Strain Experienced By Caregivers Of Dementia Patients Receiving Palliative Care: Findings From The Palliative Excellence In Alzheimer’S Care Efforts (Peace) Program, Sadhna Diwan, Gavin W. Hougham, Greg A. Sachs

Faculty Publications

Programs that provide palliative care to individuals with dementia, which is a progressive terminal illness, are likely to encounter different issues (e.g., management of problem behaviors, caregiver strain extending over years) from those typically addressed by hospice programs. Little research is available on palliative care for individuals with dementia who live in the community. This study examines predictors of types of strain experienced by caregivers of community-dwelling patients with dementia enrolled in a unique demonstration program titled Palliative Excellence in Alzheimer Care Efforts (PEACE), which moved palliative care"upstream," integrating palliative care into the primary care of patients with dementia.Data were collected …

An Interdisciplinary Learning Experience Through Applied Clinical Practice With Community Volunteers, Dana Howell, Nancy Devine, Lisa Portsman Jan 2004

An Interdisciplinary Learning Experience Through Applied Clinical Practice With Community Volunteers, Dana Howell, Nancy Devine, Lisa Portsman

Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy Faculty and Staff Research

Allied health professionals typically begin working on an interdisciplinary health care team immediately upon entering the workforce. Interdisciplinary health care teams are believed to be cost-effective, to result in better patient outcomes, and to lower staff burnout and turnover. Although teamwork often is standard practice in the workplace, allied health students may receive little to no formal training in working with other professionals while in school. Instead, it may be assumed that this knowledge is inherent or that developing the skills necessary to work as part of a team while on clinical affiliation or postgraduation is acceptable.

Improving Psychological Well-Being And Adjustment To Enhance Positive Aging, Monica J. Padilla Jan 2004

Improving Psychological Well-Being And Adjustment To Enhance Positive Aging, Monica J. Padilla

Graduate Research Papers

The elderly are the fastest growing population in the United States. With this increase in population comes the need for help in improving psychological well-being and enhancine adjustment. This paper explores three factors that may benefit the adjustment process for the elderly population. These factors are religion, social support, and intergenerational programs. The need for mental health counselors in this field will continue to increase as the population continues to grow older. In combination with counseling and the three factors of religion, social support and intergenerational programs, adjustment for the elderly can be optimistic.

Caregiver Education And Service Utilization In African American Families Dealing With Dementia, Constance L. Coogle Jan 2004

Caregiver Education And Service Utilization In African American Families Dealing With Dementia, Constance L. Coogle

Virginia Center on Aging Publications

For more than a decade attention has been focused on Alzheimer’s family caregivers in African American communities. The Fourth Report of the Advisory Panel on Alzheimer’s Disease to the U. S. Congress and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services calls for “…public education and outreach efforts specifically targeted to ethnic elders and their families and communities through the development and dissemination of culturally relevant materials emphasizing both the established facts about [Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders] and the efficacy of seeking treatment.” (Advisory Panel on Alzheimer’s Disease, 1993, p. 50). While federal financing and state initiatives have addressed …

Age Differences In Central (Semantic) And Peripheral Processing: The Importance Of Considering Both Response Times And Errors, Philip A. Allen, Martin D. Murphy, Miron Kaufman, Karen E. Groth, Ana Begovic Jan 2004

Age Differences In Central (Semantic) And Peripheral Processing: The Importance Of Considering Both Response Times And Errors, Philip A. Allen, Martin D. Murphy, Miron Kaufman, Karen E. Groth, Ana Begovic

Physics Faculty Publications

In this project we examined the effect of adult age on visual word recognition by using combined reaction time (RT) and accuracy methods based on the Hick–Hyman law. This was necessary because separate Brinley analyses of RT and errors resulted in contradicting results. We report the results of a lexical decision task experiment (with 96 younger adults and 97 older adults). We transformed the error data into entropy and then predicted RT by using entropy values separately for exposure duration (thought to influence peripheral processes) and word frequency (thought to influence central processes). For exposure duration, the entropy–RT functions indicate …

Chronic Medical Illness : The Counselor's Role, Diana J. Cira Jan 2004

Chronic Medical Illness : The Counselor's Role, Diana J. Cira

Graduate Research Papers

In the next few decades, the number of chronically medically ill individuals in the United States will increase dramatically. To implement necessary interventions to improve their care, the United States health care system must make changes in the approaches used for these individuals. Counselors can play a critical role in these changes. By incorporating counselors in the care of individuals with chronic medical illnesses, the health care system will be better able to provide interventions that aid in effectively coping with the illnesses and the many psychosocial ramifications of the illnesses.

Maternal Age As A Determinant Of Larval Growth And Survival In A Marine Fish, Sebastes Melanops, Steven A. Berkeley, Colin Chapman, Susan M. Sogard Jan 2004

Maternal Age As A Determinant Of Larval Growth And Survival In A Marine Fish, Sebastes Melanops, Steven A. Berkeley, Colin Chapman, Susan M. Sogard

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Relative body size has long been recognized as a factor influencing reproductive success in fishes, but maternal age has only recently been considered. We monitored growth and starvation resistance in larvae from 20 female black rockfish (Sebastes melanops), ranging in age from five to 17 years. Larvae from the oldest females in our experiments had growth rates more than three times as fast and survived starvation more than twice as long as larvae from the youngest females. Female age was a far better predictor of larval performance than female size. The apparent underlying mechanism is a greater provisioning …

Chicago's Home For The Aged And Infirm Colored People: A Paradigm For Examining Community Viability Among African-Americans In 20th Century Chicago, Susan C. Reed, Nancy Davis Jan 2004

Chicago's Home For The Aged And Infirm Colored People: A Paradigm For Examining Community Viability Among African-Americans In 20th Century Chicago, Susan C. Reed, Nancy Davis

College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Faculty and Staff Works

For decades. African Americans, faced with enortnoiis exclusion by the majority population, built hundreds of social institutions to provide basic services for their commutiities. The history of the Chicago's Home for Aged and Infirm Colored People illustrates changes in African American leadership in community institutions that coincided with shifting demographic patterns and the rise of the Civil Rights movement. Middle class leaders retnaitied committed to the home after migration accelerated and decreasing membership in women s social clubs diminished available resources. Implications for the historical role of the Black middle-class in sustaining comtnunity institutions are discussed.
