Chemometrics Modelling Of Environmental Data, Roma Tauler, Emma Peré-Trepat, Silvia Lacorte, Damià Barceló Jul 2004

Chemometrics Modelling Of Environmental Data, Roma Tauler, Emma Peré-Trepat, Silvia Lacorte, Damià Barceló

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Environmental monitoring studies produce huge amounts of concentration values of chemicalsspread at distant geographical sites and during different time periods. Moreover, the content of chemicals isalso estimated at different environmental compartments (i.e. air, water, sediments, biota...). All these datavalues are difficult to cope and evaluate in a simple and fast way using simple univariate statistical tools, specially due to their large number and to their multivariate correlation. In order to discover relevant patternswithin large multivariate data sets, the application of modern chemometric methods based in statisticalmultivariate data analysis and in Factor Analysis is proposed. The basic assumption of chemometric methodsis that …

Computational Modeling Of Environmental Processes: A Hindcast Of Wind Atlas Over Irish Waters, Nandamudi Vijaykumar, Jeremy Gault, Robert Devoy, Declan Dunne, Cathal O'Mahony

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Numerous research projects are currently being conducted to establish a link between globalclimate change and the risks to coastal and marine environments. As part of a wider European 5th FrameworkProject, HIPOCAS, an attempt is being made to establish this link for the Irish and Celtic waters. To facilitatethis a wind hindcast was conducted for this region for subsequent integration with a wave model. This paperoutlines the experiences of using the computational models selected for this project and the necessity ofevaluating the reliability of the atmospheric model before integrating it into the wave model.

Incorporating Level Set Methods In Geographical Information Systems (Gis) For Land-Surface Process Modeling, D. Pullar Jul 2004

Incorporating Level Set Methods In Geographical Information Systems (Gis) For Land-Surface Process Modeling, D. Pullar

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Land-surface processes include a broad class of models that operate at a landscape scale. Currentmodelling approaches tend to be specialised towards one type of process, yet it is the interaction of processesthat is increasing seen as important to obtain a more integrated approach to land management. This paperpresents a technique and a tool that may be applied generically to landscape processes. The technique tracksmoving interfaces across landscapes for processes such as water flow, biochemical diffusion, and plantdispersal. Its theoretical development applies a Lagrangian approach to motion over a Eulerian grid space bytracking quantities across a landscape as an evolving front. …

Ecoregion Classification Using A Bayesian Approach And Model-Based Clustering, D. Pullar, S. Low Choy, W. Rochester

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Ecological regions are increasingly used as a spatial unit for planning and environmentalmanagement. It is important to define these regions in a scientifically defensible way to justify any decisionsmade on the basis that they are representative of broad environmental assets. The paper describes amethodology and tool to identify cohesive bioregions. The methodology applies an elicitation process toobtain geographical descriptions for bioregions, each of these is transformed into a Normal density estimateon environmental variables within that region. This prior information is balanced with data classification ofenvironmental datasets using a Bayesian statistical modelling approach to objectively map ecological regions. The method is called …

The objective of the AQUADAPT Project (www.aquadapt.net) is to develop strategic toolsto inform adaptive integrated water resource policy using a co-evolutionary approach. In Spain amethodology has been developed in the framework of an integrative study to identify evidence of coevolutionaryprocesses between the hydrological system and the water-using communities of the MarinaBaixa over a period of 50 years. The Marina Baixa is comprised of 18 municipalities each with radicallydifferent land-use patterns spread over an area of 671km2. The research task is complicated by the factthat Spain is a country that is currently debating the merits of a move from demand management …

Assessing Management Systems For The Conservation Of Open Landscapes Using An Integrated Landscape Model Approach, M. Rudner, R. Biedermann, B. Schröder, M. Kleyer

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The aim of the MOSAIK-project is to test alternative management systems regarding theirefficiency in maintaining the characteristic species composition of dry grasslands. We present an integratedlandscape model approach to test an alternative management system for applicability in preserving drygrasslands. By rototilling, i.e. cyclic, massive disturbance in the vegetation cover, we established a controlledmosaic cycle comprising a successional series from heavily disturbed areas to grassland and shrubs. Thedisturbance regime affects the landscape on different temporal and spatial scales. The resulting shiftingmosaics determine the habitat qualities for plant and animal species. Changes in habitat quality may reducethe survival of local or regional …

