Hiring And Retaining High-Quality Teachers: What Principals Can Do, Roseanne L. Williby Dec 2004

Hiring And Retaining High-Quality Teachers: What Principals Can Do, Roseanne L. Williby

Journal of Catholic Education

Many Catholic school principals have limited assistance from their respective central offices in the recruitment and selection of teachers, especially if their objective is to recruit candidates of color or candidates for a particular subject area. Aware that teacher quality is related to student achievement, Catholic school principals must employ up-to-date, effective recruitment and hiring strategies to compete for qualified candidates in today’s market. Mindful that teacher recruitment programs alone will not solve staffing problems, principals must remain vigilant for causes of low retention and strategize to retain their high-quality teachers. Implementing an intensive induction and mentoring program with expert …

Weir River Estuary: Land Protection Plan, Chantal Lefebvre, Michelle Portman Dec 2004

Weir River Estuary: Land Protection Plan, Chantal Lefebvre, Michelle Portman

Urban Harbors Institute Publications

If economic growth were the only measure of a community’s health and vitality, then the communities of Cohasset, Hingham, and Hull are fairing well. But this economic success is generally accompanied by changes in the physical landscape that can be unsettling for residents, especially when it means more development and expansion at the expense of culturally and socially important open space areas such as parks, woods, and marshes. The rapid pace and fragmented nature of such sprawling development gives communities little opportunity to come to terms with the long-term impacts, which in turn can lead to a sense of powerlessness …

Patriotism, Nationalism, And The War On Terror: A Mild Plea In Avoidance, Winston P. Nagan, Craig Hammer Dec 2004

Patriotism, Nationalism, And The War On Terror: A Mild Plea In Avoidance, Winston P. Nagan, Craig Hammer

UF Law Faculty Publications

Professor Viet Dinh, a major drafter of and architectural influence upon the USA PATRIOT Act, provides an indirect scholarly justification for the far-reaching powers of the act in his article, Nationalism in the Age of Terror. Part II of this Commentary begins by exploring the ostensible underpinnings of Dinh's article by examining his understanding of nationalism. Part III explains why crony nationalism is not the best defense against global terrorism. Part IV then analyzes some significant United States foreign policy undertakings that have arguably negatively affected United States national security. Finally, in Part V we conclude by gleaning lessons from …

Tinners And The Stannaries: Law, Life, And Labor In Fourteenth-Century Cornwall, Michael Kurt Deen Dec 2004

Tinners And The Stannaries: Law, Life, And Labor In Fourteenth-Century Cornwall, Michael Kurt Deen

Masters Theses

Based on extensive archival research, this thesis analyzes the socio-economic position occupied by fourteenth-century tinners in Cornwall, England. The tinners represented a privileged group of laborers in the later Middle Ages, and the records of their stannary courts provide a unique glimpse into their lives. the evidence from these records show that the stannaries of Cornwall experienced a transformation of the structure of labor after the Black Death out of tin production and into agriculture. The result was a shift from a system overwhelmingly dominated by independent prospectors, dependant on credit for survival, to one which included large-scale operations owned …

Slope Stability Analysis Of A Lake Michigan Coastal Bluff, Gregory Carlton Young Dec 2004

Slope Stability Analysis Of A Lake Michigan Coastal Bluff, Gregory Carlton Young

Masters Theses

Bluff failure along the Lake Michigan coast can be produced primarily by increased pore pressure from perched water tables above lacustrine clay deposits. To test this theory, a site in Allegan County, Michigan with alternating layers of sand, clay and glacial till was chosen for bluff failure monitoring. Historically, the site experiences sporadic massive failures as opposed to neighboring sites that show more regular and uniform displacements. Four pole and cable monitoring lines were measured bi-weekly from December 2001 to October 2003. Lake levels were low and no erosion of material at the base of the slope occurred. Slumps above …

Factors Controlling Landslide Initiation As A Result Of July 2001 High-Precipitation Events In A Section Of The Lower New River Gorge, West Virginia, M. Patrick Kish

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Several geologic and physical factors affect the location of landslides associated with the July 2001 high precipitation events in Lower New River Gorge, West Virginia. The surficial geology of the heavily mined landscape was mapped using ArcGis 8.3 and four specific factors related to the landslides were identified. Road building was shown statistically to have a positive influence on the location of landslides. Slope aspect, slope angles, and elevation were also shown to have strong relationships with landslide initiations.;A landslide initiation risk map was created by overlaying the physical and geological factors favorable for landslide initiation. The risk map outlines …

Depositional Environments And Sequence Stratigraphy Of The Rockwell-Price Formation In Western Maryland, South-Central Pennsylvania, And Northern West Virginia, Darin A. Dolezal

