History Of Asian Cannery Workers In The Pacific Northwest, Tatsuya Fukunaga May 2004

History Of Asian Cannery Workers In The Pacific Northwest, Tatsuya Fukunaga

Arctic and Northern Studies

From the mid 1860s to the eve of World War II, Asian workers, predominantly Chinese, Japanese, and Filipinos, constituted a significant part of the labor force in the Pacific Northwest cannery industry. In contrast to the prevalent notion of Asian workers' exploitation, their struggles in the industry have long been marginalized. Asian workers endured cruel working conditions and attempted to find ways to achieve their individual ambitions. Despite the hardships they faced in the course of their participation in West Coast capitalism, the Asian workers in the Pacific Northwest began adapting to the new environment, and their social status grew …

Change Of Heart Among Aboriginal Canadians Toward The Mackenzie Valley Pipeline Project, 1970-2003, Galina V. Kirsanova May 2004

Change Of Heart Among Aboriginal Canadians Toward The Mackenzie Valley Pipeline Project, 1970-2003, Galina V. Kirsanova

Arctic and Northern Studies

The last three decades witnessed an astonishing change of heart among the Mackenzie Valley and Delta's aboriginal groups toward the reemerged Mackenzie Valley Pipeline project and associated industrial development. Vehement confrontation between indigenous residents of the northern Homelands and proponents of a new industrial Frontier has given way to mutually beneficial cooperation. This thesis examines the factors of this attitudinal change. First, the Berger Report and aboriginal testimonies are used to reveal the roots of the previous native opposition to the project, i.e., lack of control, inadequate capacities, and possible threats to subsistence. Next is the analysis of the current …

Alternative Sampling And Estimation Methods For Multispecies Trawl Surveys, Sherri Christine Dressel May 2004

Alternative Sampling And Estimation Methods For Multispecies Trawl Surveys, Sherri Christine Dressel

Marine Biology

Multispecies demersal trawl surveys are used in the United States and internationally to estimate the relative abundance of commercial and non-commercial fish species. Their usefulness for estimating species' abundance is often limited by the variance associated with estimates. This study implemented and evaluated alternative sampling and estimation methods, with the goal to incorporate additional sources of information for increased precision of individual species' estimates from multispecies trawl surveys. First, habitat characteristics and past spatial distributions of four flatfish species' density were incorporated into a multispecies trawl survey design conducted in Kalsin and Middle Bays, Kodiak Island, Alaska. Stratification by depth …

Application Of Molecular Markers To Mixed-Stock Analysis Of Yukon River Fall Chum Salmon, Blair G. Flannery May 2004

Application Of Molecular Markers To Mixed-Stock Analysis Of Yukon River Fall Chum Salmon, Blair G. Flannery

Fisheries

Country of origin provides the basis for allocating harvests of Yukon River chum salmon. The genetic divergence among Yukon River chum salmon populations adjacent to the international border as revealed by allozyme and micro satellite variation is insufficient to determine the country of origin of returning fish using mixed-stock analysis (MSA). Consequently, we investigated the resolution provided by alternative genetic markers in an attempt to detect levels of divergence that would be sufficient for MSA. We analyzed 10 Yukon River chum salmon populations for variation at 30 variable amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) loci and for mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) restriction …

A Spatiotemporal Query Service For Mobile Users In Sensor Networks, Chenyang Lu, Guoliang Xing, Octav Chipara, Chien-Liang Fok, Sangeeta Bhattacharya May 2004

A Spatiotemporal Query Service For Mobile Users In Sensor Networks, Chenyang Lu, Guoliang Xing, Octav Chipara, Chien-Liang Fok, Sangeeta Bhattacharya

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

This paper presents MobiQuery, a spatiotemporal query service that allows mobile users to periodically gather information from their surrounding areas through a wireless sensor network. A key advantage of MobiQuery lies in its capability to meet stringent spatiotemporal performance constraints crucial to many applications. These constraints include query latency, data freshness and fidelity, and changing query areas due to user mobility. A novel just-in-time prefetching algorithm enables MobiQuery to main-tain robust spatiotemporal guarantees even when nodes op-erate under extremely low duty cycles. Furthermore, it sig-nificantly reduces the storage cost and network contention caused by continuous queries from mobile users. We …

The Influence Of The El Niño-Southern Oscillation On Cloud-To-Ground Lightning Activity Along The Gulf Coast Of The United States, Mark R. Lajoie May 2004

The Influence Of The El Niño-Southern Oscillation On Cloud-To-Ground Lightning Activity Along The Gulf Coast Of The United States, Mark R. Lajoie

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the response of lightning to the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in the vicinity of the U.S. Gulf Coast region and nearby adjacent waters of the Gulf of Mexico, for the years 1995-2002. The Gulf Coast region was selected for this study because of its high flash density (Orville and Huffines, 2001) and because it is an area where the ENSO fingerprint is very clearly demonstrated on both temperature and precipitation patterns (CPC, 2002). Additionally, this geographic domain roughly matches the only known study on this topic (Goodman et al., 2000). Winter is the season …

Using Problem-Oriented Policing To Reduce Sexual Assaults, André B. Rosay, Robert H. Langworthy May 2004

Using Problem-Oriented Policing To Reduce Sexual Assaults, André B. Rosay, Robert H. Langworthy

Presentations

Alaska generally and Anchorage specifically have been plagued by the incidence of sexual assaults. From 1982 to 2001, the rate of forcible rape per 100,000 in Anchorage was, on average, 122 percent higher than the U.S. rate. To combat this problem, the authors engaged in a problem-oriented policing exercise in cooperation with the Anchorage Police Department. They began this exercise by performing a detailed descriptive analysis of sexual assaults in Anchorage. Data were collected from 541 reports of sexual assault cases reported to the Anchorage Police Department in 2000 and 2001. These data contain detailed information on the assaults, victims, …

Where Do High Tech Commercial Innovations Come From?, Lewis Branscomb May 2004

Where Do High Tech Commercial Innovations Come From?, Lewis Branscomb

Duke Law & Technology Review

On February 19, 2004, Dr. Lewis Branscomb gave the Meredith and Kip Frey Lecture in Intellectual Property at Duke Law School. In his speech, Dr. Branscomb discussed various models for turning basic scientific inventions into high-tech innovations and highlighted the roles that universities, private investors, and intellectual property law play in each model. Dr. Branscomb concluded that this intermediary process is the most important step in getting high-tech innovations to market.

Efficient Power Management Based On Application Timing Semantics For Wireless Sensor Networks, Octav Chipara, Chenyang Lu, Gruia-Catalin Roman

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

This paper proposes Efficient Sleep Scheduling based on Application Timing (ESSAT), a novel power manage-ment scheme that aggressively exploits the timing seman-tics of wireless sensor network applications. We present three ESSAT protocols each of which integrates (1) a light-weight traffic shaper that actively shapes the workload inside the network to achieve predictable timing proper-ties over multiple hops, and (2) a local scheduling algorithm that wakes up nodes just-in-time based on the tim-ing properties of shaped workloads. Our ESSAT protocols have several distinguishing features. First, they can save significant energy with minimal delay penalties. Second, they do not maintain TDMA schedules …