Simulation Of Stream Flow In The Yantra River Basin, Bulgaria Via A Gis-Based Modeling Approach, T. Hristov, B. Evans, V. Ioncheva

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

This paper describes the simulation of stream flow in ungauged watersheds using the computermodel BISTRA (Basin Impacts of Simulated Transport from Rural Areas), developed by the PennsylvaniaState University in collaboration with the Institute of Water Problems, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Themain purpose of this GIS-based model is the quantification of diffuse pollution loads at the catchment level. To achieve this, BISTRA contains a sub-model for simulating hydrology in a catchment based on genericclimate and landscape-related factors (e.g., daily precipitation and temperatures, soil, topography, land use, interdependence between surface and underground waters, etc.) which makes it possible to quantify monthlyrunoff, infiltration, and stream …

Assessing The Feasibility Of Using Radar Satellite Data To Detect Flood Extent And Floodplain Structures, Edith Stabel Jul 2004

Assessing The Feasibility Of Using Radar Satellite Data To Detect Flood Extent And Floodplain Structures, Edith Stabel

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

River dynamics and hydrological behaviour are strongly influenced by human activities both in the catchment areas and in the floodplains. The knowledge of recent and historical river dynamics and related morphological and structural changes on the land surface (e.g. sedimentation, accumulation, river bed movement) is essential in assessing the flood risk and the vulnerability of human resources and structures. Earth Observation (EO) systems provide data to monitor and to analyse both, the river dynamics and small surface changes. Especially, radarbased systems and interferometric data analysis are of high interest. Along selected sites in the River Odra area, we analysed the …

Tools To Think With? Towards Understanding The Use And Impact Of Model-Based Support Tools, Brian Mcintosh, R. A. F. Seaton, P. Jeffrey

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Formal models are an established technology for research in the environmental sciences. For several years now there has been an effort to enhance the re-usability of computer models for research purposes and to transfer the perceived benefits of formal modelling to environmental planning and policymaking. These efforts have resulted in the creation of a variety of support tools including DSS and modelling frameworks. However, there are a number of issues which may pose barriers to the uptake and use of such tools. We contend that new technologies and new techniques for exploring and manipulating them have to be translated into …

Integrated Modeling Of Cadmium And Zinc Contamination In Groundwater And Surface Water Of The Kempen Region, The Netherlands, Bas Van Der Grift, Hilde Passier, Joachim Rozemeijer, Jasper Griffioen Jul 2004

Integrated Modeling Of Cadmium And Zinc Contamination In Groundwater And Surface Water Of The Kempen Region, The Netherlands, Bas Van Der Grift, Hilde Passier, Joachim Rozemeijer, Jasper Griffioen

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Regional modeling of subsurface cadmium and zinc transport in a diffusely polluted area in the south of the Netherlands is the subject of this study. The atmospheric deposition of cadmium and zinc was caused by three zinc-ore smelters (point sources of emission). Agriculture and other sources of heavy metals are small compared to the atmospheric deposition in the vicinity of the smelters. A coupled unsaturated and saturated zone flow and transport model was used to assess and predict reactive transport of cadmium and zinc in three different catchments in the area. For cadmium an extensive set of modeling results is …

The aims of this study are to develop and implement a precipitation-runoff model in the Modular Modeling System (MMS) for a small mountain catchment, the Ameskar basin. It is part of the meso-scale, semi-arid Drâa basin investigated within IMPETUS, an integrated project for the efficient and sustainable use of freshwater in southern Morocco. The River Drâa drains from the High Atlas Mountains to Lac Iriki and feeds a large dam for irrigation purposes. Precipitation inputs include rain and snow from 3 climate stations. Snow sublimation plays a significant role in the higher altitudes and is integrated accordingly. Vegetation is scarce …

Using The Object Modeling System For Hydrological Model Development And Application, Sven Kralisch, P. Krause, Olaf David Jul 2004

Using The Object Modeling System For Hydrological Model Development And Application, Sven Kralisch, P. Krause, Olaf David

