developed to model older driver involvement in crashes. Data from Clark County, Nevada, are used to demonstrate the application of the methodology. The region has seen more than a 85 percent increase in elderly population during the last decade. Crash data from 1998 to 2002 are used. Other data …

2004 Rosabeth Moss Kanter Award For Excellence In Work-Family Research Publication, Shelley M. Macdermid

Center for Families Publications

Over the past few decades there has been an explosion of research on the relationships between work and non-work life. Researchers studying these issues come from many disciplines and professions, resulting in fragmented awareness of one another's work. In addition, exchanges of research information among scholars, consultants and corporate practitioners are limited. Many research studies are not well-grounded in theory, slowing the generation of new knowledge. As a result, it has been difficult to develop shared standards for research quality and to avoid redundance in the research literature. Some excellent studies have failed to have impact because of lack of …

Estrogen And Hippocampal Synaptic Plasticity, Michael R. Foy, Michael Baudry, Richard Thompson Jan 2004

Estrogen And Hippocampal Synaptic Plasticity, Michael R. Foy, Michael Baudry, Richard Thompson

Psychological Science Faculty Works

During the past several years, there has been increasing interest in the effects of estrogen on neural function. This enthusiasm is driven, in part, by the results of early clinical studies suggesting that estrogen therapy given after menopause may prevent, or at least delay, the onset of Alzheimer's disease in older women. However, later clinical trials of women with probable Alzheimer's disease had contrary results. Much of the current research related to estrogen and brain function is focused in two directions. One involves clinical studies that examine the potential of estrogen in protecting against cognitive decline during normal aging and …

An Analysis Of Mentorship In Michigan Police Agencies, Jeffrey G. Swanson Jan 2004

An Analysis Of Mentorship In Michigan Police Agencies, Jeffrey G. Swanson

Masters Theses

The purpose of this research is to investigate how newer police officers are familiarized into their agency with respect to the manner in which they were trained and mentored. The concept of mentoring programs has been highly successful in the private and business sectors for many years. Since the concept of formal mentoring programs in law enforcement is largely limited to date, this study incorporates research in several other disciplines, to determine if there may be a corollary regarding law enforcement and other disciplines, and if so, to what degree mentoring exists among patrol officers. A survey was distributed to …

Exploring The Changing Relationship Between Formal Carers, Informal Carers And Carees During The Elder-Care Process, Sing Nam Hung Jan 2004

Exploring The Changing Relationship Between Formal Carers, Informal Carers And Carees During The Elder-Care Process, Sing Nam Hung

Lingnan Theses

There are increasing studies looking at effects of caregiving to the frail elderly in Hong Kong. However, many studies often focus only on a single dimension of caregiving in either informal or formal carers without the focus on the elderly that receiving cares. Few studies have viewed elder caregiving as an integrative and dynamic approach, with limited examination and exploration on the caring processes and interactions between the formal and informal carers and elderly carees, and the reasons for this pattern.

Thus a caregiving triad might be considered as consisting of the elderly caree, the formal and informal carer, and …

A Study Of Why Older People 65+ Do Or Do Not Exercise, Nancy Mccoin Williams Jan 2004

A Study Of Why Older People 65+ Do Or Do Not Exercise, Nancy Mccoin Williams

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative study uses interviews to examine factors explaining why 20 elderly individuals from a variety of occupations and still living in the community independently did or did not exercise. Within the limits of this qualitative study, the reasons elderly participants gave for avoiding exercise included fear of injury, joint pain, poor health, complications from various degenerative diseases, and a lack of enjoyment of exercise. The reasons for exercising included necessity due to post-heart attack motivation, work-site exercise program or equipment availability, opportunity to habituate work-related tasks, spouse support, history of exercise experience, ability to exercise without injury, enjoyment of …

Population Churn: The Migration Flow Of Florida, Marguerite Cashen Jan 2004

Population Churn: The Migration Flow Of Florida, Marguerite Cashen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent research has focused attention on the concerns of migration in and out of Florida and within the counties themselves. In 1949, Cape Canaveral was established and the boom was on. The character of the state dramatically transformed after 1965, when plans were announced to convert twenty-seven thousand acres of swampland into Walt Disney World. Since then, Orlando's evolution is divided into two eras: before and after Walt Disney World. Orlando has changed from a quiet town whose function was to service the surrounding citrus growing regions in a sparsely populated Orange County to a booming metropolis. Has the growth …

The Sundown Syndrome: Relation Between Etiological Variables And Temporal Patterns Of Agitation., Lesley P. Koven Jan 2004

The Sundown Syndrome: Relation Between Etiological Variables And Temporal Patterns Of Agitation., Lesley P. Koven

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Sundowning refers to the exacerbation of symptoms of arousal or impairment in the late afternoon, evening, or night among older adults with dementia. Because sundowning is associated with immense burden on family caregivers and institutional nursing staff, determining its etiology remains an important goal so that appropriate interventions may be developed. The current study examined the association between sundowning and variables representing he primary etiological theories of sundowning in a sample of 20 nursing home patients with Alzheimer's disease. Specifically, theories relating sundowning to circadian rhythm disturbances, sleep disruption, and overstimulation were tested. Sundowners were found to have a later …

Older Lesbian Perspectives On Advance Care Planning For The End Of Life, Jean W. Powell Jan 2004

Older Lesbian Perspectives On Advance Care Planning For The End Of Life, Jean W. Powell

Open Access Dissertations

This study used grounded theory methodology and in-depth interviews with 12 older lesbians to investigate three research questions: (1) How do participants define and engage in the process of end-of-life planning? (2) Are there special issues associated with end-of-life planning that participants believe are different from those faced by heterosexual women? and (3) How do participants describe a good death and what steps might make a good death more likely? The participants consisted of an ethnically diverse sample of 12 self-identified lesbian women between 60 and 80 years of age. Each participant responded to semi-structured interview questions. Each interview was …

The Influence Of Sexual Orientation And Gender On The Social Support Networks Of Middle-Aged And Older Adults., S. Melinda Spencer Jan 2004

The Influence Of Sexual Orientation And Gender On The Social Support Networks Of Middle-Aged And Older Adults., S. Melinda Spencer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Social support issues have not been examined extensively among middle-aged and older lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) adults, despite evidence that the aging experience may differ between these individuals and same-aged heterosexuals. This study compared the structure (network composition) and function (positive and negative inter-personal interactions) of social support across gender and sexual orientation and how psychological well-being varied as a function of these variables. During this study, 105 participants were administered a survey in either a mail-back or an online format. No group differences emerged with regard to psychological well-being or overall social network size, but significant variations were …