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Price Formation of northern West Virginia consists of Upper Devonian - Lower Mississippian siliciclastic rocks that are primarily marine. Members of the Price Formation include from oldest to youngest the Oswayo, Cussewago, Riddlesburg Shale, and Rockwell. Rocks of the Price Formation are considered to be of genetic and temporal equivalence to the Rockwell Formation in south-central Pennsylvania, western Maryland, and the eastern West Virginia panhandle.;The research attempts to (1) interpret sedimentary facies and their depositional environments and (2) identify stratigraphic relationships across six outcrops in the central Appalachian basin. Outcrops have been measured and described along a 150 km …

Commitment And Cognitive Reinforcement In Workplace Values-Oriented Ethics Programs, Robert M. Krug Dec 2004

Commitment And Cognitive Reinforcement In Workplace Values-Oriented Ethics Programs, Robert M. Krug

Student Scholarship

Organizations requiring their employees to maintain consistent standards of ethical behavior have need of a means of disseminating the required standards throughout the organization. The use of selected workplace programs\, such as workplace ethics programs\, has been found to fulfill that requirement. The creation of certain types of workplace ethics programs requires the establishment of employee commitment to those programs\, as well as a means of reinforcing that commitment. This paper provides a preliminary conceptual framework for identifying and studying those elements that aid in the long-term sustainability of workplace ethics programs. Two related theories\, work commitment theory and innovation …

La Vivienda Colectiva De Los Yanomami, Graziano Gasparini, Luise Margolies Dec 2004

La Vivienda Colectiva De Los Yanomami, Graziano Gasparini, Luise Margolies

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

This article on the shapono, the traditional dwelling of the Yanomami, is taken from our book, Arquitectura Indígena de Venezuela. The Yanomami are one of the three indigenous groups of the tropical forest region of lowland Venezuela who build large collective dwellings that house the entire community. In contrast to the neighboring Ye’kwana and Wôthuha, who inhabit closed structures located near large waterways, the Yanomami are forest people whose traditional shapono is a structure opening onto a large central patio. Here, we examine the cultural division of space into private, semiprivate, and public areas in the context of Yanomami …

West Virginia Coal Fly Ash Sorption Of Btex, Jerome C. Wentz Dec 2004

West Virginia Coal Fly Ash Sorption Of Btex, Jerome C. Wentz

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Sorption is a term used in the environmental field to describe how chemical contaminants in soil and groundwater adhere to solid particles such as: clay, peat and activated carbon for the purposes of remediation, fate and transport. A potential surrogate for sorption of chemical contaminants in groundwater is coal fly ash. Batch test experiments have demonstrated coal fly ash's ability to remove hydrophobic, organic petroleum contaminants including: benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX) in groundwater through the processes of sorption. Coal fly ash is a byproduct material of coal fired power plants that is often disposed of on-site or at …

Annotation Manager: An Automated Web-Based Content Management System For Digital Libraries With Annotated Bibliographies, Frenny Thomas

Theses and Dissertations

With the expansion of the World Wide Web in the 90s, individuals (especially students) are always on a quest for information resources especially in the form of Web sites. Yet many of them are overwhelmed when faced with deciding which site will best suit their research needs. As a result, these individuals may select a resource for less than optimal reasons. To ease some of the burden, libraries have made great advances to provide a place to organize information resources. Such places are called library portals, and they typically provide a gateway to web resources by categorizing and annotating them …

Channel Geomorphology Relationships For The Beaver Creek Watershed, Atif Hamid Dec 2004

Channel Geomorphology Relationships For The Beaver Creek Watershed, Atif Hamid

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The proposed Appalachian Corridor H will be built through some of the most rugged terrain in West Virginia. The Corridor H section from Davis to Bismarck passes through the Beaver Creek watershed, located in Tucker County, West Virginia, which has been heavily affected by historic mining, deteriorating the water quality conditions of the Beaver Creek watershed. Due to the construction of Corridor H, some of the streams will be disturbed from their present courses. Hence, stream restoration work for these streams is inevitable. It is important to develop a family of stream geometry curves that relate the bankfull parameters as …

Lumbee Origins: The Weyanoke-Kearsey Connection, J. Cedric Woods

Southern Anthropologist

To determine the historic Virginia tribe or tribes from which the Lumbee may be descended, I have decided to search the records of North Carolina and Virginia and see where surnames linked to the Lumbee in the eighteenth, nineteenth, and early twentieth centuries appear. My goal is to see which, if any, have documented ties to specific Virginia Indian communities.