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

State of the art challenges in sustainable management of water resources have created demand for integrated, flexible and easy to use hydrological models which are able to simulate the quantitative and qualitative aspects of the hydrological cycle with a sufficient degree of certainty. Existing models which have been developed to fit these needs are often constrained to specific scales or purposes and thus can not be easily adapted to meet different challenges. As a solution for flexible and modularised model development and application, the Object Modeling System (OMS) has been developed in a joint approach by the USGS (Denver, Col.), …

Taxes, Efficiency, And Redistribution: Discriminatory Taxation Of Villages In Ottoman Palestine, Southern Syria And Transjordan In The Sixteenth Century, Metin M. Cosgel Jul 2004

Taxes, Efficiency, And Redistribution: Discriminatory Taxation Of Villages In Ottoman Palestine, Southern Syria And Transjordan In The Sixteenth Century, Metin M. Cosgel

Economics Working Papers

Governments can tax productive activities with either uniform or discriminatory rates among taxpayers. Although discriminatory rates can cause productive inefficiency and require high cost of administration, they can be preferred because of their advantage in distributional flexibility. This paper studies the discriminatory taxation of production in the Fertile Crescent. Using information from the Ottoman tax registers, it examines the basis, distortionary effects, and distributional consequences of discriminatory rates quantitatively. The results challenge widely held beliefs about the basis for discriminatory rates in this region and the Ottoman government's motivation in adapting systems of taxation in newly conquered lands.

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Research on the western gray whale (Eschrichtius robustus) population summering off northeastern Sakhalin Island, Russia, has been ongoing since 1995. This collaborative Russia-U.S. research program has produced important new information on the present day conservation status of this critically endangered population. This report reviews recent findings from 2003 research activities and combines such with data from previous years, in some cases ranging back to 1994. Photo-identification research conducted off Sakhalin Island in 2003 resulted in the identification of 75 whales, including 11 calves and two previously unidentified non-calves. When combined with data from 1994-2002, a catalog of 131 …

Social Identity And Manipulative Interhousehold Transfers Among East African Pastoralists, Marieke Huysentruyt, Christopher B. Barrett, John G. Mcpeak Jul 2004

Social Identity And Manipulative Interhousehold Transfers Among East African Pastoralists, Marieke Huysentruyt, Christopher B. Barrett, John G. Mcpeak

Economics - All Scholarship

We model interhousehold transfers between nomadic livestock herders as the state-dependent consequence of individuals' strategic interdependence resulting from the existence of multiple, opposing externalities. A public good security externality among individuals sharing a social
(e.g., ethnic) identity in a potentially hostile environment creates incentives to band together. Self-interested interhousehold wealth transfers from wealthier herders to poorer ones may emerge endogenously within a limited wealth space as a means to motivate accompanying migration by the recipient. The distributional reach and size of the transfer are limited, however, by a resource appropriation externality related to the use of common property grazing lands. …

A Cost Effective Approach To Taxonomic Resolution For Bioassessment And Monitoring Programs In The State Of Georgia, Jodi Alene Williams Jul 2004

A Cost Effective Approach To Taxonomic Resolution For Bioassessment And Monitoring Programs In The State Of Georgia, Jodi Alene Williams

Theses and Dissertations

The Georgia Ecoregions Reference Sites Project has developed biological criteria for streams in Georgia according to the Rapid Bioassessment Protocols For Wadeable Streams and Rivers. Streams will ultimately be classified into categories of impairment so that management decisions can be made in accordance with the Clean Water Act. A cost-effective approach to accomplish mandates set forth by the Clean Water Act must be employed, as state budgets are limited. One means of examining costs is to assess taxonomic resolution. Taxonomic resolution not only assesses the sensitivity of biocriteria, it also allows one to make recommendations to state agencies regarding the …

On Mitchell's Me++: The Cyborg Self And The Networked City, Davin Heckman

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Reminiscent of books by other MIT luminaries like Neil Gershenfeld's When Things Start to Think (2000) and Rodney Brooks' Flesh and Machines (2002), William Mitchell's Me++ reminds me, yet again, of why it is so exciting to be alive in an age of wireless phones, high-speed data transmission, and cybernetic systems. Unfortunately, after a couple of years of reading Wired and developing a festering cynicism for high-tech solutions to social problems that have been caused by previous high-tech solutions (like titanic ships, combustion engines, splitting atoms, and all kinds of really horrible weapons), I am more interested in …
